You know, even though the idea of a shop serving both boba and banh mi isn't all that new, I don't think I've ever come across one that's been able to do both well. Good banh mi and mediocre boba? Quite a few. Good boba with underwhelming banh mi? Plenty of those too. So, after hearing some good things about b&b and deciding to check them out, I was equal parts hopeful and skeptical about what they had to offer. Now, after having made several trips here? Yeah, you could say I've become quite a fan!
From the outside, b&b isn't much to look at...in a literal sense. I've always thought the likes of Saigon Sandwich and Que Huong are small, but b&b is even smaller - just enough space for one person to order and another to check out the menu. And boy is there a lot of good stuff to check out - about a half dozen types of banh mis with more Asian than pure Vietnamese flavors, a handful of rice bowls, and two dozen varieties of milk teas, coffees, fruit teas, and drinks. You can also order online directly with b&b, though, it doesn't seem like all of their options are on there.
-- BULGOGI BEEF BANH MI - Housemade, Cola Marinated Rib Eye, Gochujang Aioli, Kimchi, Pickled Carrots, Cilantro, Cucumbers, and Jalapeno...$10.75

I was super excited for this and it delivered! The beef was tender and packed with flavor. I also liked how there was just a bit of heat from the gochujang aioli and some sourness from the kimchi.
-- FIVE SPICED CHICKEN BANH MI - Housemade Five Spiced Roasted Chicken, B&B Special Soy, Pickled Carrots, Cilantro, Cucumbers, and Jalapenos...$10.25

Although this wasn't horrible, it wasn't very interesting either. The chicken was moist, and there was a good amount of it, but it needed more five spice and/or soy, as it felt like it was light on seasoning.
-- PORK BELLY BANH MI - Juicy, Slow Cooked Pork Belly, Garlic Mint Aioli, Pickled Carrots, Cilantro, Cucumbers, and Jalapenos...$10.50
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/b-and-b-banh-mi-and-boba-san-francisco?select=QpjuZL2z2DeMsJbQfAQTsg)
I was a little worried about how fatty this would be, but this was great! The pork belly was juicy, not super fatty, and oh so delicious, especially with the aioli! Would definitely get this again!
-- SLOW ROASTED PORK BANH MI - House-Roasted Pork, Garlic Mint Aioli, Pickled Carrots, Cilantro, Cucumbers, and Jalapenos...$10.50
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/b-and-b-banh-mi-and-boba-san-francisco?select=HEOX5d-6IAqPuWe-IG9p8A)
All in all, this was pretty solid, though it did have some flaws. While a couple of pieces of pork were a little dry, the marinade/sauce on it was flavorful and complemented well by the garlic mint aioli too!
-- B&B SPECIAL COMBO - House Roasted Pork, Fancy Pork Loaf, Head cheese, Pate, B&B Soy Sauce, Pickled Carrots, Cilantro, Cucumbers, and Jalapeno...$10.5
(https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/b-and-b-banh-mi-and-boba-san-francisco?select=rNW1q5i3v8MnbNwNT-bFLQ)
As a whole, this was wasn't too shabby - it had a lot of meat and slathered with pate. However, I couldn't taste much of the pork loaf nor the head cheese and some of the roast pork was also dry (though the pate helped).
-- BLACK MILK TEA - Loose Leaf Black Tea with Milk (50% sweet)...$5 (Regular)
(n/a)
Sorry, forgot to take a photo, but I can assure you that other folks have posted photos of it...and that it was pretty decent. The taste of the tea could've been stronger, but the sweetness and creaminess was just right.
-- HONG KONG MILK TEA - Black Tea with Sweetened Condensed Milk (50% sweet)...$5 (Regular)
The black tea tasted the same, but I thought the drink as a whole tasted better. Admittedly, the condensed milk tea has a lot to do with it, but I also liked how it reminded me of the milk teas I had as a kid.
-- STRAWBERRY MILK TEA - Black Milk Tea with Strawberry Puree (50% sweet)...$5 (Regular)
I think I found my new favorite milk tea! Impressively, the puree added a ton of flavor without overshadowing the black tea. Granted, it also added some sweetness, so 25% might be the way to go.
Compared to other banh mi joints out there, including my usual spots, b&b is undeniably more expensive, but you do get quite a bit of meat packed in and the rolls they use are terrific (so soft and crusty!). That said, I'm not sure all of them are worth coming back for (looking at you, Five Spiced Chicken Banh Mi) or if you're looking for a more traditional banh mi. For something different and the convenience of getting a delicious milk tea at the same place, though? I'll definitely be back!
