Chef Penny Mufuka’s tropical-leaning Thai menu—mango duck, curries, and a rooftop Bamboo Room—draws consistent praise from local critics. In Kansas City Magazine’s dining guide and covered by the Kansas City Star, it’s upscale yet personal, with deep community ties.

Bamboo Penny’s never disappoints! The chicken Pad Thai and egg rolls are my absolute go-to—always fresh, flavorful, and perfectly made. The atmosphere is vibrant, patio seating is also available. Great food, great vibe, and a perfect location. Highly recommend!

Google
Wonderful food; we will be back. The salmon was medium rare, as I requested, and very flavorful. My partner's chicken fried rice was delicious and delivered at a low spice level as requested.

Everything at bamboo Penny's was fantastic! Our waiter was wonderful and very attentive, the food was fresh and flavorful, and the atmosphere was well decorated and beautiful. I would highly recommend for a good date spot or a casual meal with friends. Their tiger cry beef was amazing and the flavors all worked together perfectly. I had soft shell crab in my dish and it was the best I had in a while. I would highly recommend a visit.

Google
Bamboo Penny’s is a must-visit! The modern décor and hip vibe, combined with a lively bar and a variety of seating options, create an awesome atmosphere. The staff is friendly, attentive, and really helps make the experience special. The food is absolutely amazing — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Parking is easy, with plenty of spots around the restaurant and within a short walk. Be sure to save room for dessert — the options are fantastic! Highly recommend for a date night or a fun group dinner.

Google
Service wasn’t great, our waiter was not attentive at all. Even tho we had a reservation we sat for awhile before we were served, and that’s after I had to ask the hostess if we could get some water. Maybe short staffed idk, but for a first time customer I wasn’t impressed. Food presentation was fabulous but the flavors didn’t blow my mind, I’ve have had much better Thai food in KC. My pad Thai was very bland and dry, the chocolate rangoons were tasty with a warm chocolate dipping sauce.

We were a group of 5 and our server Ashley was great at the beginning. To her credit, she warned us they were short staffed but she'd do her best. The later it got, the more evident the shortage became. Small (but important) things got missed (a cocktail, an eggroll, a fork, a sauce) because we were more than halfway done eating by the time she checked to see how our food came out. She DID comp or discount several items, so that's why still 4 🌟 for service. The food: 💯 skip the vegetable "tempura". Most were flavorless, starchy yams/sweet potatoes/white potatoes. I'm not really sure what I was eating, but whatever it was, they were panko crusted. When asked about it, she said they'd recently changed it to that but the menu hadn't been updated. Okay, you need to tell people that when they order it. (Comped!) Everything else was really good, especially the Chilean sea bass! The portion was very small for $42 but it was so yummy that I'd probably order it again. The lobster eggroll was super tasty, but the one I got to-go tasted like someone accidentally spilled the black pepper in the mix. Idk what happened there, but it was almost inedible. Fortunately it was comped. Penny's Rangoon were good. Drinks, dessert and ambience: Such a gorgeous patio with lots of beautiful flowers and a living wall. We were serenaded by Ron Gutierrez and his band, and they were THE perfect vibe on a beautiful evening outside. If you like rum, I highly recommend the One Night in Bangkok. So tasty and you'll feel the rum! We had a birthday and they brought out a piece of mango cheesecake that was heavenly! It had small chunks of what I thought were either mango or mochi, or both. My cousin said she'd come back just for that!

Would definitely come back here again! Made a last minute reservation and they got us in. We had excellent service by our waiter, the yellow curry and it was perfectly spiced and full of flavor. Sat upstairs and enjoyed looking over park place and overall great experience.

Google
I grew up loving Thai food. This is definitely one of the better Thai restaurants around. It is definitely on the expensive side, but everything was delicious and of high quality. The Panang was very good, delicious, rich, and had a strong peanut flavor. The Phad Kee Mao (Drunken Noodles) was quite tasty, with a nice balance of tofu and veggies. The Phad See Ew was also very good, tofu, broccoli, wide rice noodles with a dark soy sauce. The Yellow Curry was good, although not my favorite curry. Potatoes, carrot, on the sweet side. The sampler platter and the Sweet & Sour looked delicious! I definitely look forward to getting back down in the area again and trying more of their dishes. The restaurant has a lovely and spacious atmosphere with lots of plants. The service was good and friendly, they seemed knowledgeable about their dishes and veg options. After tax and tip it was about 35 per, without any drinks, appetizers, or dessert. Highly recommend checking it out if you have a chance.

Yelp
I went here with 6 other women for our work outing. We wanted some authentic Thai food. We ordered multiple dishes and had it family style. We had the following: - Traditional Pad Thai: way too sweet. Also tastes like noodles tossed in the bottle Pad Thai sauce you can get from your local Asian market. Won't order again. - Tom Kha soup: not great. Missing usual Thai flavorings you'd find in soups: lemongrass/galanga/ginger. Won't order again. - Pad Kee Mow: flavor gets tiring and overwhelming after a few bites. Not enough noodles, whole lot of sauce. Won't order again. - Basil Fried Rice Crab: missing Thai flavorings. Where's the crab? Can't taste it. Won't order again. - Panang Curry: too sweet. Missing Thai flavorings. Won't order again. - Tiger Cry Beef: not great, no flavor. Jeow dipping sauce disappointing. Won't order again. Overall, disappointing experience. Not great to an Asian taste palette. Would not recommend if you're looking for traditional Thai food. Ambiance is cute though. If you want cute pictures, just come for the drinks and find dinner elsewhere.

Yelp
One of my favorite Thai places in the metro. Each time I've tried something different and have thoroughly enjoyed not only the food but also the service and atmosphere. The appetizer platters are a great way to try several things and share with the whole table. I personally am a big fan of the egg rolls. Drunken noodles with beef and the salmon dish were both very good. Service was very attentive. Highly recommend this place! It's also in a good location and easily accessible.

Yelp
This is the first time I've been inside Bamboo Penny's. Before I had eaten on the patio which is great but the inside is super pretty - highly recommended for dates. As usual all the food was amazing. I will definitely come back here again. Also, I'm slightly a nuisance with asking recommendations the staff did not disappoint. They were so good.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm come here at least twice a month for lunch. My go to is the Mint salad with salmon. It's so refreshing and has so many flavors in it. Highly recommend checking this place out. The ambiance of the restaurant makes you feel like you step into another world. The service is always top notch and friendly.
google avatar

Yelp
Eat on the patio if you can! its such a cool outdoor space that you wouldn't expect. The food is great! highly recommend the sampler app! Everything we had was high quality and great bang for our buck! Service was great!

Yelp
Bamboo Penny's is ALWAYS a vibe! The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing. There are two levels. You can take the steps or elevator up to the second floor dining area. This is not my first time at Bamboo and it certainly won't be the last. I have dined in and gotten take out several times. Each time the food and drinks have been awesome. This visit I got the Basil Fried Rice (no meat; medium heat level) and Chicken pan seared dumplings. Usually, when I order the medium heat it tastes like it. This time it tasted mild. However, I asked my waitress for Siracha sauce and she brought out a small plate with pepper flakes, siracha and two clear oils with peppers in them. Definitely kicked the spice level up! My friends ordered the veggie sampler combo, lo mein, basil fried rice with shrimp and penny's Rangoon. Drinks: one had a mocktail and the other had a seasonal strawberry daiquiri. They both enjoyed their food and drinks respectively. 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
TL;DR: You're paying for ambiance here, not flavor. If you want your pineapple fried rice served in a pineapple, come here. If you could pass, go to Hot Basil in Overland Park for solid everyday Thai food with bigger portions and better flavor at a more reasonable price. And if you want a place with nice ambiance but better food than Penny's (which, admittedly, used to be better), check out the Roast Duck Red Curry at Pad Thai Restaurant in south OP. The prices there will be high as well, but the flavors and portions are way better value.

Yelp
I am so happy I took my family here to celebrate a birthday. My husband loves Thai food and so I surprised him with a new place and we all enjoyed the food, not one thing did we have did we give a complaint. Our waitress Ashley was helpful guiding us through the menu and giving suggestions (didn't like being pushed to keep buying drinks though) but everything went well. They place is beautiful, perfect for family good family time, a date or a night out with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Highly recommend their patio. The bar opens to the outside and backs up to Barkley Square in Park Place, so if you time it just right it's great food, and you can enjoy live music.
google avatar

Maria-Elena T.

Yelp
Big group dinner here. We were seated on the second floor. Service was great! I got the crispy garlic shrimp. Many got the pad Thai. Someone got the sea bass. It's a local favorite. My shrimp was ok- I'd get the pad Thai next time.

Yelp
First time visitor! And I will definitely be back! We came here on a Sunday for a later lunch, and I was blown away by the location the set up the outdoor seating, the service, the cocktails, and the food! The one thing we had that you do not see pictured is shrimp in a blanket, and they were simply phenomenal! I love that the sweet-and-sour at bamboo pennies includes garlic. It is delectable! We split the laab salad and several shareable plates. Thier outdoor seating is fantastic with plants, trees etc....just wonderful.

Yelp
Food was great, super spicy as requested and very flavorful. Had an underdone pork salad and had a fresh one made with management also adjusting the bill later as they should. Great food, better service and we will be back again. Thank you Skye.

Yelp
Service was good. Great location with solid ambiance. Spring rolls were tasty. A Shrimp option would have been preferred. I had the duck. Was OK, but the dipping sauce was burnt and tasted like "griddle". Wife's Green Chicken Curry was good, but not great nor the best in town (chicken could have been much more tender). Rice was done perfectly. Warm Butter Toffee Cake was a good ending to an otherwise average meal.

Yelp
At Bamboo Penny's you are paying a premium for atmosphere and flowers on your plate. The food here is fine, but honestly not great enough to warrant the spiked price point. Poster child for a restaurant catering to Leawood clientele (rich, white, Thai food amateurs). They know their customers! Patio seating is lovely on a balmy evening and would be a great spot for happy hour. Prepackaged, spongy tofu was disappointing from a place that claims it is high end. Vegetarians like gourmet meals too!

Yelp
Overall, you're paying for the ambiance here. The space is great and it's right in the heart of Park Place. There's a big inside space, upstairs with live music sometimes, outdoor seating upstairs and on the ground floor with fire pits and I think heaters in the winter. The food is good. Plating is nice. No real complaints on the food. It can be pricey. Happy hour is pretty well priced however. Service was okay- I've been a few times and this last time I went for a birthday and I told our server twice and put in our resy we came for a birthday. The server even asked if we came for something and told me she'd bring a dessert out for the birthday girl. That never happened. I totally understand it happens. Busy weekend dinner. But I've heard the same story from a few people recently so I'm not sure. I've been upstairs once and I do think it gets a bit too loud to enjoy a conversation with someone. I think it's a decent place for food if you're wanting Thai and convenience in being able to walk to desserts and or coffee or to lounge outside.

Yelp
The food and the service are always amazing when I visit Bamboo Penny's. I highly recommend the Basil fried rice for those who enjoy basil. The basil can be a bit strong, but in my opinion adding a bit of lime to the rice helps to balance out the flavor of such an overpowering taste of basil. I would also recommend the chicken egg rolls, as the sauce that is paired with it elevates the appetizer entirely Every time I visit Bamboo Penny's, I'm consistently impressed by both the food and the service. One standout dish that I always order and would recommend is the Basil Fried Rice. If you're a fan of basil, you'll absolutely love it; however, the flavor can be very bold, so I find that a squeeze of lime over the rice beautifully balances the intensity, creating a more harmonious and enjoyable bite. I also highly suggest trying the Chicken Egg Rolls. The sauce that is paired with this appetizer is amazing and truly enhances the dish, elevating the appetizer to another level. For dessert, we ordered the Mango Sticky Rice, which was absolutely delightful. It had the right amount of sweetness, making it a refreshing and satisfying way to end our date night.

Yelp
This lunch was fantastic! The basil fried rice hit the spot. Whenever I come to Bamboo Penny's, I always have a good experience with food, service, and the atmosphere.

Yelp
Insanely busy on a Friday night. We sat upstairs and it was overcrowded and hot and humid. The AC units couldn't keep up and they kept spitting out on us- it was annoying and kinda gross. Their Happy Hour is a good deal, but the menu is pretty limited. The Rangoons are amazing though- highly recommend! Drinks were watered down, and our waiter seemed like he'd rather be anywhere but here. I guess I just don't get the hype on this place. It's good, but so are a lot of other Thai places in the KC metro. Bamboo Penny's is nothing super special.

Heidsha P.

Yelp
Great service and beautiful atmosphere right by live music outside, but the food was disappointing. We ordered chicken pad Thai and the duck and the noodles were over cooked and were swimming in overly sweet sauce and the duck we couldn't finish because it was just that bad. We didn't stick around for dessert. It's such a beautiful place but the quality of the food doesn't quite match the ambiance of the establishment.
google avatar

Yelp
We finally decided to try here the other night after being to just about everyone other restaurant in the area. We went on a weekday and were able to get a table within minutes, even without a reservation. The inside of the restaurant is stunning. The server was pretty friendly and was able to describe the menu well since it was our first time. The food was absolutely delicious. I was a little worried about trying anything with spice (even though I love spice) because I am unfamiliar with Thai levels. I chose a mild meal and it was still packed with the flavor. They also brought out a platter of four different options to spice up your food on your own.
google avatar

Aaron S.

Yelp
Wow this place is outstanding. Loved the atmosphere: went with a group but I'd say the low lighting makes it a good romantic restaurant as well. LOVED the food. We started with the Bamboo Combo and we enjoyed every bit of it. For my main, I had the red curry with tofu and it was delicious. Would definitely recommend and I like that you can choose your spice level. In addition to their extensive food menu, I was impressed with their cocktail options. We came on a Saturday night and I think it was around 10pm that they dimmed the lights and started some fun music if you're looking for a fun night out. I would definitely return!
google avatar

Kevin P.

Yelp
The inside of the restaurant is well put together and its really nice! We had a couple different things but for sure going to come back to try other dishes because we all loved our meals. Share as much as you can as all the portion sizes are big!
google avatar

Brandon S.

Yelp
Fantastic food and atmosphere at reasonable prices. The Rangoons were some of the best I've ever had and the Pad Thai was the best I've ever had. The sampler platter was a great way to try lots of appetizers, but my only problem was they wouldn't let us substitute the fresh spring roll for the crunchy salad roll (my girlfriend is gluten free) and it's cheaper on the menu. We also got the Chicken Green Curry and it had great flavor but only 4-5 pieces of chicken and the rest was veggies which for $21 seems a tad high. Other than that though, this is a great spot that I'll be back to.
google avatar

Chi H.

Yelp
Been here a few times already, this place is always a vibe. They have two floors and I had a chance to check both out. First time dining we were seated on the first floor and had dinner. Food came out in a timely manner, looks good and presentable, but wish it was more flavorful like a usual Thai cuisine. Dining upstairs, it's more laidback, had a buffet up there and food was hot and had all kinds to try. The bar is nice, had the sojurito, delicious. Overall, would recommend if anyone looking to dine and have a good time with food and service.
google avatar

Nicholas K.

Yelp
Highly recommend sitting outside for the people watching. Food was amazing and service was decent. Didn't see much of our waitress but we enjoyed the atmosphere and food. One of our fav places in Leawood.
google avatar

Mark G.

Yelp
Bamboo Penny's never disappoints! Today I went for lunch & received excellent service from Ryan! Ryan was very attentive and extremely nice & polite. I had Penney's Fried rice with chicken & Penny's Rangoon. As always, it was delicious and the portions are huge so I took some home. My 4 star rating is because they did not offer a lunch menu & the prices are very high.
google avatar

Nikki R.

Yelp
This is a great spot with a creative drink menu and wonderful flavors! If you want to add more spice they have all the fixings for you! I was glad I chose this spot for dinner and found the options on the menu to be so good it was hard to pick! The flavor was fresh and perfect! The service was great and it was a perfect spot for a cozy date or a family celebration. They have so many cute areas and it was decorated so well.
google avatar

Alison M.

Yelp
All excellent! Plus the lemongrass margarita was very good Most definitely recommend upstairs or main floor

Jennifer G.

Yelp
Amazing food! Service was outstanding! A little pricey, but well worth the money . Excellent lighting and decorations

Nikki B.

Yelp
Upon arriving the ambiance and decor were beautiful. Love that foliage and ad really pretty.we ordered crab Rangoon as an appetizer. We sent it back. It's a cream cheese no meat Rangoon which is stated in the menu (I missed it). It was too sweet but thin and crispy which was good; the crust not the filling. Way too sweet for us. We ordered chicken and beef basil fried rice. The rice was good. They left steak out and when they brought out the side it was bland. The meal was 7/10. I wanted medium heat and didn't taste anything nor were there pepper seeds. Also ordered chicken gaprow with a hard fried egg. This meal was too sweet, no spice, and the egg was not edible. As a reward placement app we got chicken sautee. Overall 6/10.
google avatar

Marisa K.

Yelp
Experience was amazing! Beautiful with live music. Food was good. The pad Thai was underwhelming but the apps were great and the duck was good.
google avatar

Liz A.

Yelp
great atmosphere. Food was not as fresh as I would have hoped. Duck tasted old. Perhaps it was a fermented style of meat that I wasn't familiar with.

Yelp
Incredible food and top notch service! Absolutely delightful! We love Bamboo Penny and continue to bring new faces when we visit.

Megan I.

Yelp
Food $$$, just ok but nice to try something new. Will try the other related places. Service was busy

Yelp
I've already reviewed this local star restaurant but this review is specifically to talk about one of the star server or a gentleman who helped us with the food. His name is Victor, he is one of the nicest person with a bright smile on face helping us pick the right food and went above and beyond to make sure we're comfortable and happy with the service. I mean honestly these are the people who runs the place sometimes not the food. Although the food was good in general but our experience was wholesome.
google avatar

Kay L.

Yelp
I came here for a girl's dinner last night. I have ordered take-out from here before, but this was my first time dining in. We didn't have a reservation and the place was packed (even the bar seats were taken), but we only had to wait about 20-25 minutes for a table. We were seated upstairs. I loved the ambiance of the place, though I will say it was pretty loud. As far as the food goes, I think it's pretty overpriced for what you get, especially compared to other Thai restaurants in the area (2 lobster spring rolls cost $20). The food itself is ok, though my husband loves the Thai sausage and even asked me to order some. Doug, I just wanted to respond to your comments and clarify a few things: I love the idea of an upscale Thai restaurant/lounge. I have been to several in other cities, and I think it's amazing that your family is bringing that concept to KC. I would be more than happy to pay more for the food, if the quality of the food matched the upscale atmosphere. In my opinion, I paid about $5 more for pad kee mao that tasted exactly the same as the pad kee mao I would order from a take-out restaurant in KC. If I came here to listen to some live music and just ordered some cocktails and appetizers, I would be very happy. Of course, this is just my opinion, and I am not a professional chef, food critic, or restaurateur. I know this is a popular restaurant, and one of many popular concepts you have opened in the KC area. I just wanted to say that I stand by my original review. Thank you.

Yelp
Food - perfectly cooked/prepared and tasty Service - Well trained, mannered, and attentive Ambiance - Luckily no music but a LOT of Beige, creamy white and only color is on ceiling and hanging plants. First time there, got 2 appetizers Dumplings (pork) and Chicken Spring Rolls (veggie option is available for either/both) Oh man these dumplings are good - served with a semi mix of soy and like fish sauce you find @ Pho places but with less salt and a bit of sweetness. Spring rolls are a tasty mostly veg appetizer, with two tasty dipping sauces - one a peanut oil and the other like a really smooth peanut butter with a bit of a kick after a while. Decor is great on the ceiling wooden panels and hanging plants. Benches, walls, giant rug and floor IMHO need some color as it seems to me a mix of Beige, Cream, distilled green patterns and maybe a very light yellow here and there.
google avatar

Lou K.

Yelp
Lovely decor and sleek style. The hanging plants were beautiful and it was an overall lovely place to look around in. I stopped by with friends for happy hour. The happy hours deals were good but it was still kind of pricy for the portions. I started with the cucumber gimlet to drink. I also ordered some small plates to share. I loved the Rangoon's!
google avatar

Robert J.

Yelp
Bamboo Penny's is great. The reverse happy hour is fantastic and I've never seen anything like it before. Great prices, great food, and great service. The Bamboo Room is very chill and the music is somewhat upbeat which makes it feel like a very chill party. I highly recommend coming here and having a great experience.

Yelp
Food is so Fresh and delicious Love the selections and the service is always 5-stars. try the Penny Salad, beautiful presentation and awesome dressing too.

Robynn 'Pebblez' S.

Yelp
I absolutely love Bamboo penny, and the bamboo room upstairs is my favorite part. The food and signature cocktails are all good I haven't had anything I don't care for so far. I am a rum drinker and the bar tenders have always been able to curate the signature with rum instead of the liquor in that comes with drinks. My favorite 2 meals are the chicken pad Thai and pineapple fried rice with chicken. Bamboo penny is a place for a cute date night or celebrate your birthday. The ambiance is really nice and the aesthetic is really cute.

Yelp
My sis and I came here for Restaurant Week after our first silent book club meeting (KC Silent Book Club). The Restaurant Week menu was a nice 4 course meal with the option to add a wine flight for an additional cost. We both added the wine flight. The restaurant was busy but we were seated right away without a reservation. Since we ordered the wine flight, that came fist. Let me tell you, the Vigneto Sweet Red wine is a game changer! It was so good. I was glad I got two glasses of that. My other glass was the Chronic Cellars Spritz & Giggles. This was also a good white wine. I like sweet and both of these checked my boxes to the point I'm eagerly searching for the sweet red locally. For my 4 courses, I had the Chicken Egg rolls to start, the Hot and Sour Soup next. My main meal, I got the Pad Thai with chicken, beef and shrimp with no peanuts. Dessert, o got the Petit Four. The food did not disappoint! My Pad Thai was sweeter than I was used to but I added some spicy fish sauce and that helped with the sweetness. I also ordered my hubs the Pad Thai and Dumplings to go. He said the Pad Thai was THE BEST HES EVER HAD!!!! The staff was so nice. We are definitely coming back here!
google avatar

Crys F.

Yelp
We always enjoy coming here about twice a month for date nights. They always have something for my Vegetarian girlfriend and for my vegan self. The veggie dumplings and dipping sauce are crave worthy! The service is always stellar, and I always get a seasonal sangria, a very refreshing drinks!
google avatar

Jolanta L.

Yelp
The flavors of the food were pretty authentic both appetizers and dishes were well prepared! It's more an upper Thai restaurant, the price is a lot higher than other Thai restaurants. Although the restaurant has a reverse happy hour time in the midnight, it's pretty interesting. Might have a try sometime!

Todd R.

Yelp
This place is a must try and then try again! The Thai classics like red curry chicken and pad Thai were both outstanding. Our waiter was fun, energetic and very professional. The restaurant decor is tastefully in Thai inspired theme. I will definitely be going back to do a deeper dive into their robust menu and I highly recommend you do the same.

Tanisha j.

Yelp
Best thai food ever! The ambience is good and their tom yum soup is to die for!!! Amazing!

Yelp
We had a 5:30 reservation on a Thursday evening. We were seated promptly and our waitress immediately met us to take a drink order. She was patient and professional. After we ordered some wine and an appetizer, we took our time looking over the menu. We each chose our dishes and everything was delivered promptly, exactly to order. The ambiance was good (even if the fake plants hanging are a bit cheesy), and we were surprises to see it so busy at 5:30 and with a lot of young families. I'd give this place 4.5 stars. The only thing downgrading it is truly just the bloated prices. $21 for some rice noodles and a little pork seems about 25% too high. My husband's shrimp and rice cost as much as a filet mignon meal at a steakhouse...just felt a bit bloated. Overall we would go again.
