The 11 Best Kolaches In Houston, Ranked

"As evidenced above, The Heights has a lot of kolache options vying for attention, and Bakery Donuts falls on the low end. Even though kolaches here are still tasty, the dough feels dense and tastes like a warmed-up dinner roll. Bakery Donuts works great as a regular donut shop, a place to grab a few dozen early mornings without waiting in line. It’s solid and useful, but not our first choice." - chelsea thomas, gianni greene, julie takahashi

Google
Best donuts in Houston, hands down! Don’t want to name names, but a very popular donut chain has nothing on the quality here. The donuts are soft, airy, perfectly sweetened and fresh! I ordered customized letter donuts for a birthday and the quality was great, both in look and taste. Can’t remember the name of the lady but her customer service was wonderful. It’s a small, “hole in the wall” establishment, but don’t let its looks fool you. You don’t want to pass it up. Great donuts are here! Next time we’ll try the kolaches.

Holly Price

Google
We LOVE this place, the owners are so sweet and they have fantastic custom letter donuts that are a hit at every one of our kids parties. We also usually bulk order kolaches, the new boudin and croissants are great.

Google
My first time going here and truly love it every bite of it 🫡😎 I recommend you the sausage egg and cheese biscuit add bacon and the regular size kolache sausage , cheese and jalapeno 💯 not bad for the price I pay total of around $7. 25 because I add the bacon on my biscuit sandwich ☺️

Google
I’ve been driving by Bakery Donuts for some time and finally decided to stop in today—on the day Hurricane Beryl is hitting, no less! To my surprise, they were open and serving with a smile. The staff was incredibly friendly, and being the only open place within 5 miles was a lifesaver. Their Vietnamese coffee was a perfect 10/10, and the breakfast kolaches were amazing, with vegetarian options available too. And the donuts? Absolutely delightful. I highly recommend Bakery Donuts and couldn’t be happier with the service. This place is a hiddengem!

Google
This place is amazing! They have the best kolaches and donuts in town. They use real bread and ingredients that are better than Kolache Factory and Shipley Do-Nuts.

Google
It's a small Mah & Pah donut shop... Need I say more? They're always so friendly. Had me a sausage & bacon kolache and it was delicious. Also tried the ham, bacon and cheese croissant and it was also delicious. Donuts are good also. They also have all kinds of drinks, Gatorade in the morning hits the spot. They also have Vietnamese coffee... That'll wake you up! Suggest you try it.

Google
Came here a few years ago when we were visiting Houston and my husband has not stopped talking about the apple fritter. So of course when we were in town again we had to come back. We were afraid that it wouldn't match the last experience. But it did! We also got a jelly filled Bismarck, Bourdain, glazed donut, and two iced coffees. The woman behind the counter is extremely friendly and kind. We will definitely go back again and we would recommend.

Google
Bakery Donuts on 11th Street is a true delight! The owners always greet you with a warm smile, and their selection of donuts, kolaches, and tacos is impressive. I especially love their special letter donuts, perfect for making any occasion extra memorable. A must-visit spot for anyone craving delicious treats and friendly service!

Yelp
The owners are so nice!!! Great donuts and kolaches. My family loved them. Ms. Linda says 100000/5

Chip G.

Yelp
Sausage Jalapeño & Cheese kolaches are awesome! The family that makes them are even better!!

Danielle S.

Yelp
Always have delicious donut options and kolaches. Plus, the owners are so friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
Just discovering this mom and pop shop down the street from us! Owners are so sweet and nice. They have a great variety of kolaches and donuts and after eating them, they've got better kolaches than Shipley's. The bread is softer and the quality of the fillings is just better. I did get a half dozen of mixed donut holes and a blueberry cake donut and those were tasty as well! I'd like to come back to try more of their stuff and their cafe sua da. Come give them a try! No frills just good quality donuts and kolaches.
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
No frills mom and pop shop in the heart of the Timbergrove Heights. Surrounded by all kinds of gentrification and construction issues on 11th, it manages to survive at the corner of Shepherd and 11th. Small parking lot in the front, parking options are limited otherwise to the side street. Interior is no frills and the owners are very friendly. Prices are elevated here compared to some other kolache shops, I'm sure rent here isn't cheap. Everything looks pretty solid and selections are on par at least with other shops from kolaches to donuts etc.
google avatar

Yen Nhi N.

Yelp
One of the rare kolache and donut shop that open after 12 PM. Must say that my favorite is the boudin kolache! The shop owner is a super sweet lady.

Yelp
Breakfast with a smile. Mom and pop shop that had def been affected by the pandemic as well as the major construction on 11th street. With the pandemic, they were in a crunch plus lots of people working remote doesn't help their morning business. Once things seem to normalize, the downsizing of 11th was a nightmare. Stopped in to show support and fill my belly with goodies. I rewarded myself with a few varieties of meat kolaches. Spicy boudain, sausage + cheese + jalapenos and their spicy sausage (some fancy name but can't remember) as well as donut holes. (I am not much of a donut person but I love my holes lol) I heard their spicy boudain and regular boudain was delicious and the reviews were on point. The spicy boudain was delicious with a hint of spice that made it good without too much heat. The sausage + cheese + jalapeno was filled with deliciousness. Sometimes places don't put enough jalapenos or cheese and the kolaches are bready but these are the perfect ratio. Saved the fancy sausage one for the next day and I will say that it heated up well. And tasted just as fresh as if I'd just picked it up. Overall, def a great breakfast spot. The owners - husband and wife are so darn adorable and friendly. If you are in the area during breakfast hours, stop in.

Yelp
Let's start with the fact that my daughter always talks about how nice these people are which means so much to a Mom that lives 1300 miles away. I was a bit skeptical when my daughter said she wanted donuts at her wedding, but your donuts were a huge hit! Thanks for your part in making her special day wonderful.
google avatar

Yelp
Although I felt that the filled donuts were awesome and filled to the brim, I came to find cronuts per a previous review. There are NO, I repeat, NO cronuts here! Otherwise, donuts are good and I felt reasonably priced, and really nice service there. Really brighten up your mornings. Enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
Super friendly, lots of yummy selection. Jumbo-sized kolaches, glazed old Fashioneds, glazed blueberry, which are hard to find at some donut shops. Vietnamese iced coffee as well! We'll be back.

Matthew P.

Yelp
Awesome little doughnut shop in the Heights. Kolaches are delicious, big donut selection, and muffin options for the non-donut eaters amongst us. The lady whose family runs it is very nice and is good about remembering her customers. The parking lot is a little small, but you generally won't be there very long, anyway.

Matthew P.

Yelp
I love this place. Little family-owned doughnut shop that reminds me of my childhood eating Southern Maid donuts. They have everything from kolaches to muffins to doughnuts. The lady who runs this is super sweet and always in a good mood.
google avatar

Cruz R.

Yelp
Reaaallly good kolache and donuts!! The dough was really baked perfectly and the different options for kolache he had were great! Friendly service too!

Carla B.

Yelp
These donuts are the best! Never greasy fresh tasting and a good price. Our choice over high end donut shops.
google avatar

Adrienne L.

Yelp
Not sure about the other guy's experience about masks, but everyone was masked this morning. We're happy to support a mom-and-pop that has a wide menu of breakfast sandwiches. I love donuts, but I love a BED biscuit more. My husband was thrilled to get a boudain kolache. Minimum $5 purchase to use a credit card. Support a small business!

Chris B.

Yelp
Best donuts in town by far. The old fashioned glaze are my favorites, but the apple fritters are amazing as well. Every donut I've had there has been great, jelly filled, icing on top, blueberry, etc. They are even good a few days afterwards which is unusual for donuts to still taste good. The owner is so sweet and I love that it is family operated and not a chain. Actually better than the chain donut shops in the area and worth the drive.

Yelp
Cleanliness: 5 Quality: 5 Service: 5 Taste: 5 Stopped by for some baked goods for work. Picked up some kolaches and muffins! The carrot muffins were divine! As were the cranberry. I grabbed a chicken mozzarella stuffed croissant for later which was quite filling. All items are baked fresh each day and tastes like it too! The prices are fairly decent however so it's absolutely worth a visit. The owners were so sweet upon entrance. And will talk you through the baked goods step of the way.

Scott K.

Yelp
Place is real good. Variety of donuts but I recommend getting the sausage egg n cheese biscuit. It's crack. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Ilsa G.

Yelp
This place is a great spot for Kolaches! We ordered the regular boudain, spicy boudain, and the sausage/egg/cheese/bacon. My favorite was the spicy boudain, not too spicy but the inside was DELISH! Also have to mention that the owners are the sweetest people ever! We will definitely be back.

Yelp
The eclairs at Bakery Donuts are the best I've had anywhere. The chocolate frosting is rich but not overly sweet, and the cream filling is amazing. The kolaches are good too (they have Boudin sausage!) The couple that runs the place are super sweet and have been in the neighborhood for decades. Please support this local business!
google avatar

Yelp
Wonderful kolaches and donuts, friendly atmosphere. One of my favorite donut and kolache shops in town, highly recommend!

Yelp
Didn't make it to Queen Do-Nuts on 18th today, so I opted for the closest "hole-in-the-wall" donut bakery, Bakery Donuts. Got there just before closing at 1:55PM , and was surprised to see such a huge selection remaining. Started picking out my half a dozen for the discounted price of $5.24, instead of $0.94 each, but due to two stuffed eclairs, that cost a whopping $1.99 (!!!) each, I ended up paying $6.80 for the following; 1x chocolate covered eclair with white cream filling - 4/5. Plenty of insanely sweet white cream, with ample chocolate topping. Very tasty. Drawback is the price. Queen Donut eclairs cost around $1.40-$1.50/each by comparison. 1x maple covered eclair with custard filling - 4/5 - love custard; love maple donut; combined, it works .. it just took till after eating half of it to wrap your mind around it. And it's LOADED with custard - big point ! Price [against the competition] is again a drawback. 1x shredded coconut on white glaze donut - 3.5/5 - my #1 fav type of donut, so nervously excited to try this one. It's a BIG donut, which is a plus, but It didn't have ample glaze & shredded coconut on it to match. Also lacked some freshness; it had some of that end of day dryness to it that kept it from a 4. 1x shredded coconut on chocolate covered donut - 3/5 - I can't tell if it's the freshness of the donut (or lack thereof?) , or the chocolate glaze, but something was off with this one. The Shredded coconut saved it from a score of 2. 1x strawberry sprinkled cake donut - 1/5; dry "cake" type donut; glaze was chalky and disappointingly flavorless. Freshness questionable? The donut was visibly smaller than regular donuts, but more compact/dense from the cake-batter. Overall, taking into account both taste/flavor and price/value, Bakery Donuts get a 3/5. I'll come back at a future time, and when I do, I'll make a point of getting there much earlier, when they're fresh out of the oven.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the simple facade--this place still makes the BEST kolachies and donuts. Also I just discovered boudin kolaches--perfectly seasoned rice and meat wrapped in a light dough, are you kidding me!? Amazing. When I came in the middle of the day, all the employees were wearing masks and I could see someone making fresh dough in the kitchen. Everything was clean and sanitized. I love supporting his mom and pop bakery, your dollars really make a difference here.
google avatar

Yelp
Small Donut Shop with a nice friendly owner, he seemed somewhat surprised almost put off that I ordered only one glazed donut (so I let him keep the change from the dollar to pay for the small bag) but this was my first visit here and this sampling would determine whether this is the donut shop that becomes my go to shop when in town. Arriving just after 6:00 AM I was a little disappointed to find the donut wasn't warm. The donut was nice and tall so it was fully raised prior to being placed in the fryer. It was a little heavy for a glazed donut in my opinion, but after cooling down and sitting it's not all that uncommon. The jury is still out where it ranks on my quest to find my favorite donut shop in this part of Houston since I have many more places to sample, but theres nothing bad here by any means. I definitely will stop in again since its between where I stay and where I work when I'm in town.

Yelp
This is my favorite Kolache / donut shop in the Heights, and possibly in all of Texas. Dany is the absolute sweetest, her family makes great pastries and savories. She has the brightest smile and will probably put a smile on your face too. :)

Priyanka G.

Yelp
The best donut/kolache shop around and the owner is super sweet, friendly, and has the brightest smile! The Vietnamese coffee is so good!!!
google avatar

Alli J.

Yelp
Can't say enough about this family owned donut and kolache shop. The food & beverage business is full of challenges and they always have a smile on their faces and are appreciative of business. I stopped in last week to take donuts and kolaches to staff members on my team, as a thank you, and our staff and I loved the breakfast snacks!
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
Nice little donut shop right off of 11th in the Houston Heights been here several times and always have quick and friendly service from the two different people I have seen Working here. Ps there much cheaper than the competition in the area but it a no thrills regular donut place.

Yelp
When you step foot in this place, U2's The Sweetest Thing will be playing in your head. And once you take a bite of one of their delicious nommy food, the track will change to Depeche Mode's I Just Can't Get Enough. And when you're all out of donuts, the soundtrack will once again change into Billy Idol's Rebel Yell because, "in the midnight hour babe, she cried more, more, more!" I stumbled upon this place because for whatever reason Hugs & Donuts was closed and I had to meet someone up in the area. Well, my fellow Yelpers approve of this place so I've got to give it a shot. Located on 11th St, just East of N. Shepherd, this place wasn't hard to find at all. Just an old school donut shops with lots of selections and delicious kolaches to choose from. I was hungry, so I got one large and one small cheese sausage kolaches, along with a dozen donut holes and a couple of plain glazed donuts. All these? Just a little over $7. Wowza!! Talk about affordable considering the location. The lady behind the counter was beyond friendly. When I walked in, she was helping another customer and she acknowledged me right away. As soon as she was done with the other customer, she smiled and said to me, "I can help you now!" And although my total was more than the minimum $5 charge for credit card, I decided to pay with cash anyway. As she was giving me my change, she thanked me for paying with cash so she wouldn't have to pay the credit card fees. Hey, times are hard! Every little penny counts, yo. Remember, Depeche Mode did say, "everything counts in large amounts." Also, considering the location, her prices are very competitive. A glazed doughnut costs $0.79. At Hugs & Donuts? $2. For the price and the value and the flavor, no doubt that Bakery Donuts got it going on. Will be back for sure to try all the other nommy goodness that they had displayed!
google avatar

Kim H.

Yelp
The jalapeno boudin kolache is the best thing ever. Their kolache dough is nice and soft, a touch of sweetness. I wanted to keep this place a secret but the owners deserve all the attention, they're great.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. The owners are incredible and so hospitable. They greet you with warmth and I haven't had that kind of service in a long time. The donuts and kolaches are some of the best I've had, and it's just a classic high quality shop. It was my first time there today (they were open on Christmas). As a healthcare worker they were able to feed our entire nursing and physician team when everything else was closed, and I can't wait to keep going back. Please stop by and grab a pastry. They're also open New Years!!

Samantha E.

Yelp
Love this place and the owner she makes your mornings brighter we moved recently and still will drive to this shop! Best kolaches too!
google avatar

James R.

Yelp
Well I've visited this place quite a few times and finally this time I was able to get the jalapeño Boudin Colotchie and will definitely keep trying to get more usually by the time I get there they're out in only have regular yet although it is very good as well the jalapeño just throws it out of this world. Darn good breakfast with friendly service.
google avatar

Linda E.

Yelp
I almost gave up on this place until I tasted the old fashioned donut. I must say that what totally saved it for me was the fact that they have the best one I have tasted. A lot of other places neglect this type of donut and concentrate on gourmet donuts. The donut was cakey, moist, and buttery all at once. They have plenty of other selections and the basic staples such as sprinkles, glazed , chocolate, powdered, etc. I tried the glazed and sprinkle and it was just okay for me. They were fluffy so you cant go wrong but there are definitely better choices for this type at other places. They do have a $5 card minimum so be aware if you are only purchasing for yourself. Overall, a solid choice.
google avatar

Ron R.

Yelp
Overall solid traditional donut shop. Very friendly service. The bacon topped kolache is a must try. Nice assortment of breakfast sandwiches too.
google avatar

Ross H.

Yelp
Amazing donuts, nice staff and service!! I had an Apple fritter and it was one of the best I've ever had.
google avatar

Jocelyn C.

Yelp
3.5 stars. Loved the customer service a ton... don't really love the donuts though. Kolaches are 1.49 for a small. The bread is lovely and slightly sweet, almost like a King's Hawaiian roll. The inside tastes really good, too. A respectable and good kolache! Donuts aren't my M.O.- their selection is quite limited, and the glazed donut is pretty heavy on the bread density. Lots of dough to even the raised, so if you like a lot of chew in a donut, this place is good for you. For reference, It's denser with more chew than a Shipley's. The base of all the glazed donuts here are the same heavier raised donut, so my fam wasn't super into any of the other flavors. Blueberry cake donut was kinda flavorless. Fabulous staff... I just don't eat human beings and can't get a sugar high from customer service, so I probably would check out other places nearby on the never ending donut hunt!
google avatar

Carlos G.

Yelp
Little shops like this one are amazing. The favor of their product taste like it should and the service is just out of this world positive and friendly. Just an amazing way to start a day. I definitely will be coming back every time I get a chance.
google avatar

Cameron Y.

Yelp
The jalapeno boudin kolache is a must try! I brought some donuts to the office for a birthday recently and ordered myself a jalapeno boudin kolache for myself to enjoy on the ride into work. It was wonderfully spicy, had a nice texture, as I thought it would be mushy? Can't wait to have another or better - bring a box of these to the office!

Tony S.

Yelp
NO MASK AT ALL! I'm disappointed but not because of the donuts. I was actually going to give this place 5 stars. But then I walk in after a few days and the man working there had absolutely no mask at all! I'm not talking a mask that's showing a bit of the nose, no mask at all! We are in the middle of a pandemic and this is unacceptable. I understand businesses do their best in terms of making sure they can catch up with service and provide food on time, but this is just about following rules!! If no masks are worn, this makes me think what else might take place in the kitchen!
google avatar

Sherry W.

Yelp
This place is great! We met the baker himself! Donuts are made onsite. Cake donuts are $.79/each. There are about 5 tables to sit at. Restrooms are extremely clean. We tried a few different donuts...they were all good, but my favorite was the chocolate frosted cake donut. They had a chocolate glazed donut, which I had never seen before. It didn't taste much different from a regular glazed donut. There is parking in the attached parking lot. Go early for more variety. I will be back!

Nancy R.

Yelp
Wow. Just wow. I am the type of person who thinks pretty much every kolache tastes good, but I've never had anything like the one here with a strip of bacon at the top and cheese and jalapeño sausage inside. It's truly a life changing experience.
google avatar

Lela Y.

Yelp
Like the previous reviewer, we normally go to to queens donuts, but I am always open to try new things.. when we walked in I was impressed with the selection. We ordered 1. Sausage egg croissant- 0/5. First the price is way higher than queen at $4.34 compared to $2.99. The croissant was stale. The top part of it was literally hard.. the egg inside looked like a rubber egg and tasted that way too the texture on the edges were very hard like it had been sitting a long time in that case. It was all in all a horrible sandwich at a higher price than what others would charge. 2. Sausage and egg burrito- can't remember the cost but I bit into it and there were little burned pieces inside the burrito, kind of like the burned pieces in the pan after you've cooked scrambled eggs.. and I could taste it.. We ended up not eating the croissant or the burrito 3. Raised and old fashioned donuts were decent. Again higher than queen in price and not as good imho 4. Donut holes- tasted ok but $1.99 a dozen vs. $1.25 at queen.. Sorry, I was not impressed and super disappointed with the sandwich that had definitely been sitting a few days 2 stars for the people being nice
google avatar

Kristi P.

Yelp
This review is strictly on their kolaches. The smallest little sausage in a loaf a bread. I ordered the sausage , cheese, jalapeño kolache & had one little jalapeño slice. Based on other reviews, looks like I should try the donuts or the boudin kolache. Definitely pass on the sausage kolaches!!
google avatar

Liz T.

Yelp
friendly and delicious. tried this place for the first time today (yes on christmas morning!). we had jalopeno sausage cheese kolaches, apple fritter & blueberry cake glazed. i will def try more again next time.

Yelp
Although I have my go-to Kolache place (River Oaks) and doughnut place (Christy's), I still like to branch out and try other doughnut places. Bakery Donuts is...okay. My niece loved her strawberry iced doughnut with sprinkles, and doughnut holes. I thought my chocolate filled doughnut was pretty tasty, and had a ton of chocolate filling, which was nice. The soft and sweet kolache was pretty good, albeit average, and definitely not up to par with River Oaks's. I had a small coffee and it was very smooth and not bitter at all. It's not bad, but not a place I'd drive out of my way to get doughnuts from. If I'm in the loop, I'd definitely hit up Christy's and River Oaks first for doughnut/kolache cravings.
google avatar

Daniel L.

Yelp
Whoa. This unassuming place is completely awesome. I had heard rumors of these delicious kolaches to be found in the Heights but I had never actually spotted this before even though I have driven by it before many times. Since I was far from my Kolache Factory in the Tunnels today I had to look elsewhere - so I made sure I knew where I was going for my kolache fix. This place is kind of hard to find if you don't know exactly what you are looking for - or you don't spend much time in the Heights. If you take Waugh north from Montrose and turn left on 11th: it is on the right side of the street with its own parking lot out front. The red little steeple thing is easily missed because of the huge Popeyes sign just a bit further ahead. If you hit Durham (or T.C. Jester) then you have gone way too far. If you are at the Kroger's strip mall then you went way too far. It is across 11th from the Dragon Bowl cafe strip mall. Hopefully that helps find it. This is an old school bakery like you would expect to find in a small town in the 1970s. It is really neat to mosey on in here hungry, just like taking a delicious voyage to the distant (not so distant?) past. The woman working the counter was super helpful, friendly, and nice. She even asked how far I was driving to determine how much she should heat the kolaches up so they would still be warm when I got there. That is some good customer service. The jalapeno sausage kolache absolutely obliterates the competition at Christy's in Montrose. Everything Christy's does wrong: Bakery Donuts does amazingly well. The bread is soft, moist, and squishy. So squishy that I want to call it Squishy and have it be my squishy. The jalapeno is just sitting there like a gangster, being mobbed by the cheese, which is appropriate in ratio to the bread and jalapeno, and there is actually some noticeable jalapeno to be found inside. This is one of the best kolaches I have had, Hill Country included. Half a dozen kolaches runs you $7.99 and is well worth every penny.

Yelp
After accidentally going to the shipley's warehouse instead of an actual shipley's (oops) I stumbled upon this place. This is a nice substitute for shipley's. They have a wide variety of donuts. I tried the kolache and loved it. I also got muffins because I needed a minimum charge and they were also good. The seating area also reminded me of a shipley's. This seems like a neighborhood staple and would come back.

C. L.

Yelp
Best kolaches, best donuts, best breakfast! I've been going there for years. The service is great and super-friendly. It's family owned and run. You can eat there or take it to go. Today I bought sausage-cheese kolaches with bacon on top! Everybody loved them.
google avatar

Krista W.

Yelp
I hit this place up more when I lived in the heights.. but I stumbled across it one day for a kolache... they are so good!! Bread is slightly sweet and the cheese is so good and much better than Shipley's! The owner (I think) is super sweet and I always come back when I get a chance!
