The Best Restaurants & Bars In Columbia City - Seattle - The Infatuation

"Bananas Grill is a Middle Eastern restaurant located near the Columbia City light rail station, which makes it a great spot to grab a quick weeknight dinner or pick something up on your way home. We love their chicken shawarma, falafel, and excellent beef/lamb gyro sandwiches with very flavorful meat and tzatziki that has a spicy kick to it. We recommend dining in, since sometimes the owner gives out complimentary chai lattes." - aimee rizzo, kayla sager riley

Restaurants That Are Extremely Close To Light Rail Stops For When You’ve Had Enough Of The Rain

"Columbia City Station This fast-casual Mediterranean spot is underneath a newly-constructed apartment complex and near a hard hat zone. It’s also next to the Columbia City station, hence its relevance to this guide. Their beef/lamb gyro sandwiches are excellent, with highly flavorful meat and tzatziki that has a spicy kick to it. Chicken shawarma and falafel are good orders here, too. This place is great for a quick weeknight dinner, whether you’re staying to eat it or just picking something up on the way home." - aimee rizzo

I grew up in the vistas and would always come to banana Grill growing up and always got the same thing. The chicken wings were always my favorite but now I grown up and came back from traveling and I feel like they changed the recipe because the chicken wings are not as Delightful as they used to be with the color and the size I was expecting the same thing but seems like they changed the recipe still a great place though

Delicious food. Lentil soup is so good. Everything I have gotten is filling comfort food. I love when I have to work in the area because coming here for lunch is the highlight of my work day.

Google
After our fishing session at Mount Baker park I and my buddy decided to get some food to bring to our brewery. My friend suggested a restaurant right where he lives that makes really good Gyros, so he claimed. Later I found out he was not lying. Parking around dinner time might be a little tricky but not challenging. The food might take longer as well since they only have one cook I think. The space is medium size, clean and cozy. The owner and staff are friendly. We got 2 Beef and Lamb gyros and a Greek fries and we are stuffed. Would definitely stop by again if I am in the area.

Google
Great customer care & support. Very welcoming & kind. After we placed our order, we were immediately given a delicious soup. The appetizer was AMAZING. (We ordered the Banana's Combination.) After we enjoyed our appetizer; falafel, dolmas with a lovely consistency of a side of hummus; our meal came out. We were served a fresh, lite salad paired with gryo lamb, chicken kabobs sided w a hearty portion of nicely seasoned rice topped with grilled onions & chicken. I was greatly pleased with the staff. Our server did excellent at understanding customer cues. He only asked if we were satisfied & if everything was well after we were finished w our appetizer. Then asked if we needed anything else as we were 95% finished & we were conversating lightly while enjoying looking out the window. I really appreciate the server understanding & recognizing the customers personal space while not rushing our experience. He was so very pleasant with a kind smile. We got baklava & it was delicious. This meal was shared between 2. We were on a date. It did not leave us feeling empty, but did leave us satisfied fully. This meal was not vegan. It does appear to have vegan options. Greatly grilled & prepared proteins. They are not skimpy with their proteins/ meats. Please enjoy! I highly recommend this restaurant. What a pleasant experience.

Google
Good service. We were given complimentary lentil soups which were tasty. The beef/lamb gyro was delicious. I wasn’t a fan of the wings- they were dry and unflavorful.

Google
I was super hungry taking the light rail from the airport to Northgate and wanted food! This place was close to the Columbia stop and I went! Ordered a gyro and then they offered me free lentil soup!!!! So glad I stopped! I will be back!

Emina C.

Google
Generous portions and really delicious. Had the chicken wrap and the lentil soup. The staff is also nice and it’s clean. Will come back to try some other food.

Google
The lentil soup…OMG!!! I could’ve ate so many more bowls of it. We also had the chicken kabab plate, dolmas, and a gyro. It was all incredibly delicious, and the workers were so kind!

Yelp
Well if you want soul, you've found it. This gentleman is so loving and soulful you can't escape it. I ordered the fries (regular), hummus and pita, and a chicken sambusa. Amazing shit family! Fries were without salt, so check your fries fam Sorry no pics y'all but next time peaceowt

Yelp
AMAZING SHAWARMA!!! Delicious strawberry banana smoothies too The restaurant has a very chill atmosphere. And the employees leave you alone for the most part apart from taking your order (which I prefer). I walked in expecting an average quick lunch but instead had an almost spiritual connection with my shawarma HAHA. It was love at first bite. I'm out of the state now but I wish I could go eat it again.

Yelp
Nice quiet family owned restaurant where you are always treated with respect and a smile. Located in the Seattles rainier valley. There a variety of food from Gyros to Burger and fries. I opted for lentil soup it's light yet filling.

Yelp
Owner is super friendly, great casual spot for dine in or take out. The lentil soup was one of the best I've ever had.

Shelby G.

Yelp
This place is amazing . I could eat the lentil soup everyday for the rest of my life. Owner is so kind, welcoming and neighborly . I go out of my way to eat at this place regularly because their food is THAT GOOD. Prices are very fair too ! Vegetarian options !

Candra R.

Yelp
Great service, the lentil soup is a favorite. The chicken is a tad bit spicy, love the Sambosa (I'm Spelling it wrong) and the smoothie

Yelp
I know I rate a lot of things 5 stars, but this place REALLY, REALLY, REALLY deserves it. After a hospital stay, the last thing I felt like doing was cooking. Bananas Grill doesn't do their own delivery, so Postmates it is. When a third party does the delivery, it's often cold and a mess, but NOT AT BANANAS GRILL. They do not stand for that nonsense! Not only was my food hot/warm, but each item that might possibly get gross packed together (tzatziki, feta, falafel, pita) was wrapped up so it was not soggy, wet, or messy. I have never in my life seen food wrapped as carefully and mindfully as Bananas packs it. They also included plenty of napkins and a set of silverware. Who runs this place? Cher? Jesus? Nothing would surprise me at this point. Please notice I haven't even gotten to the food yet. AND THE FOOD IS DIVINE. Like over the top, from portions to pricing, it's all good. We got the Bananas combo, baklava, samboosa, and Greek salad. The combo came with 2 chicken skewers, chicken, rice, gyro meat, 2 dolma, 2 falafel, hummus, 4 pita triangles, a little salad of lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes. It's also only 20. There were 2 tzatziki and one honey mustard. Possibly the best dolma I've ever had. The rice was delicious, both types of chicken were moist and tasty, and I hear the gyro meat was good. My 3 yo seemed to like it, too. The hummus was smooth and came with an olive. Pita was warm, soft, and delicious. Falafel was perfectly crisp and tasty. I cannot wait to try more on their menu, or even just order when I want an actual hot meal prepared with care.

Yelp
Chicken schwarma was amazing. Highly recommend and I'll be back next time I'm in Seattle! 10/10

Yelp
The employees are especially friendly and good-natured, and the food is really good. Make sure to get some chai and lentil soup!

Yelp
Been coming to this great little place for years. Today my first time back since Covid. Boy am I glad I did. Got the exquisite Lamb and Beef Gyro. Brought tears to my eyes. Just perfect. Then the family owner gave me a complimentary cup of soup! Wow. I will buy a quart of this delicious stuff. Clean place, great service, sunny colors. All great. BroganfromSeattle

Yelp
I was running some errands in the area and decided to pick up lunch from here and I'm so glad I did. I called in for a pickup of a gyro plate about ten minutes ahead of time and by the time I walked in, the order was ready. And the owner is such a nice man! Everything was really really really tasty. The salad was refreshing. The lamb and beef gyro meat was delicious. The rice was delicious. The hummus was delicious. I'm absolutely going back to try the rest of the menu - the falafel looks good too and there's something called Somali spiced tea that I'm very curious about. Great tasting food and friendly service! Check this place out! It's not too far from the Columbia City light rail station.

Yelp
Heard this place was good but I was really surprised. The hummus was thin, lacked a depth of flavor and was extremely oily. The falafel was ok, but lacked any sort of fresh flavor. Was kind of shocked at the good reviews

Yelp
We ordered the Plate of Nations platter for $33. The cashier was very friendly and offered us water cups and complimentary lentil soup. The piping hot lentil soup was served with some seasoning on top. Very delicious! Next we received the appetizers including pita, hummus, stuffed grape leaves, and very light and fluffy falafel! Amazing! After that, we received the salads and main platter. The salads were not unusual, but the main platter was quite impressive. A fillet of perfectly seasoned fish was served over a generous bed of well seasoned rice. Chicken shawarma and gyros meat filled out the sides of the plate. A little cup of sauce was provided, and we loved it. The kitchen was hopping and service was friendly and welcoming. Although we ordered at the counter, each item was delivered to our table with a smile.

Shelby M.

Yelp
Everyone so friendly, food absolutely delicious, lentil soup, lamb, chicken and beef gyro's yummy and oh my goodness we were stealing the kids fries because they were good too.

Yelp
Fantastic gyros, wings, and chicken shawarma! They are always super helpful and even opened their doors when the were just about to close down for Ramadan.

Yelp
1. Clean well lit you can see in kitchen how you food is prepared with caring clean hands. The person handling the money is not preparing your food.i notice when someone leaves the table is clean immediately. No dish hanging around no dirty table and floor is kept clean of wetness or spills 2. Owner has invitingly warm smile and greet you on entry. 3..final test of cleanness check out bathroom. After observing aii the cleanness test we ordered the 2ea. falafel plates and had to ask for a small takeout for the samosa. The night person in our home saw it ate and I had to return again because her comment was "sorry I didn't know" but... it was REALLY good"! 4. Strongly recommend the falafel and samosa and end your meal with a Somali chai tea a warm ending to a delicious meal.

Yelp
One of my favorite local spots. It's mediterranean food and it's done very well. The owner is very friendly and professional.

Yelp
Did I order the wrong thing? Bananas Grill was a miss for me. $13 for a measly little gyro and a side of "Greek Fries" - Oily French fries with some feta and seasoning. I thought the beef and lamb gyro was very bland and dull. The picture of the chicken shawarma gyro looks a lot better and seems like a more bountiful portion. I've been on such a Mediterranean kick lately but this meal was a let down.
google avatar

Tara H.

Yelp
I ordered this place from a delivery food app and enjoyed the food a lot. This business is a black-owned business that is owned by a Seattle local. Their food is on the cheaper side as far as pricing and you get a good amount of food for what you pay. When I ordered from here, I got the chicken wings, chicken shawarma sandwich, and falafel. My favorite was the chicken shawarma sandwich, it had a lot of flavor and was super filling. Overall, I would eat here again when I'm in the mood for Mediterranean-type food.

Yelp
Okay... just okay... I was pretty disappointed after reading all of the great reviews! I ordered the beef/lamb gyro sandwich and it had 3 pieces of meat in it, barely any tzaziki sauce, barely any lettuce and it didn't have cucumbers or anything. The fries were good but the portion was extremely small, $12 for a lunch combo was a rip off. My friend is vegetarian she wanted the pita bread with the fries inside of it instead of the meat they told her they can't do that and charged it up as the lunch combo also. The establishment was clean, easy to find, limited parking. The cashier wasn't very friendly either. If you want a small snack this place may be good but not for lunch or dinner meals. They had more items on the menu the Hawaiian burger looked good so maybe they have some better choices. The portions are just a bit ridiculous.

Yelp
Perfectly prepared Mediterranean food with a slight twist in seasoning served by very friendly staff. Great place for comfort food. I took my daughter to the Beacon Cinema on Rainier Blvd, our plan was to eat Ethiopian at Alem before the movie. Unfortunately or (fortunately), we picked the one night they closed for some repairs. We found Bananas Grill on the web and walked uphill 10 mins from Rainier & Oregon. It was a beautiful night and the walk helped build up our appetites. I was a little surprised to find a Somali-owned Mediterranean restaurant, but it worked out great. The lentil soup is amazing, do not skip this. My daughter and ordered falafel sandwich and plate, and it was just really well-cooked: crunchy-crisp outside, warm and moist inside, same goes for the fries. I also ordered a Somalian spiced-tea, which tasted like chai with some extra spices, very good, just be sure to keep your drink stirred because the bottom collected a lot of those spices.

Yelp
Placed a large catering order for a group of over 30 people and everything went well on the day of. Delivery was great, despite our difficult-to-find location. Food was packaged such that everything was warm. They didn't give us utensils or napkins, but I also didn't [forgot to] ask. They have excellently creamy tahini-heavy hummus, which is the way I like it. People who like more lemony/chickpea-y hummus may find it less to their liking. Fries are kind of blah, but the dolmas are solid and the rice is great. Everyone liked the gyro meat and the falafel was good too. I didn't try any chicken, so I can't comment on it, but there was no complaints! The baklava was on the sweet side and didn't seem to have any pistachios, but it's their take on a dessert and it's solid. I appreciate that they individually wrapped every piece.

Yelp
How about some halal Mediterranean food? This spot in Columbia City hits the spot. They did a great job with social distancing as well, with tables far apart, and easy takeout parking spots in front of the restaurant. We ordered: - Lamb and beef gyro - Chicken shawarma plate - Greek fries Good flavor, nice portions, and they were generous with the feta on the fries. Go support a black-owned, family-owned restaurant!

Yelp
Bananas Grill doesn't get that much recognizing that it should. The lovely staff they have make it an enjoyable eat every time. I like to start off my meals with the Lentil soup that they have. Something about that soup keeps me wanting to come back. I recommend the chicken burger, it's a little messy but I love the fresh vegetables they use. ( lettuce , tomatoes ) A Top 5 South Seattle eats.
google avatar

Ly H.

Yelp
Family owned restaurant with friendly service and a simple menu with halal meats. I got the beef and lamb gyro plate which was delicious BUT I recommenced the chicken shawarma plate which is amazing. I usually prefer beef and lamb but the way the chicken is seasoned is so flavorful and mouth watering. The portion is great for the price and makes for a delightful take out meal. This spot is conveniently close the the Columbia city lightrail station and a kids park.

Yelp
On vacation, was only a mile up the street and I was craving Mediterranean food so I called them up for a gyro, they made it very quick and very good , fries were nice and evenly salted, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside Very nice I recommend to anyone for a quick bite Didn't get a drink however
google avatar

Yelp
I love it here! The gyros are great, the staff is fantastic and the lentil soup is delicious! Samboosas are a must as well. :)
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Simple, delicious halal food! I get the beef and lamb gyro plate that comes with pita triangles, seasoned rice, hummus, and tzatziki. This plate is about $12, but the portions are pretty generous. Bonus points for super nice folks running this place! Very close to the Light Link Rail Columbia City Station!
google avatar

Grace C.

Yelp
Gyro plate and strawberry smoothie. Includes hummus, flatbread, salad, rice, gyro meat. Yummm and owner was so kind, he gave me free lentil soup while I waited, and it was very tasty and comforting. Hospitality was excellent. I'll be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. I would have never found it if they didn't deliver to my house but once I'd tasted their unique flavor combinations I kept going back. Honestly, during the lock down I probably went once a week just to keep my sanity, and now they know me and when they see me are very friendly. The restaurant is run by a Somali family and they use unique spices in their Mediterranean food so it tastes different than other restaurants that have the same thing. I am such a big fan of their lentil soup that I oftentimes buy extra so I can have it at home. My dad loves their lamb-beef gyro. I'm all about their chicken shawarma. Ask for their "bananas fries" (it's off menu). They put their shawarma on fries (so much better than chili fries).
google avatar

Rebecca P.

Yelp
This is one of my regular go-to places for food. Their Somali take on Mediterranean food adds flavors you can't find other places. It is a small family owned business & they always greet you with a smile.
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
I am super-excited go have discovered this place. We got a few things, including their combination plate, hummus, samboosas (which I *think* is just another word for samosas), and a falafel sandwich, and everything was fresh and delicious. I can't wait to get another takeout from these folks.
google avatar

Yelp
Literally the best halal food in all of Seattle--I'm ready to fight anyone on this. My fiancé and I used to get food here about 3 times a week, but we had to pull back and order only every Friday. Now, Fridays are my favorite part of the week. The food is amazing. I always get the falafel sandwich, and it is so savory, tasty, and (what I love most) it's simple! Other falafel sandwiches from other places always like to add extra stuff that is NOT needed. This place doesn't. They add light shredded lettuce, some sauce, two halves of a slice of tomato, and three falafels aka, the perfect sandwich. Their hot sauce and white sauce is really, really good, and they're really generous. We have only been ordering with delivery, but they package everything so well that now we only order Halal food from Bananas Grill. My fiancé also feels the same way. The food is plentiful and tasty for the price. He swears by their hot wings and falafel burger. The hot wings are so spicy and they use a dry rub so the skin is crispy. The falafel burger tasted like meat! The falafel piece was larger than the bun so they made sure you got falafel in every bite. They definitely don't skimp on quality, taste, or quality. I definitely recommend Bananas Grill. They are just as good as the authenticate Halal food in New York from the carts. I have been to Falafel King in downtown, and you can rest assured that IT IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. 0/10 do not recommend. If you're looking for exceptional Halal food, Bananas Grill is it. Anyone who recommends Falafel King over Bananas Grill doesn't know food. Haha.
google avatar

S H.

Yelp
Great spot for a quick lunch or dinner. I love the lamb and beef gyro. The Somali spiced tea is also really good - it's like a chai bit spicier. Make sure you try the lentil soup and the Dolmas. If you eat in at the place, you sometimes get a complimentary mini lentil soup.
google avatar

Yelp
Yesterday was my first time there at around lunch time. I was greeted by the amazingly kind Fami (sorry if I am spelling it wrong). I love gyros and have enjoyed Mediterranean food all my adult life. Anyway, I ordered the scrumptious beef/lamb gyro combo that came with perfectly cooked fries and a side beverage (great value fyi). While my order was being made (totally fresh), Fami gave me a cup of their housemade lentil soup: OMG, SO GOOD! This place must be visited over and over again, I was that pleased. I also live in the neighborhood and highly recommend anyone to give this wonderful cafe a try, you'll be very blissed. Be well :-) Patrick

Yelp
they're chicken samosas were spoiled and rotten disgusting!!!! dont recommend at allll

Carl J.

Yelp
We used to live in the neighborhood and this was our go-to place. Moved out of the neighborhood but still order delivery. Best lentil soup I've ever. Love the fish plate, shawarma, falafel, really anything on the menu. Very friendly service.
google avatar

D. H.

Yelp
Service was great! They even treated us to a small helping of their lentil soup. We ordered the grill plates, side of falafel, and ended up taking a bowl of the soup to go.
google avatar

Monica Z.

Yelp
Accidentally stumbled upon this place, it was awesome! The falafel plate hit the spot. The falafel was so yummy and the fries very well seasoned. Service was great as well, definitely recommended!
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
the best restaurant in all of seattle!!! their chicken pita cheese melt is to die for. I moved away from the city and still drive 35 minutes to eat here! If you're thinking about trying Banana's Grill, just do it. You won't be sorry!
google avatar

Brandi C.

Yelp
I love their gyros and baklava here. The owners are really friendly and the ambiance is nice (quiet despite the MLK traffic that's just in front of the restaurant).
google avatar

Sophia H.

Yelp
They offer service during covid 19 quarantine. The food was so good and they indicated what food was vegetarian. Very fast friendly service, have a bathroom for washing hands, and they have limited inside seating. The Falafel tasted almost like meat the Falafel Plate had a good variety of food. The tzatziki sauce and fries is AMAZING. It was hard to stop eating it... almost rated it 5 stars, but I didn't like some stuff on the plate.
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
Loved this spot. My brother and I got takeout here and the food was delicious and reasonably priced. Portions are huge so good for sharing! Would definitely order the chicken shawarma plate again and the Somalian spiced tea was sweet and comforting.
google avatar

Zack D.

Yelp
Total rip-off. $16 the gyro entree and all I got was a few little tiny pieces of meat and HALF a pita. 3 little pieces of ice berg lettuce and barely enough hummus to fill a little cup. Definitely skip past this place.
google avatar

Matt C.

Yelp
Fantastic find! We had the lamb and beef gyro, cheeseburger and chicken burger. Fries, mango smoothies.. All great!
google avatar

Emily I.

Yelp
Bananas Grill is one of my favorite local spots in South Seattle. Steps away from the Columbia City light rail stop and the 106 bus stop, Bananas is fairly easy to get to by transit. There is some street parking available in the front along MLK, but I think there might be parking available behind the location in a shared lot. Bananas is a family owned business and they go the extra mile to remember their regulars and always greet you when you come in. Sometimes they are even offering samples of some of their homemade soups while you wait for your order (try it!). My go to order is either a gyro with meat (add falafel), or the falafel and hummus plate. Gyros are large, with just the right proportions of veggies, meat, and sauce. The falafel is always crispy and not too dry and perfect for dipping into the hummus. P.S. they also make this homemade spiced Somalian tea that is absolutely delicious. Perfect for the cool nights coming up!
google avatar

Daren D.

Yelp
Did I mention their own chai is frickin' awesome?! Super inexpensive ($1-something) AND for a 12 oz (?) cup! Git yer ass over here and try it. ...shoo!
google avatar

Rahma A.

Yelp
This Somali-family owned, Mediterranean restaurant is as good as it gets! The menu offers very simple, yet delicious halal meals. This is perfect for making your decision easier. From wraps of kebabs, chicken shawarma, to entrees and very rich appetizers it really varies. I recommend the Chicken Shawarma and the hummus Pita Bread appetizer. it comes with 2 hot and fresh falafels and these insanely delicious wraps! The price is very to my convenient also. Nothing expensive and the portion hits home. The environment is cozy, children friendly (there's a park right outside), and clean! The service is very good too!! even when working under fire or understaffed, this family will have your meal brought to you in no time! I recommend you hit this place up if you are ever around the area, looking for something both ethnic and comfort! P.S--Its close to Ambrosia so make room for boba if you're up for it because it is the best combo I promise!

Yelp
Bananas Grill is comfort food. There are even a good number of healthy items All reasonably priced....good poertiins....I could go on and all. Try the soup! And the pita is soft and warm!
