How to Order Banh Mi in Ho Chi Minh City | Eater

"A reliable all-around banh mi spot and working bakery whose ‘extra mixed meats’ (bánh mì thịt nguội) combines a peppery smear of pate, crunchy slightly sweet papaya pickles, Chinese-style roasted pork, Vietnamese steamed sausage, salty chicken threads, and more; the fried-egg bánh mì ốp la is a minimal but satisfying option, and while most sales are to-go there are a few plastic chairs and consistently fresh bread from the on-site bakery." - Austin Bush

You can just tell from the outside that this place serves amazing food! The sandwich, Banh Mi, is absolutely delicious, especially with the meat. It may not be the classic flavor you expect, but I really enjoy it! I honestly think it's one of the best I’ve ever had.

The other more famous shop has more queues over Bánh Mì Hồng Hoa, and is generally the popular spot for tourists, but don’t let fool you. Bánh Mì Hồng Hoa is far superior (atleast for me) and here is why: 1. Size: Bigger isn’t always better. 🙈 The competitor offers just one massive size of banh mi while Hong Hoa gives you an option; one that is as big as the rival shop and one that is just the right size that’ll give you the perfect bite with everything in it (bread, veggies, and meat). Since the competitor’s is so big, it’s impossible to get that perfect bite, unless of course, you have an equally as massive mouth. Lol. 2. Variety: The other shop has only one Banh Mi option which is the traditional “put every Vietnamese charcuterie” in a baguette. It’s tasty and the most traditional but you’d get tired of it easily. More options would be better. Meanwhile, Hong Hoa has 6 varieties to choose from with their Bread with Roast Pork option being the best! 3. Price: The other shop’s pricing, as mentioned by many, is too expensive at 73K VND. Yes, it is big. But Hong Hoa offers the same size at just 55K VND. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4. Taste: Not gonna lie, the rival’s is delicious as heck but there is a thing as over filling. It has too much meat, butter, and paté that it has become too overwhelming on the taste buds. They give you separate packs of fresh greens and pickled vegetables but even that isn’t enough to balance out the flavors. On the other hand, Hong Hoa’s is perfectly balanced. We tried both their Roast Pork and Mixed Meat one which is similar to Huynh Hoa’s to give it a fair comparison. For the Mixed Meat one, the slices of ham and paté taste better here although not as generous and the other shop. Again, Quality > Quantity. 😉 And for the Roast Pork one, it is hands down the best Banh Mi I’ve had in my life!!!!! The pork is nicely charred and its fattines goes really well with the pickled veggies. It meat is kinda reminiscent of Pork Sisig (a Filipino dish). It even has that spicy little kick from the chilies. It’s a sandwich worth the trip back to Saigon! 💯 Either way, both these Saigon banh mi shops made the most famous stall (for tourists) in Hanoi, Banh Mi 25, taste like utter crap. Lol. 🤣

Good alternative to Huynh Hoa that’s just around the corner. Larger menu so more options than Huynh Hoa - we ordered roast pork which was delicious. There was no pate/sauce so it could’ve done with a bit more flavour. There’s also seating for about 10 people out the front if you’re dining in.

July 2025 visit This was recommended to me in 2023 by our tour guide, and I forgot the flavor he suggested. So, my cousin and I ordered "EXTRA MIXED MEATS," which was a disaster - it had I think some sort of Liver spread or taste? Which I do not eat. Should've stuck with pork BBQ or roast pork and read the reviews instead of going to the top order. Kind of ruined the Bahn Mi experience for both of us. Atmosphere is great though and there weren't a lot of people at 9 AM.

Better than Huynh Hoa - for sure. More food options. The roasted pork was delicious. The sad thing however is that the Dac Biet, which is supposed to be special Bánh Mì, felt empty. Yes, meat was in abundance but no eggs given. Have had better ones on the streets - everything in abundance and still will charge 40k. Hong Hoa charged us 55k.

The better of the two in area (Huynh being the other). The filling is what stands out here, I went for the bbq pork and it was excellent (nice bits of crackling in there and mixed cuts). I also had the pork balls one and that was also excellent. I’d happily try any of the others on the menu with confidence. The extras (bao & wrapped leave bao) were very average, far too much bun and not enough filling. Stick to the Banh Mi and you can’t go wrong!

so good! i ordered the #1 special and it was so filling, it's actually quite a large banh mi so if you don't eat that much i'd suggest sharing it with someone

Super crispy bread, great balance of vegetables, Koriander and pork. Both heo quay and bbq pork were tasty. I had 2 and did not feel overwhelmingly stuffed. Will definitely return.
