Axel - Review - Copenhagen - The Infatuation

"Opened in 2007 in a beautiful turn-of-the-century building in Vesterbro, Axel is the first in its group to achieve the golden (Ø), the green key, and a Green Globe certification – all evidence of the work it’s done to make luxury more sustainable. It’s ideal for a climate-minded traveler who would still like to use a hotel spa, which seems fair given the year we’ve collectively had. It’s also pet-friendly, with an iconic jungle-like courtyard that’s perfect for some dog spotting over breakfast. The hotel’s signature Balinese style continues in all its rooms, with plenty of rattan, bamboo, and woven textiles pieces. Book your stay here. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

If you want balcony and/or bathtub in your room, write down it in your reservation request, as not all the rooms are equipped with them. This is the hint given by the reception and I see it is important to start the review with such practical information. The hotel locates next to the central railway station and is within walk distance to many attractions, including Tivoli, museums and shopping areas. Accommondation price in general is high here and within the certain budget range, this hotel seems to have the highest rate against review numbers. The design of the hotel is nice, Indonesian style, making you feel that you are in Bali. However, rooms are quite small and NO VENTILATION. Luckily the summer is not that hot here. We got free upgrade for the room, and first we got the room with shower. For two adults, the room hardly offers the space to move around. We changed into the room with bathtub the next morning. The corner room has more space, but it is next to the old elevator, that is, you can hear it the whole day. We kept the windows open for a while to get some fresh air, as the room is next to the street, we heard the engineers all the time. But with noise cancelling or earbuds, this is not a big issue. Another improvement other than the ventilation is the bed, which is far from supportive or firm. The hotel names its breakfast as signature breakfast, well, I rather say that it is as of average Nordic hotel breakfast, nothing special, except the waiters that were nice.

I had a wonderful stay at Axel Guldsmeden Hotel! The room was truly unique and full of character – definitely not your average hotel experience. Everything was beautifully designed and comfortable. The organic breakfast was a real highlight – delicious, fresh, and full of healthy options. You can tell they put a lot of care into both the food and the overall atmosphere. Also, the staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful, which made the stay even more enjoyable. Highly recommend for anyone looking for something special with a sustainable touch!

Absolutely cannot beat the location for a hotel so nice. Very eclectic, eco-friendly, seemed Bali-inspired. The spa is outstanding, my daughter (9 years old) and I were able to go together to relax in the hot tub and cold plunge after long days of walking and that was a lovely treat. Reception staff very nice and helpful. Beds were excellent and comfortable. No AC, but to my surprise it didn’t matter. A fan in the room kept everything comfortable and the balcony allowed for a nice breeze. |Slight cons - There was an “eggy” small from the drains occasionally that was off-putting. And the spa hours were a bit odd as during our stay the spa was only open at night. But minor things, overall for the price this is a great hotel option.

We stayed at Axel Guldsmeden for our wedding and had a fantastic experience. A handwritten welcome note in our room made us feel immediately special. The breakfast was excellent, with fresh organic and local products. Staff at reception were kind, professional, and even congratulated us after the wedding. The hotel is a green oasis in the city, with a beautiful plant-filled atrium. We also rented bikes — everything was perfect. Highly recommended!

Google
The hotel was a little strange. The shower was just a handheld showerhead in a bathtub. There was no shower curtain or door of any kind, so the water went all over the bathroom. Also, the towels were extremely thin and scratchy. They were not soft on the skin at all. The breakfast was okay, but all the dishes had something funny about them - like adding lime zest to the cottage cheese or whole chili slices to the scrambled eggs. Also, for gluten free folks like me, there weren't many options. The positives were the location, which was excellent, just a block from the main train station. The balcony was very nice and peaceful, and the room was quiet even with the windows and balcony door open. The hotel makes an effort to be sustainable, which we appreciated. The bed was very comfortable, except for the pillows which were practically nonexistent. It took two pillows to do the work of one standard pillow. As a note to parents - there was a large bookcase that was propped very precariously against the wall. It wobbled every time I put something on or took something off. It is a terrible hazard around children, so I would not recommend staying there if you have children.

After traveling for 3 weeks, we were delighted that our last stop was at your hotel. The room was very welcoming. We loved the balcony. The beds were comfortable. The location was on point. The breakfast was so yummy! The staff were helpful and pleasant to chant with. We also rented bikes from you too.

The room was spacious and spotlessly clean. Very comfortable bed with lovely cotton bedding. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was relaxed with professional staff. The breakfast buffet is of a high standard with choice beyond one can manage, alas. All so appetizing and beautifully presented. Finally , the location is close to the Main train station and to Metro so transport links to get around Copenhagen on the door step. We will return☺️

Google
Beautiful hotel situated close to the train station. Our room was amazing! We chose the room with the roof top hot tub tub and the price was well worth it. Sitting on a night looking out over the city was great it wasn't noisy just relaxing. The room was beautifully decorated and laid out with just the right amount of lighting and furniture to give that true hygge feeling. Staff were very helpful and not intrusive. Highly recommend

Yelp
This hotel is cozy and perfectly located to get around Copenhagen. My main issue is the lack of amenities in the room. It was difficult to store any luggage and the body wash was empty upon arrival, which they "provide". We notified the lobby attendant and when we returned that night, still no refill. We had to rely on our own supplies, which thankfully we had packed. They have co-working areas which was super useful as my partner and I had to work during our stay. The internet is reliable. Though people have reported issues in the past. Personally, did not experience anything beyond a slight latency drag. They seem to have fixed the issues.

Yelp
Great location, excellent staff, and very comfortable rooms. The vibe at this hotel is very relaxed, especially the rooms. I was upgraded to a double room and it was plenty of space. The beds were very comfortable and I had some very good sleeps and naps. The centre courtyard was a nice treat to enjoy the outdoors, especially the covered greenroom for the winter. I would definitely stay here again!

Yelp
We had such a lovely stay at this hotel! The location is amazing - you are right off the metro and a walkable distance to many great attractions. The decoration is just as charming as in the photos. We didn't try the breakfast because we already had other reservations, but it did look amazing. We spent some time in the common areas, having drinks from the bar and playing cards with friends - it was delightful! The rooms themselves were clean and just as lovely as the rest of the hotel. The walls may be a little on the thin side, but nothing too distracting. Everyone we interacted with at the front desk was very helpful and pleasant. And overall, the price was really approachable for something with such a great location and overall wonderful vibe. Would happily stay here again!

Yelp
Had a three day stay at Axel - great hotel in terms of location and vibes, very much tropical vibes! The receptionist had a hard time getting our hotel keys correct which was very frustrating for us. So we had to keep waiting to get the key for our room. Otherwise, the rooms were very clean and had everything we needed. They also have bike rentals which is 170 DKK, instead of 150 DKK as stated on their wall. Their bikes are parked at the back of the building and were easy to access.

Yelp
I had a trip planned to Copenhagen in February with a girlfriend to celebrate my 50th birthday. I was so excited to stay at Axel Guldsmeden. Unfortunately my husband was in a traumatic motorcycle accident a week before my trip and was in the hospital for over 3 weeks. He almost died. I booked the trip through Booking.com for $1,103. Booking.com was amazing and agreed to cancel the reservation and refund my money but said that Axel Guldsmeden needed to agree as well. I thought that would not be a problem since they have a 72 hour cancellation policy and this was over a week before my trip. They called the hotel with me on the line and said they would not agree to cancel or even give me a credit for a future date. Booking.com went another step further and called again trying to get the manager and also emailed them on my behalf. I offered to send medical records from the hospital. After a week of no answer, this was their final email losing $1,103. Sadly, I will never stay at a Axel Guldsmeden Hotel. Dear Casey, Our manager from the booking department replied through booking.com yesterday that we are unfortunately not able to waive fees on non-refundable reservation. Unfortunately, like plane tickets, these are the terms when booking non-refundable on booking.com We will of course forward the bill for the reservation for your travel insurance. With kind regards Axel Guldsmeden Mette

Yelp
More modern and hip than its sister wife property just down the road, this boutique hotel had everything you needed and some things you didn't even know you needed, like a rowing machine in their gym and a spa on site. The location straddled both up and coming and dodgy neighborhoods (but in Copenhagen, dodgy just means a few adult shops) and was also super convenient to the train station and to most touristy things. There is a restaurant on site, along with an extremely spacious zen-like courtyard in between the two buildings (one houses rooms and the restaurant, the other more rooms and the spa) that you can enjoy from day to evening as you wish. There are bikes available for rent and the same amazing bath products as experienced at the other G property. The room stole the show. Great lighting coming in, cute balcony, very comfortable bed, desk with goodies for purchase and stationary, lots of space to spread your stuff out and walk around in (I even did some yoga at one point). The restroom had a heated floor, roomy shower, and cute little accents to make you feel like someone really put thought into what would make a traveler feel at home or relaxed while away! If you're traveling solo or in a pair, this is definitely the way to go. Spend a little extra than you would budgeting around, as it is well worth it!

Yelp
The Axel Hotel is part of the Guldsmeden hotel group which has a number of properties in Copenhagen and other places. They are known as much for their focus on green and sustainability as they are for their relaxing ambiance. I selected the Axel mainly due to their website photos of the French Colonial/Bali inspired interiors which looked so unique in Copenhagen. Most hotels here are furnished in a very Scandinavian, almost spartan design style. Maybe I've been to Ikea too many times, but I didn't feel like staying in what many looked like college dorm rooms. Since I was only staying two nights, I didn't really mind the small Single room. The superior level room was a tiny squeeze, probably 10 sq. meters. I could not open the 1 foot-wide closet armoire without moving my suitcase. The room safe didn't work and the wifi signal weak in my fourth floor room. However, I had a comfortable twin poster bed which was probably closer to a full, a large bathroom and shower, and a small balcony with a bistro table with two chairs to relax in the sun overlooking their inner courtyard. The Bali decor was impeccable! Their branded I Love Eco toiletries were great, especially enjoying the Body Bubbles Wash and Fresh Mop Shampoo. I wished they had included conditioner, although it's all for sale in the lobby. I'd definitely stay here again when visiting Copenhagen, and request an inner room since the street can be noisier at night than the day with a few yelling remnants of the former Red Light district. Axel is in the trendy Vesterbro neighborhood where I ate at both five star restaurants and cheaper ethnic places. Being less than two blocks from the Central Train Station, I was able to leave the hotel and catch the train to the airport in less than four minutes. You can't beat that convenience.

Yelp
Searching for a nice, boutique hotel near Kobenhavn central station proved to be a challenge. I had my doubts but I took the risk booking Axel hotel in the vibrant Vesterbro district, where sex shops and prostitutes can be found on the corner. (the former proved to be interesting and the latter, harmless) I'm not one of those people who'd skimp on a hotel stay because sleep is important to me. Doing a bit of research ahead, I knew to expect a hard time sleeping because I'm in Scandinavia. In summertime, the sun sets at 11pm and is already bright at 4am. Balancing a white palette with rustic Balinese furniture and accents, Axel hotel pulls off a relaxed, tasteful hip vibe. A double superior room gives you plenty of space to stretch out with a large seating area and a stone tub in the bathroom. If you request for a room facing the inner courtyard, you'd get a balcony too. There is an on site spa (which I think should be free to hotel guests! hence the 4 stars), all organic full size bath products and eco friendly principles throughout the hotel. Don't forget to grab free organic apples by the door or if its raining, ask for one of their bright yellow umbrellas. A fabulous stay at the Axel is well worth the 1645 DKK price/night.

Yelp
This hotel was so relaxing to stay in! The grounds and the rooms were beautifully decorated and felt so cozy. The room itself was very well suited for two people and the bed, blankets, and pillows were so fluffy and comfortable. The noise level was very low and we rarely heard other guests during our stay. The staff was very helpful and responsive before and throughout the trip. We also loved the option to rent bikes directly through the hotel - they were awesome and we were able to see so much more of the city! The location of this hotel is great for train travelers being so close to the Central Station and Tivoli and just a short walk to the downtown area. The spa has wonderful amenities as well including a sauna, steam room, cold dipping pool, jacuzzi, shower, mud masks/facial scrubs, lotions, etc. I would highly recommend this hotel or any Guldsmeden hotel to anyone looking for a wonderful place to stay!

Yelp
It seems not all rooms are created equal at Axel Guldsmeden. So, for reference, ours was room #1302. Negatives 1. No mini fridge 2. No shower (bath only) 3. No suitcase luggage rack 4. No seating besides one hard desk chair 5. Bathroom ladder shelf not secured (it fell towards me and the maids propped it up with toilet paper!) Positives 1. Nice staff 2. Updated attractive rooms 3. Outdoor balcony 4. Good Breakfast (according to my husband as I didn't try it) Neutrals 1. Memory foam mattress (some appreciate this type of mattress but for me, it's not breathable material and you sink in too far, especially when the mattress is overused) 2. Feather beds (very cozy but can run hot with no other bedding and tends to be highly allergenic) 3. Location (Vesterbro district is within walking distance to downtown which is nice but what is not so nice is it located in the more sketchy of the districts where you'll see drug dealers, prostitutes, and sex shops around the corner that have porn displayed in their windows) I should clarify that the room was advertised as having a shower and photos of the room showed a shower in the bathroom. We would not have booked this room if we knew it didn't have one. The room we actually got had a bathtub with a shower attachment but had no where to hang the attachment on the wall. Also, the shower attachment was broken so when holding it, it would swivel around, go rogue, and get everything wet in its path, so it was essentially useless. If I could do it again, I would have booked a hotel closer to downtown, with a shower and mini fridge!

Yelp
I did quite a bit of research prior to booking this hotel and went with Axel mostly because of the great reviews. Unfortunately, my stay was not as pleasant. The room was VERY small and felt a little cramped with the luggage. The bed was comfortable, but the location of the room was near an alleyway. I could hear people talking/yelling, garbage can's being thrown, and couldn't sleep. On the plus side, the bathroom had heated flooring (if that matters). The staff was very friendly and the restaurant served fresh, made-to-order organic meals.

Yelp
This was my first time staying at this hotel and I really loved it! Location.. good or bad depending on who you ask. Great because it was near lots of restaurants, the train station and easy to walk to the meat district for more restaurants! The bad..if you mind prostitutes and sex shops right around the corner. Loved the buffet that is included in the stay, that alone is worth gold because it's not like a paltry little buffett it is full blown organic cheese, eggs, yogurt, bacon, toasts, jams, homemade granola, fresh squeezed juices etc etc. Hotel is very eco friendly with a very Bali feel. Loved it! Felt like I was on vacation and not a work trip. One con was my room was located right across from the building they were renovating so starting at 7AM I could hear the drilling and other loud noises, while at night I could hear men yelling and catcalling women. Other con had to be the slow elevator!

Yelp
A disappointing experience. Booked 3 months ahead and prepaid, and wound up with a first floor room where we couldn't even open our curtains or the windows, this during the biggest heat wave since the 1930's. No fridge, no easy access to ice (we were told to go to the hotel bar if we wanted ice). Asked the desk if we could bring our own drinks into the very nice courtyard, and we were told " of course ". The next day we were evicted from that same courtyard since we could only have drinks from the bar or pay a corkage fee. Tried to confirm with the front desk that Tuesday is a holiday, which it is, but it was news to him. When we asked if the national museum would be open that day he suggested that we Google it. (no other guests were at the desk, so it wasn't a matter of being overwhelmed by guests) Very nice location, but returning to your hotel should not be a hassle. Staff should know what is permissible and what is not, and staff should be aware of holidays and their impact on tourist sites. In the future I'll look for another hotel. There are many in the same area.

Yelp
The hotel's design was great and eco-friendly. The free water-bottles to refill during our stay were a nice touch. The bath amenities were luxurious, however the water temperature in the shower was not consistent. The hotel offered bikes for a small fee and we used them to get around everywhere. The concierge was very helpful with directions, ideas of things to do and with check-in and check-out. The hotel bar food and drinks were incredible. The room was small and cosy. The location was perfect-- so close the the central station. We loved our stay and will stay again when we are back in Copenhagen.

Lizz H.

Yelp
The hotel provides a very unique experience, and I really liked the staff. The rooms are unique and almost rustic looking, with a fabulous ambiance throughout the space. I loved their bath products as well, all natural stuff and full bottles! Although I was traveling alone for business, the comfortable bed, lighting, and layout of the room would also make for a romantic atmosphere. I did not make it down to the wine bar, but it looked very cozy and like a great place to snag a glass before heading out to dinner. I was a single woman traveling alone, and I did not think that the location was that bad...

Yelp
Can't express enough how much I love this hotel! Just stayed there for my second time, and I'm planning to return in July. The rooms are quaint, yet comfortable. The staff is impeccable! Love the organic buffet breakfast, especially out in the peaceful zen-like garden. Location is perfect...just steps away from Central Station. Highly recommend this property for anyone traveling to Copenhagen.

Yelp
The Hotel Axel itself is nicely maintained and tries to convey a spa atmosphere. The staff were pleasant to deal with and very helpful, which greatly improved my rating. They have one elevator which gets a lot of use, a bar downstairs, a nice waiting area with couches, and they will store your luggage in case your flight doesn't leave until the afternoon or evening. My room was quite small, about the size of a dorm room for approximately $170/night. A decent breakfast buffet/brunch is available for about an additional $30. Also, there is an additional one-time fee (about $50) to use the spa which I found a bit silly. However, there are a few other things that you need to know before you book here. The hotel is in the middle of the red-light district directly south of the central train station as it appears many of the city's hotels are. At night and during the day, there were prostitutes on the street corners at the intersection closest to the hotel. At night, the doorway across the street attracted people who appeared to be using hard drugs. If that doesn't bother you, the hotel itself is amenable enough.

Andrew F.

Yelp
This hotel was absolutely perfect! Beautifully decorated with an emphasis on sustainability. Located a block from central station, it was a short walk to the Latin Quarter, Tivoli Gardens, and other must see attractions! Highly recommended this hotel. If I ever get back to Copenhagen, this would be my lodging preference!

Carl E.

Yelp
I'm not sure what the other non-5 stars are complaining about. For the money, what a gem. A lot more than expected. I was just camping overnight and needed an affordable bed. What I received, amazing customer service. Cold glass of juice when I arrived, stored our luggage until our room was ready, allowing empty hands for carting shopping bags, yippee. The spa room is really well designed, creating a cool atmosphere. Now there are some things to be weary. When you go to your room, pay attention to surroundings. There are no maps to get out. The neighborhood is a little sketchy, but completely safe, when compared to Los Angeles. Lol. All in all, can't wait to book again or recommend to friends. Did I mention the staff is amazing, love the smiles and service.

Yelp
This hotel is beautiful, clean, and the staff is extremely friendly! It's a great location- you can walk to the shopping areas and it's close to the train station. We loved our stay there!

Yelp
Strangely, CPH doesn't have many interesting hotels. Tablet, arbiter - apparently - of hotels that matter, only lists 7 in the city. Two of them belong to a chain (rhymes with 'thirst') that is really good at lobbies but really bad at rooms. And for whatever reason, only the Axel's sister hotel is listed. But Axel Hotel Guldsmeden is a unique place. Funky balinese-y styling, great breakfast and perfect location - unless CPH's harmless red light district freaks you out.
