Let's face it: This is hardly a hip, happenin' destination. It is no South Coast Plaza, & it's not even Fox Hills, which is also greatly lacking in spite of its *improvements*. Crenshaw Plaza is a place to get in & out of Macy's without Century City's or Downtown's parking drama. (Free outdoor parking)
The *mall* does have a Marshall's, Sear's, Mrs. Field's, See's, & a slew of ethno-specific retailers. Sometimes you need Afro-centric or (increasingly) Latino-focused stores. I mean, where else in LA would you be able to pick up a bright, grape-colored, double-breasted suit & a pair of matching Gators but here? O_O
For those new to LA & in-need of black hair care products, but little desire for rollin' out to the Slauson Swap Meet (now euphemized as the "Slauson Super Mall") or some other wild-shady strip mall, the 'Shaw Plaza features a ton of beauty supply spots where you can find a full-on Bonner Brothers suite of hair goos.
Some prefer to get their "hur" & nails "did" in the mall. It's certainly less intimidating than frantically going from salon to salon on Crenshaw, tryna' get your Remy sewn in.
I will only say this twice: avoid the Crenshaw store-front beauty shops b/c they ARE plagued! Well... unless you're actually INto looking like a Bonner Brothers Convention act. Think rooster do's w/ geometric patterns. But some of you need first-hand experience to believe--
Be on-alert inside of the mall as well, however. Getting one's wefts weaved on the 'Shaw will be no cheap feat. If you're just in on the 4AM Greyhound from the sticks, know that Angels' sistas' pay $150 minimum for weaves & $55+ for a press & curl. And that is c-h-e-a-p! Going to a Melrose salon or Beverly Hills one (frequented by black celebs & wannabes) will run you $250 to $2k, maybe more. I pay $250 at Macy's in the Plaza, the only reason for my 2-star rating.
(Oh, yes, of cooouuurse you could get a $50 weave done down the block in The Jungles in someone's apartment. Of course, your tracks could literally fall out at the dinner table as you try to pretend like that wasn't thread everyone just saw land in your gumbo. Been there; got the mortifying experience to prove it. And, no, it really doesn't blend into the roux. And, no, it ISN'T FUNNY!)
Aside from "hur", 'Shaw Plaza *features* THEE most disgusting Wal-Mart ever. It IS the Wal-Mart from h*ll, true, but it's also the only Wal-Mart in LA's city borders b/c no one else would allow the supergiant in its neighborhood but South LA. If you've ever felt that Wally was run by pigs, this locale proves to be a true trough. Smelly, overcrowded, gritty, a good place to catch a communicable disease... all perfect descriptors. 99% of those on "People of Walmart" have gotta' be from here.
The food court in this mall--? Wait--thaaaaat stuff is supposed to be food? O_o
I shudder.
