14 New Delivery-Only Restaurants Born Out Of The Pandemic

"If there were an award show for at-home bread bakers, we’d hope the owners of Back Alley would present a golden loaf to the winner wearing Valentino gowns on Zoom. This delivery-only bakery was started by two chefs who worked at spots like Blue Hill at Stone Barns and The Grill (respectively) before the pandemic hit. Now, they’re focused on baking excellent bread, honey buns, brown butter cookies, and beignet-like doughnuts, which are all available for delivery across most of Brooklyn, Thursday through Sunday." - nikko duren

Our Favorite Dishes Of 2020

"Angel Donuts December 1st “I’d heard of angels taking human form. But I’d never heard of an angel taking the form of thick, flakey, beignet-like dough ball covered in honey and powdered sugar. That is, until I tried Back Alley Bread. Each angel donut from this delivery-only bakery came topped with a small yellow flower, and upon ingesting one whole, I felt a sense of calm - like a blissful cherub had just released a little extra dopamine and opioids into my body. These sympathetic donuts made it so much easier to survive 2020.” -Nikko Duren, Editorial Assistant" - hannah albertine, nikko duren, hillary reinsberg, arden shore, matt tervooren

The Best Caribbean Food In Brooklyn’s Little Caribbean, Part 2 - New York - The Infatuation

"An authentic Little Caribbean bakery, Back Home offers a healthy twist on currants rolls made with whole wheat. You will be welcomed by the scent of homemade bread, also a staple in Caribbean households. Try any of their selections, especially black cake, a rum-soaked cake made with mixed peel and typically served during Christmas and at weddings." - Shelley Worrell 31

The beef pies at Back Home Bakery are pure comfort in every bite. The crust is golden, flaky, and perfectly buttery, while the filling is generously packed with well-seasoned, savory beef that’s bursting with flavor. Each bite delivers that perfect balance of tender meat and a hint of spice, wrapped in a pastry that melts in your mouth. Whether you enjoy them fresh out of the oven or warmed up later, these beef pies hit the spot every time. They’re the kind of treat that makes you feel like you’re back home, no matter where you are.

Yea… not the same bakery years ago. The patties are horrendous. Dry and tough. The bread used to be great but I’m not sure now. The callalo was way better that my husband had.

Google
The cheese roll was great, but the jerk chicken patty was tough and dry. Still a nice place with friendly staff and a lot of options.

I have no words to express my disappointment. Went in for coconut turnovers and this is what I got. Smh

Google
Guyanese, Caribbean bakery for all nationalities. The most delicious smell on earth from these tasty treats and home made baked bread. Here you will get pones, fudge, sponge cakes and all sort of delicious pineapple cakes, passion friut cakes black and rum cakes and even channa. So yummy. I just bought my whole wheat baked, hot out of the oven bread. And I think the prices are reasonable. With no long lines today ( well when i there). Ask for Omar. Nice guy. He is standing behind one of the counters. 5 Stars for a wonderful service and great treats.🙏🙏🙏🙏

Google
I’m kind of disappointed about my food that I order I went there two day in a row the first day I bought 2 oxtail patties and 2 salmon patties I was so excited to experience the patties but when I got down to the middle of my oxtail patty there was a piece of silver Brillo the you used to clean dishes in it I did enjoy the flavor and the freshness of the patties but it turned me off and I had to give the rest away the second day I returned I didn’t tell anyone about it because I was waiting almost 20 minute to place my order when I finally got a chance to order it slipped my mind until I got in my car and started to eat the chicken patty with coco bread which reminded me that I waste my time and money because the patty was dried out and hard I guess it was from the day before I want to go back to try the food again because I know the food is good but it’s just that I don’t want to waste my time and money on food that I can’t enjoy

Stopped in, super hungry from running errands and got the callaloo patty. First impression of the store: nice, clean layout and bright atmosphere. But the front staff seemed surprised to see a customer (?). The reception was a bit cold, confused. As for the patty: I didn’t care for it. I found the crust unnecessarily greasy and the filling was ok, just not seasoned very well. I know that’s a matter of preference, but I couldn’t finish it.

Google
Great atmosphere, even better service and I love their variety. It's my first time here and I'll definitely be back!!

Yelp
I come to this bakery every time I visit Brooklyn from Connecticut and I often bring back goodies for my mom in Connecticut. I was soooo disappointed yesterday and I will never go back. The banana bread bland, the guava cake dry...and the rock hard cocktail patties that they gave me!!!! So disrespectful to give a paying customer an item that you know is burnt, dry and stale. They are not edible at all and because I bought a few things, I didn't not even realize until later on in the day. Just awful!!!!

Chantel S.

Yelp
The patties were dry, hard and tasteless. The cheese roll was dry, tasted old... also they gave the wrong order too, so yeah I don't really recommend

Yelp
The bake goods are not bad, but the service from the two women who is serving is extremely distasteful. They lack customer service ethics. You enter and say hello and they don't respond. You wait in line to be served, and they service the person behind you instead. This establishment is not ready, they act as if they are back home baking and serving the few friends that patronize the shop. They are not community or culturally diverse. So sad. If I could give them a "negative star", that is what they deserved.

Yelp
I tried so hard to like this place but the people (Every. Last. One of them) behind the counter are always so rude, like they could care less I'm even standing in their establishment. Doesn't hurt me either way cuz everything I've ever had from here is not good anyway. The cakes look good but haven't tasted them. Beef patties are horrible. Cheese rolls, currant rolls, bread, nothing tastes good so no longer returning.

Yelp
The people behind counter are way to rude at this bakery. Imagine deciding to buy something extra since you have more change, and being given attitude because u chose to spend more money. It's a shame! Currant roll stale! Didn't even get all the goods I purchased. Cake missing out of bag. I used to go here almost daily a few years ago, but this place has just gone down. Left such a distaste. Will never return. Allan's and Conrad's best then back by far now.

Yelp
Back Home Bakery. I was riding around Brooklyn with a friend and he's a regular of the place. He was feeling hungry so we made a quick detour to pick up a few pastries. It's a nice size Caribbean bakery with the owners hailing from Trinidad if I remember correctly. Grab & Go kina place, two huge display glasses acting as counters. No place to really sit and eat. They sell your typical cakes and beef patties, but judging from my friends order and the other patrons the draw are the traditional Trinidadian baked items. I pretty much duplicated my friend's order being that he's the familiar. We picked up some Currant Rolls and Coconut Rolls. So Currants are what Trini's call raisins my friend explained to me as we walked out with our orders, and Coconuts are what we call Caribbeans straight off the boat... (Lol, Nah he ain't say that. I made that coconut part up) The rolls are baked dough with either raisins or coconuts stuff rolled and baked into 'em. Both rolls were kina dry and flaky on the outside which was a good thing, cuz it balanced out the semi moistness on the inside of the roll. I really enjoyed both, but I I prefer the Currant Roll just a little bit more cause I'm a cinnamon and raisins kina dude. The Coconut Roll is nothing to sleep on though, the inside has a great coconut flavor that is not too overpowering. We dropped in late in the evening and the pastries still tasted fresh, so I can only imagine if your lucky enough to get there when they first bring 'em out. I'll definitely drop in to pick up some rolls in the future when I'm in the neighborhood. Back Home Bakery, Good Stuff.

Yelp
I've bought bread here before and it is the best bread ever! Also the coconut drop/dream is a very delicious bread sort of like a scone and they are only 50 cents. The chestnut bread is good as well. I have had no problems with the person working the counter she was polite.

Yelp
I love this place. By just the smell of the baked goods alone, you're tempted to buy everything your couple dollars can handle. When I go, I always buy pine tarts, salara (coconut + pastry), and current rolls. When every restaurant and bakery finds every excuse to raise prices, I find this bakery is a great find for cheap eats. They've been on that corner for as long as I can remember. Definitely a gem of the neighborhood.

Yelp
Hours: M-Sat 8:30am - 9:30 pm, Sun 9-6pm Very nice bakery, looks brand-new, with neat counter tops and glass displays. Staffed by an Indian lady who didn't offer a smile, just "Who's next?" I'm on a quest to find a good beef patty. Their cocktail patties are hockey-puck-sized and $1 each. They also have larger patties that are the usual rectangular shape. The lady gave me attitude about exchanging the large for the small. I bought 2 chicken and 2 beef. Both used ground meat and similar spicy seasonings. The pastry was brushed with shiny egg wash; it was tumeric yellow, flaky, rich, and fragrant. They have a hockey-puck-sized Chinese "cake" that I'd like to try next time. They also offer jerk chicken, ice cream, and various desserts.

Yelp
Flatbush is home to a million different Caribbean restaurants so competition is thick. I usually visit Back Home Bakery when visiting my hairdresser that's closeby. Honestly, I usually only get their patties or baked goods, but my understanding is that they actually serve up cooked food. I've been content with everything so far, but not overwhelmed. This place works.

Yelp
I come here for the Salt fish and Bake. It's very good and reasonably priced at $2.25. The staff was friendly. If I'm in the area I will continue to stop in.

Yelp
Love the fresh baked breads in the morning. Friendly staff, wonderful aroma inside, smells like a "real bakery"

Yelp
I think I moved into my current apartment because the smells from the bakery! Walking with my realtor to look at apartment, I smelled wonderful goodness before I saw the bakery itself. Sure she showed me many apartments, but all I could remember was the smell. Fast forward to three weeks later and I have been there half a dozen times and have purchased, devoured, and enjoyed items from my Guyanese back ground like cheese rolls, cocktail beef patties, coconut buns, bake and salt fish, pineapple tarts, tennis rolls. It truly tastes like back home!

Yelp
Love the beef pies, n other pastries at this bakery. they are always usually pretty polite and offer to help you and give you suggestions if you ask for it. The beef pie though is extremely succulent and delicious the crust is not too flaky and just perfect. And the price point is great as well.

Dee F.

Yelp
The people have bad attitude (not friendly). On a good day the bread is okay; then you are lucky if they are not stale
