Detroit’s 19 Best Breakfasts

"An homage to owner Kris Lelcaj’s father, Babo (Albanian shorthand for dad) is an all-day diner in Midtown. The menu comprises creative, artisanal takes on comfort food classics. The lemon ricotta pancakes are a sweet way to start the day; kimchi fans may favor the kimchi patatas bravas, which deliver a nice, subtle heat. The spot’s challah bread is nothing to sleep either and and its thick, buttery edges make for the perfect vessel for a breakfast sandwich." - Serena Maria Daniels

Babo, a ‘High-End Diner,’ Is Opening in Detroit’s Park Shelton - Eater Detroit

"Restaurateur Kris Lelcaj, formerly of SavCo Hospitality in Ann Arbor, is bringing a new “high-end diner” to the Park Shelton building near the Detroit Institute of Arts, Crain’s reports. The all-day restaurant dubbed Babo is set to open in mid-June in a 1,964-square-foot space previously home to short-lived Park Shelton Pizza, Detroit Pizza Company, and Good Girls Go to Paris Crepes. Babo’s menu will include options like bolognese, chilaquiles, and eggs benedict. The news comes as other building tenants including a bra retailer moved on due to significant rent hikes. Babo will join other high-end diners landing in Detroit this year including Karl’s at the Siren Hotel." - Brenna Houck

I wanted a spot close to the Detroit Institute of Arts with a range of options. The Countryman Breakfast was on point and the perfect amount. It started raining while I was there so I stayed and had a Hennything is Possible cocktail. Hennessy VS, lemonade, strawberry puree, and grenadine. Perfect spot if you're going to the museum or Wayne State. Great staff, great music too. Also good coffee options.

Google
Highly recommend for solo diners and dining with friends! This is my second time at this place, so I decided to give them their props! I had Alandria this time, she was a great server, there's also a brunette barista, a hostess, and dark-haired food runner who were all excellent! I was greeted swiftly by someone, they had great teamwork because the hostess was on the phone, the barista assured me they'd be right with me. I was seated quickly. The food was solid- I think the food quality for the price and relaxed elevated atmosphere is great! They had no problem substituting for things on my dish, my iced chai was perfect-not too sweet - and they all worked together to ensure I was having a great experience throughout my visit. Would definitely visit a third time and beyond. Highly recommend! See you next time!

Google
I've been coming here for about 3 years now. I love the food! The staff are young college students, but they are great. Very friendly staff. Music is always on point, and the vibe is always chill. This is my favorite breakfast place.

Google
Really great spot to get some food! Prices are very decent and portions are not huge, they are just right. Waitress was really good. Would try again. Great spot for brunch for sure.

Google
Amazing brunch spot. So cute. Great aesthetics. Customer service was very nice. Food delicious. They have mimosas. If it’s 2 people. Get the bottle for $40. It’s worth it.

Google
Babo is a pretty solid breakfast spot overall. Their coffee is delicious. I got a hot mocha latte (pictured here) and it was so tasty - not too sweet. It’s a little on the pricier side, but the service is always excellent and the food comes out fast. The potatoes look good but taste industry average, and the granola bowl was good. I don’t care for the lemon in it but the fruit was fresh! The food has a picturesque quality and the location is convenient if you’re going to the DIA or even going into downtown. I’ve been here a handful of times at this point and I’d happily go back.

supervegangeek

Google
Good savory vegan brunch options! They have a vegan scramble that i think is just egg (the vegan egg brand), vegan chorizo and a vegan burger. I got the huevos rancheros with vegan scramble and vegan chorizo with no queso and it was amazing! My partner got the diego bowl made vegan and the potatoes were perfectly crispy but soft on the inside. A number of the savory breakfast options can be easily made vegan, and a couple lunch options (all burgers). Also have great beverages with an oatmilk option. On the pricey side but worth it for the quality, and its right next to the DIA

Google
Super tasty food and friendly staff. Would highly recommend giving it a try. Really enjoyed my food, the Ruben was delicious as well as the breakfast!!

Yelp
Great place for a hearty healthy breakfast before hitting up the DIA. Just around the corner from the gallery is this hidden Gem. We had breakfast and could t have been happier we chose this place. The service was quick, they seated us without a reservation but it might be recommended to not be disappointed. We both ordered the Eggs Benny, it had sweet bacon and avocado slices with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce. It was so good! It didn't stand a chance. The place itself is very charming, great music and good looking people.

Yelp
I've been here twice and both times we're decent. They have great Creme Brulé French toast and relatively friendly servers. The cafe itself is cure in terms of decor and the menu has many creative sounding offerings. All of that said... I took my staff here for lunch a few months ago and was a bit embarrassed for a few reasons: -Two staffers ordered BLs and the bacon was undercooked (they didn't say anything until we were in the car because they "didn't want to be difficult") -It was early summer and not quite hot outside yet, but the temperature in the restaurant was very warm. They serve water without ice in very small glasses and when it's busy, it is hard to flag down a server for more -One of my staffers is a larger person and they have limited size inclusive seating. The chair was very uncomfortable for her and I felt terrible for her

Yelp
Had a party of 2 with no reservations on a Sunday and were seated within 5 minutes. Staff were attentive and speedy. Decided on the cappuccino and the chai tea latte, both delicious. The chai tea was especially sweet (the topping has roasted sugar!) so caution if you're sensitive to too much sweetness. As for entrees, the Breakfast Smash was both filling and tasty. Although the sandwich breading was thick ( roughly 1.5 - 2 inches in thickness) the other flavors came through. Served with crispy seasoned (course salt and black pepper) diced potatoes as a side. Second entree, the Three Mushroom omelette, offered a light umami taste including truffle and a thin layer of goat cheese that satiated one's palette but didn't over fill, also offered with a side of diced crispy potatoes or toast.

Yelp
Can't lie, this is one of my favorite restaurants! The layout/design is simple, the food is simple and the drinks are pretty simple. All the simpleness equates to greatness for me though lol. Love the staff and I have a great experience every time. I usually go with a Kale Caesar Salad w/ Salmon and Truffle Fries. I also love the Kimchi Patatas Bravas and Waffle and Berries.
google avatar

Yelp
Good job Babo! Great service - Tina was our waiter. The challah french toast is AMAZING! You don't need syrup - it's that good. I also recommend the Diego bowl. Food was fresh and came out fast. I would recommend and will be back!

Yelp
Breakfast was delicious! Breakfast/Brunch is my favorite food ever! We enjoyed our meal today; I ordered the mushroom omelette with sourdough bread, side of sausage and churros. My girls both ordered the breakfast smash. We all enjoyed our food immensely. Full of flavor and delicious. The mimosas were good too, perfect ratio of alcohol to juice. The elder vice was good, not very helpful as she hadn't tried a few things we asked about. Also they don't serve single plain pancakes. That should definitely be a side. I wanted to order a pancake to taste and I love pancakes and she stated they only serve blueberry ricotta ones. Side pancakes go well as an extra side, for children and just yummy goodness! The ambiance was cool an ecletic collection of things. I hope to return soon!

Yelp
Woke up and wanted breakfast. Found this place and walked in. It's a speakeasy vibe and plenty of seats. Oh we walked in...got lucky and got a table...make sure you make a reservation before coming here. They told us we had 45-50 minutes to eat and were kicking you out....in a good way...I think they have a reservation for this table coming up behind us. So we were greeted and taken to our table. I ordered the Chicken & Waffles w/ Orange Juice....and Strawberries on the side. Chicken and Waffles were good....Chicken was hot and flavorful. Orange Juice was good too. I also heard the French Toast was good too. If you're in Detroit definitely swing by and check this place out.

Yelp
Visited my bff who's stationed in Detroit. We were so hungry so we stopped by here on the way to her home from the airport. We didn't have a reservation but were seated right away. Place is small but cozy and cute. They have great brunch menu and some Asian fusion dish. I tried hot Korean style wings and they were crispy and good. The sub that we ordered was on point too.

Yelp
So glad I found this place on Yelp! Super cool brunch spot! Not too big which makes for a great atmosphere. Food and drinks were very yummy. We ordered 5 different things and all of them absolutely hit the spot. That blackberry mimosa is something else tho... buuuffff so good - a must-get if you like mimosas. Coffee was very tasty as well and lastly service was on point! Overall 5 stars! We will be back when in town again!

Yelp
Stellar food and beverages. Make a reservation ahead of time! My party did not have one on a Saturday for lunch (about 2pm) and we did have about a 20 min wait. The space itself is cramped and claustrophobic and the chairs are downright uncomfortable. Almost no real estate in the minute two-top after entrees were dropped. That was the only unpleasant aspect of the experience, but it was significant! Enjoyed the wild mushroom and truffle omelette and a seasonal winter cocktail. My dining companion remarked that the kiddo cheeseburger was one of the best they'd ever eaten.
google avatar

Sofia P.

Yelp
Had a lovely start to the day here, my friend and I really enjoyed our lattes! The mushroom truffle omelette was good, I thought it was going to be a flavor bomb but in my opinion it needs some more pizazz/seasoning. The French toast was great though- I would recommend their sweeter options if you're in between savory and sweet. Clean and cute interior, and attentive service.

Yelp
Such a cute brunch place in Detroit. We stopped by before heading to a Lions game. We had reservations and were sat on time. Reservations are a must. Food was super solid. Espresso martini was delish. Service was excellent (10 stars). Babo will be a regular stop for us before home games!

Yelp
Chic, cheap, and cozy We were looking for some brunch, and I am so glad we decided on Babo! You enter into a chic-designed space, with fun art adorning the walls. Great natural light fills the space and lifts the vibe. We were greeted quickly by a kind and warm server. The menu is a concise list of fun flavors like kimchi patatas bravas. The price range for all the items was excellent, under $10 per person (we had a party of three). And the portion sizes were more than ample! All three of us were full the rest of the afternoon, plus I was full after just one-half of my sandwich. Also, not that this will apply to your visit, but I ordered a Hot Chocolate, and they brought us another one on the house! So easy to say that we were happy, felt taken care of, and allowed to sit and enjoy our conversation and meals. We visited on a Tuesday, and nearly every table was full, also people were streaming in the door for either pickups or coffee to go. All that considered, it was not noisy or overcrowded. Next time I am in a brunch mood, Babo will be top-of-mind for places to go.

Yelp
This was my first time at Babo after getting a lot of recommendations to go. I must say the food and service was good but there were some things I wish would've been better. The waiter mentioned being new and that is completely okay we've all been new to a job unsure of certain things and I was glad he let us know that. The one thing I wish they did a better job of was when ordering tea I wasn't asked about honey or sugar and when I received it my tea had began to cool additionally the hot coco was really good however, the foam was really thick and without a utensil to mix it in I don't believe I got the full experience. The food was really good the wings I wish they were a truly spicy as the description stated they were more sweet than spice only thing I'd change about taste. Secondly a few items weren't hot however did not lack taste! The whipped cream was also a lot and I would've liked some butter versus the whipped cream. But the food was truly good. Babo is a really cute spot with light ambiance music but nothing to loud you can definitely go have a good meal (and drink) and able to connect with whoever you are dinning with. It almost reminds me of a Panamanian coffee shop welcoming and inviting to all. I would definitely go back as the food was good and staff was friendly

Yelp
Babo is a beautiful restaurant near Wayne State University located right on Woodward at Kirby street. It was our first time here and when I made the reservation the dining room was full with only high top and bar seating available. We chose the high top, which was comfortable for two. The downside to the high top / bar area is that it's located directly in front of the door. Since it's winter, every patron coming or going let in a strong cold breeze, however, they have the heat strategically placed to recover quickly. Seconds of cold were immediately replaced by warmth. We ordered Shakshuka, a Frida Skillet and the Lemon Ricotta pancakes. The Shaksuka comes with poached eggs. Knowing how I am about eggs (I absolutely cannot take gooey whites) I ordered my poached eggs "medium" specifically stating I did not want gooey whites, they need to be cooked. No matter the source, a soft poached egg has a slightly undercooked white and very runny yolk, a medium poached egg has a solid white and runny yolk, and a hard poached egg has a solid white and mostly cooked yolk. Not only did my eggs come out with gooey whites, when we asked for them to be cooked again - with no goo, the waitperson says "the chef said that's how a medium poached egg is cooked". I'm not a chef, but I can google with the best of them. They brought out two more eggs that were only slightly less gooey (on one side). Needless to say, my plate had quite a bit of egg on it at the end of our meal. **Edit - Supergeil in Corktown on Michigan Ave also has Shakshuka with poached eggs. They got it right on the first try.** The Frida bowl was good, though slightly lacking in volume for the price. Potatoes are cheap and (our opinion) there should have been more of them to support the dish. The lemon ricotta pancakes were the star of the show. Fresh lemon zest and tart blueberries along with perfectly cooked pancakes. Yum. While we enjoyed much, there were a few things that could have been better. We'll probably try again in the future.

Yelp
Came here with a group of people for a rainy Friday brunch. I heard it gets busy over the weekends. The place is small and so it can get noisy fast. As the restaurant filled, it was hard to hear the other people in my party. Service was fast and efficient. I got the wild mushroom & truffle omelette ($14) This is an American-style three egg omelette that has the wild mushroom incorporated into the egg batter, and then it's stuffed with the goat cheese and onion confit. There was an appropiate amount of chevre-a little goes a long way! Unfortunately, I couldn't taste any of the onion. There was some canned truffle shavings on top, with muted flavor. I got the home fries on the side, and they were the star of the dish. They were the perfect crispy-chewy texture with a fluffy inside. Note: This place is great for vegans as they can sub for animal free alternatives. The bathrooms are single room bathrooms and the one I went to had a baby changing station.
google avatar

Shay J.

Yelp
My wife wanted Steak and Eggs for her bday breakfast. The online menu listed it as an option but the menu in house did not. Our breakfasts were both yummy but my coffee was lukewarm and not good at all.
google avatar

Christal P.

Yelp
It's nice to find a place with tasty, healthy options. I enjoyed my Harvest Salad with Salmon. However, some of the food is overly salty. My salmon was well-cooked but too salty. Same with the Truffle Fries. My friend ordered the Korean Beef Cheesesteak with Sweet Potato Fries. The sweet potato fries were less salty so I recommend that over regular or truffle fries. I have not tried breakfast, but that appears to be what they are known for, so that may be where you'll find Babo's best dishes. As a COVID-conscious individual, I'm not a fan of how the tables are so close together, and there are no open windows or options for outdoor dining.

Yelp
Excellent food and service. Love the mixture of brunch standards and the ecclectic versions of the standards. Highly recommend.

Yelp
10/10 PLEASE GO!!! Show your support to these amazing people, their kindness won me over!! A homeless man came in hugging everyone waving at everyone (the employees) like he knew them and they gave him so cold water to take with him, food was amazing drinks even better, not over priced at all
google avatar

Ted J.

Yelp
Nice, classy spot with a delicious brunch offered daily. They took care of my family, even after we kept changing our minds about the time, number of people, where to sit... They are great
google avatar

Kai C.

Yelp
This is a small spot with big flavor. Very bright on the inside. Table seating or half booth, half table situation. I made a reservation just to be on the safe side. We were seated immediately. They have cocktails or nonalcoholic drink options. I love some pickled red onions & was excited to be able to add that to my eggs benny. The English muffin was so soft! Bacon cooked well. I added a side of Brussels sprouts because I love them. Theirs did not disappoint! I'll go back & recommend to a friend.
google avatar

Loletha D.

Yelp
Cute little relaxed environment; busy but people eat and leave. Staff was amazing and very knowledgeable of menu; avo toast was just ok, the bread was tough; the chicken was phenomenal! The baecation drink I really enjoyed(see menu for ingredients)
google avatar

Alicia S.

Yelp
5 Star for the mushroom omelette but the French toast, my son rated a 10 out of 10! Don't be late for your reservation, they run a tight ship!
google avatar

Devin L.

Yelp
Very cool atmosphere and nice staff! Food was very taste and drinks were just as good! Definitely recommend
google avatar

Yelp
Nice clean space, great food, quick service. Bloody Mary was kind of simple for $15, but great flavor in the mix. Breakfast tacos were a huge portion and very good...coffee is excellent. Watching the parking, DPD is looking to flex their $45 ticketing power.
google avatar

Yelp
Pleasant experience for brunch on a Friday morning. We made a reservation for 10:30am, but there were plenty of open tables. I got the mushroom omelet and my husband got the lemon ricotta pancakes. Omelet was one of the best I've had at a restaurant, creamy and not dry at all. They are very generous with the side of toast (I got challah toast). The pancakes are huge and of the cakey/dense variety as opposed to light and fluffy. Probably don't order the dish if the quality of syrup is important to you. Solid food, great service, and decently comfortable. we hope to be back again! For people with kids, there was a changing table in the bathroom but we didn't see high chairs.

Yelp
A last minute visit with a local friend for ChaiLatte & AVO Toast. Food & bev were tasty. Ambiance comfortable. Servers attentive and professional. Word is it gets very busy during lunchtime...but worth fitting it into your day.

Yelp
Babo was just what our brunch needed. It is a super cute, cozy spot located on WSU on Woodward right by the DIA. We walked right in (luckily) but there is an online reservation link - the smart way to dine in! The service was on point. She was friendly, patient, and suggestive! We started off with a couple chai lattes - mine I ordered dirty. It was one of the best chai's I've ever drank. Amazing! The OG was made to perfection. We opted for chicken and waffles & and the eggs benny. We were both very satisfied with the scratch made dishes. We will definitely be back to Babo! It's a refreshing switch up to the 1.5hr wait for the Dime Store- and the food quality is equal. Delicious, creative, & addictive! Keep up the amazing work, Babo!
google avatar

Bella B.

Yelp
Good. It felt more like a place to be seen for hipsters and millennials, especially since the local university is across the way. Packed. Make reservations. No paper menu. QR code menu for website. Modern, clean lines, bright, industrial. Had full bar. Street metered parking. They will ticket you beyond 2 hour limit which you can't add more time on app. Food... my companions enjoyed theirs, but they aren't foodies. My dish lacked seasoning. Fine, but nothing thrilled me. I just got back from Hawaii, and there's no comparison. Service was slightly scattered. I would like to try other scenes around the city.
google avatar

Torrie M.

Yelp
My new fave! Great service, healthy and delicious ingredients, and adorable inside! They were able to fit us in without a reservation and we loved it here! Very vegetarian friendly! Would definitely go back!
google avatar

Munzer R.

Yelp
I came here for brunch and was really impressed by the food. The prices were good, the quality was fantastic, and they had really large portion sizes. They can definitely get busy, so I would recommend trying to make a reservation ahead of time. I think this is a solid option for brunch in the city and would highly recommend.
google avatar

Tian C.

Yelp
Ordered breakfast smash and truffle omelette. Very good, even as a pickup order. Will order again. Service is always good when I've dined in.
google avatar

DeMario M.

Yelp
Hands down some of the best food I've had in Detroit. The Diego skillet was and the lemon ricotta pancakes were absolutely amazing. Also have a French 75 which is on the menu. The service was on point. All the staff was mad nice. The vibe inside the restaurant is a little small but it's nice. Also I tried going to this restaurant about 3 times before I finally made a reservation. It's hard to walk in during lunch/brunch hours. The bar is really small so not a lot of space if you don't have a reservation.
google avatar

Annie G.

Yelp
Delicious! Stopped in on a Sunday morning around 10:30 and it was a 40 min wait for three. You can order coffee/drinks at the bar while you wait. I think you can also make reservations. It's a cute spot, nice decor and wall art. Food was amazing. I got the eggs Benedict which came with potatoes and we split the lemon ricotta pancakes, so fluffy and flavorful. Drinks were great too. Highly recommend checking this place out.
google avatar

Holly S.

Yelp
This place is great but isn't very big and gets really busy so if you can, I recommend going on a week day. Service: Great! Drinks: - They made the best iced chai latte I've ever had. I subbed milk for oat milk and they somehow whipped it into soft, thick, frothy perfection. Food: - Breakfast smash: this was an incredibly delicious sandwich - creme brûlée French toast: pretty good and satisfied my sweet tooth but nothing amazing. Some pieces were a bit burnt.
google avatar

Chelsea C.

Yelp
Trendy and airy breakfast/brunch cafe 5 minutes from MGM. Highly recommend a reservation, as it got quite busy on Sunday morning at 1130. Tasty and unique cocktails & entrees. Wish they had a few more GF options but still delectable for all. The lattes were my favorite!
google avatar

Lauren A.

Yelp
Great food and atmosphere! The service was really good with friendly welcoming staff.
google avatar

PJ S.

Yelp
We had a great weekday breakfast here! Ambiance is super bright and airy and service is really friendly. Ricotta pancakes were AMAZING and BLT was also very good. Mushroom omelette was okay - probably wouldn't order that again. Overall a fantastic choice and highly recommend!
google avatar

Yana G.

Yelp
Got the Breakfast Smash sandwich! I started to crave some type of breakfast sandwich with bacon and hash browns. I feel like I usually have to make a ton of add ons and requests with ingredients. The breakfast smash had everything I was craving. I ordered it as is. The potatoes were seasoned, the bacon was ample it wasn't a dense sandwich!
google avatar

Jody E.

Yelp
Quaint brunch place near the DIA! I personally think this restaurant has slightly above average brunch staples but isn't my go-to brunch place in downtown Detroit. Some of their standouts, in my opinion, are the drinks--they offer boozy brunch cocktails and an impressive amount of classic and non classic syrups for flavored lattes, also the truffle fries are a great shareable option for the table if your friends are anything like mine :) The truffle flavor isn't too overpowering and they're perfectly crisp. During my last visit I ordered the harvest salad which was just ok and I split the lemon ricotta pancakes with a friend. These were surprisingly dense and not fluffy at all. They also lacked a strong ricotta or lemon flavor despite being doused in lemon zest.
google avatar

Christopher F.

Yelp
This place is a vibe. I hit this place up before taking an out of town friend to the DIA. Great coffee and light breakfast. Service was laid back and was well informed about menu options for my celiac companion.
google avatar

Natalie Z.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped here for brunch before going to the DIA and we will be back! Great service and very tasty food and drinks. I didn't even take a picture of the Breakfast Smash but it was a great sandwich. Super soft and fresh bread paired with bacon and garlic aioli...what more could you need?! Friendly server as well.
google avatar

Lordanthony G.

Yelp
The restaurant's ambiance exudes sophistication with warm lighting and contemporary decor. The food tantalizes the taste buds with exquisite flavors, while the attentive service elevates the dining experience to perfection! Highly recommend you try it out!
google avatar

Yelp
Just left the restaurant. Left before we were even seated. Hostess was very rude. Will not return.
google avatar

Yelp
Our group went here after visiting the Detroit Historical Museum. It's just a short walk across the street. Server was Cadon who was very careful about my food allergies. He suggested the Freda bowl as safest for me and was delicious. Our drinks were kept full, plenty of water, and everyone seemed to enjoy their food. Each employee was polite and helpful. highly recommend.

Yelp
Stopped into Babo after a shopping day and I was so impressed with the ambiance and the menu of this restaurant! The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and is perfectly laid out/decorated. I got a Vanilla Cafe Latte (best coffee I've ever had, I tell everyone about this) and the chicken and waffles. My meal was amazing and I can't say enough great things about Babo! The service was great. I would recommend this place to anyone especially if you're looking for a brunch spot before stopping in the DÍA, no complaints from me!
google avatar

Autumn M.

Yelp
Be right back, adding Babo to my list of brunch staples in Detroit! Though we've drove by this place a million time we only just now *finally* stopped in for some brunch. And man, am I disappointed we didn't come sooner. The menu features a selection of brunch staples + lunchy handhelds and salads. We split the difference and went for the French toast and burger. Both were absolutely fabulous (and the mimosa wasn't bad either, of course!) The restaurant is a bit small in terms of seating so I definitely recommend making a reservation in advance, especially for the weekend. The interior has a trendy atmosphere and there's a small bar to sit at as well. Service was quick once seated. A perfect place to stop if you have afternoon plans at the library, DIA, or one of the other museums in midtown. Be sure to download the parking app or bring money/card for the parking meters.

Yelp
The food is amazing! Great service! Cute little brunch spot! I would recommend making a reservation before you go, because there's a lot of people enjoying this place! Thank you
