The 10 Best Po’Boys In New Orleans

"When people come to New Orleans and ask, “What’s the best place to get a po’boy?” we often suggest gas stations. The pinnacle of such is Banks Meat Market, which is where you should try a hot sausage po’boy. They use the standard Patton’s, you can get one on a 32-inch loaf, you’ll be in and out quickly, and the prices are reasonable—$6 for the 10-inch po’boy and $17 for the 32-inch loaf. Beyond just getting a sandwich (and a Big Shot), we’ve also stopped by to get our phone screen fixed and even got serenaded in the parking lot once." - megan braden perry

We were hungry and didn’t want to break the banks. 9pm we got a fresh 32inch hot sausage on French for $16.99. It’s very hard to find places in the city still producing food this late at this price. I saw someone get a meat special this late.. The store was clean. As a native of the city that visits I will say this, the store is not far from the Orleans parish prison. When you pull up keep your head on swivel and pay attention at all times.

I recently had a shrimp Poboy from a very well-known establishment that I couldn’t get to because they were closed so on my way to work. I stopped at Banks meat market and ordered an oyster loaf 10 inch. I asked for a specific things on my sandwich like grilled onions, lettuce, and tomato Cheese little mayo. You know the basics when I got to work there was hardly any lettuce and tomato on the sandwich the oysters were half cooked and mushy. I could not even eat it. It was not it was not OK not acceptable at all and the toppings that I specifically asked for and paid for to be added. We’re not There in the trash it went. I called to complain about it and Sam told me to come back and ask for him that he would make me a sandwich and it would be free. Keep in mind. I was not asking for anything free when I went back. I just wanted it done correctly, according to my palate my specifications I asked for Sam he said OK yeah that was me you spoke to so I proceeded to order the sandwich again.I mentioned to him that he said it was gonna be free by the time he started making the sandwich,Another gentleman came out and started speaking to me saying we can’t give you a whole sandwich for free and I told him I didn’t ask for anything free. This is what Sam was standing right there looking like he saw a ghost told me that it would be on the house so the guy Begin giving me a lesson and economics by telling me how expensive oysters are lol I was promised a free sandwich and that was what I expected. I was also told that upon getting to work if the sandwich was unacceptable, I should leave work and bring it back to them and show them !!! maybe I should’ve kept it next day, but it was so gross. I had to toss it I ended up not arguing paying 40% off for the sandwich which turned out to be around $16 This one was not good either in the trash it went I said all that to say I’m done!!! Frankie and Johnny’s here I come!

A few months ago, I went to Bank's Meat Market I got the 32-in roast beef po-boy fully dressed with gravy. It was slamming! The meat was tender and the other ingredients were fresh. Even with the recent inflation the price was good at under $25. I tried the 12-in fried fish po-boy. It was very good. Based on the recommendations of other customers, I tried the sausage patty Po Boy. It is just not for me. I did not like it. I guess one person's trash is another person's treasure because those other customers said it was the best. That roast beef po-boy might be the best in the city. Thanks Bank's!!!

Google
20 for 10 inch oyster po boy not a 12 inch . I have eaten there for over 30 years. They still make a mean po boy. In town for a week and I limit myself to one a day.🤣

Yelp
My favorite place to get a poboy from whenever I'm back home. Everything is always fresh and prices are good. The sandwich is always stuffed with lots of shrimp as it should be.

Yelp

Yelp
Man please DO NOT SPEND YOUR MONEY HERE! As far as food goes they never get your order right , the kitchen staff has nasty attitudes and management only pacify the way their employees act.

Yelp
Growing up in Nola back in the day and I'm now a Texan, I truly missed a good AUTHENTIC shrimp PoBoy. Been to many places in Texas and Nola and this is one of my favorite locations for shrimp Poboys. Overstuffed like I remembered it, just how it was meant to be (not the huge gulf shrimp you find at other restaurants). The shrimp was seasoned and cooked to perfection. The dressing was just right and it didn't make the sand which soggy, be sure to eat the sand which asap. Every bite took me to my favorite safe place and dissolved all of the negative surroundings. (My other favorite PoBoy location is a Vietnamese owned called Cajun Seafood. There are multiple locations) This location was in one of the undesirable areas of Nola so be warned if you venture here in the evening. Both of my UBERS advised me against traveling to this neighborhood. Growing up in Nola I remembered not to talk to strangers. Simply keep walking and just say no thanks no matter what they're offering.

Yelp
Breakfast is DELICIOUS (bacon/egg/chz) - thick cut bacon- cooked to order. Shrimp poboy is awesome, ESPECIALLY considering the price. $7 including tax for a 10inch sandwich LOADED with shrimp...nothing to scoff at. As good of a "bang for your buck" as you'll find, considering the "tourist trap" that The POBOY has sadly become ($15-$20).

Yelp
Twice in 24 hours, why? I'll tell you! The store is super clean and very well laid out. The employees at the deli are extra patient with taking your orders since there is so much to choose from. There was a crowd both times but the response time made it feel like there wasn't any at all. The people who take food orders as very friendly and entertaining which made the wait time pass by like an ocean breeze. The pricing wasn't bad. A shrimp sandwich on bun was only $3.99 (most places start at $5 for the same thing). There oyster sandwich on bun was only $4.99. (Very few poboy shops serve oyster poboys) & while waiting I was able to marvel at the sight of a 32" po-boy. And not to mention the shrimp poboy was super delicious and seasoned to perfection. They also we're very generous with amount of shrimp used for my sandwich. I had a mouth full of shrimp on every bite!

Yelp
Local spot inside of a gas station that offers; gas, cell phone services, corner store items, check cashing, po-boys, fried chicken and a meat market all at affordable prices!!!

Yelp
Good place to grab a quick lunch, get your phone fixed, get money orders or pay a bill. I like to get the meat specials when they have them on sell.

Yelp
You would not believe how small the shrimp are they not even pop corn taste nothing like shrimp but selling as the price of a shrimp poboy

Yelp
We came here around midnight, starving and searching for hot food. Order at the meat counter to your left when you walk into the gas station shop. There were tons of locals waiting around for their sandwiches. My 10" shrimp po boy was only $6.99 and was freaking amazing. If you and your group all want the same type of po boy, might as well spring for the giant 32" size! Be ready to wait a while because they cook each one to order.

Yelp
************************************************************************************************************ Formerly Broad Discount Market... Now called Banks Meat Market *********************************************************************************************************** A treasure of sorts... If you don't know you just don't. Sandwiches (hello I had a dressed LIVER CHEESE sandwich here... Make you wanna slap yo mama... Or maybe some1 else's momma, My moms don't play that crap). Cell phone repair (as my fellow Yelper stated below ). Vegatables. Lunch. Spices. Soda. Tshirts. Swisher sweets... You name it & I think they have it. The meat specials there rock too!!! They used to have gas there. I'm not sure if they still have gas there, I'l have to check next time I'm there. There are the garden variety of friendly folks that kinda hang around outside, #noharmnofoul... Friendly people, customers & employees. Sooooo yea. I'm good with it.

Yelp
This place came highly suggested from one of my friends. Also another reason I stopped here was because it is close to where I live. So here goes my review. This place is a gas station/deli so don't expect sit down service, This place is purely take out. The customer service itself was alright, not terrible but not overflowing with extreme kindness. I guess I didn't expect much from a gas station/deli. Here's my favorite part the food. I ordered a 32 inch shrimp PoBoy, yes folks I ordered that fully dressed monster PoBoy all for myself. I will admit that it wasn't the best shrimp PoBoy I ever had but it was better than your average PoBoy shop. They used my favorite type of french bread, the soft kind (similar in texture to a hotdog bun). I still don't see how or why so many restaurants use that tough chewy french bread.I made sure when I ordered my sandwich that I had it cut in 4ths. Honestly 32 inches is a lot of sandwich! The best thing about this place is the fact that the PoBoy's they sell are dirt cheap. My shrimp PoBoy was about $12.99. You won't find a 32 inch Shrimp PoBoy that cheap at a lot of your normal mainstream restaurants. It's really hard to beat these prices. There are a few negatives to this business. The location is in sort of a sketchy area. I'm not saying that its one of the worst areas in the city but pay attention to your surroundings! Some of the other patrons albeit friendly, seemed a little on the shady side. In short slightly above average PoBoys, almost unbeatable prices, and decent service. Just be mindful of where your at.

Yelp
This place has awsome sandwiched for great prices. You can get an entire loaf of catfish filet for like $13.99. The hot roast beef or turkey or andy cold cuts will run you closer to about $8.99 for a whole loaf. If you want a hot sandwish for a great price i highly recommend heading to broad and banks. This broad and banks not the seafood place. They are always busy but your sandwich will be hot and you will be very happy. They bread is of course always freash because they always sell all the bread they buy. Great place questionable area.

Yelp
The only reason I am giving a 4 star is because the spot is in a crazy location. I mean, it's a gas station and I ain't talking bout WAWA. But don't let that detour you because our PoBoy was definitely worth it. 32 inches of pure delight, my husband and I are still snacking off this delicious treat. We are used to visiting crazy locations for good food because we are foodies that enjoy the chase (no judgement needed )... but our hot sausage (certified Patton) PoBoy with all the fixings was on point. Check it out!

Yelp
A lot of bang for your buck! If you're having a party or need to feed your family this is the place. You can get a 32 inch sandwich of your choice from between $8.99 to like $13.99. Not bad if you're on a budget! The reason for the 4 stars is there usually is a wait, not much standing room around where the order area is and they don't devein the shrimp. Maybe I'm a bit picky about shrimp but I've always been instructed not to eat shrimp that way. However, the hot sausage po'boys are always a delight for me. Either way, it's still worth the trip!

Yelp
Filled the spot! Hadn't ate anything since breakfast so we went in around 9pm and ordered a 3 ft shrimp po-boy sandwich, dressed & quartered! So many shrimp my wife and I only at half of the whole! Full as ticks! Thank you BanksMeatMarket!!!

Yelp
They officially have two more happy customers. My mom and I were being lazy on a Sun afternoon so after perusing Yelp, I told her about this 32' shrimp po boy everyone was raving about. She couldn't believe it so we agreed to check it out. I called them and they said it would be 10 mins. for our lunch. When we got there, there were 5 other people in line, waiting for their 32' shrimp po boys. No sweat. We get in line and chat with the regulars. One lady gets a po boy 4 times a week to feed her family of 8. She loves them and said that if food stamps allowed hot food, she would eat it every day. Another patron nodded in agreement. Still another asked us what we were there for. We said the po boy, like everyone else. He nodded his head and said it was a shame that no one went there for their fried chicken. He said it was the best in the city. Judging from the pieces we saw, we had to agree they looked damn tasty. Mom and I gave each other a look that meant MENTAL NOTE! Fried chicken next time! (Prices were also very reasonable.) 20 minutes later, we finally get our food and cradled that puppy back to the car. My mom was actually stroking the butcher paper wrapped sandwich in her arms, a big goofy grin over her face. She kept on saying she couldn't believe how big it was. The drive home was full of talks about how many pounds of shrimp would it take to fill up a 32' po boy. At this point, she is CONVINCED that it's mostly lettuce and tomatoes. "Maybe a dozen shrimp," she said confidently. WRONG! The sandwich was OVERFLOWING with shrimp. Barely any lettuce and tomatoes, it was mostly shrimp, bread and pickles. Small shrimp, but who cares? Your 32 incher is seriously OVERFLOWING with shrimpy yumminess! And our completely unscientific research led us to conclude that it's at least 3 lbs of shrimp for that sandwich. Maybe even 4. We both agreed it was definitely worth the $14 and change after taxes. We definitely know what we're bringing to the next potlucks or any social gatherings. Who needs Subway giant subs when you've got Banks Meat Market? The only negative was the temp of the food. Despite living 5 mins away, by the time we got home, the sandwich was cold. Maybe because they already premade all their 32' shrimps? Bread was day old and didn't really have the flaky po boy bread we were expecting/hoping. Definitely would have been better toasted in the oven for 15 mins. Would have liven everything back up again.

Yelp
Everyone talks about bad neighborhood? I was in jail with an Army veteran that got flip with the old man. He got into an argument with them and the huge Syrian guys pulled him "back inside" and held him down while the cops arrived. They could have taken out a ton of Mideast aggression on him, but they politely held him chest down and face held up...

Yelp
I was excited to stop in due to the rave reviews, but felt like I was gonna get mugged. I tried the hot wings and fried chicken. It was OK at best. I also bought some steaks and sausage from here. I have waited to write this review until I got back to Florida and tried it. The steaks were thinner at one end than the other, which makes for an unevenly cooked steak so that sucked. I felt like I needed a shower after I left. Was overall not impressed.....

Yelp
32" SHRIMP PO'BOY: $12.99! for real (look at my photo!). Between Milk Bar's amazing and over stuffed "Shrimply the Best" for $8.50, Slice's outstanding $11 BBQ version, and Banks Meat's behemoth I am less & less impressed with trendy Killer Po'Boys overrated & overpriced measly 8 inch, six shrimp sautéed version for $12. (If you do the math, when compared to Banks, a 32" Killer Shrimp Po'Boy would be $44!) TAILGATERS HEAVEN: interestingly it's not the spectacular po'boy deals that are Banks' forte, instead it's their bulk specials. Notably the "Mother of All" is 100LBS of mixed proteins that totals just $165.99! Another touts 60 pounds of 22 different proteins (including steak, assorted chicken and pig parts, lunch meats, etc.) plus 20 LBS of eggs, potatoes, bread, etc. and a 12 pack of soda for $129.99. WTF?! CAVEAT! VERY SKETCHY AREA: a block from Central Lockup, so go during the day and put your wallet in your front pocket!

Yelp
When you have a 24 hour gem like this, it's quite difficult to find things to complain about. On the surface, it's not in the best of neighborhoods, but even that keeps no one who is truly in the know from coming here. I've known about this place for ages, my cousin would tell me about the prices here all the time and I would not believe him one bit. It wasn't until I finally moved to Mid City and discovered for myself that he wasn't full of his usual bag of $ h! T, the prices here are ridiculous, and I mean in the good way. I don't understand how one can buy a 32" sandwich for under $10 and it not be skimp or tasteless, or have a single thing wrong with it at all. I don't understand, but I am grateful that the option is available to me. I've only come in once with incident, and it was only that the kitchen was closed for an hour (3-4am) for cleaning so keep that in mind. Also, the breakfast here is decent as well, I overheard a few orders for a sausage, egg n cheese sandwich which I'll be sure to get in on. I did have a small plate of grits with eggs, bacon and a slice of toast for like, three bucks. Just be sure to have your salt and pepper ready because there is none in the grits. The grits were also kinda watery, i like mine less soupy, but it got the job done.

Yelp
I frequent this place because of its shrimp on bun sandwich with fries, and have come across really nice, and chatty people every time. I've been going there since I was little, and my mom would buy a 36 in. long shrimp/oyster po-boy for my mom, dad, sister, and I to share. The previous reviewer's comments about it being a "ghetto shopping mall" and being "greeted by the usual crack smoker" are completely inaccurate, exaggerated, and casts a shadow over the establishment that has been part of the community for decades (honestly, why would anyone even shop at a place where you'd need to worry about being auditorily accosted by singing "crack heads" or buying from a ghetto shopping mall? But wait. What exactly IS a ghetto shopping mall anyway?!?). The place functions as not only a convenience store, but a gas station, electronics shop, pseudo-boutique, meat market and check-cashing place with reasonable pricing throughout. So, one could understand why there is so much traffic. The only reason I gave it four stars and not five is because the parking lot is a nightmare to navigate when the store is full. Other than that, the customers are funny, the workers are lively, and everyone's respectful. BTW, I've been there at night, and have NEVER had any issues. I have a friend from Austria who's enamored with this place for late night food binges too :-)

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. Upon walking in, you should be greeted by the casual crack smoker, singing a song about life on the rough streets smoking the crack pipe. Inside it's like a ghetto shopping mall-- excuse the language, but anyone would agree with me. There is an electronic department to the left selling phones and other stuff that nobody really wants to know where it originated from. The meat market serves meat specials that you can't beat-- literally, anywhere. 32-inch shrimp Po-boys for $12.99. Those things would feed an entire village in Yemen. I like to stop by for the more reasonably-sized 10-inch shrimp or catfish Po-boy-- usually marked at $5.99, but the guy behind the counter was so high that he sold it to me for $3.99 last time. The Banks Meat Market is open 24 hours 7 days a week, but I wouldn't recommend coming here alone in the evening. I once lived in St. Roch so I have some serious street-cred. When I roll by, I usually run into my homies and we catch up over a cold one. This is the closest to fast food that I would ever eat. When I'm in the mood for some junk food, this is where I stop for a stuffed Po-boy.

Yelp
Me, my daughter, and sister stumbled upon this place while taking a ride. We were told by the locals that we should stop in at some of the convenience stores to eat where the locals eat. On first sight, I thought it was a joke. The neighborhood was scary and looked rough. A total nightmare! Definitely not the prettiest place where you'd find decent food. It was a meat market, restaurant, gas station, and corner store which, sold everything under the sun. They even had bill paying and check cashing services. My sister even needed a postage stamp and bought one there, LOL! However, after talking to a few people who stood waiting for their food, we decided to give it a try. We ordered a catfish platter and a philly cheese steak for shits and giggles. They can even make HUGE sandwiches for parties. We talked to the locals while we waited and let them know that we really, don't have this back home in Chicago. Anywho, we took our food back to the French Quarter where our hotel was located. We weren't too, impressed with the catfish as it had gotten soggy on the drive. But, it would probably be good if it was still hot and crisp. However, the philly cheese steak my daughter ordered was delicious! I was shocked. The meat was tender, good amount of cheese, had onions and bell peppers. Unfortunately, I didn't order anything but, I wished I would've because I took several bites of her sandwich. GOOD! Maybe, when I'm feeling brave enough to go back to the hood, I'll return to get myself a sandwich during my next trip to NOLA.

Yelp
One of the many reasons why I love my neighborhood so much. AMAZING roast beef po boy. Overstuffed but not soggy and 10 inch for less than 5 bucks? I just, I can't even. I love you, Banks Meat Market. Never change. Sometimes the lines are super crazy long, but honestly, that just proves my point - that they're the best tasty delicious things ever.

Katie K.

Yelp
Love this place. I'll admit I might be biased because I love a block away from this haven of ridiculously inexpensive po boys that's open 24 hours, but damn. Its totally worth whatever stumble you have to make at 2 in the morning.

Yelp
I came here while staying in New Orleans for mardi gras, it seemed everywhere in town was out of gloves and i had just left the family dollar so i said why not give them a try for a Po'Boy before i go back to my room. Honestly the prices are unbeatable, and they ended up having gloves there too!!! The Po'Boy very good!! I had about a 20-25 minute walk back to my hotel from that place and it was still hot when i got there. I also had Po'Boys from Johnnys, and from Deanies while i was there i would say this place has better Po'Boys than both of those places. 32 inches for 9.99 is unbeatable!!!! Thats basically 3.00 per sandwhich will be returning when im in New Orleans next year.

Yelp
The unwashed masses are in abundance drinking the days away out front. Cheap po-boys, meat, cheese, liquor, beer, etc. They fix iPhones too. iPhone guy was incredibly nice and didn't charge me for the small part I needed.
