Where to Eat Crepes in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"There are plenty of tempting stands inside the food court at Mitsuwa, the Chicago area’s premiere Japanese market in suburban Arlington Heights, including Japanese-style crepe specialist B-Bee Crepe & Umacha. Though Japanese crepes are strikingly similar to their French counterparts, the primary difference is presentation — in Japan, they’re rolled into cones and stuffed with sweets like pudding, whipped cream, Nutella, and ice cream. B-Bee’s menu includes flavors like taro, matcha, almond banana, and more." - Naomi Waxman

This place is a mockery to Japanese / HARAJUKU crepes. I have given it three chances, and this third time after having left Japan on Saturday will be the last. I am so tired of it existing and taking up space where a better shop should go and yet it continues to garner business because of its novelty in location. Before this establishment came to Mitsuwa, Marion crepes would visit from Japan once a year and bring the famous Japanese whipped cream to make the best crepes. That no longer happens because of this store. Which would be fine if it could fill the void of authentic Japanese crepes but it cannot. The crepes themselves are well made, the fruit is good, but the economy freezer burnt ice cream and the awful whipped cream that leaves a sickly sweet buttermilky aftertaste in your mouth is nothing like the fluffy signature Japanese whipped cream that brings joy to those who have it. The service is fine. Maybe the tea is good, I don’t know. I will never try it because supporting this business is keeping something better from coming here. I have had Japanese crepes in Kyoto, Tokyo, San Francisco, Toronto and New York. Authentic Japanese crepes in the USA can be done well—this place just feels like they aren’t trying. I know they know it too because years ago they advertised new whipped cream—but it’s still not good enough. Especially for costing twice as much as one in Tokyo.

Google
B- Bee Crepe and Umacha never disappoints! Their boba drinks are hands-down some of the best I’ve had—perfectly chewy pearls, just the right sweetness, and a great variety of flavors. You can really taste the quality in every sip, whether you're going for a classic milk tea or one of their fruit teas.

Google
The absolutely best matcha latte boba I have ever had! Was visiting Chicago and came here, already loved boba. But now nothing will compare to the boba had here. Amazing!!!

Google
Got the blueberry cheesecake with strawberry ice cream & the ice cream had a hair inside 🫠 + the mango smoothie was decent. Honestly if not for the hair it's ok.

Google
the crepes are very filling! they have a nice, fluffy texture and looked gorgeous. also, the store has specials most weekday mornings. however, the smoothie was in fact a slushy. drinks are a bit overpriced here, but the crepes are worth trying.

Google
Everything was delicious! The taro cream was so good, the ice cream was tasty, and the combination was perfect. Highly recommend!

Google
The variety!! It's hard to choose one crepe, and they are delicious but also pricey. The place is either understaffed or these folks are laid-back. Sometimes they are chatting while the line grows longer, so give yourself plenty of time to order. If you eat in, it's basically a food court where you find a table in the center of a large room. The space is filled with other food options, a diverse crowd, and lots of animated talking.

Google
I got the Amore crepe with bananas and a scoop of strawberry ice cream. The fresh crème on this thing was beyond delicious. I have not enjoyed a crepe this much in many years. Although the place was very busy my crepe was ready in 5 minutes. They also did not skimp on the ingredients.

Yelp
Staff was very nice and rather helpful. There are so many different types and flavors for the Crepes. My daughter chose the Barbie Nutella and strawberry because she wouldn't share I had to one (or three up her) and and get the BBEE best seller with strawberry, banana, Nutella, whipped cream and ice cream. It was delicious! And no, I did not share ... with her. . This hot little spot is located in the food court inside Mitsuwa Marketplace.

Yelp
My husband and I went to B-Bee Crepe & Boba at Mitsuwa Marketplace to try their crepes and get some sweets. I got the Whipped Cream, Banana, Chocolate Sauce Crepe while my husband got the Ichigo Matcha Crepe with red. bean and matcha. They were tasty and delicious. The way they were packaged made it very difficult to eat without getting messy. We also had a Grizzly Coco chocolate drink without boba, which was very rich and creamy. If you're at Mitsuwa and looking for a sweet treat, give B-Bee Crepe & Boba a try. I recommend B-Bee Crepe & Boba.

Yelp
After a couple of disappointing lunch items in the food court, we decided to end the meal with a sweet treat and stopped by this place for a sweet crepe. We ordered the Ichigo Choco Pudding Crepe which was $10. It had strawberries and chocolate and we were looking forward to it. But like the other food we had at the food court, this crepe was also disappointing. The flavor was ok but the crepe itself was falling apart. And ended being a messy goop and not in a good way. This was the third place we tried in this food court and I am in no hurry to come back to any of them. Overall a disappointing experience.

Yelp
I ordered the brown sugar matcha milk tea and enjoyed it very much! I drank it a lot faster than I would have liked, but that was because it was so good! I went during the dinner rush, so it was a busier time of day. The staff was very quick to get through the line and additionally make all the drinks. The presentation of their crepe menu was very appealing, though I didn't order anything besides the drink. You should definitely try it out!

Yelp
I ordered the Love Me and my sister ordered the Don-Chan. There was a special for that day, which was BOGO 50% off so my sister and I decided to try it out while we wait for our lunch order to be ready. It was a regular size, which is smaller than what I am used to. I usually order a large size, but since I haven't tried this place before, I didn't want to order a large one and not like it. Love Me was a strawberry jam with cream cheese and milk drink. I always love strawberry drinks, so I decided to order it to try. It was not bad. I wish there were more strawberry jam so I can taste it more; there were too much milk in it. My sister likes her Don-Chan, which was brown sugar boba.

Yelp
Delish boba drinks & crepes but too expensive. Avocado smoothie with oat milk and Boba = $9.25 plus $1.04 tax = $10.29 total for a drink. Won't do it again.
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
Short-staffed with Employees who don't really know how to handle a line and order. The drinks are fine, but expensive in my opinion. We had a brown sugar matcha, a brown sugar milk, and a love me boba. Total each was $5.99. This took way too long. The line was confusing, the Employees weren't very organized, and there was no real way to tell when your drink was ready.
google avatar

Elizabeth T.

Yelp
What is up with the no prices posted! The display case with crepe (plastic?) renderings had no prices. The menu board had no prices. The paper menu by the register (the only one describing what is in the crepes) also had no prices! This is a food booth in the Mitsuwa Store food court. No prices posted is a turn off and makes me suspicious why they don't have prices posted. We asked a staff member why there were no prices. She said that customers can just ask staff. That is such an inefficient method! Imagine the line during the weekends! I asked how much was the b-bee crepe (strawberry, banana, Nutella). $11+ ! Maybe that's why they don't post prices. No, thank you.

Yelp
I wanted to give a 5, but the service was just too slow. We wanted to order the crepes, but after looking at the line and how long people have been waiting for their orders, we just settled with boba. Taste wise is okay. Nothing special, to be honest. For me, the tea is just too watery, but I am a Boba junkie so I'm not going to hold this against them. Overall, okay, but I will probably go for the other place in mitsuwa rather than here.
google avatar

Melissa Q.

Yelp
There were two workers and they seemed super overwhelmed. Not their fault, but the place was understaffed. It's part of a food court, so typical, noisy cafeteria ambiance. I got the strawberry pina colada drink and it was too sweet. It was like an icey smoothie. My friend got a milk boba which was pretty good, but I've had better elsewhere.

Gloria M.

Yelp
I love their crapes so 4-Star for that. There are many choices/toppings and they are testy. The boba is just okay. Now they have the croffle which is alright but they should warm it up before serving-I got the very dry and cold one.
google avatar

Joah K.

Yelp
I tried their bubble tea here a few times because of how close it is to my place. It's not the best bubble tea you will have, but again, it's convenient. Its unfortunate that there's not many bubble tea places around where I live. This is inside a food court. Bubble tea/dessert is a must after a meal (for me at least). I ordered the strawberry banana smoothie today with boba. The smoothie itself is $7.99 and $1.00 extra for boba. The total came out to be $8.89. That is overpriced for a bubble tea. I'd rather get myself a bowl of chipotle. The drink was refreshing, can't really taste the banana but it wasn't terrible. The tapioca (boba) was fresh, warm, and had a nice texture. It took about 10 minutes to get the drink. Overall, if you're really craving bubble tea, why not, go for it.
google avatar

Manda F.

Yelp
Looks to have become Ümacha with some new items offered. I got the Jasmine milk tea with boba cold, and loved it. Boba was warm and really soft. I'm not a boba expert, but sometimes they can be a bit dry or hard in the center. This place did the boba really well in my opinion. Regular boba is included at no additional cost which I appreciate. Didn't take long for my order to be done. No complaints, and I plan to go back and try their hot drinks next. Very pleased :)

Cassie J.

Yelp
Crepes are very good, but a bit overpriced. Around $10-$12 per crepe. The service is slow and the line can be confusing when they're busy. My husband got the taro crepe which was tasty, but the ice cream came out slightly melted. I'm a big fan of the Harajuku crepe! The whipped cream is fluffy and not too sweet.

Yelp
on weekends they open earlier 9:30? and everything is only $5 until 10:30am the crepes and drinks are perfect for a sweet treat they do list their prices up front and i think they are reasonable compared to other boba and dessert places in the city
google avatar

Karen N.

Yelp
I did read the reviews before trying this place. but I thought I would give them a chance. Went on a Saturday early evening. Of course, it was crowded, but the line was not too long and was moving. I ordered a milk tea boba, nothing fancy. I waited 25 minutes for my drink. The boba was hard and very, very chewy. The drink lacked flavor and did not have the brown sugar taste. Very disappointed.
google avatar

Thompson N.

Yelp
This is the second time we came here for bubble tea. The first time they were really good so we came here again and got the Ceylon milk tea which is a popular one. The milk tea tasted great almost like the Hong Kong style. We would definitely recommend this place if your a fan of bubble tea.
google avatar

Allison T.

Yelp
Located inside Mitsuwa Cafe. I order here for the convenience, not for the taste. This isn't the best place to get milk tea, but it's better than buying a bottled milk tea from Mitsuwa store or skipping it. Their smoothie prices is pretty expensive. I've never had the crepe, nor have I seen anyone eating it. The order does take a bit of time so be prepared to wait 5+ minutes.
google avatar

Phil S.

Yelp
B-Bee Crepe & Boba is located in the Mitsuwa food court. After eating some udon for lunch we were craving something cold & sweet. What could satisfy this craving more then a Lemon Passion Fruit Boba. Delicious cold sweet from the passion fruit w/a little tartness from the lemon w/boba balls at the bottom. This drink was the perfect compliment to a hot salty bowl of udon. So cold and refreshing.
google avatar

Shruti K.

Yelp
We tried the brown sugar and brown sugar matcha. Both were decent, boba was nice. The service was very slow, took almost 20mins to get our drinks

Teddy F.

Yelp
The service is slow. I was waiting 20 min and when I walked away they started saying last call for my order. Uhh I paid what do you mean last call? The creps are not worth the $11 I threw it out I got milk tea was ok 6$. Are the creps made fresh? Didn't taste like it and it's mainly frosting. And they dont have To go container ..

Yelp
Based on the reviews of other Yelpers, I stayed away from the boba here and went straight for the crepes. I've always been interested in trying this place out based on the very attractive decor, beautiful looking food models, bright colors, interesting menu, and line I see in front of the store. Unfortunately, the actual experience wasn't as impressive. After I ordered my food, I began to realize why the line was so long -- not really because it is super popular, but rather because of the wait time to receive food. Part of this is due to making fresh crepes, but another portion of it is the time it takes to assemble each crepe, which didn't seem to be as organized as it should be (like common elements should be ready to go and almost automatic in the process). Price was a bit high for the crepe, although fair given that it is a premium food court. I applaud the different mix of flavors and textures in the crepe, but didn't find the fresh cream or marscapone cheese to really add that much of a distinguishing aroma or flavor to the crepe. Visually, it looks great -- with a nice ice cream element in the center -- but in terms of flavor, it seemed like one big mash of items that didn't really have much synergy. Overall, great look but the food underdelivers in comparison to the great dessert places one can find in Chinatown.

Yelp
Decided to try them since I was at mitsuwa having lunch for a beverage. Ordered the matcha green tea milk and it was good. I would have given them more stars but they did not allow for any customization of your drink. This meant no combinations of flavors or fruits of any kind. This inability to cater to customer tastes is a little discouraging. I hope they become more flexible or other vendors open up serving boba milk teas and beverages.

Yelp
After chowing down on some decently good Japanese in the same food court, B-Bee offers a much needed dessert break with their selection of boba and crepes. Out of the two times that we've stopped here for a snack, my overall preference would be that the crepe completely kicks their boba out of the park. My first time visiting yielded a green tea latte boba drink. The boba itself was a bit chewier than normal and the green tea latte was nothing out of the ordinary. It looks like they pre-make everything in bulk and simply combine the ingredients once they're ordered. On the flip side, their crepe was a much better option. I opted for their #1 selection of Strawberry, Honey, and Vanilla Ice Cream. At first glance, my crepe didn't look the most appetizing, but after the first few bites I was satisfied. It was funny watching them struggle to scoop the ice cream out since it was so frozen. The young ladies working here with all very nice each time I've come, so props to them for handling such a crowded food court.

Sanae W.

Yelp
Yea it tasted good but paid $10 for something I thought was eating just crepe skin with just a hint of Nutella.. very very little whip cream and strawberries. Such a disappointment, especially after having and knowing what real crepes in Japan tastes like ...
google avatar

Matthew C.

Yelp
Terrible customer service. They were very rude to me. I got a 16 oz Brown Sugar Milk Tea and it's not worth it. I could make the same thing at home. It was literally 6$ for this and this is the worst Boba place I've ever been to.
google avatar

Deb W.

Yelp
They must have recently downgraded... The crepes are flat and tasteless now, no more delicious mochi balls, but now some cheap sweetened mochi substitute... Smaller portions of everything and the price is ENORMOUS... Used to be an expensive but wonderful treat, now is just a rip-off...
google avatar

Yelp
We had brown sugar milk teas. Huge wait and brisk service, but the drinks were delicious

Yelp
I really liked the idea of this place, but I have some issues with their execution. I ordered crepe #8 (soy bean powder, matcha ice cream, red bean, whipped cream). As I mentioned in my review of the ramen shop in the same area, the seating here is food court style; there are a lot of tables that you can sit at. Even with all of the tables, most of them were filled when we went. The parking lot was spacious! We didn't have any difficulties finding parking. Now to get into the crepe. As you can see in my picture, there was red bean oozing out the top. There was red bean in the top and in the bottom of the crepe, but not in the middle. The crepe was more doughy than anything else and the dough was bland. The matcha ice cream was the only good part of this crepe. It was delicious! You'd honestly be better off just ordering a cup of matcha ice cream and putting red bean on top. Also, even though it's rolled into a cone and looks easier to eat it was still really messy. Overall I was disappointed after eating such good ramen nearby. Maybe I'll try the boba, but I won't be back for the crepes.
google avatar

Dinora D.

Yelp
I was extremely disappointed with this place. They were out of about half of their menu. There was no boba, so I got an expensive "avocado smoothie"....which by the way tasted like a ton of ice blended with half an avocado. Definitely a skip for me.
google avatar

Niki R.

Yelp
As I continue my quest for the best boba tea shop in the Chicagoland area, I began to expand my search to locations far and wide. This place was located inside the giant Mitsuwa supermarket all the way in Arlington Heights. I tried their Thai milk tea and my sister got the taro milk tea. I was disappointed by the Thai milk tea as the flavor wasn't quite right and they didn't capture that classic Thai tea flavor. The taro on the other hand I liked more than I usually like taro, possibly because it again didn't quite capture the taro flavor. Overall fairly average milk teas though.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
Build your own crepes, bubble tea and smoothies at the Mitsuwa food court. Fun but given the choice i would opt for reLeaf.
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
Yum!! The taro bubble tea tastes like cookies and cream. The crepes are delicious - and huge! We will definitely be back when we're visiting Mitsuwa for a little treat for sure!

Vinnie S.

Yelp
So delicious will definitely come back again! Friendly service! Very relaxing atmosphere!
google avatar

Adam L.

Yelp
Worst Thai tea I ever had. My guess the cream/milk that was used is expired because it tastes super funky. I came a long way for this Thai tea as well so I'm very disappointed. I was going to go back and complain but it's lunch time and the line is long. Just very disappointed because the other two times I was here the Thai tea was excellent. Someone should definitely check the milk/cream that's being added because it's not good today.
google avatar

Tanya A.

Yelp
First, how can you not love crepes anything. Second, when you add Nutella it makes everything better! It was okay! I hate to say it but they crepe on it's own was blah, no flavoring. I didn't think it was possible, but he put way too much Nutella and not enough bananas. I would take a bite and it was get stuck to my entire mouth. Gross. Sugar overload. It also got stuck to the cardboard cone I was given. Had to attempt to pull it out with my fork. I also got a tea. He had suggest the #2. It was delicious. I probably would have liked it a lot more if I was able to take more than 4 sips. 3/4 of the cup Is filled with a combination of grapefruit, lemon, and ice. It's difficult to fill any actually tea in there. Realistically I won't be back...
google avatar

Yelp
Came here yesterday because Releaf was "out of all the toppings" for their milk tea. I've been here before so I figured I could update my previous review. After some difficulty placing the order we figured it out and got our drinks relatively quickly. The plain milk tea with the tapioca and jellies was the favorite. The jellies added a nice pop of sweetness. Although you can't adjust the sweetness I think they've gotten better at not making the drinks so sweet. The matcha drink had a lot of powder floating around it which we didn't like. The matcha flavor was not too strong and the sweetness level was good. Thai tea was the only drink that was way to sweet. We actually thought it tasted closer to frosting than tea. Disappointing but 2/3 were good. Overall I'd say my rating is the same. Hit or miss, some negatives and some positives. I wouldn't say don't come here but I also don't think it's one of the best places to get milk tea.
google avatar

Ali C.

Yelp
Great boba tea at a reasonable price. Service is a bit on the slow side but the product is good. We enjoyed the milk tea and added coffee jello (50 cents) for the extra spark. The only disappointment was the owner's refusal to serve water, not even at a price. " We do not serve water. You can get it elsewhere". Kind of off-putting but what can you do?
google avatar

Madhavi B.

Yelp
First of all, holy heck Mitsuwa. You've definitely fit a lot of flavor into one building. This stall is a one-stop shop if you're having sweet cravings. They have everything from dessert waffles (best kind of waffles), dessert waffles with ice cream, and BOBA (frozen and milk style). The best part of this place is that YOU can control how sweet you want your drink; ie you can tell them how much sugar syrup you want, so that you don't end up with an overly saturated cuppa sugar with a side of flavor (unless that's what you want). I tried the Taro milk tea with no extra syrup, and it was so good! The taro flavor is already sweet, so I could actually taste the flavor instead of sweetness. The boba were nice and soft, and the serving size was perfect. I'm intrigued to try their other flavors!

Michael K.

Yelp
Friendly service but the crepes are horribly undercooked. Very nice combinations of sweet treats but what's the point of the crepe is so grossly undercooked. Very disappointed for $12
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
A new crepe and boba place in mitsuwa's food court! I got the hibiscus sunrise boba drink, which was very refreshing. It consists of a fruity hibiscus tea, grapefruit, orange, and lemon. The boba is chewy and a great consistency. There is fresh fruit inside too. They have a soft opening special where 20 oz is only $3 which is a good deal. It is normally $5.98, which I personally would not pay for this drink. The regular milk tea is much more affordable, at $3 for 16 oz and $4 for 24 oz. They have flavors like english breakfast, Earl grey; and strawberry. I did not try the crepes, though they smelled good. Looks like they come in a cone, which is practical for eating! Classic crepes are $4 and savory and dulce ones are $5. Lots of flavors to choose from! Cash only.
google avatar

Mako Y.

Yelp
My favorite smoothie boba place. This is probably one of the very few places where the bobas aren't overcooked or sitting too long, they're always the right consistency. The smoothies are delicious. I haven't tried a flavor I didn't like. It's a little bit more expensive than other places, but this place never fails. The taste is always consistent.
google avatar

Yelp
Last time I ordered the milk tea with less ice, and I LOVED IT! Best bubble tea I've had in the Chicagoland area!! This time I got the matcha milk tea with less ice and the mango milk tea with less ice. They were not quite as good, and you could tell they were made with powder. Very very sweet as well!
google avatar

Nette B.

Yelp
This is inside the Mitsuwa Japanese Grocery where tgere is also food court. We ordered the crepe with almond. The crepe itself is yummy, inside is ice cream nuts and cream and they rolled it to make it like a cone. I do prefer to eat it rolled out. Perfect dessert, not too sweet! As for their boba, i ordered it before and not liking it. It's made of powder not real fruit or it does not taste like it.
google avatar

Karen K.

Yelp
there aren't any bubble tea spots in the area except for this place and yet i find myself willing to drive further out to get my bubble tea fix. the taste is really artificial and off and worse of all super expensive! i definitely would pass on this place as there are plenty of other goodies at mitsuwa!
google avatar

Joanna T.

Yelp
I'm between a 2 and 3 on this one - really 2.5. We stopped for a refreshment after shopping at Mitsuwa and it was either this or the Matcha tea stand. (Nice to have options for drinks for sure) The mister wanted their mango smoothie but they were out so he settled on a banana version that was "ok". I went with a hibiscus tropical that had no dairy - but nice citrus fruit along with the tea. I wish I had known you could order low/no sweetener but I didn't so mine was a tad sweet for my personal taste. I'd rate my drink a 3.5 and the Misters a 2. I'm guessing there aren't a lot of bubble tea options in the burbs?

Yelp
This place is awesome! I ordered the 'house' milk tea boba. It was great. A little sweet but it didn't stop me from drinking it within a few minutes. After polishing off the first one, I ordered another one to go and asked for less sweet. It was perfect. The house boba was with black tea. I loved it. They have lots of varieties of flavors and combinations. I noticed that some the pictures with menus offered savory crepes posted here on Yelp, but didn't see them on the menu. I asked if they served savory crepes and they told me no they don't have them anymore, but it didn't stop me from ordering the strawberry crepe. The strawberry crepe with vanilla ice cream, strawberries, honey, and whip cream. Not only was it delicious but it was big enough for two. The whip cream they have is sooooo good! The ladies that were working behind the counter were friendly, helpful and all round delightful. If you give this place a try you won't be disappointed. I will be back as Boba is my new obsession.

Yelp
If only I could give 0 stars... because that's exactly the rating this place deserves. Pictures speak a thousand words, but I must preface my photo with the horrendous experience I had here. It was my first time at B-Bee Crepe & Boba and I got excited when I saw that they served earl grey milk tea--my favorite! However, I was told that they were only serving 3 types of tea and earl grey milk tea was not one of them -_- I should have left then when I had the chance... Instead, I ordered a very standard drink: boba milk tea with NO ICE. The girl at the register told me that their portions are made to have ice included so my order (without ice) may be slightly less than the quantity of a full sized cup. I acknowledged--and even appreciated--her warning, but I've always found, in my experience at multiple boba institutions, that the difference is minimal. UNTIL NOW. The attached photo shows exactly how my order was given, in that exact quantity. I. Was. Speechless. I mean, just LOOK AT IT! How can they even serve this drink with any dignity? That is some mudda bullshit right there. I normally would go off on the employees for situations like this, demanding HALF of my money back because I was only given HALF of a drink... But my boyfriend held me back and reminded me he had a flight to catch. Still gets my blood boiling just thinking about it, but I receive some consolation knowing that I've warned enough of my friends to stay the hell away from this place. In sharing this post, hopefully I've also helped fellow Yelpers avoid the same experience too.
