A Dozen Places to Find Delightfully Chewy Mochi Desserts Around D.C. | Eater DC

"Banh bo are leavened rice flour sweets usually flavored with coconut milk. They are cooked by steaming, and have a slightly boozy flavor due to the yeast byproducts. Google
Ordered a combo and grilled pork banh mi for takeaway along with some summer rolls. Both sandwiches were delicious but the grilled pork one was a standout. As for the rolls they were below average in my opinion and not something I’d purchase again. I would make a return visit though to see what their other sandwiches are like.

Google
I had banh mi for lunch at just $7.25. The bread was light and crispy, and the filling had a distinctly local flavor—though the meat did taste a bit like canned meat. That might not be for everyone, but I actually enjoyed the authentic feel of it.

Google
Very very very good banh mi. Some of the best I’ve had. Bread is soft, crunchy and chewy. Meats are well seasoned. Would definitely recommend

We came across this place on a random Saturday and as soon as we got there, we knew this is legit! We got the combo, grilled pork and grilled meatballs banh mi, as well as passion fruit with salty plum drink and IT WAS SO GOOOOD. Esp the drink! I dreamt about it all week that i had to get it again haha will definitely come back.

Google
The bread here is light, airy, with the perfect crisp. I got their Banh Mi Dac Biet and that was tasty with well balanced veggies, mayo, and pate spread. I also got the appetizers: Banh Gio and Bot Chien (already prepared) that were good to try and bring back to our hotel for a snack later. The store itself was hectic with a Vietnamese man cutting lines (actually yelling at each other) and not knowing the clear lines between ordering and many people picking up at the next lane over. It felt like it could be a fight scene at a Walmart.

Google
This establishment offers a delicious grilled pork sandwich that keeps us returning for more. During our most recent visit, we also sampled other menu items alongside the Banh Mi and were pleased with them. The Vietnamese coffee was particularly robust, just the way we prefer it.

Google
I order the Banh Mi Dac Biet (#1 on the menu) every time and it’s so delicious! the sandwiches are authentic too!

Google
Everything is excellent. I always make it a point to visit this wonderful place when I am in the area. The rolls are great, the Banh Mi sandwiches are great. I stock up to take things home. This a a hidden gem in Northern Virginia.

Yelp
As someone who has eaten a ton of banh mi because...they're Vietnamese, this place is one of the better ones I've tried in the DMV! The service is crazy fast, like it's ready 2 minutes after you order. I speak both Viet and English- so I understood but sometimes they will call the order numbers in Vietnamese so you've just got to be on the ball when you're listening for your order. Know what you want before you get to the counter because they're speedy and want to keep it moving. They have a little grocery section, hot bar and pre-made Viet dishes to try as well in addition to the banh mi. Its pretty common at Viet shops to buy some banh mi (usually 5) and get one free- you can ask for the toppings on the side so they keep better in the fridge for a few days and warm them up without wilting the veggies. The pate so (puff pastry with pork) is one of the best in the area, super flavorful and delightfully crisp. It's busy and Viet certified!

Yelp
BLUF: the banh mi is pretty good, but I just don't get the hype I returned here after a bad service experience the first time, because I had been told the banh mi was great. So I picked up a combo, a bbq pork, a steak, and a vegetarian banh mi. I shared them with 4 others. The result? they are tasty, but I just don't think they are as great as the hype. The are a good banh mi, not great. Worth the trip? Yes (assuming they have bread, see my earlier post on this), because it's a decent banh mi at a fair price for the location. I think they are a bit stingy on the pickled vegetable topping and don't do a good job of spreading the filling across the entire bread loaf.
google avatar

Yelp
Flavor-wise, Banh Mi DC hits the mark--classic, well-seasoned, and satisfying. But the baguette? Way too crusty in a dangerous kind of way. I always leave with tasty memories and a scratched-up mouth. Also, the fillings are a bit on the light side--not quite the stuffed-to-the-brim experience I'm looking for. Still decent if you're nearby, but not my first pick in the great bánh mì battle.

Yelp
Located next to Pho 75, Banh Mi DC is must stop for delicious excellent egg rolls. It's also a must stop for inexpensive and good sandwiches. They bake their own bread here, so there is always the pleasant aroma of fresh bread in the store. Because the egg rolls are so popular, Banh Mi might be out of egg rolls from time to time. Banh Mi also offers several prepackaged items and groceries as well.

Yelp
Very good. I feel as though the bahn mi isn't always consistent, but when they *do* get it right, they really knock it out of the park. Today I ordered at the counter (just after 11), and it was ready extremely quickly. There was no queue at all. Perhaps they are better at the start of the day, or when there isn't a mad rush. It definitely gets busy around noon. Wish they were this good up in Portland.

Yelp
FOOD We ordered their banh tieu and banh bo hap. You really have to catch them right when their banh tieu are fresh for hot, crisp taste, but we sadly came in an off hour. Still delicious, just not the same. The banh bo hap wasn't too sweet but was well-flavored. It paired well with the banh tieu. SERVICE The staff are kind and friendly! We were in and out within 5-10 minutes. AMBIANCE Beyond Eden Center, Banh Mi DC is the best place to grab-and-go Vietnamese food in the NOVA area. PARKING Ample parking is available at the lot by the store.
google avatar

Elina Y.

Yelp
Still one of my favorite places to get banh mi, despite price increases. I can always rely on them to make it with consistent quality and accuracy. Their bread is still my top fav as well, fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. Two thumbs up.

Yelp
This place has improved a lot in recent years. Their banh mi is considered one of the best in the area! Buy 10 get one free. We usually get Banh Mi Dac Biet. Make sure to check if they gave you veggies because one time they forgot. Also, when you place a large order, they would tend to give part of your order to the small order group to help with the wait while you have to stand there for a while even though you ordered first. They should put a bench for those who wait for their orders because there are a lot of elderly people and the line can be crowded. Overall, staff is okay, food is good, plenty of parking. Service could be faster.

Yelp
The mayo. And the price, size, and satisfaction of the perfectly harmonized flavors = perfection.

Yelp
Fast service and an excellent combination sandwich. Also enjoyed the side order of spring rolls.
google avatar

Yelp
The place doesn't look like much but the banh mi sandwiches are pretty good! Reasonably priced as well. Service is a bit lacking honestly, they forgot a few items in our order and did not really have a customer oriented manner.

Yelp
I've passed this place for many years now, but never during a lunch hour. I happened to be close by, it was lunch, and so opportunity presented itself. Small but ample parking in the immediate vicinity. Went before the crazy lunch crowd, long line started forming being us. Ordered a few sandwiches and drinks. Great price, paid ~$13 for a sandwich and drink. Felt full enough. Quality was on point. Drink and boba tasted fresh. Sandwich preparation/packaging was on point. Had a custom order and food came out accurate. Wait time didn't seem unusual. I paid cash, but saw they surcharge .35 cents (?) for every $10 for CC users. I would definitely come back here if I'm in the area and in the mood for something quick, cheap, and tasty!

Yelp
Banh Mi DC is probably the most well known banh mi spot in Nova and I finally stopped by last Sunday for lunch. This restaurant is also a grocery store so you order your banh mi and take it to go -- nowhere to sit, unfortunately. The pricing is pretty fair and the group I came with mainly got banh mis. I got the Banh Mi Dac Biet which comes with three different meats. Pretty solid banh mi! The baguette was so good and the meats were well seasoned and flavorful. I also enjoyed the pickled vegetables. For 7.25, this is a solid price for a casual meal. My only quip is that the bread to ingredients ratio was too high but at least the bread is good! A couple of my friends loved the banh mi and said they could inhale another one for dinner and lunch the next day. I also tried the sugarcane juice for 6.50. A bit steep for what it is and they definitely mixed it with other fruits and juices. Unfortunately, not my favorite but at least it wasn't too sweet.

Yelp
Bánh Mì here has always been one of the famous banh mi place here in the DMV area. They have a large variety choice of banh mi for vegetarians AND non vegetarian along with some street foods and some dessert. Bánh tiêu and bánh cam and bánh bao here is delicious. My fav place to get bánh tiêu as it is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They tends to get busy in the morning so there is a long line but if you go on friday afternoon there is no line.
google avatar

Desdemona P.

Yelp
I get the tofu bahn mi. The place seems to have gone down in quality. The bread is sometimes stale and they hardly put any mayonnaise on it. Plus you have to watch Fox News as you wait for your order. I need to find a better place to get veggie bahn mi.
google avatar

Terry L.

Yelp
Whew......please get the grilled pork banh mi sandwich and order another one for me. Flavorful, crispy, fresh, savory - this is the real deal. A lot of other banh mi sandwich options too including bbq pork, bologna, bacon, veggie, and others. The store is easy to navigate, clean, has many cult fave snacks (Cafe du Monde coffee?! Any Haribo candy you can think of!) and quick service. Great for a Friday dinner pickup or a weekday lunch.
google avatar

Megan M.

Yelp
The move is to order ahead! It's always packed but also efficient. I always get the grilled pork and it satisfies like no other banh mi place. The prices are super cheap for what you get so definitely order multiples!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Very authentic store with very good bahn mi and bahn baos. Service is very quick and they have several people making sandwiches quickly. The store also have some to go foods as well.
google avatar

Yelp
Big menu. Nice little store with miscellaneous Asian goods and Vietnamese pastries and snacks ready to go specializing. Fast service, ample parking, but no seating area for dine-in. Got the Bahn Mi Dac Biet. Not a fan of the meat first time trying it. Was a bit dry so wish they had a bit more sauce. Bread was perfectly crisp and veggies inside were refreshing. Got another one with Roast Beef and was much better. Still needed a bit more sauce so made my own Sriracha Aioli at home and improved the sando. Not bad, but could've been better.
google avatar

Yelp
Known as possibly the best banh mi in all of Northern Virginia, Banh Mi DC Sandwich certainly delivers if not at least comes pretty close. The sandwich comes in a crunchy yet fluffy French bread roll, the meats and veggies are fresh, and if you get the #1... you'll get the quintessential pate. The service here is pretty fast. The atmosphere feels like you're transported far away to the east, casual and bustling.
google avatar

Chris N.

Yelp
Amazing food, fast service, this place is a hidden gem. In the top five bon mi sandwiches I've ever had in my life. Don't sleep on this, if you're in the area and hungry, stop here. Note: I always order with extra meat and extra veggies, it comes out with a ratio of bread to filling that I think is appropriate then... But I like a ratio that most people don't sell at a restaurant
google avatar

Tash B.

Yelp
Stopped in when I saw this driving just off 50. Have to say this sandwich brought me back to the streets of Saigon. The whole vibe is extremely authentic, as is the menu. You can pretty much purchase anything Vietnamese that is wrapped in a banana leaf or baguette here. They also have baos and some dumplings. Had to wait about 10 min for my sandwich mid day Sunday so anticipate a slight delay. I only wish there were more fresh greens in my bahn mi but otherwise super fresh!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
4.7/5 Best Bahnmi in the DMV hands down. Tell me otherwise! I'm obsessed with the Vietnamese pickled daikon combo with cilantro and carrots. Chefs kiss. If you have that combo, any sandwich can be elevated! I love their bbq pork bahnmi to the point I dream about it sometimes. Honestly, it's hard to say more about it because you just have to try it yourself. Also!! Don't sleep on the eggrolls there. It's such a treat after having pho75 next door (which also slaps hard) who don't have anything else but pho. I'm interested in trying some of their pre prepared foods next time. Visually, they look amazing!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Best roast pork Bánh Mi sandwich I've had in years. Generous portions at a reasonable price. And the service is great! After ordering my meal I went to look around a few of the grocery shelves and an older gentleman found me to deliver my order. This place is first rate!
google avatar

Keyin L.

Yelp
Our favorite Banh Mi place. The sandwiches are so well constructed with delicious bread and fillings. The line always moves fast even with a lot of people. Highly recommend it if you're looking for a banh mi place with a great selection of different meats
google avatar

Yierou M.

Yelp
For those who've lived in the northern va area all their life, knows this place! It's like the OG of Banh mi and Vietnamese snack foods. Nowadays they have expanded their menu to 20+ types of Banh mi and more food selections! I like to stick to the traditional Banh mi with the Vietnamese cold cuts and pate! Service was friendly and super fast! All the aunties in the back pushing those sandwiches out like nobody's business hahaha! Don't expect fancy decor inside cause it's still the same as 20 years ago but no one cares about that! Taste wise...so my Vietnamese acquaintances swears this is still the best around. Banh mi was good no doubt but I've had ones just as good closer to home. The Banh Bao IMO was not the best I had. It was good but I've had better. Its was big and good size filling but i felt it could have been more flavorful. All in all, you still should visit and try them out for sure! They've been around forever so they doing something right!
google avatar

Yelp
Let's get the cat out of the bag. This is a place for you to make a line, order, and go find another place to eat your order. If it wasn't for this, I think this place would get the 5 stars. You also get a Penalty for paying with credit card (3%) so bring cash. Other than this, what you will find is delicious and authentic Vietnamese sandwiches (banh mi). Their bread is always super fresh and made the right way (no artificial crap or stabilizers); they even sell the day old bread at a huge discount because it will not suffice for their banh mi. You will have so many options that it will be hard to choose but I normally go for the grilled pork and all the toppings. Be careful if you cannot tolerate heat and just remove the green peppers. This is probably the best sandwich you'll find for the value you're paying. Try their spring rolls and buns.
google avatar

Ashley B.

Yelp
This is hands down the best banh mi you can find in the DMV. They make their baguettes fresh every day so you know you're getting the best stuff. It's so good that sometimes I order the buy 10 get one free just cause I wouldn't mind eating it multiple days in a row. It's the perfect sandwich to bring on a picnic or take and eat wherever you go. It is always so consistently good and doesn't take too long either. Sometimes I call ahead if I order a lot. The staff is also really nice and they have good premade desserts and other snacks as well. I love their Banh da lon and you can tell they really make everything fresh because things do sell out if you come later in the day.
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Selection for a quick bite that isn't banhMi related is small. I spotted by couple of times to grab a quick bite and it did the job but for the price... it's a little much. But I must say I respect how hard they work and being able to sustain themselves for years even after COVID. I know my friends and co workers who are Viet love this spot for their banhmis. Ambiance is like your typical Asian food store. But more Viet side. They also have SATE SAUCE! They make, I haven't tried it but I plan too soon.
google avatar

Katlen K.

Yelp
Our go to banh mi place! Our family has been going here for years and their sandwiches are consistently delicious. Friendly employees and lots of good Asian snacks too!
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
Their Banh Mi Thit Nuong (Grilled Pork) had a generous amount of meat and toppings, but the meat was more char siu in flavor (Chinese influence?) versus the traditional lemongrass grilled pork flavor. Not terrible, but not what I was expecting. The bread is good, too. The price was a tad steep ($7) for a sandwich, in my opinion. The ordering process is pretty easy and the food came out quickly. The parking is pretty tight and there isn't anywhere to sit inside, so you have to take your food to go. The space is limited, and there are also no bathrooms to use. However, if you're not wanting to fight the Eden crowd and an even worse parking situation there, Banh Mi DC is a good alternative.
google avatar

Julie T.

Yelp
Honestly, I don't get the hype. I have tasted way better banh mi. I wouldn't say this was the worst I've had but it is definitely more of the lower tier for me. The bread was a mid I was expecting something with a bit more crunch while the fillings was not fulfilling! I got the dac biet and honestly nothing special about it at all. It needed more fillings and it should have been more fulfilling. I needed to each something else after eating the banh mi.

Yelp
Love this place. It's my go to sandwich place especially Vietnameese . Ordered Pork rib sandwich .They made it very fast .Good pirtion of meat . Did not like their bread. It used to be Crunchy on the outside and soft inside. Bread felt stale. Sandwich lacked the flavor . The vegetables were not pickled .Dissapointed with the sandwich. My husband just took few bites snd threw the sandwich away . Don't know what happened to this place .

Yelp
DC Sandwich is def my place to get banh mi. I haven't been here in a while but I came later here last night before a long drive to VA beach. You can tell it was def closing time because the bread was a bit stale but nonetheless still so dang good. They don't have the buy 4 get 1 free anymore -- it changed to buy 10 get 1 free. I got the grilled pork and combination. My goodness, the grilled pork was so flavorful and had a really nice chew to the meat. The combination was good as well. This place always hit no matter what the time is. I also got the mung bean smoothie. It was grainy but that's how I like it .. lol. The flavor was prominent and wasn't too sweet. Even tho I ordered so late and got 6 sandwiches, the service was so nice and the food came out fast.

Yelp
My favorite banh mi shop!! The prices are great (~$8 per sandwich). I always get the grilled pork banh mi - the grilled pork is delicious and i lovee the pickled veggies and japapenos that come in the sandwich. The bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Giao W.

Yelp
Bánh mì DC bán chả thiu Banh mi DC sold old rotten ham, I bought this 2 days ago, put in the fridge as soon as I got home and I opened it today it rotten! You can clearly see the color and the wrapper
google avatar

Yoo C.

Yelp
Loved the #2 grilled pork sandwich (banh mi thit nuong sandwich)! The bread tasted fresh and they gave a tremendous amount of meat. I did find it a little bland but I found it still delicious and would definitely go back!
google avatar

Claro G.

Yelp
Place never disappoints! So good we always rat in the parking lot. Wish they had some tables outside to eat the food.
google avatar

Judy N.

Yelp
Prices here have really increased since I've last visited a few years ago. It is almost $7 for a banh mi sandwich now! And there is no longer buy 5, get 1 free like other banh mi places nearby. It's buy 10, get 1 free now. I will have to spend almost $70 to get one free sandwich. I understand it's tough times. But this is too much. This is also my to go place for Vietnamese beef jerky. I understand they sell them in individual bags now and not letting us serve ourselves due to Covid. But at least put the weight on the individual bags and take away the stale ones. I got the one that looked best and it was just expensive for what was inside. The banh mi sandwiches weren't bad. I remember them being better. Perhaps the price increase has affected my perception. I do think I'll be going to Eden Center for my future banh mi purchases.
google avatar

An P.

Yelp
Best sandwich shop with delightful tofu sandwiches. Love the fried egg rolls and fresh spring rolls. Great service and fair prices. My absolute go to for banh mi in the DMV! Love this place and have been going for years and years!
google avatar

Nina D.

Yelp
Still a tradition to get Bánh mì before heading home to Hampton Roads. The best this far in NOVA. We also get the iced coffee to keep awake driving home. Service is pretty quick given they normally have a line on the weekends. They more charge a transaction fee of you use credit or debit cards. Cash is preferred. You can also order ahead of time online at DCSandwich.com
google avatar

Mary L.

Yelp
Perfection... the quintessential banh mi though I've never been to Vietnam. The French bread is on another level. The mayo is uniquely delicious. Nothing extra to deter from the freshness that that cilantro and cucumber provide. I usually (err... always) go with the combo. No need to go ANY where else for sandwiches. Get an eggroll to munch on while you wait, which can't be more than five minutes. That is it.
google avatar

Susan V.

Yelp
The place looked a little old and don't feel like a bakery shop. The sandwiches was delicious. Please update also update prices on menus online.Event-though it is reasonable price compared to other Vietnamese bakeries. Customer service was wonderful but promotion was a little confusing... "buy 5 get 1 free " or "buy 10 get 1 free" sandwich ( 1 free regardless of how many sandwiches.) A

Yelp
I was in the area and had to stop here again! I have not been here in a long while and the food still as good if not better than my last visit. I ordered the grilled pork Banh Mi and the combination Banh Mi for my wife. I also got her the Bi Cuon Chay as a side dish. I got there after 2pm so there were no long lines and the place was neatly arranged just as I remembered it. Store items are properly displayed with nice clean counters and floors!

Yelp
Banh mi price is reanonable. Cha gio is very good. They have variety of desert too.
google avatar

Yelp
Banh Mi DC is a place that is unabashedly Vietnamese. They have explanations for things underneath some of the items but they offer virtually no help with some of them. That being said, the food here is fantastic. The sandwiches clearly have been made with their own bread. I have no clue how they're running a bakery in the back on top of all the stuff they sell but whatever they're doing, keep doing it! The desserts here are also fantastic but they aren't refrigerated. Either this is a testament to their freshness or a gross oversight I'm willing to overlook for how tasty it is. Final thought is that this place is well worth visiting. The prices are fantastic and so is the food. The only issue is that there is no place to eat but that's fine. It's good enough to just eat at the hood of your car.
google avatar

Yelp
Good quality Banh Mi. Service was quick and friendly. They have some other dishes and a mini grocery store that has some other prepared meals/desserts on the go.

Yelp
Did not expect to find such tasty Banh Mi on my trip to DC! My friend and I grabbed Banh Mi before visiting Great Falls Park, but he recommended we eat some of it before leaving, while it was fresh. The bread is crispy on the outside but soft on the outside. Prices are also very affordable at around $7 per Banh Mi. They also have a very extensive menu. There was a short line when we visited on a Saturday late morning.
