Back Home Bakery.
I was riding around Brooklyn with a friend and he's a regular of the place. He was feeling hungry so we made a quick detour to pick up a few pastries. It's a nice size Caribbean bakery with the owners hailing from Trinidad if I remember correctly. Grab & Go kina place, two huge display glasses acting as counters. No place to really sit and eat. They sell your typical cakes and beef patties, but judging from my friends order and the other patrons the draw are the traditional Trinidadian baked items.
I pretty much duplicated my friend's order being that he's the familiar. We picked up some Currant Rolls and Coconut Rolls. So Currants are what Trini's call raisins my friend explained to me as we walked out with our orders, and Coconuts are what we call Caribbeans straight off the boat... (Lol, Nah he ain't say that. I made that coconut part up)
The rolls are baked dough with either raisins or coconuts stuff rolled and baked into 'em. Both rolls were kina dry and flaky on the outside which was a good thing, cuz it balanced out the semi moistness on the inside of the roll.
I really enjoyed both, but I I prefer the Currant Roll just a little bit more cause I'm a cinnamon and raisins kina dude. The Coconut Roll is nothing to sleep on though, the inside has a great coconut flavor that is not too overpowering. We dropped in late in the evening and the pastries still tasted fresh, so I can only imagine if your lucky enough to get there when they first bring 'em out.
I'll definitely drop in to pick up some rolls in the future when I'm in the neighborhood.
