Where to Drink Iced Coffee in Chicago | Eater Chicago

"A peachy, precious retreat in Lakeview, Bae Coffee embraces an aesthetic that some might call “peak millennial” — read: decorative disco balls and innumerable shades of pink — but treats coffee with the utmost seriousness. Take its deep, rich Kyoto-style iced coffee for a buzzy test drive, or hit the throttle full-on with powerful cold brew." - Naomi Waxman

A Very Millennial Coffee Roaster Plans to Open a Cafe in Lakeview - Eater Chicago

"Bae Coffee Company, founded by Alicia Zyburt and Devon Owens, is set to open in the former Pastoral space in Lakeview. The cafe will feature a 'millennial pink' aesthetic and serve a variety of specialty coffee drinks, pastries, and eventually food specials. The couple started Bae Coffee during the pandemic and have been roasting beans in small batches at Brewpoint Coffee in Elmhurst. They plan to open the cafe in late fall 2021 or early 2022." - aimee.levitt

Google
This place has such a personal touch. I love all of their seasonal drinks like this summer Okinawa blueberry latte, and also love their classic coffee offerings. They sell flowers right now too, I got this handmade bouquet for a friend and the entire presentation felt special and beautiful. We love it!

Google
This place is so cute, reasonable pricing, latte was delicious. But how are you going to serve caffeinated drinks and not allow customers to use the toilet? 😅 I’m actually not even sure that’s legal in IL- as far as I know, businesses are obligated to let customers use it for medical reasons, and they can’t ask why. So minus one star there. Great place but keep in mind you may be doing the fun run to Mariano’s, so not the best for elderly, kids, or anyone with a medical issue.

Google
I purchased a caramel flavoured Machiatto from here. First time, loved the coffee and at atmosphere! The shop is setup really nicely on Broadway. Great location and coffee!

Emma Jacobsen

Google
This place is so cute, and run by the most adorable couple. But this review is purely for the wildflower latte: run don’t walk to try this spectacular drink. It has little flowers on it too!! Such a precious place.

Google
Bae is our favorite coffee shop in Chicago! I’m not a huge coffee girl, so I love to see so many tea & tea latte options on the menu! The disco tea was amazing I highly recommend. My husband loves coffee and says that Bae serves the best of the best! The pastries are delicious as well, staff is incredibly friendly and kind, and the aesthetic is beautiful to take pictures and relax in the city. 💕✨

Google
One of my favorite coffee shops in the city and definitely my favorite on the north side. Bae always gets every drink right and it's clear that they are true coffee lovers. The space is also adorable with a lovely pink theme, fresh flowers, and even fresher beats. It always makes you want to stick around even after you've finished your drink. I highly recommend the espresso tonic as it gives fancy downtown bar without the price tag. It's my go to drink. The seasonal options are always a treat too. Hit this place up, you won't be disappointed.

Google
Awesome local owned business, owned and operated by a sweet duo. Friendly customer service, helpful recommendations (I got the peppermint mocha), and great atmosphere. It’s pink and fun, loud enough that you can’t hear other conversations in the shop, and a great menu with a variety of drinks and food! Would make a super cute date spot!

Google
I’m a frequent traveler to Chicago and coffee at Bae is always the highlight of my trip. Devon the owner is a (former?) chef and a coffee guru. You can feel it in everything you order. Go for the house-roasted coffee; stay for the baguette with house-made seasonal compote and honey butter. Wednesdays suck because that’s when they’re closed.

Yelp
An intimate coffee spot on Broadway. The menu is quite small and the focus seems to be on blending coffee and tea. We ordered an iced Chaider, which felt a little expensive at $7 for 12oz. The interior itself is very cute. I loved the tin ceiling and there were only a few two seat tables and one four seat table. They also had a little sales section focused on Valentine's Day. The staff were very friendly and the Chaider itself was very good. Sweet and fruity, the apple really came through. Seems like a great place to read a book and I'll probably come back in the summer.

Yelp
This is the CUTEST all pink coffee shop in Chicago! I just discovered Bae Coffee and I am OBSESSED! We came to check it out this past weekend and everything from the decor to the deliciously creative lattes and friendly staff was top tier. Our favorite drink was the pink cadillac- their house mocha with whipped creamer and freeze dried strawberries - soooo good!
google avatar

Karen C.

Yelp
I love coming here for a work from home day or in a girly mood!! The interior is so cute. Everything is pink with disco balls and neon signs as decorations. I've tried the chai latte and vanilla latte. Their drinks are always great! Service is friendly and quick too! It's a bit of a smaller cafe so seating can be limited.
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
Fantastic service and beautiful interior! It's a bit small inside with limited seating but there's additional seating outdoors. Prices are comparable with other coffee shops in the area. I liked my latte, it was fresh and the flavors were nice. I'd rate it 3.5/5.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
This is a great neighborhood coffee spot. The drinks are unique and flavorful and the bakery items are delicious. I love their seasonal menus. Obviously, I can't leave a review without mentioning how gorgeous the interior of the shop is. The decor is pink! It feels so friendly and fun - and it is! I have met the owner a few times and he is very kind. The same goes for any employee I have encountered while visiting there. Overall, stop in for a coffee and a treat and you'll see for yourself how great Bae Coffee is!
google avatar

Kate W.

Yelp
Bae Coffee is the instagrammable cafe that I've been looking for! Everything is pink from top to bottom, down to a pink, disco ball covered Christmas tree in the window. Bae Coffee is teeny tiny, so it isn't a great place to camp out and work, but it was great for quickly catching up with a friend. We ordered a dirty chai, a maple latte, an almond croissant, and a ham and cheese croissant - all amazing! Pricing is a little high for my taste, but on par with other cafes in the area. Service was great. The owner was very welcoming and super funny. He did a great job of making us feel at home. I'll definitely be back to live out all of my Barbie-esque coffee shop dreams!
google avatar

Mark L.

Yelp
Best coffee in town! The oat milk latte with a shot of vanilla is the best! Devon makes the best coffee ever. Check it out!

Yelp
This place definitely took me by surprise. I wanted to try a new coffee shop in the area and after seeing a few good reviews decided to pick this one. I tried the blueberry Okinawa oat latte and it was crazy delicious. Not too overpowering with the blueberry and not overtly sweet. Such a well crafted drink. The inside decor is cute as well, girly and millennial pink everywhere. Would love to come back and try some of their other lattes with homemade syrups

Yelp
Stopped by bae coffee after my bridal shower and wasn't disappointed. I got a caramel latte which is usually my go to for coffee and it was just the perfect pick me up that I needed to get through the rest of the day. Definitely want to go back again!

Lisa S.

Yelp
Cute place, loved that the barista set a timer for the tea to brew but jeez, when asked to use the rest room, that the city of Chicago and State of Illinois require them to have, you get a "don't have one". How the heck do you serve liquids and invite people to sit at your tables and not be able to make your customers are comfortable? The man who runs it doesn't seem to care at all what happens after he creates and serves. To me, that terse "don't have one" says a lot about the (lack of) care. So, the law requires any place with a combination of ten (seating for X and X number of employees) to at least allow a customer to access the employees' bathroom- maybe that bathroom was not in a shape to be shared that day? which, of course, is kinda alarming, when food is involved.
google avatar

Shirley L.

Yelp
The aesthetics are so pretty with a pink theme in the interior. A great small space to hang out and chat or grab coffee to go. They do have a rule that restricts laptops and tablets on the weekends. I got the rose vanilla latte and it had a really strong rose flavor to it which I really like. I would recommend coming by and checking it out if you're in the area!
google avatar

Madge W.

Yelp
Great coffee and a lot of RULES. No bathroom, no tablets, no seating before you order. It's weird. Too much coffee perhaps?
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Came in this cute boutique cafe for an afternoon pick me up and left with an absolute divine latte! If you have seen this shop before, then you know they have a fun aesthetic with many shades of pink, velvety seating, and neon lights. I tried their iced wildflower tea latte, and it was phenomenal. Not only was the flavor delicious, but the detailing was beautiful. The latte was topped with glittery flower petals. My only complaint? Their hours are not great. "7ish" opening on weekdays and "8ish" opening on weekends. As an early riser, it's hard to find a good time to visit. Otherwise, I'll plan on coming back!
google avatar

Christina A.

Yelp
Bae was really cute inside but the service was rushed and somewhat unfriendly. I had an iced coffee, which was tasty but quite pricey. They don't have any artificial sweeteners. The shop is really girly and pink with a handful of tables. It may not be the best place to try to work because of the small size.
google avatar

Peter S.

Yelp
We became regulars here :) so much so that the waiter remembers our order haha. The shakeratos here are great, has a very strong coffee flavor and the mixture of the milk and syrup pair very well. We also really like the vibe here because of the lighting and picturesque atmosphere. Would highly recommend ^^ Note - we tried the baguette with butter and jam, it is surprisingly delicious considering the bread is hot and toasty and the food with condiments mix very well together!
google avatar

Aleah H.

Yelp
I adored my wildflower tea latte with almond milk from bae coffee!! I usually don't enjoy hot drinks, but the latte was perfectly warm and didn't burn my tongue! The almond milk also didn't compromise the latte at all, and was perfectly foamy! It was the perfect floral treat on a rainy day!

Yelp
Really enjoyed this place. There has always been a great number of excellent cafes and coffee shops in the Lakeview neighborhood. Some stay, while others don't. It's good to see that even in these uncertain COVID times people choose to make a go of it and new places open. I've been around a while. Strolling down Broadway the other day this place jumped out at me. Super colorful, inviting and warm especially on a cold, snowy winter day. Bae is a husband and wife venture born from the pandemic. There are some great things that came out of this past few difficult years and the folks at Bae remind us of that. Bae is a cut above and what I consider a Coffee House as opposed to shop. A house being a place much like a public house that excels at what they offer and you meet your neighbors to chat and say hello. A true neighborhood place. The kind of place my ma who lived for decades just around the corner would have called her home. I was fortunate to meet one of the owners when I stopped in. He explained their story and how the coffee he makes is special. It was special. truly a great cup for coffee made slow drip to order. Now i'm no expert on how to make it but I know a bit about drinking it and what is a great cup of coffee and Bae hit the mark . I haven't yet tried their food offerings but plan that this next day or two. But it all starts with some great coffee. Their choice of cup they use for their coffee is exceptional. It is quality and class. Thickly made making it easy to hold a very hot cup of coffee, it can't be cheap and makes the coffee that much more worth it. You can go to big chain coffee shops, which I do at times, and get much less quality for a far greater price. I loved that he inquired about our vaccination cards. that means, unlike too many, they actually care about themselves and others walking through their doors. The decor is classic and bright. Like I said, inviting. I like that they left the old school building ceiling in tact. It gives it a neighborhood feel. though not a huge place I can see some great meet and greets happening here in my near future and hope they can get themselves a small sidewalk cafe when the weather permits. I definitely know that i will be back at Bae and hope the neighborhood folks do now and will continue to support a true welcoming neighborhood spot.

Yelp
Dropped by here after the gluten free diner told me it was closed to dining in, and I'm so glad I checked it out! This place was cute and pink and for anyone into that. (It's me. I'm anyone.) It was clearly well liked by locals. But above all, holy cow the folks in charge know about coffee and food! The coffee beans are *incredibly* roasted, and done by the owners themselves. I ended up buying a bag of their single origin coffee beans to take them where I live in Seattle. The owner was so kind and passionate about food that it was an absolute pleasure to get to chat with him for a few hours.

Yelp
I have thought long and hard about this review. I think that Bae Coffee stop is right in the middle of a four star and three start review. If half or three quarter stars in a review where possible, this review would employ them. You should also realize that I visited here on their opening weekend, so that could have impacted some aspects of my visit and experience. First the positives. I am always happy when a new independent coffee shop opens, especially in this area. I used to live near here for several years, and it is surprising that there are not many independent coffee opens in their immediate area. Bae Coffee is a Breath of fresh air. Second, their coffee is good, but not better than the next independent coffee shop. I ordered a hot oat milk latte. I enjoy it. The coffee had a good taste and the oak milk made for a creamy latte. Now for the negatives. First, It's expensive, even on the scale of an independent coffee shop. For my 12 oz hot oat milk latte I paid around $6.60. Compare that with a 16 oz hot oat milk latte I got at Hexe Coffee a few weeks later for about $5.50. I got more of the same quality latte at over a dollar less at Hexe. Second, the interior needs a small bit of work. The Pink color aside (not my favorite color, but not a deal breaker), the interior is nice, but lacks a bit of something to make it sing. To be fair, I went on opening weekend, and all new businesses, including this one, need time to refine their presentation. Overall, this a good coffee shop worth supporting and buying coffee from. If you are in the area, it's a good option, it's not worth traveling here if there is a independent coffee shop with better value in your area.

Yelp
When I say, I would come here everyday if I lived walking distance, I mean it. But I'm still here a few times a week. First, the coffee is phenomenal. My favorite is the pink Cadillac mocha, or if I don't want espresso, the London fog latte (with lavender syrup) . They have some food - pastries and waffles, which are also good! Whether you're in town for a trip, or you live here, this is a must go if you're a coffee lover!

Paige H.

Yelp
I had an unfortunate experience today! Coffee was good, and the blonde employee was kind, but the rules of this coffee shop and demeanor of another employee made it difficult to enjoy my time. You aren't allowed to have your laptop out in the shop? With me working remote, I was hoping to have this be a new spot for me. You also can't bring in outside food or drink, which is a totally understandable rule, however it was communicated to me in a short tone which made me feel unwelcome. All in all, I came in when it was busy, so maybe this place is awesome when it's a little slower. Not for me.
google avatar

Diane H.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop since moving to the neighborhood. I have my usual but I love the seasonal drinks they offer every few months. The owners are wonderful! Great vibe and love the color palette in this coffee shop. They don't allow laptops on the weekends and it can be challenging to get a seat so I'd recommend stopping by shortly after they open or just grab and go. Also, the chairs are cool but be cautious when leaning forward. They also have some pastry items AND waffles (drinking/eating at the shop) that I'm going to eventually try. Highly recommended!

Olivia P.

Yelp
I never leave reviews but felt compelled to share my two extremely negative experiences with Bae Coffee. I stopped by Bae Coffee and sat to take a work call. While I was on the phone, the owner, Devon, angrily approached me said I can't sit if I didn't buy something. Flustered and taken aback because I had been sitting for about a minute or so and in the middle of a call, I quickly apologized and told him I would order something in a minute. When off the call I went to the counter to apologize and oder something. The owner looked at me and completely ignored me and went into the back room. After waiting for a few minutes he came back and was extremely upset, yelling and using profanity towards me while other customers were in the shop. It resulted in him telling me to leave and he refused to service me. I was in the wrong for not ordering something at the start but the way the owner handled the situation when I try to rectify my mistake was completely uncalled for. Separately, my significant other was taking out our trash with our dog accompanying him. We live very close to Bae Coffee and our trash bins are right next to each other. The owner, Devon, was also taking out his trash at the same time. Our dog was leashed and waiting for my significant other to throw away the trash and our dog was apparently too close to something the owner, Devon wanted to throw away because Devon shoved our dog out of the way to pick up the item our dog was standing by. There are so many other cute, local coffee shops on Broadway, I would highly recommend supporting a different establishment. Picture of our dog for reference.

Yelp
Stopped by here for a lovely coffee this morning. Not gonna lie, I was a bit skeptical of a place called bae coffee but the interior was cute, the barista was very nice, and my latte was delicious. The menu is simple and pricing is pretty standard for Chicago. People were there with their laptops working as it was a weekday morning. The interior is small but I sat and enjoyed my drink for a bit before leaving. Love this area! Would return.
google avatar

Romana Y.

Yelp
A new cafe in the area that carries Publican goods. Walked into the the modest cafe to pick up a few items and was warmly greeted. Flat White- 3.5 (a bit bitter for my liking) Lattes- 4 Publican Choc chip cookie- 4 Publican Ham and Cheese croissant- 5 Small tables throughout; no wifi; ambiance encourages one to sit, sip, eat, and leave. I like it and will return; I hope the lattes/flat whites taste smoother next time.

Thomas K.

Yelp
The best mocha I've ever had anywhere on this planet. Really nice staff and a great local small business!

Yelp
LITERALLY, my new favorite coffee shop in all of Chicago!! -The design. ALL PINK. I'm seriously obsessed!! Not only is it pink... but it's adorned with streamers, disco balls, and neon signs. The most perfect and aesthetically pleasing design concept ever!! -The treats and drinks. They have a small (but dangerously tasty) selection of treats to choose from. Everything is totally Instagram worthy, and totally yummy!!! -The staff... aka: the owner!! :) FLIPPING HYSTERICAL. This is a husband and wife team, and the husband literally made my visit. He was helpful with everything, showed great hospitality, and again... was flipping hysterical. SO FUNNY. Honestly, it's because of his customer service that I'll 100% be back!! This place has only been open for a little over 3 months... so, you better get there soon before it becomes too popular!! Hehehe!! It's definitely a new gem to the Chicago area!!

Yelp
Cute little neighborhood coffee shop in Lakeview. It is very small (basically just a hallway) so don't plan on sitting there on a busy day. They don't make their own pastries, but they are curated from a local bakery. Very Instagram-able and they even gave me a puppichino!
google avatar

Anna G.

Yelp
Holy crap, y'all! In addition to being hands down adorable with the nicest staff in the world, the lattes are fun and delicious, and the pastry selection features some of the best people in the city. Stopped in after pride fest up the street and decided to get all rosy with a mini rose babka from Masa Madre and an iced rose tea latte to match. The babka was warmed up for us and the barista thoughtfully brought a couple of glasses of water with curls of orange peel to the table. So nice to see that it's not just an Instagramable spot, but a really great coffee shop first and foremost. Will definitely be back!!!

Kenzie L.

Yelp
Coffee and food are good, the people are friendly. Not sure if they're renovating or something, but the space got smaller than I remember. They don't even have a bathroom for the customers, which I find pretty wild as a coffee shop.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Really cute coffee concept! The barista is an enthusiastic guide if you need help pmakimg a selection. I tried a dirty chai latte with oat milk. It was easy on the eyes and delicious. The cinnamon rolls are humongous! They do offer seasonal LTO special drinks too.

Mary P.

Yelp
This coffee shop is a neighborhood gem! The owners are so warm and caring about the community, and also about providing quality coffee to Lakeview East residents. I love stopping in for an excellent cup of coffee and a heartwarming chat with Devin and Alicia when they're behind the counter. You can see that their love story has been carried throughout their business and that they enjoy sharing it with the community. I also love that they give back by providing local artisans a venue for their holiday markets. This is a great place to shop local.
google avatar

Paige D.

Yelp
Really cute spot for the girlies in your life! Didn't have their food but pastries looked great. Service was fairly quick and drinks were good. Got a cold brew and iced latte and thought both were good but iced latte was better. Would go back for takeout or to sit in but there are limited spots so you may have to takeout.
google avatar

Laura B.

Yelp
Love this coffee shop. Stopped in every morning on a visit to Chicago. The coffee is delicious, and service was quick and friendly. Thanks, Devon!
google avatar

Lilyanna C.

Yelp
Service was great and the shop is super cute. I love checking out local coffee shops when traveling and this one did not disappoint! I got the maple latte as per the suggestion of the barista (with oat milk) and it was so good. And a smaller detail that I appreciate are the pink to go cups. It just adds a nice touch.
google avatar

Anna H.

Yelp
The cutest, most amazing coffee shop in Lakeview. Such kind baristas and amazing service as well as delicious coffee! Would highly recommend to anyone in the area!
google avatar

Daisy K.

Yelp
Best coffee in Lakeview! The service is always superb and friendly!
google avatar

Alanna Q.

Yelp
Very cool aesthetic but I'd say the coffee is average. Definitely a great place for a girl date or and Instagram though!
google avatar

Holly G.

Yelp
This is the place we all dream of owning. Great coffee, sweet hubby/wife story, creative vibe and perfect LP's on the turntable. It's nice to get 100%.

Sandie B.

Yelp
Really cute place and friendly service. My latte was prett good, but didn't have the richness in flavor that I prefer. The pastries looked good and creative so would return to try a mini babka. I also really like that they encourage people to put away their devices and talk to each other.
google avatar

Jacy A.

Yelp
If "my coffee shop is cuter than yours" were a coffee shop....this is it. Cute name - Adorable decor - Instagram photo op - Great service - Good hours - Despite there being a coffee shop on every other corner, this little place is its own vibe. It can take some doing to post up in the little window seating but the view of the street for some good people watching is worth it. If you get to sit on the soft dusky rose couch ensconced in the rose awning in the back for some coffee and contemplation, even better, depending on your mood. The first time I went in, only the couch was available. The couple in front of me ordered to go. While I was ordering my items to stay, they doubled back and sat on the couch. The owner immediately stepped in and asked them to "Slide Over" so I could eat and drink. I loved that I didn't have "fend for myself". That one moment made me a loyal customer. See you guys soon!
google avatar

Mj S.

Yelp
It's just ehhhh, definitely not worth $6+ for reg coffee. It's basic coffee, like Starbucks. Nothing to write home about.
google avatar

Reah A.

Yelp
The cutest coffee shop!! I stopped in for their Valentines Day specials and was super impressed. The service was amazing, and there's SO many photo ops within the cafe. The vibes are immaculate, and it was a great place to sip on my morning coffee. I tried the Cadillac pink mocha and the cherry pop tart. So delicious!

Kelsey B.

Yelp
Bae is top notch! The coffee is extremely high quality, and the couple who owns the place are always friendly and welcoming. By far my favorite Lakeview neighborhood coffee joint!!
google avatar

Sean O.

Yelp
This shop is always happening, love their seasonal specials, and my go-to Americano. Their food offerings are also pretty rad. Many people seem to think the owner who works behind the counter is rude based on other reviews, but I've never felt that. People need to remember it's one person doing everything most days, and when it's not, it's two. Both are owners, and both work really hard, so maybe stop being entitled and calm down? If you want quick, go to Starbucks, but if you want GOOD, be a bae. The pink vibes and overall ambiance makes this a chill spot for every day of the week, rain, shine, or snow. 10 out of 10 every time.
google avatar

Diamond J.

Yelp
I am so in love with this place! The pink is so cute and the barista was soo kind. I got an iced chai latte and it's one of the best I've had since moving to Chicago. I definitely wanna go back with all my friends whenever I can.
google avatar

Timothy C.

Yelp
Exceptional, from bean to final form. Truly expertly crafted. I love a cortado and this place redefined perfection for me. Though try anything with the ambrosial lavender syrup. Great service, convivial atmosphere.

Angie L.

Yelp
Decided to try this new place even though I was in the neighborhood for an Intelligentsia coffee. Super cute decor and the pastries looked delicious, though we didn't have any because we'd just eaten. The service was very friendly and our lattes were made with care. I don't think the espresso has the same smooth richness as Intelligentsia. There's a slight bitterness to it. I still enjoyed it, but I wouldn't choose it over Intelligentsia.
google avatar

Nathan K.

Yelp
This place is great. I often get a mocha at cafes I visit and have to always ask "can you make it half or less sweetened please?" But this place already makes a high cocoa content Mocha so it's dialed in perfectly for folks not looking for a sugar bomb. The owners seem like wonderful people. Always with kind words and a great attitude. Haven't ordered their pastries yet (which they get elsewhere) but they look incredible. Can't wait to come back.
