The bread at Bánh Mì & Rolls Factory deserves a fan club - Review - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Like any good sandwich, it all starts with the bread. And when it comes to Vietnamese baguettes, you won’t find better than the ones at Bánh Mì & Rolls Factory. There are several locations around the Bay, but this one in the Excelsior is where the bread is baked fresh daily. Each baguette has the trademark texture of a slightly bubbly, crispy shell and an effortlessly airy chew. And if you’re lucky, you might get one still warm from the oven. The fillings lean classic, with a few lesser-seen ones like sardine and tomato or ham and cheese. Our move is the combo, stacked with headcheese and Vietnamese cold cuts, along with a hearty smear of pâté. It’s heavy on the bread, but the baguette deserves the attention. This small takeout counter is usually packed with people waiting for their orders, and regulars chatting or testing their luck on scratchers (which you can also grab here). That said, there can be a long wait, so we recommend ordering ahead online. Be sure to keep an eye out for specials, including bundles that come with a free bonus sandwich or a Vietnamese iced coffee. Just don’t be late to your pickup—timing is everything if you want that fresh baguette experience. Food Rundown Bánh Mì There are 14 options, but we always stick with the classic combo. Everything is layered generously, especially the pâté that would be great on its own. But no matter which one you get, you’re guaranteed a weighty, forearm-sized sandwich that you could easily split with someone else. PlayMute video credit: Patrick Wong Spring Rolls Standard in every way except for size. Each one is thick and sturdy enough to hand off during a relay race. Get the peanut sauce over the fish sauce one. photo credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong

Google
Tried Banh Mi & Rolls for the first time and it seriously hit the spot. I got the veggie banh mi and the lemongrass pork—both were loaded with flavor. The veggie one was crisp and fresh, and the lemongrass pork was tender, juicy, and packed with that savory-sweet lemongrass kick. We also had the Thai matcha green tea and an iced coffee. The matcha was creamy and just the right amount of sweet, and the iced coffee was bold and super smooth. Totally worth the caffeine overload. Great prices, fast service, freshly made rolls, large portions, and everything tasted super fresh. Definitely adding this to my regular lunch rotation!

Google
Very good Bahn Mi, excellent vegetarian options; they use shredded/marinated tofu and their bread is always fresh. Great meatball sandwiches too. Service is Ok; you have to order through a tablet but they will help out if you need. Not a sit down place; there’s a table outside but it’s best to take it to go.

Google
Good place to get a Banh Mi on the go, the place sells lotto and makes their rolls in house, you can buy the rolls also. There are a few seats if you want to eat your food after ordering.

Google
Ordered 2 banh mi thit nuong( grilled pork) Omg sooo saltyy!! I hope the workers taste the meat before selling to customers. No one in my family could eat it. I had to take most of the filling out but was still too salty. Grilled pork was all small crumb pieces. I loved the traditional combo banh mi though. So dissapointed this time 😢

Tianna Chen

Google
Their vegetarian bánh mì is unmatched. A solid choice if you want a savory and crispy experience.

Google
Food is really one of a kind. A great sandwich is $9 cash and with coffee or Boba it's $12. The place operates like a hole in the wall so don't expect anything but the food or lottery tickets if you're into that.

Google
Nice Vietnamese coffee ☕️ for the 1st try here. The owner’s friendly. The price for all is affordable for me. Note as new Vietnamese place for morning time.

Google
Best Banh Mi in the city. Their baguettes are insanely good.

Yelp
Good spot, tried the fish and tomatoes as well as the beef. I liked the fish more. Definitely will be back to try the pork sandwiches. Thai tea and coffee was good too.

Yelp
Super cute. Tons of options. Good value. It was smaller than I expected not sure if the "factory" is on site or somewhere else ‍ I think it's cool they have meal deals for sandwich+drink or multiple sandwiches. Bread was fresh and serving sizes were solid. Bonus points for having Vietnamese egg coffees They have little kiosks to order with if you're feeling antisocial which is always a plus for me though the staff was nice and imediately fixed my drink mistake.

Yelp
I called ahead on a Saturday for pick up. There's 1 person working so it took a few rings before she picked up. I had also called 30 minutes before closing the day before but no one answered so I didn't want to chance it by going there and not have it open. Got the #3 pork belly and the #14 pork rib banh mi's. $20.10 for 2 Banh mi's. They bake their own bread in house. One of the few that do in the city. The bread is bigger than the other Banh mi places and it was nice and crusty. Still, not as airy and crispy as in Vietnam. The #3 had equal parts of pork belly and fancy pork. I wasn't expecting fancy pork, I'd rather have more pork belly instead. The #14 comes with tender pork with the cartilage. If you like to eat cartilage then this Banh mi is for you. The pork was juicy too so it made the bread a bit soft. I'd like to try the combo and lemongrass pork next time.

Yelp
I tried to call ahead but no one answered. It looks like there is only 1 person working there. The bread is made in house and they have a nice crispy shell with soft pillowy inside. They bread here is slightly larger than other banh mi shops so the filling looks like it's lacking. However the flavor is there and it tastes authentic.

Yelp
Just a couple things to mention, I have only ever ordered for pickup and I highly recommend calling or ordering in advance. They get busy and parking is hard to find, so plan ahead. Banh Mi's and Rolls are their main focus, but they have they have iced drinks and smoothies. They sell Lotto, so there is a lot of people in and out for orders, food and lotto. I like the Banh Mi's, especially that the bread is fresh (soft inside, crunchy outside) and loaded with toppings. However I do find the sandwich to be kind of dry sometimes, so I add Sriracha when I get home. I love the spring rolls, because honestly I crave and love spring rolls. There is flavor to the peanut sauce and it makes for a nice refreshing lunch sometimes.

Yelp
Solid grab-and-go spot for banh mi! I always call to order and then pick up about 15 minutes later. Parking can be difficult in the area so be prepared to get dropped off or circle around for parking. I always get the #1 combo and it comes with the standard fare of banh mi filling--pate, Viet mayo, pickled carrots/radish, cilantro, jalapeño. I enjoy the kick from the jalapeños but if you have little kids who don't want spicy, you can ask them to leave out the jalapeños. Otherwise, solid no-frills banh mi spot that I've come back to time and time again!

Yelp
Haven't been this viet sandwiches shop for a year , I came this afternoon and ordered a turkey sandwich. Very disappointed!!! The bread is not crispy , the turkey tastes weird ! The coffee tastes bad !!!!! Although only $10 bucks , the viet sandwiches shop in stonetown is same price which is much better than here

Yelp
My go-to Banh Mi spot! I always call to place an order for pick up. They take Venmo as payment too. They do buy 4 get a large one for free or buy 3 and get a mini one for free. Parking is tough on this street so I always get dropped off to pick up. They make their bread instore and sometimes you can see them kneading the dough through the glass. The store is small though; usually there's uncles inside playing scratchers and there's no tables for sit down eating but it's a solid grab and go spot!

John L.

Yelp
Ordered 4 Bahn Mi, get one free. Sandwiches are decent esp for the price. Looks like they bake the bread there so it's fresh. Bread is an elongated narrower shape, baguette-ish. No or little seating. Most are take out orders. I'd return when in area
google avatar

Yelp
Really small shop and you can't actually eat here. Only to-go orders. Their bread seems fresh and slightly longer than your typical banh mi roll, but the amount of meat and veggies they include aren't proportional to the roll size. They also don't add shredded daikon (or maybe they purposely leave it out for the one I ordered). I had the lemon grass pork and it was tasty. I ended up adding extra cucumber and carrot that I had at home. Their sandwiches are good overall and I would consider ordering from here again.

Yelp
It was very hard to find parking around here. This was a busy area and there was a lot of double parking. I had to drive in and out of the lane to get around the stationary cars. Finally found a spot, walked over and got my banh mi fairly quickly on a Sunday at 1pm. Quick in and out, fast service! Everyone's order was to go! The gf liked her #5 and I enjoyed my #9. The bread was crunchy and the filling was savory. We got the regular sized banh mi's for $9 each. I didn't know about the bigger foot long version until later.

Yelp
The best Viet sandwich in the area, maybe counting all of SF, when unable to go to San Jose. One may order sandwiches in large or smaller baguettes. For only large baguette orders, buy 3 get a free drink or buy 4 get 1 free. Order and pay from the kiosks, where you may also customize your sandwiches. Unsure if may request leaving condiments outside. Located off hwy 101, and not too difficult to get to. Plenty of metered parking, well, maybe except lunch or dinnertime.

Yelp
My go-to at this local banh mi spot is the combo. It has assorted Vietnamese pork cold cuts and house-made pâté on a freshly baked, crispy, airy baguette. It's a big sandwich, and they don't skimp on the fillings. The deal is great too. Five regular banh mis for $36. Tip: call ahead for pickup orders as there's almost always a line inside. Also there's a slight discount if you pay with cash, Venmo, or Zelle.

Yelp
The jalapeños, hahaha, are no joke. They're hella spicy! I felt like a dragon, breathing out fire! We got the combo sandwich with a fried egg and it's pretty good! The layering is decent, but the sandwich itself was more moist and soft than I'd expected. Ooooo, their Vietnamese coffee is spiffing! It's not much of a place to sit and dine-in. I recommend taking it to-go and eat it at home or somewhere with a nicer scenery like a beach or a park!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered for pick up. Lemongrass chicken & combo. Shrimp & pork (char sui) spring roll. The size of the sandwich are long but not huge. Portions of meat inside is great. I like the bread wasn't too hard, outside crunch and inside soft. I like the combo more that the lemongrass, good cut size meat, not thick chunks or skimpy leftovers like some places does. My bf likes the lemongrass more. I think the lemongrass was waayyy too salty. The spring roll surprised me. Because I thought it would be grilled pork and not char sui pork. But it was still fine. My bf said shrimp size doesn't match the length, totally spaced out. The peanut sauce I liked a lot. I actually used the remaining sauce to dip with my combo sandwich.

Yelp
This location's bread is made fresh, and the owner takes pride in his work. The freshly made bread really makes the sandwich stand out. It is easy to order because they have a touch screen to order what you like, making things move faster. The friendly service you get from them is great and welcoming. It is a Small World location, and they have a few seats inside and out. But banh mi are to-go sandwiches.

Yelp
What a great deal! I haven't had a Banh mi this good in ages, and the size is generous. Heard that they make their bread in house and WOW it makes such a difference. This was delicious and I'll be back to try the other sandwich options. I got the combo and it was filled with all the goodness. This place is super clean and has an easy kiosk ordering system too. Food came out in 5 minutes and I came when they opened at 8am so no one else was there.
google avatar

Grace M.

Yelp
Bit of an odd spot which mainly catered to the scratchers and lottery playing crowd. Food came out quick and as expected, with a banh mi as expected. The jalapeño was actually spicy which tingled our tongues.
google avatar

Yelp
I was nit aware this place was so close to our house. It's not walkable but only 10 min drive. Easy online order for banh mi sammies and boba drink. Parking is challenging but if you order online, and brung a +1 then double parking is a breeze! Bbq pork , vermicelli shrimp rolls with choice of peanut or fish dipping sauce. What I like about this place is the menu have option for mayo or pate spread! Also option to remove jalapeños, cilantro, pickled carrots/ daikon. The sandwich is really big! Bread so soft and warm to touch. Drinks were not that exciting. Warning: drinks come with boba plus other jellies. It didn't state that in the menu but it was in avocado smoothie and Thai tea.

Yelp
Very good Banh Mi Rolls! I got the Five Spice Chicken and the Lemongrass Grilled Pork. Both very good! Nice crunchy rolls! If you don't like your food too salty, ask for "No BBQ Sauce"! I did that and my sandwiches are just right! Savory and Seasoned without it being overpowering. They currently have a "Buy 4, Get 1 Free Special", which is nice, which I will try next time! Great place to get your sandwiches! I prefer it over Subway.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice little Vietnamese deli and bakery. Makes their own bread on site and you can buy the just the bread Nice sandwich and coffee combo for the price

Yelp
I've stopped by twice now and have tried both their sandwiches and spring rolls, pretty content with each visit. Banh Mi - for starters the baguette is absolutely delicious! Not sure if they bake them in house or where they source them from, but they are really good! Not too crunchy of an outside, soft inside. They no longer do the mini size (as of October 2023) so the regular size is quite filling. I've only tried the 5 Spice Chicken and the meat is OK. Nothing extremely out of this world but seasoned well enough. I am knocking down some stars for the overall serving; they are very lite with filling the sandwich of their pickled veggies, jalapeños, cilantro and meat. Spring Rolls - Shrimp and pork is my go to! You get 2 long rolls filled pretty well with all the condiments. The peanut sauce, dipping sauce was extremely watery this last time around but nonetheless still yummy. Very spacious interior, there's some seating inside but almost always when I've gone and walked by, it's a grab and go kind of place. Staff is friendly, quick transaction so you're in and out. All in all I am giving a 3.8 rating for this place, rounding up to a 4 star instead of 3. Definitely will be returning and I do recommend this place to anyone in the area!
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
This place is a gem in the city. There aren't many places where you can get a banh mi for less than 10 bucks. It was delicious and pretty packed with ingredients as well. The Thai iced tea hit the spot right after finishing the sandwich. They also have a nice deal if you get a sandwich with the drink. Check this spot out if you're in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Hella good no complaints. Competes with places in the TL (SF) or SJ. Good deal for a combo with iced coffee which is also really good. Good sized Banh Mi too. Highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Yelp
Kinda surprised at the 3.5 star rating (I feel like I'm iffy about places under 4 stars). I live near the area and I'M SO GLAD I FINALLY DISCOVERED A GOOD BANH MI PLACE within 10 mins of where I live. There's another banh mi place just a few blocks away that has a higher rating than here but I like this place better. Banh mi - LONG and huge for the price. Stacked with meat. I was full about 3/4 of the way in. With a lot of banh mi places, I feel like I have to eat 1.5 sandwiches to feel full, but not here! My husband said it could use more mayo (I thought it was just fine) and my only gripe is that the veggies were just slightly wet so they don't carry that well if you plan on having it for lunch a bit later. I don't mind too much though and would happily order from here again! Like others said, the owner guy is so sweet. Also, if you get a sandwich, an iced coffee is just $3! What a steal! Not the best iced coffee, but for the price, it's good.

susan w.

Yelp
Sorry, not worth the trip for me. Saw a IG posting about this place & wanted to check it out. This place makes the bread here, & I would give it high marks for the crispy outside & fluffy inside textures, but the fillings were so skimpy! Our sandwiches were $9.00 ea, but I got their combo offer for $12, which gave me a sandwich & an ice coffee. The coffee was ok. Wish I was happier w/our sandwiches. For just about $2.00 ($5.50 ea) more, I could've gotten 2 sandwiches from Saigon Sandwiches with much more tasty fillings than what I got here. I also ordered a shrimp & pork spring roll, but when we were eating it, saw that it was only shrimp. If you pay with cash, you get a discount, but honestly, take your cash to Saigon Sandwiches & get better sandwiches for less money....IMHO
google avatar

Sergei S.

Yelp
this is the best banh Mi sandwiches in San Francisco go there every day my favorite is lemon grass pork, but they are very good how they recommend it

Wilson D.

Yelp
The sandwiches were excellent watch out for the Thai chili. That is really a burner. Parking is not that easy only street parking. Definitely order ahead of time and go with a party of two by one wait in the car the other one can get the food.
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
Heard a lot from the family that this was a decent spot that popped up on San Bruno. I love that there is a way to order ahead, in store on a touch screen, and with an actual person. Plenty of payment options too! There's a buy 4 get 1 free option and other similar packages. Ordered 5 sandwiches and 2 Vietnamese coffees. The banh mi were made pretty quick (15-20mins considering there were 3 orders ahead of me). The coffee is strong and I'd recommend getting it if you wanted a pick me up and you're nearby, the combination banh mi on the other hand was mid. There was not much flavor, a few pieces of meat and no pate. Or maybe I just had high expectations?
google avatar

Becky V.

Yelp
Impressed with the bread, so crunchy! Nice quality. It's a small store, so you can order and wait outside. There's a $11 meal set, includes banh mi and one drink (such as Thai tea). The long banh mi is $8, and mini sandwich size are $6. I always get the bigger size!
google avatar

Tomes G.

Yelp
Good lord what good banh mi. Bread so fresh and thin crispy outside but fresh and spongy just under. We ordered lemongrass pork with extra meat and the extra did not disappoint. Spring roll was also fantastic. Price for how much food you get was reasonable. Vietnamese ice coffee had a pay extra $1.50 for less ice (and more coffee) which: YES! So good.
google avatar

Kristen S.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite banh mi sandwiches in the Bay Area! I've tried a few different variations here: Combo - thumbs up. I've ordered it half a dozen times and it's consistently good. Ham & head cheese - thumbs up. It's a tie with combo. Pork rib - thumbs up. Served warm. Juicy pork rib...very tasty. Five spice chicken - Meh, I've had better. But I'd eat it if I were starving. Lemongrass grilled pork - don't do it. Dry dry dry pork. The only thing I found disappointing on the menu. I'd rather starve. The bread is always perfect!
google avatar

Yelp
Combo Pork ($9): first time here and not my last! This was so loaded and tasted so good with a fried egg. It was a pretty long sandwich too haha it was so filling.
google avatar

Lyda L.

Yelp
Okay yum! First time ordering through grubhub from this spot and my chicken sandwich was delicious. Also ordered the shrimp spring roll but haven't eaten it yet so can't comment on it. But I'm super impressed with their banh mi. Glad I found this spot. And it's affordable!

Janice T.

Yelp
Very delicious, my favorite is fried tofu sandwich! Friendly staff. Phone order is easy but cash only.
google avatar

Chang T.

Yelp
Best Thai sandwich in town. There bread is spool fresh and delicious with it's crunchy exterior and soft inside. The bear is made in the back. We got 4 sandwich and they were all pretty good. My fav was the lemongrass pork. Beware of their jalapeno. They are spicy and fresh. I love it but for normal ppl it will be a big kick. The service was good. Busy but we got our order in 10 minutes. The store is located on the main street. The inside was ok in size but it was more comfy to make your order and walk around the street while we waited.
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
These people are quick and no frills. Absolutely love the banh mi here. It's fresh, tasty, and hefty, and the bread doesn't hurt the inside of my mouth. The combo banh mi is only $8. Call in 10 mins before you pick up for optimal wait time efficiency. They are cash only, so be aware of that. They carry some drinks in the fridge next to the counter too. A huge plus -- they were open on both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day for 2022-2023!

Stewie G.

Yelp
The girl working there called out my name loudly even though it wasn't even loud. I was already expecting my order because of the text notification.
google avatar

Otto E.

Yelp
Fresh crunchy sandwich with a variety of delicious selections, a hop in and out for the quick bite, highly recommended
google avatar

Leo H.

Yelp
Their food is okay and they give you a lot of portions as they give you spring rolls for free. I got the shrimp and beef spring rolls with a banh mi sandwich. Really cheap so good place if you need to grab and go for work. Their service was great as they helped me pick their favorites choices It's a small little shop and no where to sit down. Not much ambiance and not many places to take picture but with the grab and go style it fit right in.

Kelli M.

Yelp
Always fresh with the taste of sweet and spicy flavored pork meat in the sandwich and they are not expensive. And they are very friendly!
google avatar

Ryan H.

Yelp
Just okay, nothing too special. Order the full size pork belly, and full size beef Bahn Mi's. The Pork belly was very nice, just not enough meat on the roll. With the beef, it was more like a roast beef sandwich. Inside the restaurant is pretty basic, nothing too high brow. Service was okay, due to other customers ahead of me with large orders. Would i go again? Maybe, but it'll have to be for a good reason
google avatar

H N.

Yelp
Quality, price and service was great here! Front clerk was nice and attentive. Ordered in person for my own meal to see the taste which was pretty good for their Lemongrass beef and combined Bahn mi as well as their Vietnamese Iced Coffee. Not too bitter and not overly sweet. After consuming my first sandwich decided to order 12 banh mi's and 10 Vietnamese Iced Coffee using 1 of 2 of their tablets. I'm surprised how fast they make it. Definitely will come back.
google avatar

Khamfong N.

Yelp
They moved to a new location. across the street near the Avenue Theatre. So much better, delicious fresh banh mi and they good deal too

Johnny L.

Yelp
I ordered from Banh Mi & Rolls a week ago and had to come back for more! You order via Snackpass kiosks or you can order on the app. They have amazing Banh Mi's! I get the #1 and also got their Banh Mi and drink combo -- I got a Thai Tea. Their thai tea is good, not super sweet! The bread the banh mi is on is crunchy on the outside and super soft and fluffy on the inside! 10/10 recommend would definitely come back!
google avatar

Benson W.

Yelp
Ordered through Grubhub for $7.60 for a full pork banh mi and honestly pretty disappointing. Lacking in so much meat and veggies for a banh mi set at this price. There's more pate than there is pork which ends up overpowering the taste of the pork. Not sure which type of pork they used but it was hard and not juicy at all. Maybe like 1/16th of a jalapeño and 3 pieces of cilantro.... cmon man!! You can see how "thick" the banh mi is from my pictures!! Also came in 10 minutes before my estimated pick up time and my meat was cold. Only came to try this place out as I live in this neighborhood and I can still say, food on san bruno ave is still not good after over 15 years of trying food on this ave. If you did want banh mi in this neighborhood, I believe banh mi house on bacon was a little better but i wouldn't come out of my way for a banh mi in this area. Seems to be why there's been so many different shops over the years.
google avatar

Ariel L.

Yelp
Not a Vietnamese sandwich place. Expensive asf. Better off getting subway for cheaper. I got #11, beef and it comes with roast beef. There is no mention of roast beef on the menu and the picture shows actual beef in the sandwiches. They are also hella dry and no filling. A sandwich you can get at subway and a drink for $12 is crazy. Esp when you can get a true and authentic Vietnamese sandwich in downtown for 1/3 of the price. The bread is hard and rough, not toasted at all and probably been sitting there for awhile. Their matcha green Thai tea was alright but not anything special. 75% of it was ice.

Yelp
OK. I'm going to show my age here! I discovered Banh Mi when I was 10 years old. I went to Jean Parker elementary school near Chinatown SF. After school,, My friends and I discovered "Vietnamese Sandwiches" for $1.25 at a shop on Stockton St. near the tunnel. This was a treat with a can of Coke for $.50 cents! The first time I ate the sandwich , I said, "Ewww there's carrots inside!!!" I took them out! 30+ years later, I love coming to this shop in the Portola neighborhood of SF and I no longer take the carrots out! Guess you can say it helps me, "Eat your Vegetables." Sandwich: $6.50 Spring Roll: $6.25
