Best Bagels in New York City, According to Eater Editors | Eater NY

"This modest Forest Hills bagel bakery does little to advertise itself, offering a broad range of cream cheeses and perhaps the city’s best garlic bagel. Apart from that, the shop offers a handful of stunt combinations, including a blueberry bagel with scallion cream cheese that isn’t half bad. (This is not related to the NJ chain Bagels 4 U.)" - Robert Sietsema

Crab legs on the Cinnamon Raisen bagel everyday for breakfast they let you smoke inside & children under 12 drink for free ( alcohol ) this place is the saving grace of queens boulevard. On the 8th day God came down and blessed the earth with bagels 4 you.

Google
I went in to have a bagel with veggie cream cheese. It was 3:10 p.m. and there was one person sitting there. Just a plain bagel with veggie cream cheese. Not toasted or any drink or anything else. The bagel with 6.99 and was horrible. Like stale wonder bread.. If you are going to serve a bagel with cream cheese for 7 bucks, (which is insane) at least it should be a fresh awesome bagel. I will never go back. Ever.

Google
The pumpernickel bagel was so fluffy! It was the perfect bagel: crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Flavors were on point. Definitely recommend!

I was in this store the last Wednesday morning and the cashier hold the bagel that I ordered with his dirty hands and of course I refused to take it. And he was very rude saying: I am busy do you want it? Yes or no? I really don’t understand why if you are the cashier holding money, you do not suppose to touch the bagels with your dirty hands. It’s easy to know. Be careful guys when you order in this place, because this situation is unacceptable.

Google
I've probably tried this place 15-20 times and I've always been disappointed but it's close to home so I want to like it. After today, I give up. My order was misunderstood - maybe I didn't articulate it well (I did) but instead of trying to fix things, the cashier just did whatever the opposite of that is called. Okay cool. Walked out. Won't be back.

I was visit bagel shop yesterday. Food is delicious. I’m definitely coming again. thank you for Angelo and Max for good service

Google
The food was very good, but the service was not pleasant. I asked for a black coffee, I told the young man who served me not to put milk in my coffee, please, I'm allergic and he didn't look at me properly... he gave me coffee with milk... luckily I opened it before drinking.

Yelp
Good food, quick service. They have such a big variety of baked goods. Always something new on the menu. I work next to this place and in 6 years never had bad experience with service or food quality.
google avatar

Jewel M.

Yelp
I've had enough of this place..They are always messing up orders..if you order cheddar cheese on a sandwich, you get American. You order turkey bacon, they give you pork.. In addition, service in person has been blah and nonchalant the last few times I went there. Definitely done with this place!
google avatar

Kyra-Jeanelle S.

Yelp
Horrible customer service. Messed up my uber eats order multiple times, gave me pork bacon instead of turkey bacon, even when specifying that I am allergic. Every-time I call to speak to a manager I never hear back or get hung up on. Would not recommend.

Rosalba S.

Yelp
Got my order wrong, toasted bagel even though it wasn't requested and they didn't ask me. They play loud Spanish music to please the staff. Will not be returning.
google avatar

Mike L.

Yelp
Ordered a bagel with cream cheese, the young guy behind the counter prepared my bagel quickly but just not the friendliest person. No hello or greeting when I entered and no thank you or anything after I said "Have a good day" after I paid. The bagel was decent enough, not the best or worst I've had but the overall experience was just meh. My actual rating would be 2.5 stars but Yelp doesn't allow half stars so I rounded up to 3 stars.

Yelp
I ordered the strawberry and Nutella crepe. After being somewhat pressured to order, I had to wait for over 10 mins for my food. That would have been fine if it were fresh. I work nearby, got to my office, and found my crepe super cold, the crepe was hard and pre-made, with just the strawberries and Nutella, nothing extra or fancy. $8.70 is a joke.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
Ordered an onion bagel with scallion cream cheese, it cost about $6.50! Hey I know prices are higher nowadays but that is just too high, sorry you have lost me as a customer.

Yelp
We stopped in here because it is across the street from the funeral home. It was a really good decision! Their coffee and tea service was perfect. The cashier was very efficient and the whole place had the delicious aroma of fresh bagels. We're glad we stopped in. It was incredibly comforting.
google avatar

Yelp
Not sure why this place didn't get better reviews. It's quite good with a lot of selections and decent prices. If anything, the omelette might need a little more seasoning. But hey, I can add salt mushed.
google avatar

Jehan J.

Yelp
It's a decent spot to come to for a quick breakfast. Their bagels are really good and taste fresh. My favorites are the sesame bagels and garlic bagels. Their prices are pretty affordable as well. Only thing I'd say is that some things can be a bit bland, such as their eggs and omlettes so make sure to tell them to add salt and pepper
google avatar

Veronica G.

Yelp
While the food is good, the service sucks. My order was completely wrong. By this I mean I was given totally different food. They wouldn't change or get me my right order at all unless I paid again. When I called to complain, I was told it's not their problem. Be careful if you order from them. I am sorry to the person who got my order. Hope you liked egg whites

Yelp
Great fresh bagels! Every time I come here. Owner is a pleasant person. Very welcoming vibe. Nice variety of cream cheeses! Whenever I'm in this part of town I stop by!!

Lauren B.

Yelp
Very unprofessional. My friend and I asked for a bagel toasted with scallion cream cheese. We split the bagel and both took a bite and noticed it was regular cream cheese. Walked back to Inform the man. He wiped the cream cheese off and the bagel and used the bagel to put the scallion on it. And then he blamed us saying we never said scallion.. We also asked for chicken cutlets to go and he gave us grilled chicken. Again blaming us.. he said that chicken cutlets are grilled . Won't be going back.

Yelp
Convenient little bagel and coffee shop in forest hills. They have many other options besides bagels and pastries, such as egg breakfast platters, pancakes, soups, salads, sandwiches, and sometimes even have pizza. They also have 4 fridges with juices and other beverages to go. I come here often to get their homemade large iced coffee for $3.50. It is quite delicious and quickly prepared. In and out in 45 seconds, half the price and time of Starbucks and honestly tastes way better. Their bagels are also delicious and freshly baked everyday. The staff is quick and pleasant.
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered 2 regular coffees and brownie. Received 2 iced coffees and pound cake. You got to do better.
google avatar

Yelp
Their food is great but their service sucks. Long waits for simple stuff. Don't even try to get something delivered online. You'll place an order only to be told it has been cancelled. Just terrible management. I definitely do not recommend this place.

Shondell P.

Yelp
The employees are extremely slow and everything is overpriced.. A small cup of milk is $3.75. You might as well buy a gallon of milk. The food has no taste and nothing is ever fresh in there. Horrible bagel store. You could buy the same thing everyday and it's a different price everyday. It just keep going up.

Julie R.

Yelp
This neighborhood bagel shop has more than bagels. Hubby had a delicious panini and I enjoyed a fresh made to order salad. The service was prompt though there is a wait as orders are custom made and there is a large menu. The times we've visited there was plenty of space for eating in.
google avatar

Pam G.

Yelp
They forgot my bagel, every time everytime I called to tell them, they hung up don't order from them! They'll put on someone that cant speak English!
google avatar

Yelp
The guys there are very rude, obnoxious and inconsiderate. I would never go back there. The tables were dirty. The Russian guy opened the front doors meanwhile it's cold outside because he was hot. He even laughed when I showed him that he didn't give me what I asked for (what I ordered) instead of apologizing he laughed. The two shorter guys behind the counter were complete assholes and thought everything was a joke. The food wasn't fresh either. After the shitty service, you would hope that the food would at least be good. That wasnt the case here. I don't know how they are still in business. Don't waste your time or money going to this place. Giving them one star is one star too much. Do yourself a favor and walk two blocks to the other bagel place. The food is fresh and the customer service is great. They are fast and respectful. "Hot Bialys & Bagels". You are welcome!
google avatar

Glenn V.

Yelp
Having to call out "Hello", "Is anybody working the front today?" is really not the initial start I had hoped for, but it is how my day began at Bagels For You. After a fleeting feeling of turning around and walking out, an employee who was clearly not a counter worker emerged from the back. He begrudgingly took my order, but kept a pleasant demeanor and got my order in the bag without haste. Within five minutes, the counter girl appeared and really did not take much notice nor interest in the slowly growing line behind me. The everything bagel with cream cheese I ordered did not have any "wow" factor, just a standard Forest Hills bagel. However the coffee was really terrific and is the main reason that I may make a return trip to Bagels
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
Great service. Great food. They don't have jalapeño cream cheese and the man made it for me. The apple muffin and bagel were amazing.
google avatar

Yelp
$8.50 for a bagel and coffee. We're talking run-of-the-mill everything bagel with scallion cream cheese here folks, not bagels with water sourced from the highest peaks of the alps, nor cream cheese made from the finest cat's milk. We're talking about a BASIC NYC bagel and C-Town sourced scallions thrown together with some Kirkland cream cheese. When asked about he price, the counter clerk pointed to a $5.99 surcharge for the opposite-of-artisanal creme du crap cc de scallion, and all he could say was, "you know, the world is a crazy place." Um... no. The only CRAZY I see is THIS place with its crazy eight-fifty breakfast "special." Shame on you for your predatory pricing. Shame on you for expecting your customers to spend their hard-earned money on food that would be half the price anywhere else. Shame on me for paying this price (never again). SHAME... SHAME... SHAME...

Yelp
I spent $20 on 2 tuna bagels and a Red Bull!, I asked for a cup of ice this what he gave me .... like really!! U can't spare an F'n cup of ice for my Red Bull!!!

JoJo B.

Yelp
Im really disappointed with this place now. They used to be on time and food was great. Last few times have been the worst and today was last straw. I should have known better than to try to order anything on World Cup day. I wasn't feeling well and had no energy to cook or go out and get food. I placed my order at noon on delivery.com and 1p rolls around i get a call from delivery.com telling me Bagels for you have not accepted my order and they are not picking up their phone. I told them i could wait 15mins figuring they were watching the Cup .....so was i. Game ended i call them, no one picks up. Delivery.com calls me back and i confirm to cancel my order. AND IM NEVER ORDERING FROM THIS PLACE AGAIN. It wasnt only after Delivery.com noticed this, that Bagels For You page changed to closed. To wait an hour, hungry and feeling like crap, totally turned off from this place.

Yelp
I bought half a dozen bialys so that when my mother came in from Florida she would be able to have the real deal New York bialy this morning. When I got them yesterday, they were hot since they were right out of the oven and had a good amount of flour on them. They were surprisingly thick to me for a bialy and there were absolutely no onions. Have you ever had a bialy without a few onions in the center? Yeah, me either...until now. I mean, they are definitely better than any bialy anyone can get in Florida, but they are by no means great compared to others that are available on Queens Blvd. It was the first place that I saw open at 6am so I jumped at the chance to get what I needed when I had the chance. I will not be rushing back to this bagel spot. The man behind the counter was very nice though and gladly sliced them for me so that I didn't have to do it myself later.

Yelp
I know I gave it a positive review but I'm gonna totally take that back I went again they had a little buffet area with the food and I wanted to get the salmon once again I had taken no more than four pieces and the boss or whoever it is that works there he's not a chef obviously he just told me all you can't be taking so much because there are other people that have to eat and I told them sir I am making a purchase and it's for my coworkers and myself why are you complaining you're making money he was just so nasty saying You know Simon is very expensive and I'm like so why are you sending it don't cook it if you're going to complain people buying more than four pieces makes no sense I never went back there again because it's not right if we're making a purchase why are you complaining it's food and you're making money regardless disgusting I will never go back there I don't recommend this place why are you opening the Buffet in the back if you can't even take what you want!!!
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite little bagel place! A bagel is a bagel (lol) but their staff is very sweet and I'm so happy this place is right across the street from me. Also - they put hot coffee in your iced coffee first to melt the sugar (ugh, genius!)
google avatar

Venoth N.

Yelp
I have to admit, Bagels For You was certainly fabulous. I love the vibe. Everything that I have ordered was really great and I would return to have it again! The crew is really a highlight of this place because they are always fast, courteous, and provide service with a smile! I could go on and on about Bagels For You.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Awful experience, this morning I ordered for pickup and went in and asked to get my pre ordered pick up the employee ignored me and I eventually had to ask 3 people to get my food, was so annoying. The staff are very rude and unprofessional. I will never order from here again !
google avatar

Farhana R.

Yelp
Quick and easy breakfast that's actually tasty. Everything tastes really fresh and the prices are really fair and affordable. 2 eggs and bagel for $3? The bagels are really yummy and soft. What's not to like!?
google avatar

Laura P.

Yelp
This is the best bagel place in Forest Hills. The bagels and cream cheese are extremely fresh. Their coffee is delicious as well as their fruit smoothies. I also love their omelette. I always have excellent service and and a tasty meal here.
google avatar

Dori B.

Yelp
I ordered through Grubhub, and although my order arrived in a timely manner, the bagels are lousy. They're stale and I did not receive what I ordered (nor was I called to ask if I wanted anything else). I also requested that the bagels be sliced open and cut in half, but they weren't. Recommendation: Stay away.
google avatar

Isabel J.

Yelp
I came here on a Saturday morning for a late breakfast since my breakfast buddy is a regular here. There was a line but it moved pretty fast since there were about three people behind the counter helping customers. I decided to go with an egg, turkey bacon and cheese on a toasted croissant and it was pretty tasty and it didn't take long to get after placing our order. They had a few selections of spreads and pastries, the only negative was that their bagel selections were limited and I didn't see any whole wheat which are my favorite but I didn't ask so maybe they were just not on display.
google avatar

Steven M.

Yelp
They a local bagel joint and I'm glad they are there :) my personal fav is the smoked salmon sandwich.
google avatar

Maggie H.

Yelp
Do not order delivery from them. They get backed up and then purposely don't answer the phone. I order a bagel, tea and juice at 9:30am on a Thursday. It's now 11am and I still have no update... Guess I'm out $22...
google avatar

Anderson C.

Yelp
This bagel shop is my 2nd choice for bagels in the morning. That doesn't mean that they aren't good. I think if they opened just a tad early than 7am it might sway me to grab my bagel fixes here more often. Having to get to work earlier than most people sometimes doesn't gives the best options breakfast wise. The service has been steady. Most times they are good, some times they are great. I normally just get everything bagels with jam but they do have sandwiches here as well as the option for making sandwiches in bagels. I've tried a few and waiting on a few more before I make my final judgement but it's all been delish. You can always refer to my pictures for clarity. FAN.
google avatar

Jenine F.

Yelp
We love this place for bagels, egg sandwiches and coffee - especially when we're off to a morning adventure. Their bagels are fresh, warm and delicious, coffee is just right and they know how to make a killer egg sandwich! The line moves quickly, so you won't wait long and there are tables to sit and enjoy your breakfast or baked goods if you're not in a rush. There are other treats too but I haven't tried them yet.
google avatar

Colleen F.

Yelp
I came here on a Sunday morning around 10am. They have 2 people behind the counter, one of them brand new. The rest of the workers are doing who knows what in the kitchen. The new girl was nice, but the line was starting to get backed up and she kept having to ask for help while there are 5 other employees doing idk what. The fresh squeezed OJ could have been colder. But the bagel was good. My biggest complaint is it is $2 extra for bacon... I ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese and bacon and it set me back $5. On top of having 3 bagels to choose from (idk why they didn't stock up bagels on a Sunday morning, isn't that one of their busiest days) it was a very disappointing place. 1 bagel with cream cheese and bacon with a small fresh OJ cost me $7.50. Be ware!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely horrendous service. My husband and I placed a pick up order by accident but called the restaurant immediately to switch it to a delivery. So then we waited. We waited for an hour and then decided to give them a call wondering if our food had left or not. When the guy picks up we ask if our food had left and he tells us that their delivery guy couldn't deliver it because the buzzers weren't working... Then we tell them we never got a phone call from anyone, and he replies with "Oh, he didn't have a cellphone." At this point we were thoroughly annoyed and hungry. We proceeded to tell the guy that we didn't want the order anymore and that we were going to cancel it. I guess the thought of losing this sale panics him because he begins to sweet talk us and say that he could send it right away. But we knew that they would only send the same food and by then it will be cold. Then he says that he will make another order fresh. Thirty minutes later when we get the food my husbands egg and cheese omelet was extremely hard and cold. The same for my BLT. This business has no business ethics and would serve crap to their customers and blatantly lie to you. When we asked for a refund the restaurant denied. Thankfully seamless was very understanding and pushed a refund through anyways.

Yelp
$10 for a bes on a roll and a tea. Idk what this place is thinking. Crazy prices. Great hair on the person who helped me.
google avatar

Erika R.

Yelp
The good: the food is really good..I especially like their Mexican salad. The bad: the workers are like robots...zero personality. You ask a question and they're barely audible. You say "thank you" or "have a good day" and you get nothing in return. In conclusion; food is delicious, but a friendly staff would bring this place to a better level.
google avatar

Sanjana K.

Yelp
For all those people that say that this place has a 5 star quality, it's lies. To start off, my pineapple mango smoothie had brown paper in it. I had a everything bagel with vegetable cream cream cheese, the bagel was not fresh at all, the cream cheese tasted like it was sitting out in a nonrefrigerated area. My husband had a Philly cheesesteak which has to be by far the worst. The bread was never toasted from the inside so the juices from the onions, peppers and STEAKUMS (artificial meat) made the bread all soggy. There was so cheese in the Philly CHEESEsteak. The service was horrible. When the cashier was addressed about the no cheese in the Philly cheesesteak, he made smart remarks before rectifying the situation. I wouldn't even give this place half a star. Next door would've been the better option. The place smells great, the food is made right in front of you and the service is much better. I would tell anyone to avoid this place whenever possible!!! Horrible food and horrible service!!!
google avatar

June F.

Yelp
This place is great. Like the bagels the homemade cottage cheese and the music! My only qualm is the fact that there is no bathroom. Staff is super nice. Will be back if I'm in the area again.
google avatar

Shelley L.

Yelp
This place is super popular for breakfast. We stopped by before going to the park in the area to grab some breakfast sandwiches. There was a line but the guy behind the counter kept things flowing. Ordered a sausage egg and cheese, bacon egg and cheese and everything bagel with cream cheese and jelly. All of this under $13 which is amazing. Super fresh sandwich, delicious, hot, great size and great price! It's hard to find decent sandwiches at a decent price nowadays. The sausage was flavorful. Bacon was okay. I like mine crispy so this is in between crispy and soft but still a very tasty sandwich. The egg was perfectly fluffy. Love the fresh, soft roll. Bagel was also fresh and slightly toasted with plenty of cream cheese which I love. It's one of the few bagel shops/breakfast places we saw in the area and glad we decided to walk in. Definitely a go-to for when we're in the neighborhood.

Natasha S.

Yelp
Such a great spot! They are so quick with delivery and the food tastes fresh and always right. The apple and cherry sticks are my absolute favorite and I always snag a few, whenever they are available. Awesome people working there and super kind!
google avatar

Allie A. H.

Yelp
This place is not only expensive for the type of poor service & mediocre food they sell but on top of that, they hire counter people that do not understand and don't know how to interact with customers. My husband & I went there on Sunday afternoon, 7/1/18 & placed a simple order to stay. Not only were we overcharged but we were given the wrong order. When we went back to ask why we were charged so much for a wrong order, the male cashier at that time with a strong European accent actually blamed it on the hot weather & on the fact that he had been on the job since 6am!!!! He never apologized & just kept giving us excuses instead of making things right! Nonetheless, we demanded our money back & left the wrong order right there on the counter. We won't be eating there again as this establishment has such disrespect for customers!!!!!
google avatar

Masayo K.

Yelp
I had a bagel (toasted) with butter on Sunday mid day. I don't think bagel had right texture. It was very spongy.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Charged $14 for a breakfast that costs $6 at other places. Food was very good but not worth it when you can get breakfast and lunch for the same price a few blocks away!
