Hawaiian eatery with fried chicken, BBQ pork, and live music
"Nietzsche believed that there was no objective meaning or structure in the world, except for what we give it. And if that’s true, then we’re pushing all of our “things that matter” chips to the center and going all-in on Back Home In Lahaina. Takeout from this Hawaiian restaurant is basically the closest thing to a vacation you can get these days, with tremendous dishes like poke on fried wonton chips, coconut-filled haupia cheesecake, and, our favorite, the loco moco - two scoops of rice, a fried egg, and a hamburger patty, all smothered in gravy. Back Home In Lahaina is available for takeout and delivery, call (310) 835-4014, or find them on most major delivery platforms." - kat hong
"Back Home In Lahaina wins the award for the best fully immersive Hawaiian experience. Between the giant murals of humpback whales splashing in the ocean, facade storefronts with names like “Aulani’s Gift Kart,” and their incredible menu of local food, it doesn’t take much (or many glasses of their Kona Brewing Company beers), to forget that you’re not vacationing in Maui. Staples like poke on wonton chips and haupia cheesecake are great here, but their loco moco (a beautiful behemoth that includes two scoops of white rice, a hamburger patty, and a fried egg, all smothered in brown gravy) is one of the best in town." - kat hong
"Many of the hangover cures on this guide are going to include some sort of rice/protein/sauce combo, but to be honest, they all pale in comparison to the loco moco. Originally from Hawaii, this giant plate of white rice, hamburger patties, over-easy eggs, and thick brown gravy basically wrote the entire book on next-day recovery. There are a few places in LA that serve this GOAT meal, but one of our favorites is at Back Home in Lahaina. Located in Carson, this is also a great place for Hawaiian staples like poke on wonton chips and haupia (coconut cream custard) cheesecake." - kat hong, brant cox, sylvio martins, garrett snyder
"Los Angeles shines brightest when its establishments embrace a kitschy theme (Atwater Village’s Tam O’Shanter and the Baked Potato jazz club immediately spring to mind), and Back Home in Lahaina aces this litmus test with an island flair: the dining room at this Carson restaurant looks like a recreated Maui streetfront, complete with floor-to-ceiling wooden facades and dolphin murals featuring sea creatures smiling next to lava rocks. The saimin is a must-order, a steaming bowl of soft wheat egg noodles served in a clear dashi broth, garnished with diced green onions and bright-red barbecue pork." - Kat Hong

"During a visit to Carson, I spent a few hours at Back Home in Lahaina; the casual Hawaiian restaurant has been a gathering point for people with connections to Maui for years, and now the busy spot has become a place to eat, remember, and mourn the recent fires." - Farley Elliott
