"A craft-beer garden offering a Sweet Honey Buckin' cocktail (tequila, honey, grapefruit, and lime) for about $12 alongside an extensive list of craft beers." - Jesse Sparks
"Known for its spacious back patio with the neon-lit tree, this popular Midtown hangout and watering hole is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year with live music events and a vinyl compilation of its greatest jazz nights, called Live at Axelrad, Jazz Wednesdays. Stop by on Wednesdays for jazz, between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., and don’t forget to grab a beer and a slice of pizza from Luigi’s Pizzeria. Axelrad will also host some free live music events on Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19, and an album release party at Cactus Music in Montrose at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 19. Check out its schedule for all forms of entertainment here." - Brittany Britto Garley
"This Midtown beer garden and live-music venue is marking its 10th anniversary by releasing an eight-track vinyl compiled from its iconic weekly jazz nights, featuring a buzzy rendition of Nat King Cole’s “Autumn Leaves” and live recordings from regular performers such as Houston Ensemble and the Mark Simmons Jr. Quartet. The vinyl is a pared-down physical edition of a digital album available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify and to buy on iTunes and Google Play; the managing partner curated the collection after sifting through hundreds of hours of live recordings and collaborated with a local label and studio to press it as a passion project dedicated to his father. The venue launched its long-running Jazz Wednesdays in response to the loss of other local jazz rooms (with early weekly, free appearances from New Orleans trumpeter-singer Kermit Ruffins), and it has since become a community hub that showcases local music-school alumni, hosts markets, fundraisers, themed and family-friendly events, and serves food from an adjacent pizzeria. Housed in a circa-1925 building that was renovated rather than demolished, it is known for a spacious backyard patio with hammocks, an approachable drink program (including an affordable Beer of the Day and often no cover), and multi-day anniversary celebrations and an album release party tied to a limited vinyl pressing sold at a historic Montrose record shop." - Brittany Britto Garley
"Spanning 12,000 square feet, Axelrad’s eclectic open-air patio is a hub of outdoor entertainment — or relaxation, should you choose. The local watering hole is outfitted with a beer garden with sculptures and art installations and a community event space that showcases live music and film screenings. There’s plenty of seating at its patio picnic tables, but things get extra cozy in the colorful hammock grove. Take advantage of its extra-long happy hour, which runs from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays and features $4 wells, $5 frozen drinks, and $5 Michel-Rad-As, house wines, and margaritas." - Brittany Britto Garley
"This Midtown beer garden is 90% patio. That's not great when it's 105 degrees, but the good news is that you can experience Axelrad in several ways. Find a few seats at the indoor bar area with over 25 beers on tap, hop into a swinging chair with a frozen drink or land at a picnic table knocking back a few beers. There isn’t really a bad seat on the sprawling lawn. But come early on the weekends because seats are highly coveted, especially the hammocks." - gianni greene, chelsea thomas, julie takahashi
