Do you like to eat crawling bugs in your food?
Sometimes you can get a nice person working there and get recommendations for the best ghee etc. And their refrigerated homemade desserts are really quite excellent. But sometimes the people can be curt and officious. I always took that as the gamble with coming here.
But on Friday night I bought two bags of rice, got home, poured one half out into my rice cooker, and saw that it was crawling with bugs - as was the other unopened bag. That's gross, sure, and probably something the health department should look into, but I've had it happen to me before at Armenian grocery stores, and while it's not incredibly rare, if you don't catch it, they breed in your cupboard and then you have to get moth traps and throw all of your food away as they get into literally everything.
So I brought the bags back first thing Sunday morning, and the person at the counter first asked if I had a receipt (it was labeled with the store's name), and then said that they don't give cash back, only exchanges. When I insisted on getting a refund (total of $6 for two bags), he told me that he was not authorized to do so, and asked me why I'd eaten half of the first bag (which I of course threw away once I poured it out and discovered the bugs). It was only after 10 minutes of me standing there that he finally gave me my $6 back and then literally tossed the grocery bag it came in back at me, as if I was a horrible person for returning the item they sold me with bugs in it.
I am so done with this place.
