Aydea - Review - Richmond - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Aydea has opened a second SF location in the Richmond (the first is in SoMa). Avenues dwellers can now get their hands on Tatar specialties like borscht, cottage cheese pancakes, and uchpuchmak filled with potato, onion, and beef or mushroom. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Julia Chen

Turkish Feast Newcomer Turquaz Opens in San Francisco’s SoMa Neighborhood | Eater SF

"Expanding its Eastern Russian menu to 5801 Geary Boulevard on Friday, March 14, the second outpost (not including a new food truck) will feature items such as zang madame and house-made duck prosciutto." - Paolo Bicchieri

Aydea: Duck Prosciutto and Huge Dumplings Are About to Hit the Inner Richmond | Eater SF

"When he opened his SoMa location, owner Chris Dumesnil let his two daughters press their hand prints into the walls’ still-wet paint; now they get the chance to make their mark on Geary Boulevard with a new Inner Richmond location debuting Friday, March 14. "We’re opening [the restaurant] in the Richmond to make sure that we’re closer to people," Dumesnil says. The Geary outpost adds items fans won’t find at the SoMa spot, including uchpuchmak (a hand pie commonly made with meats including lamb and goose) paired with the restaurant’s house-made duck prosciutto, while other signatures make the jump: huge pelmeni dumplings, 72-hour chicken broth, and Dumesnil’s time-tested mashed potatoes. Brunch will include a new Tatar breakfast—numerous items compiled a la English breakfast—alongside standbys like the zang madame, a Tatar riff on a croque madame; the spot will also open for dinner twice a week. Everything remains seed oil–free and all-organic. On the drinks side the new location will serve tea and nonalcoholic cocktails; "Roughly half the population of Tatarstan is Muslim, according to the Carnegie Moscow Center," and Dumesnil says his menu reflects the teetotaling of the region, so there will be nonalcoholic wines as well as a full coffee menu and regional favorites such as sea buckthorn shrubs, black currant teas, and kvas, a Lithuanian rye soda. The business has been on a hot streak: the first permanent space opened in January 2024 in a former Sushiritto location, they served food during Outside Lands in August 2024, rolled out a food truck in February 2025, and the San Francisco Chronicle wrote up Dumesnil’s qistibi, "a kind of crepe stuffed with creamy potatoes, caramelized onions, and beef." Catering has picked up, and affordability and a family-friendly environment remain priorities: "We’re still trying to do all the nicest things that we can do," Dumesnil says with a laugh. The Geary Boulevard outpost (5801 Geary Boulevard) debuts on Friday, March 14, and will be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, with dinner on Thursdays and Fridays to come." - Paolo Bicchieri

This place is such a gem! Real food, no seed oils, lovely family owned spot, incredibly delicious and fresh food. I had the borscht and added pelmeni, then tried their peremyach which is kind of like a fried dumpling with beef inside. They make their own hot sauce which was unreal, the owner is a husband and wife from Mexico City and Tartastan so he made something that resembles a salsa with a lovely bite. I ended with a cup of sea buckthorn tea which I hadn’t heard of but they apparently import it, they walk you through everything which I really appreciated. Don’t think twice! Highly recommend coming

Google
Best food we ate in SF! And the best service! We had the borscht, pelmeni, sea buckthorn tea and this apple cheese pie that I can't remember the name of. Everything was delicious! The decor is simple and warm. We'll go back again before we leave.

Nice ambience, space feels very open and cozy. I’ve never had Tatar cuisine before but everything we ate was absolutely delicious - very flavorful, filling and comforting. Staff was friendly and helped us choose what to order! Would recommend

Just had lunch at AyDea—such a great new spot in the Outer Richmond. I had the potato qistibi and it was so flavorful and comforting. The team is lovely and the whole space has a really warm vibe. I didn’t try the pastries this time but they looked amazing—definitely going back for those.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at AyDea, Tatar restaurant in San Francisco, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming, with traditional decor that gave me a glimpse into Tatar culture. The food was absolutely incredible. I had the Uchpuchmac -- a triangular pastry filled with juicy, well-seasoned beef, baked to perfection. I also tried Qistibi with a hearty filling of mashed potatoes and beef -- a comforting and flavorful combination that really stood out. For dessert, I went withChak-chak, a sweet, honey-soaked treat that was the perfect ending to the meal. Everything tasted authentic and homemade, like a comforting meal from grandmother. The staff was friendly and eager to share the cultural background of the dishes, which made the experience even more special. AyDea is a true hidden gem for anyone looking to explore unique cuisines beyond the usual. I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to try something new and delicious in San-Francisco

Google
I stopped in because I was curious about Tatar food and had a lovely informative chat about the cuisine with the friendly owner. Based on his recommendation I tried a takeout order of the qistibi potato pancake with halal beef. At home we all enjoyed this tasty comforting stuffed pancake with the light cream cheese topping it came with in a separate container. I also enjoyed the herby salad greens with delicious homemade dressing. I’d come back to try more dishes in the soothingly decorated clean inviting restaurant.

Google
The only place in the US to savor authentic Tatar cuisine and more. I like that the owners care about the quality of the products they are using for cooking. The selection of tea is also amazing, like no other place I’ve been in the US.

Google
Tried going here yesterday but the hours are incorrect on both Google Maps and the restaurant’s own webpage (Thursday - Sunday 11:30 AM - 8 PM). Yelp is also wrong if what’s written on the windows is correct - Friday through Sunday, with varying hours. Please sort this out.

Yelp
I was so happy to see this new location pop up. I've been to the SOMA spot once, and have been dreaming of the Qistibi ever since. It's a wonderful addition to the Richmond. The interior feels quaint and cozy, and the servers are welcoming. This time I tried the Uchpuchmak, a Zang pastry, and a chai latte. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
Never had Tatar cuisine before, so when AyDea opened, we decided to try. I didn't really know where Tatarstan is but knew it's somewhere in Russia/Asia so decided to look it up. Firstly, Tatarstan is a federal subject of Russia, not a separate country. Geographically, its location is where the Volga and Kama rivers meet. Ethnically, Tatars are Turkic people. Let's talk about the vibes. AyDea filled the space previously left by HolDaLa on this stretch of Geary. The inside restaurant is lovely with nice sitting and a cool wall display of tubeteika, a traditional skullcap with rooted traditions and meanings worn at important events and for religious ceremonies. This is another counter service restaurant where you pay first before sitting/receiving your food. On recent visits, we tried the following: *Liliya Pancake - fluffy and delicious! Will get again. *Uchpuchmak Beef with beef bone broth. Pretty amazing, will get again. *plombir float. Not my favorite, I didn't care for the taste. *Zang Monsieur. It was just okay. I like French version better. *Peremech. Pretty good, similar to the Russian counterpart Piroshki but Peremech can be unleavened or leavened dough and is primarily meat & onion filling. Very filling. *pelmeni. Good. Love the apple cider vinegar and sour cream side which helps cut through the meaty bites. This is very traditional Russian food. *Ivan tea chai. Good. Wondering if this "Ivan" is in reference to Ivan the Terrible? Probably. *Cina Zang (cinnamon roll). It's ok. Looks better than it tastes. Service was friendly. Located on Geary and 22nd Ave.

Yelp
Some say we should normalize gatekeeping. I agree! I'm petty AF and don't want to wait in even longer lines. BUT some under the radar mom and pop shops deserve the same love as "aesthetic" and "novelty" shops, yea? I feel like AyDea is being slept on. They're the FIRST Tatar Café in the city and in the entire country. The couple opened their first brick and mortar last year on Bryant street and opened their Outer Richmond location on 3/14/25. They also have a food truck. The business is named after their children. This week, I was on my way to an appointment so stopped by for weekday lunch. Takeout and indoor dining available. M E N U Tatar Cuisine (Tatarstan) which takes influences from Russians, Eastern Europeans, and Central Asians (i.e. Uzbek). Morning pastries have French vibes, i.e. croissant and kouign amann. Lunch starts at 10:30 am with heartier dishes. For drinks, there's coffee, tea, and housemade fruit drink (i.e. kompot). Catering available. F O O D * Qistibi: Flatbread w/ halal beef, mashed potatoes, tartar cream ($13): https://tinyurl.com/85t72y2h This is one of two of my fav items at AyDea so I had to get it at their new location. The crisp, chewy leavened flatbread is filled with buttery mashed potatoes and luscious, meltingly tender stewed beef reminiscent of birria. Flavorful but not salty. Each component is delicious on their own but together? Hella bomb. * Pelmeni: Halal Beef Dumplings, bone broth, chive oil, dill, apple cider vinegar, tartar cream ($16): https://tinyurl.com/56nd24yv Homey and rustic, the ravioli-like dumplings have a thick, chewy dough with a savory minced beef filling. They're steamed and served in a pool of nourishing 72 hour chicken bone broth with a side of acidic vinegar and sour cream for dipping. If you like Tortellini en Brodo, this will be your jam! * Kotleti: Beef Cutlets w/ mashed potatoes, red cabbage salad ($17): http://tinyurl.com/2yzme4rc This is my second fav dish so I ordered two takeout orders for friends. Pic is from when I dined at their Bryant location. For a deliciously satisfying meal, look no further. The kofta-like beef patties had a crisp seared crust, juicy and well-spiced. The accompanying mashed potatoes were rich and velvety smooth and the gravy gave beef stroganoff vibes. S E R V I C E Friendly and warm service. If you're in a rush, call in your order. A M B I A N C E Minimalist and rustic with 9 tables and one communal high top. P A R K I N G Easily found metered parking on the same block but can def be challenging on the weekends (they're closed Sundays). Overall, The Richmond has a significant Eastern European presence compared to other parts of the city so AyDea is a wonderful addition to Outer Richmond. If you're looking for hella delicious comfort food, hit up AyDea!

Yelp
Amazing vibes and tasty food, great addition to the neighborhood! The food is upscale and interesting despite being at its core simple and Soviet.

Here at 10:40 AM Wed, and the gates are locked. Doesn't look open. Called and they are now closed on Wednesday.

Yelp
An Absolute Gem in San Francisco! The most delicious breakfast! Every bite was a perfect balance of flavor and tradition. My husband is rarely impressed by food, but he was absolutely delighted! From the beautifully presented dishes to the incredible taste and the warm, inviting atmosphere--everything here is a perfect 10/10. A true hidden gem that we can't wait to visit again!

Yelp
First time trying Tatar cuisine for lunch on a Wednesday. Josh was friendly and explained all the dishes to us. Suggested the Qistibi and Peremech and we also ordered the Pelmeni salad. Every dish was delicious. Our favorite was the Pelmeni salad with the mix of sweet and tart flavors. A nice distinctive addition to the neighborhood. The citrus coffee was excellent, smooth, no bitterness, with a hint of citrus. Looking forward to trying more dishes.

Yelp
Awesome new location to try Tatarstan (republic in Russia) cuisine! Very nice team and top tier food + pastries, along with coffee coming soon. Another great addition to the central richmond.

Yelp
This place was beyond amazing! The owner is incredibly kind and generous, and all the food was perfect. Their pelmeni salad was hearty, fresh, and super flavorful. Everything was very high quality and obviously plated with care. This place is absolutely worth your time.

Yelp
Nice vibe. Living room furniture inside. All day breakfast menu was great, but our favorites were the Pelmeni dumplings and the Qistibi. This sort of place is what makes the Richmond district so special. Bonus points for the cute little kids helping the family-run kitchen.

Yelp
I had not heard of this cuisine until today. My aunt and I stopped in for lunch. She had a potato and mushroom dish, and I have a beef and potato pastry. Both were excellent. The place is very pretty and clean. There is also a large assortment of children's toys, and I imagine they plan to be kid friendly.

Yelp
INCREDIBLE FOOD! Not just taste but quality. I went in hungry and fatigued. I left full and revived. Josh is an amazing human who created an amazing space. Oh and they have some of the realest pastries you can get. I ate 3 of them and felt no bloating or overload. Highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Obsessed. This Tatar café is a hidden gem -- flaky pastries, rich flavors, and everything feels homemade in the best way. It's cozy, authentic, and way too easy to keep coming back.

Yelp
Ya'll got to come to this truck. All smells, tastes and sights are divine. Truly a 10/10.

Yelp
This is an excellent place for vegetarians with sf o many choices. I tried the tofu with glaze. The pelmeni was really good, the cream and chives really make it. It was all very tasty. Another great addition to the Outer Richmond Geary restaurants.

Yelp
