The 10 Best West African Restaurants In Houston

"You might think you’re walking into a nightclub when you step into Baba Jollof in Alief, but outside of the blue mood lighting and glossy couches, this Nigerian restaurant is unpretentious and cozy. Even though the name is Baba Jollof, stick to the smoky beef suya or the goat pepper soup, which is full of habanero peppers and scotch bonnet that team up to test the strength of your spice tolerance. During the day, most folks come to Baba Jollof for a quick takeout lunch, but come during the evening if you want to make the most of the dramatic purple mood lighting, and eat a sinus-clearing soup in what feels like a secret club. The Best West African Restaurants in Houston | Eater Houston

"Citizens of Senegal, Nigeria, and Ghana have, at times, playfully argued over who has the best jollof for centuries. Baba Jollof removes some of the lighthearted competition by offering darn good jollof that would appeal to anyone. Baba Jollof’s Hookah Lounge is also worth a visit." - Lane Gillespie

I was introduced to Baba (Mama) Jollof by a dear friend of mine named Danny. And I've had nothing but good experiences every time I've visited. Even my daughter, who doesn't care for Nigerian food, loved the goat meat pepper soup. So, I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Google
One word....Amazing! Im always skeptical about trying new Nigerians spots because it's always a hit or miss. I ordered Uber delivery with Baba J for the first time. The food came in PIPING HOT! I was happy about that. I kept this order simple for my first time because I wanted to assess the quality. I ordered rice and stew with chicken and also beans and plantain with assorted meat. The beans were so good! Im embarrassed to say better than my mom's lol. The rice and stew was good. Ill definitely order both again. Considering how tasty AND hot my selections were, I'll definitely try their other foods. The portion sizes are very generous so that's also a plus. Don't hesitate ordering, and especially for food delivery. You won't regret it.

Google
This restaurant has the best Nigerian food in Houston hands down!! The food is always so flavorful and cooked to perfection. I’ve had the jollof rice many times and it’s always consistently delicious. The food always comes out in a timely manner. I love the atmosphere as well. The restaurant is very clean. I love the Afrobeats music they play as well. They also offer hookah as well if you are into that. This is by far my favorite Nigerian restaurant!

Google
This is my go-to Nigerian restaurant, but it can be pricey if you order through Uber Eats. It's worth it. I love the designer stew, Spanish stew with vegetables and beef, beef suya, malt drinks, and jollof rice. The fish is also amazing. It taste more like chicken breast to me. Very meaty. If you can't get spicy foods, be careful though.

My friend and I decided to try out this spot based on their appealing pictures. We got there and placed an order to go. The lady told us the food was going to take about 20mins. We decided to try out their overpriced $30 hookah while we waited. It took them 30 mins to bring out the hookah. I voiced my concern to who appeared to be the owner/cook/hookah maker. With no apology, he decided to give us a $5 discount on the hookah. The hookah itself was TRASH, worst hookah I ever had! could not even smoke it. Complete waste of money. The food took an hour to come out, it was bland, no flavor whatsoever. We all know a good suya is supposed to be bursting with flavors topped with fresh cut onions. I mentioned the onions while ordering the food, did not get them. The Jollof rice was also lacking flavor and dry. My friend complained about the flavor of his food as well. Let me just say this was a complete waste of $80, highly disappointed. Smh

Google
Amazing Nigerian Food. I have eaten at many Nigerian restaurants over the years, but Baba Jollof is by far the best I’ve ever had. The food is fresh, well seasoned, and well portioned every single time. It’s rare to frequent a restaurant that turns out good food each and every time. I’ll be a customer for life!

Google
This was a cool little spot in Houston. I was not sure what to expect because Nigerian Restaurant are a hit or miss. This however was just a nice hit. Quiet for lunch and potentially a good spot to work at least early in the day. Plenty of room and the food was delicious. I warn you if your spice level have become Americanized abeg avoid this place. The food spicy wey e go burn pesin mouth. I had the Asun which is always a favorite of mine. So so delicious and so spicy. For lunch I had Ayamase and white rice. This was bad idea on a 100 degree day. Lord have mercy I finished my water and Fanta before I finished the food. This food make pesin sweat past. Overall I liked this place just quiet in a nice shopping plaza not difficult to find. The staff was very friendly and the ambiance was just perfect. I’ll see them again on my next Houston trip. Well done Baba Jollof team

Yelp
Well, to start off, it was EXTREMELY hard to find their actual website as the link on here and typing it into google takes me to something totally different. (Pictures of what I am referring to are below). Once I was able to actually find the site I called in an order for pickup which was very easy. The restaurant is very small but nice. Now... let's get into the food... ‍ I had such high hopes based on their reviews from here and TikTok. My hopes were shattered once I actually started eating. I love African food and this was very disappointing. ALL of the meat was EXTREMELY over cooked to the point it tasted like jerky. There was very little spice in the jollof rice and the goat was more fat and skin than meat. The vegetable stew was good but I didn't expect fish to be in it since I didn't order the seafood one. It also has a lot of fish bones throughout it. The plantains were sweet but not as seared as I'm used to, they were more on the mushy side. The staff is nice however.

Yelp
I have been coming to Baba Jollof for almost 2 years now, and I probably eat her almost twice a week. Out of all the Nigerian Restaurants/lounges that I have been to this one is definitely my favorite. The service is great and the food comes out in a timely manner. The place is cleaned , and the set up is dope, they have seats and booths where you can sit and enjoy your food . If you are a Hookah smoker they have hookah there as well. But wait Baba Jollof is also a BYOB establishment !! They have several TVs around the establishment as well as music playing. A good place to bring a group of friends to have a good time, or you can come alone and just enjoy the vibe. I would say my favorite is the rice and stew with goat meat, nice size portions and it is sure to feel you up. This place is a must if you haven't been! 5 stars Baba Jollof ! 5 stars !

Yelp
Best African food I've had in a very long time. My okra soup with dried fish was so delicious. I only had bones left. The pounding yams were great but next time I'll try the oatmeal. Nice atmosphere open space lots of room for large event.

Yelp
I got jollof rice with chicken. It was so amazing! Spicy and delicious. The lady who works there, I believe she said her name was Kate was very nice. Will be returning for the great food, and going to try the hookah next time!

Yelp
I'm back again.... Once again they did not disappoint! Let's start with the owners they are Nigerian real authentic Nigerians that speak their language within this establishment. As a foodie I appreciate culture as I explore their cuisine. I was surprised when I found out that cooks behind the scene were all men! Yeah I couldn't believe how good the food taste for it to be all men who were cooking the food. Yeah, that was a bias statement but hey! You don't find a lot of men who are great cooks let alone the owner of the business. The inside looks cute. Small but spaced out enough so you don't feel like you are on top of other customers. It's definitely a try.

Yelp
Jollof was spot on! Spot on! I was pleased. Portions are heaping. Each order comes with huge portion of jollof, meat and succulent plantains. The environment: small clean restaurant placed in a gas station strip mall. In side is very neat, decor is chíc. Would probably seat 25-30 comfortably. Several TVs. Supposedly there will be hookah at some point. When I visited, stay-at-home orders had just been lifted and not many were voyaging out to eat. I was the only one in the restaurant. But they were nice and accommodating and I feel this place has great odds despite a rough start with COVID season!

Yelp
Worst Suya Ever The Suya was so overcooked to where it wasn't even edible. If you're not going to produce a quality product, why even bother. Never again. The manager was very apologetic, but the folks cooking in the kitchen couldn't care less. Yuk.

Yelp
I was craving Rice and Beef. I was looking at the different places on my Doordash and Ubereats app and comparing them, because I'm such a picky gal. My safe place is usually Marie African, but I wanted to try a different restaurant. Royal Point was on my list to try but they were closed, so that was a bummer. Now, I really like Jollof Rice, but once I discovered Coconut Rice a few years ago, I usually order that with Goat or Beef at most places. I love the fact that it has Shrimp and Carrots in it. I have wanted to try Baba Jollof for a while now and since Uber Eats delivers I decided to give them a try. Looking at the menu I discovered that they not only have the regular Jollof Rice but they also have a Party Jollof Rice. I was definitely down to try that so I ordered that with beef. The rice itself looked tasty and very plentiful. Once I tried it though it was pretty dry, and the chicken in it was very hard. I didn't know if it was old chicken(not freshly made) or overcooked chicken. It had tons of Peas in it which I don't really care for(but that's my preference). It lacked carrots though, there were a few and I really like carrots so if it was loaded with carrots I wouldn't have complained at all. I only ate a small portion the rice. The beef would've been superb if they had simmered it in the tomato stew. It seems they just cooked it and that was it, so it tasted like beef without the Nigerian flavor. I love the Stew, so if the meat was slathered in it I wouldn't have said a word. I tried two of the Plantains and they were good. I like my Plantains with a little crisp to them and they had that. I would give them another try, but I would go to the restaurant and order instead of ordering thru an app.

Yelp
I ordered take out. The cook came out twice to confirm my order. Super nice. Good service. Laid back. They are set up for dine-in but it feels more of a carry out place. I ordered the fish egusi. It came with an order of fufu. I absolutely love the flavors. The right amount of spicy. 10/10!!! I'll definitely try other items as well as continue ordering the fish egusi.

Chanda C.

Yelp
The food was good however I haven't eaten Nigerian Cuisine much. The okra soup was extra spicy.

Yelp
Loved this place. Great music and service was fast. We ordered Jollof and plantains with a side of suya. Portions are big we ended up taking about 2/3s home and reheated it the next day . They have hookah as well. We didn't try it this visit but will definitely try it next time.
google avatar

Yaya A.

Yelp
I have eaten here several times, but leaving my first review. Truly have enjoyed my meals each time! The jollof has just the right level of spice; plantains are always juicy; and the egusi (my favorite) is made pleasantly. This is definitely a place I would recommend !

Yelp
Tried the pepper goat soup and jollof rice which were both really good. The pepper soup was spicy but not slough ur tongue and question ur whole reason for existence spicy. I liked the jollof rice coz it wasn't dry..hope that makes sense. The establishment itself is not ur typical African restaurant (no offense to other African restaurants). It's small but very clean with a contemporary decor. The place also doubles as a hookah bar, I don't think they serve alcohol but it would be nice if it were a BYOB like other hookah lounges. Reason for the 4 stars? Although the food was good the meat was scant in my pepper soup and I think the pieces were way too big. Secondly the restaurant was way too dark for daytime. I guess its ok at night but during the day it's way too dark for a restaurant. Would definitely return n try their hookah!

Joannna A.

Yelp
I went on a weekday afternoon for takeout, so I wasn't expect to see a hookah crowd. It's very stylish, hip, and "comfortable" As far as the food is concerned, A+. I ordered the fried rice and plantain with fish. In fact I'm writing this review majorly because how pleased I am with the amount of food that was given for the price. I got an entire fried fish, and enough rice to feed two people at once. When it comes to nigerian food, this isn't usually the case. And it is DELICIOUS, AUTHENTIC, AND PLENTY! I can't wait to go back for the hookah experience

S K.

Yelp
A kind gentleman took me to Baba Jollof. It was our first time dining at this restaurant. I fell in love with the pepper soup with fish and rice! The spiciness of the pepper soup and the tenderness of the fish delicately hit my palate with the goodness of Nigerian Cuisine. If you like soup, you will absolutely love the pepper soup! Note: The word *hit is intentional b/c, the pepper soup is Hot & Spicy!
google avatar

J J.

Yelp
The suya was pretty good. My order was not correct, although it was ordered online. So therefore I didn't get a chance to taste the fried rice. They have me two plates of the same item. The food was good just not what I ordered and they didn't bother to tell me this upon pickup. I have had better food in Houston but this is the closest to me. I will try them again and will just triple check my order next time.

Christian D.

Yelp
Such great flavor! I ordered my food for lunch to be delivered through Uber Eats and it came within a reasonable amount of time. The portion lasted for an entire other meal (dinner)... & it was so flavorful and satisfying.
google avatar

Tumi M.

Yelp
Got the Jollof and suya. Jollof is pretty good, suya was horrible (doesn't even deserve to be called Suya). They just cooked some dry meat and sprinkled suya spice on the top

Jennifer P.

Yelp
My first time eating Nigerian food. What an experience! Love the spice, love the jollof rice, pounded yam, egusi (the best), and plantains. One word of caution: the assorted meat option might be beyond your pallet if you have never tried this food before (go for the beef or fish). A well appreciated experience nonetheless! Would do it again for sure!!

Loveof L.

Yelp
Love this place! One of my favorites, actually it is my favorite! I order on doordash all the time...the only thing is the service face to face is lacking. The place on the inside is decent, looks like a small club almost. If your looking for amazing authentic African food this is definitely the place, however if u go inside be prepared to wait at least an hour even if you're the only one inside lol. Well maybe perfection just takes time :)
google avatar

Lisa I.

Yelp
The best Joloff I've had! Chicken is tinder- dodo just right!! Top it off with Fanta and water! I'm a happy girl!!
google avatar

Racheal S.

Yelp
I am thoroughly disappointed. The jollof rice is completely tasteless. It was way to spicy and had no seasoning not even simple salt or magi. It was as if they blended 4 scotch bonnets per plate. The plantains was half way fried again with no salt. Idk if there is a shortage of salt there. The MEAT... smh all I dot was shaki and cow skin nothing else. When I called the owner or who ever to complain about it and to see if I can either switch it for something else or a refund, he said sorry and then hung up on me. This is exactly why I struggle supporting black because. The customer service was absolutely TRASH

Ravonna D.

Yelp
Food was good and flavorful and spicy. The wait was a little long. Overall nice establishment.
google avatar

Nastasia H.

Yelp
Love their food. The Suya is just perfect and the Jollof Rice is too! Meat is nice and tender. I called my order in and it took 45 minutes but the food is well worth it, just will take my time getting it next time! My husband likes their goat pepper soup! We will definitely be back! Great place!!!

Yelp
Went there last night -food was f**kin amazing Best Nigerian Restaurant in Houston!

Cornelia J.

Yelp
This was our first visit! The food was amazing. Atmosphere and customer service was stellar. I recommend Baba Jollof!

Jessica N.

Yelp
The Goat meat peppe soup is a must haveee ! It is sooo delicious

Naomi O.

Yelp
I've been there twice and the food is so good! I am so sad that corona virus is not giving them the business that they deserve. They have the best suya that I have had in Houston and their portion size for the food is HUGEE, I am not even exaggerating. I will continue to patronize them and I hope more people will find this spot and patronize them also!!!! Also the prices are very reasonable!

Marcus C.

Yelp
I had the special Jollof rice yesterday and it was so good! I may go back today! I will definitely be back!
