The 38 Best Restaurants in Boston | Eater Boston

"This is the crown jewel of Dorchester’s noteworthy Vietnamese dining scene. Banh Mi Ba Le is a combination market and takeout restaurant; there are a few seats, but it’s best to get your food to go and eat it elsewhere, such as at the nearby Robert E. Ryan playground, weather permitting. And it’s best known for its grilled beef banh mi. The bread, which is baked in-house, is both shockingly crispy and pillowy, packed with fresh vegetables and sweet, charred strips of beef. There are few better sandwiches in the city, or anywhere. Insider tip: Wash the sandwich down with some passionfruit juice, and get some Vietnamese pantry staples from the market while you’re there." - Erika Adams

Essential Boston Restaurants Open for Takeout/Delivery During COVID-19 | Eater Boston

"One of the most well-known restaurants in Dorchester’s extraordinary Vietnamese food scene, Banh Mi Ba Le is currently open for phone orders only, and customers must pick up their orders from the window — no one can go inside. The selection may be limited, but if available, get the grilled beef banh mi. Order takeout: (617) 265-7171" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

17 Best Cheap Date Restaurants in Boston | Eater Boston

"Dorchester Avenue is bursting with good Vietnamese food, and you should eat at all of the restaurants dishing it out. Banh Mi Ba Le is a good place to start. Head there for, you guessed it, banh mi. This market and sandwich shop is short on seating — there’s only one table (at least for now, but expansion is coming) — so get the banh mi to go, and head toward the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum for yet another very Boston first date." - Terrence Doyle

The place was inside the building of the grocery store. We got two smoothies, three bah mi sandwiches and a pack of fresh rolls to go. It was a bit busy with a line but the line went quickly. Great sandwiches packed with flavor, drinks were also decent and affordable

Google
Affordable and authentic Vietnamese fast food eatery that saves us north of Boston peeps from having to take a trip into the city to go to Chinatown. They have all the types of banh mi you could imagine (I had the BBQ pork) and a lot of other prepared Vietnamese main dishes and appetizers. They also have desserts and boba teas and smoothies and some of the best Vietnamese iced coffee around. $12 for a sandwich and large iced coffee!

I absolutely love this place. I’ve been coming here for years, first to the original Dorchester location and now to this one right near my mom’s house (Malden out post). It’s become a must-visit every time I’m home. The food is consistent, flavorful, and such a good value (especially compared to what you’d pay in NYC for infused viet sandwiches). They bake their own bread in house! What really stands out, though, is the customer service. Auntie Lien has worked with the brand for 30 years, and you can feel that care in how she treats everyone who walks in. She makes me feel like I’m coming home, which is something I really look forward to. And she always tolerates my broken Vietnamese with such grace, lol. Highly recommend if you’re in the area. Great food—Vietnamese sandwiches, desserts, soups, and other classic Viet specialties. Kind people, and a rare kind of warmth that’s hard to find. (Just a heads up, it’s in a food court, so don’t expect anything fancy.)

This place is incredible. I’m so happy I found it. Best Vietnamese spot I’ve been to in New England and the prices are great. I’m excited to go back and try some different dishes. Loved the chicken pho, Bahn mi and shrimp rolls. Felt like I was back in Vietnam. What a gem 💎

Google
This is a great place for bahn mi. Wonderful bread, fresh vegetables, tasty meats. All for a very reasonable price. I also had the shrimp spring rolls, which were solid. They have an overwhelming assortment of other prepared foods there too. It’s located inside the Asian supermarket, and the eat-in tables there are a little dreary. But I think the food makes up for the atmosphere.

Google
Ba Le serves the most delicious Vietnamese food and I'm so happy they have another location. There's a number of tables to eat at, and the lines move fast. You order drinks and food at separate lines, and their bahn mi is made fresh. Would definitely come back!

Google
Banh Mi Ba Le is undoubtedly one of the best places for banh mi! I highly recommend their new location in Malden. The sandwiches are not only delicious but also served quickly and at a great price. Everything about this banh mi is immaculate—the flavors are rich, the ingredients fresh, and the overall quality outstanding. This spot has a well-deserved reputation, and it definitely lives up to the hype. If you're a fan of banh mi, you can't go wrong here!

Google
Line moves very fast. They have like 4 ppl working behind the counter (1 cashier, 2 making sandwiches/packing food, and 1 making drinks), during weekend lunch time at least. Since it is located at the supermarket, there are some chairs and table if you want to eat there. Plenty of parking available as well at the lot.

Yelp
My go-to Friday lunch spot and the most delicious Vietnamese food I've had in Boston! So glad I've discovered this hidden gem per recommendation from a friend. The menu is quite expansive with lots of options depending on what you're in the mood for - I usually order either a Banh Mi Dac Biet or Banh Mi BBQ Pork with an order Banh Bot Loc (tapioca dumplings). The staff is very welcoming and friendly, and there are tables inside to eat at once you've picked up your food.

Yelp
Ba le is a franchise Vietnamese bánh mì shop. I am glad that they open a new location near my place. This location located inside 99 ranch market's food court. Usually, ppl buy foods here to go. But you can seat at the food court if want. There is no servers, self serve service. They offer authentic Vietnamese bánh mì and other việt dishes. The quality of bánh mì in ba Le always consistent and their pate tasted amazing However, avocado smoothie here is sadly a no. Very bitter and too sweet at the same time. I think the one in Dorchester location is better.

Yelp
This is one of the best places in Boston for all things Vietnamese I Particularly love the Cold Cut Banh Mi and their take on the Beef Lo Mein also their spring Rolls my one gripe is all their meat Banh Mi are served cold. Next time Ill ask if they can heat up the meat.

Yelp
I'm glad they opened up a closer location to me because I love Banh Mi Ba Le. It's smaller than their Dorchester location, however they still have banh mi, and a good amount of other Vietnamese food. Banh mi is $6-7 and I always get a few whenever I come. My favorite is the thịt nướng (#2). I also got xôi (Vietnamese sticky rice) which was good. The workers are fast at making the banh mi too. A great cheap meal option! Still my favorite banh mi location that I've ever had. It's located inside 99 Asian Market's food court and there's plenty of parking in the plaza.

Yelp
Haven't been to them since they changed to this location but I was happy to find them again. Their fans have also followed as there was a long line on a Tuesday around 12. We got to try their traditional and BBQ pork banh mi sandwiches and a combination order of spring rolls. I almost think the sandwiches are slightly larger than they were before and prices were very good coming out to less than $20 in total. Quality was consistent so I will certainly be coming back for more! My favorite spring roll was definitely the one with the sweet pork so get that if you can.

Yelp
Be careful! They charged three times more on my coffee without noticing. I ordered a coffee with bubbles and no ice. It is $4 (coffee) on the menu but I was charged $12. The man didn't mention the charge at the payment and they didn't give receipt. I feel strange so I asked for receipt and found out it was three times higher. I complained that their employees didn't tell me the cost was three times when I ordered and they didn't list it on the menu. They said the employee is new and she didn't know that, and they expect everyone should know that no ice is higher cost. I was like WHAT?! I expected no ice may be a bit higher but not triple! Also, your employee didn't know that and you expected I should know the price? It is cheating!

Yelp
Smaller selection than the location in Dorchester but does have all the greatest hits. Banh mi sandwiches, drinks, prepared vermicelli bowls, summer rolls, egg rolls, tofu stir fry noodles etc. wish they offered the rice plates but still a good selection. Line wasn't too long on a Sunday afternoon, we were in and out under 10 minutes. I got a couple packages of the summer rolls and felt it wasn't as fresh as the location in Dorchester. They leave it out for you to grab. The wrapping on the summer rolls were a little dry. We also got the tofu noodles and a couple coffee smoothies. Relatively inexpensive. Would stop in if I'm in the area but wouldn't make the trip otherwise.

Yelp
Spicy beef banh mi and Vietnamese iced coffee is my go to order. Coffee is strong and sweet

Yelp
Banh Mi Ba Le is finally here in Malden! And it's well worth the wait! It's super busy around lunch time and on weekends especially. But even with the long line, it's a fast move as they've brought over original employees from the original Dorchester location who have made banh mi for years and years. There's a lot of variet of Vietnamese classics from banh mi, to Che, to fresh spring rolls and egg rolls. At less than $7 with tax included, it's so much value!! The Dac viet is always my go to and it's always filled with the brim and nicely layered to ensure every bite is filled with a little bit of everything. The perfect lunch option if you're in the area! The baguettes are made freshly daily at this location and you can really taste the freshness of the airy bread. For less than $10 you can't really beat this whether you're on the go or looking for a quick lunch break!

Yelp
When you see a trash bag full of rolls, you know they're doing VOLUME. Cold cuts banh mi ($6.07+tax) was quite tasty! Fillings were great, but a bit lopsided, and could have used a bit more sauce or cilantro. Nice size and price though, definitely worth stopping by if you're at the supermarket!
google avatar

Yelp
Really good banh mi! The baguettes here are baked fresh daily throughout the day unlike most other banh mi shops. I really like that i can easily taste the quality and freshness of the bread whenever i stop by here. The bread consistently has a nice thin outer crisp and a soft chewy airy middle. My go to sandwich here is the dac biet cold cut banh mi (item #1 on their menu). It never disappoints, very reasonably priced ($6), and hits the spot every single time.

Yelp
Incredible food and service - as always. A tip for anyone looking to get food here: sometimes where the line starts and separates between difference styles of orders is unclear (there aren't any guiding signs), often times the line starts right at the cash registers and bends around the serving area.

Yelp
This was my little home away from. Yummy Vietnamese food was far and spread out in the east coast so when I found this gem living in Cambridge - I had to make the trek every single few weeks. I was so happy when I moved to Jamaica plain because the distance was way closer ! The only con of this place is parking if you're coming by car. If you're looking crispy on the outside but soft in the inside tasty banh mi - this is the place. They also have a wide range of traditional Vietnamese family dishes for lunch and breakfast :) their house mayo butter also amazing - I always bought an extra jar home. also delicious pastries dessert and savory snacks ! Which I recommend all of it because I've tried most of it. One of my favorites is banh Tran tron - it's mixed rice paper with mango quail eggs basil beef jerky and a delicious tangy sauce

Yelp
I was so excited to finally give this place a try since I shop here often in the market. I waited in line patiently until it was my turn. The guy in front of me was finally up and ordered 3 sandwiches. All I wanted was the spring rolls which were already done out front. A guy went up to cut me and spoke in Vietnamese to tell her what he wanted while ringing the guy up that was a head of me. Instead of telling him to wait until I get served, she took his order over me. I hope it's not because he's also Vietnamese speaking in each other's language to hook him by cutting me which is how I felt. It's truly disrespectful to customers that aren't Vietnamese. It's disrespectful in general. I definitely won't be returning and letting people know expect to be treated secondary if not of same race. Not worth the trouble especially Malden and surrounding towns has plenty other places.

Yelp
If you know Banh Mi in MA then you know Ba Le. Their expansion to the north shore has been long overdue. Same great recipes as their Dorchester and Quincy locations. The fried egg rolls and packaged summer rolls are worth it.

Vicki L.

Yelp
This new Ba Le is definitely either better or as good as the Dorchester standalone one. I've tried the Quincy Ba Le in the Kaman market and it was lackluster, almost not worth trying but this Malden one is almost as good as it gets. It's inside the 99 Asian supermarket, plenty of parking, there's even tables to sit at. The bread is the freshest I've had in so many years, the filling is adequate and flavorful. The best aioli and pate is perfect. I'm so excited to have something up here in Malden and hopeful quality holds up in the years to come!

Yelp
Great Vietnamese sandwiches with a selection of meats to choose from including traditional. Also drinks including iced Vietnamese coffee, smoothies and iced tea. Also some pre made pastries and other dishes like rolls.

Yelp
Stumbled across this little gem while looking for some loose green tea in the Asian 99 Supermarket, which is extremely hard to find. I found the green tea AND was overjoyed to find this little place which is full of AUTHENTIC Vietnamese food that is even more difficult to find in New England, especially without the inflated tourist-markup. If you're curious about REAL Vietnamese food not the usual ubiquitous (and mostly half-assed) "pho" a.k.a. rice noodle soup, come here and just sample all the ready-to-eat things they have on offer. The "banh mi" VN sandwiches are legit and decently priced ($6-7 not some asinine $10-15 like in the pseudo "Vietnamese" places), as are the various sticky rice dishes, some of which are wrapped in banana leaves. I was especially amazed that they even have "banh cuon" which I had never seen outside of Houston, the Bay Area, or SoCal before---google it if you've never heard of it, but it's quite delicious. Of course, most of the foods here are carby as hell, but that's pretty much the rule with East Asian food in general, so you probably want to get a couple of meat sticks to go with your meal unless you were planning to have a nice little siesta thereafter...or if you're vegetarian, plan to have some strong coffee afterwards. :) Note: this place is open only until 7pm every day except Wednesday, when they are closed.

Landon S.

Yelp
They make great vietnamese subs, spring rolls, vietnamese noodles dishes, Boba drinks, and they also carry beef stew.

Mercedes H.

Yelp
Staff is very nice. Had my first Banh MI and it was delicious! There are so many other things I want to try there and looking forward to going back.

Kay T.

Yelp
Been here a handful of times to get sandwiches since they've opened. 4/5 times I've been here, my takeout order has been wrong. I don't understand how what I ordered turns out to be someone else's order when they're packaging it right in my face. The last two times I'm missing 1 sandwich. Of course I wouldn't know until I get home which is 30 minutes away. Ugh. I get that they are extremely busy but they need a better system and I blame it on some of the customers that just bypassed the next person in line as if no one else is in line which can also throw off the checkout service order. Trust but verify. Today, my order went to someone else and they had to remake my 4 sandwiches. Which I only received 3/4.
