The 11 Best Bagel Spots In Montreal

"Verdun’s St-Lo is a comfortable neighborhood café where you can enjoy fresh in-house bagels in a welcoming old-school space. Breakfast with coffee and a fruit salad is served until 3pm daily, with your choice of bagels benedict (veggie, bacon, pesto, or Fisherman’s) and homemade fêves au lard. The menu has lunch combos with soup and coffee or tea available all day, including more sandwiches (the Irresistible is a classic smoked salmon and cream cheese) and salads. The restaurant was absolutely beautiful and intriguing, with a lot of elegant design elements that really showcased its heritage. The staff were extremely kind and very well-dressed, adding to the overall pleasant experience. The food was quite good; the bagel wasn’t necessarily the best I’ve ever had, but it was decent. The restroom was very clean and had an interesting design as well. One unique touch was that they had a variety of cups available, so you could pick your own design and pour your coffee yourself. It was a mix of self-service and full service, and their tipping policy started at 13%, which I found to be a nice gesture of respect towards their staff. Overall, I definitely recommend giving it a visit!

Google
What stood out the most was the service. Eva so patient and sweet on an extremely busy day. It was my friend and i’s first time, and she explained options to us, allowed us to make variations ( which we made many!) and didn’t make us feel like a bother at all. Staff kept checking in on us, filling our waters, and generally being so pleasant ! It’s hard to find good service nowadays. The atmosphere was cozy and quaint. The food was just okay, but I will be back for how welcoming the staff was! Great options for takeaway and for local products too!

Google
They are pet-friendly, even in the winter, which is nice (on the terasse)! Service is good, but since the concept is "unlimited coffee or tea," you serve your own cup of coffee, and so the servers only give you your food. They're very kind, though ! The open terrasse in the winter is nice, but I wish they had it heated already. We asked the server to heat it when we arrived, but it never really got hot, and our puppy was freezing. As for the food itself, I'd say it's pricey for the quantity and quality of what you get. The bagels are good but nothing out of the ordinary. The sandwich itself is loaded, but for the price, you'd think it comes with a side or two, but it doesn't. Plus, I wanted to substitute the tomatoes for something else, but it was an extra anyway. The server was very nice in trying to help me find something that wouldn't cost too much to substitute, like peppers or onions, but I still think it shouldn't be an extra if you're replacing a veggie with another. Overall, food is okay. Service is good. The atmosphere is fine, but it could be better.

Google
What an amazing place. I had trouble imagining Montreal bagels under expanding or for my BLT sandwich but they were exceptional. Fresh and tasty. The fruits that came with the meal was lovely fresh and definitely ripe. Busy place but everyone has a smile in a kind word.

Google
It is a very popular spot, which doesn’t surprise me because the food was delicious. I got the pesto Benedict and it was absolutely delicious. The service was excellent, the staff was super nice, and we got our food very fast after ordering. My only ick is where we were seated. The table is way too low compared to the bench that it made it a bit uncomfortable to eat.

Google
Lovely fresh bagels in the heart of Verdun. Came in with low expectations but left very happy and satisfied, will definitely be a returning customer. The service was extremely quick, we got our food within 5 minutes of ordering. We had the smoked salmon with cream cheese capers and red onion bagel, my favorite. We so had a an egg bagel with tomato cheese lettuce and mayo. Cappuccino was good as well.

Google
Service and atmosphere are great. I ordered and received my order in 5 minutes. The price does not match the quality or quantity, and any substitute or additional will shoot up the total price. Do not order the vegan bagels as they are also gluten free and are not actually bagels, more of a flat bread. A $16.95 combo came out to $32 with the addition of a latte ($5), hash brown ($1.50) and vegan bagel ($1.75). Terrace is fantastic for the summer though.

Google
Their coffee and barista are so good I cant take a coffee anywhere else anymore. The only thing better than the food and the coffee is the staff and management; Incredible team, always smiling and joyful. 10/5 stars would be more accurate.

Yelp
Great eclectic vintage decor. Cute coffee self-service station with a choice of mugs. I always like to grab a brown pottery one. Great bagels too! I wish breakfasts were served with home potatoes, but they are fulfilling none the less. Friendly service. One of my top three breakfast places in Verdun.

Yelp
I was not a fan of the food. The tomato soup was not good at all. It made me really sick. I had the turkey bagel and it was okay. The service was great.

Yelp
What a cozy and beautiful place. Went there for a quick bagel breakfast and I wasn't disappointed. So fresh and so many options to choose from. If you get a coffee they also have a wall full of mugs and you choose your own that I found pretty cool. Super quick service you order at the cash, pay and they bring it to your table.

Yelp
We were driving through Montreal after a trip to Maine and we were hungry! What should you get in Montreal, bagels of course. So, we stopped in and were surprised that this place was so interesting and cute. We ordered at the counter and sat down. Food was delivered to us. I had a soup and bagel with butter toasted, and my husband had an open-faced bagel, I believe the Italian. It was so good. I loved the soup and bagel. Warm, cozy, on a cool day. I would want to go back to try out their drinks next time. They did have some baked goods too.

Yelp
Love these bagels. They were really nice, really fresh and enjoyable. I would definitely consider going back next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
Just went there for breakfast this morning as I was in Verdun staff was super sweet and welcoming nothing wrong to say about the service. Got a Poppy seed bagel with butter and Cream cheese and a plain bagel with butter cream cheese and bacon which unfortunately the bacon was way too overcooked and crispy for my taste . Also got an home made iced tea which I got really disappointed about as it's litteraly a glass of cold water with a bag of tea in it . In general a really great place for the atmosphere but unfortunately had still some disappointment.

Yelp
Wow, just wow! Everything here was amazing. My boyfriend enjoyed the hot chocolate. If you get a meal it comes with a side salad and soup. The bagel was soooo soft. You can definitely tell that the bagel is baked fresher daily. I was a little disappointed that I missed their infamous Benedict by 3 mins ! (Kitchen closes at 3pm). I definitely would like to return and try their Benedict's !!

Yelp
Great BLT and soups and salads. Plan to go back whenever in the neighbourhood. Service people were super nice. .

Yelp
Perhaps I'm being too harsh with three stars for Bagel St-Lo: the space reminds me of a 90s neighbourhood cafe and the staff were downright the sweetest (and honestly really patient when I walked clearly not knowing what I was in for). I think where I can't justify a higher rating is in the product: these are almost New York style bagels (this is Verdun, ya'll!). On top of that, selection is limited: sesame, poppy, plain and cheese, and I found the taste factor just OK. What kinda got me bummed out was the cheese bagel: it's legit just a plain bagel with a piece of cheese on top and significantly pricier than the other options. That's not a cheese bagel, people! Onto the more positive: when I visited on Saturday they were also selling $15 giant boxes of past-prime veg that local shops were passing. I got SO much good food for $15! This also definitely added to the nice community vibes as it shows they're committed to reducing waste. I also picked up their house cream cheese which is pretty good but wayyyyy too expensive. Honestly, I dig this place enough that I'll probably be back, but not really for the product, much more for the nice staff and community vibes.

Yelp
Excellent Montréal style bagels with lovely service and fantastic atmosphere. As a Melbournian, my standards for coffee are high and this place definitely meet them. Love that the meals are served with fresh fruit. Would definitely recommend.

Yelp
*COVID-19 EDITION* A M B I A N C E Don't forgot to wear your mask inside! Adorable coffee and bagel shop located in Verdun! Amazing spot to grab a latte then walk down Wellington! C L E A N L I N E S S Pretty good! I have no complaints! O V E R A L L Q U A L I T Y These bagels are wonderful! Growing up on St. Visitor's bagels I've been spoiled, but these are a close second for me. My partner likes these more! The bagels are super tasty and less dense than others. They also have custom homemade cream cheese! I've tried the "Leak and Bacon" cream cheese and it's AH-MAZING. I also tried the "Sun-dried tomatoes & Bacon" but it exploded in my white bag and stained the bag, tasted great but mixed feelings over the whole experience. My sister tried the "Jalapeno" cream cheese and I had a bite and it wasn't too hot which is nice! I can't do spicy food but this was tasty! They make good coffee and have different vegan and cow milk options. When ordering breakfast, my partner believes that they serve an inacceptable amount of beans! We want more beans! C O S T Pretty standard brunch costs! But the bagels are wonderful and quite inexpensive! Highly recommend! W A I T T I M E S If you're just coming for bagels or coffee the wait is very quick! However, if you want to sit down and order breakfast and lunch there is a short wait! P A R K I N G & L O C A T I O N On Verdun and Argyle. Really close to the Wellington walkway in Verdun. The street is less busy than Wellington, but still has some cute shops. There's paid parking on the street and free parking on side streets!

Yelp
A great place to go to have a relaxing brunch in a cozy cafe and pick up bagels for the week before you leave. The brunch menu is yummy and the ambience is just right - a bit of bustling but still nice and cozy. The bagels are a bit on the denser side, so they are really great when toasted - it will be crunchy on the outside and chewy in the inside. Also, if you want to pick up meals from the store freezer, I recommend the lasagna! Tastes homemade.

Yelp
First time checking out bagel st-low and it was nice. The place was packed for a Monday afternoon inside and out so it had to be good. Got the blt which was really good and crispy bacon just how I like it :) The salad is nice that comes with it but should be more as the bagel isn't very filling. Will be back for the blueberry cream cheese and bagels :)
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent bagels that are firm and chewy. Nice taste too. Each bagel looks hand made.

Yelp
I really loved this place. Situated about 15 minutes outside of Montreal in a little bustling hipster ish neighborhood, this bagel / coffee joint is perfect. Indoor and outdoor seating, a big couch, wonderful aroma of coffee, and a Moroccan vibe with skinny love playing on the speakers. We had a bagel with smoked salmon and onion, with a coffee for $9. Now, keep in mind this review is coming from a Jew who grew up on New York bagel and lox sandwiches... But it still blew my socks off. The bagel had a nice crunch but was still chewy on the inside. The onions sliced so thin that you just could taste them without overpowering. And the price point? Hard to beat. I would go back in a heartbeat. The coffee was pretty delicious as well. The ambiance was perfection to me-- cozy, artesianal but inviting, staff were engaging but let you live your life. Totally wonderful spot, highly recommended!!

Yelp
Terrific bagels. Milkshake best I have had in ages. Fresh squeezed orange juice. Nice outside area, friendly staff. Homemade jam itself worth the trip
google avatar

Donald S.

Yelp
Thanks. The food is simple, fresh and tasty. And is creatively dominated by the bagel which their offerings profess as their ubiquitous, ever-present ingredient, in an amazing variety of choices. The coffee is self-service and starts with your choice of any available mug you fancy from those displayed from their very own niches along the wall. Once you choose one, you're off on your own to help yourself to pour your selection from the various brewing urns currently competing for your heart. And you can return for another cup at your pleasure! Finally the place is staffed with an attractive group of young waitresses who warm your heart with a smile and a distinctively warm politesse as they take your food order and shortly return with it, to warmly fulfill your pleasure. What more could you possibly ask for! You'll be so glad you came!! those available

Yelp
I came here for brunch and got the healthy plate. The bagel was really good and the rest was just standard. Staff was friendly and it was easy to find parking. The ambiance was nice and relaxed.

Yelp
Really like this spot located a bit far from Montreal's city center. If I didn't think that it was a bit pricey for the type food/location I would give it a 4 stars easy. Service comes with smile and people seemed to be happy to work here which I love! You should try one of their breakfast/brunch or even just a bagel. Drinks are nice too but again pricey for what it is.. Sorry I'm European so used to not paying dumb prices for simple food! I would probably stop there again when I work nearby and already recommended it to friends in Montreal.

Jessie S.

Yelp
lattes were extremely bitter croutons too crunchy overpriced for quality , saw the hash browns are storebought period
google avatar

Yelp
Finally I don't have to haul my ass over to Mile End anymore to buy fresh bagels! I just found this place while walking back home from the library. It already has the hum of a very busy place and it's only been open for a little over a month. I saw breakfast specials posted on the hanging chalkboard, all the furniture is retro-used diner stuff, like the grommeted chairs and formica tables and practically every seat was taken up. I didn't sit down for a proper breakfast or brunch but I plan to soon since the plates I did see people noshing off of looked great. Instead I picked up a half-dozen fresh-and-still-warm sesame bagels on the go. While St.Viateur bagels are a perfect 10 IMHO, I'd give these bagels a very respectable 7.5. They're fresh, warm and found in your own neighbourhood. I'm sold.

Yelp
Ok so I haven't been here in about a month, but after this week's local Yelp about good cafés to check out I was shocked St Lo wasn't on the list! So i checked their Yelp page and was shocked again to note that every single review omitted to mention my favorite aspect of this place: IT'S DOG FRIENDLY!! That's right! Bring ur bestest 4 legged pal with you no problemo! They're also kid friendly: they have a nice lil bucket of old skool toys for ur kiddos to play with while u sip ur favorite beverage and munch on one of their amazing bagels. They also have a cute lil back terrace (and front terrace btw) in the summer. The decoration is worth mentioning too because it's very eye-pleasing and they often have local artists work on display/for sale. This place definitely shoulda made it on this week's local yelp, I don't know how it was missed!
google avatar

Lauren S.

Yelp
I hadn't come to this place in years, mostly because the space was so limited that there was always a huge lineup... but im happy to see that they expanded ! We were seated right away since now they have tons of tables inside and on the terrace :) their coffee is self serve which I love, and its some of the best coffee I ever had! I had the omelette de Phil, a breakfast bagel loaded with eggs and meat. It was pretty good, the bagel was soft and fresh. I tried my partner's jambon benedictine, and that was incredible! Ham was perfectly cooked, eggs and sauce were delicious, and once again the bagel was so soft and fresh ! Would recommend this place in a heartbeat! You can buy their bagels to go as well, same with their coffee beans.
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
The perfect place for breakfast. Amazing coffee and bagels and friendly bilingual service.

Chaya F.

Yelp
The food here is delicious! Fruit and bagels are always fresh. It is a little expensive, but the lunch menu is reasonable and comes with soup and a salad. The coffee is good and there's a station where you can fill your own which means you never go without waiting for a waiter or waitress! I wish the breakfasts came with potatoes, the only potato option is a commercial hashbrown, but that is a small complaint. Atmosphere is busy and chic, they have mismatched mugs on display and a nice little nook by the window. Service is good and the staff are never idle.
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
This won't be a full on review, but more like a "cool things to note type of post". So here goes - in no particular order; They get their fresh fruit, literally fresh from a nearby market shop, so it's not the typical hit or miss garnish you get at some other breakfast spots i.e. the fruit is all edible, not just a tip of the watermelon. The pineapple was so good it seemed marinated or sun dried. You get the gist of it. They make their coffee stir sticks out of uncooked pasta (Fettuccini, I think from the thickness). What a great and novel idea or at least to me, since I don't recall seeing that elsewhere. Their poached eggs are "eggcellent" and inspired a go-at-home, after watching how to videos. Their Hollandaise sauce is quite rich and subtly unique. More depth of flavour. Must taste again. Finally they have several shelves of mugs for drink-in coffee. The neat thing is that they are all pretty unique, some are from foreign places, various sizes and shapes and many are donated. This all wraps into more proof that St. Lo is one of those truly local and homey feeling places.
google avatar

Sebastian D.

Yelp
The coffee is awesome, and the brunch plates are delicious. Service is decent and attentive. The potatoes, however, don't match up with the food. It was one cold piece of freezer-burned hash brown. On two consecutive visits. This place is great though. All the other food is delicious (especially the pesto Beni) and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. Just don't get the hash brown until they fix it.
google avatar

Colin F.

Yelp
Love the bagels at this place. No need to head into town for a great bagel or brunch on the weekends. Tip: get the takeout smoked meat bagel for about $6. Chilled place, people, atmosphere and very much like the fact it is independently run.
google avatar

Cessalee S.

Yelp
The food was pretty good but he service was wretched! After sitting and waiting for my food for 45 minutes (a bagel sandwich) I finally asked if it would be up soon. Only to be asked repeatedly if I had even paid for the food. After presenting m receipt, the cook came and brought the food about 4 minutes later and then asked ME why the food never shows up in the kitchen as if I was responsible for their counter communication. And I wasn't the only one. I heard her speak sharply to a woman who had ordered no tomatoes. When they brought out her food with no tomatoes on the sandwich but with tomatoes on the salad, she told the woman that the check was wrong and it only said no tomatoes on her sandwich as if SHE had put in the order on the computer. The other star is because the wifi is good. I came here to do some work and thought I'd be here long enough to have a sandwich but I ended up here an hour longer than I needed to be waiting on food! Ugh!! --------- Ok, I edited to three stars. They offered me a piece of coffee cake and apologized. I'm a sucker for coffee cake.
google avatar

Norma S.

Yelp
I discovered this little gem by accident. Their fresh bagel with whipped cream cheese and salmon is a favorite that I get on most visits. The service is friendly and quick. I don't usually care for restaurant coffee because in 90% of the time it is undrinkable, but here it is excellent .
google avatar

Sonia C.

Yelp
Such a cute little place! I come here often as it is close to home. Their bagels are always fresh and the service is warm. A great little place to sit down for breakfast and coffee.

Yelp
The best bagel in Montreal. Seriously. Big thumb up for this local verdun Cafe. Try the incontournable smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel. Cute and comfy coffee shop. Terrace for sunny days. That's all you need to know.

Dayane F.

Yelp
My new favorite brunch place around the block! I love the vintage vibe going on. If you want filtered coffee you can help yourself and choose your own mug from a miscellaneous collection. I ordered the bagel with smoked salmon, capers and poached eggs. It was so good and well prepared I even ate the fruits on the plate which I never do.

Marianne C.

Yelp
One of my favourite coffee shops in Montreal, and gives Verdun a fresh, comfortable feel. Bagels are to die for and the coffee is delectable. Great cozy space, with couches and good spacing, especially since they've expanded the shop. Perfect for breakfast or lunch, with some class and attention to detail. Would recommend :)

Achim S.

Yelp
great little bagel place with super friendly staff. good coffee and eclectic interior. has my thumbs up!
