Four Philly Breweries Team Up for a Beer Garden, and More Openings This Week | Eater Philly

"The family behind rolled ice cream chain Sweet Charlie’s is turning its attention to bao with a Latin-Asian-American take on the steamed bun; the menu includes buns with crispy chicken, buffalo sauce and blue cheese, a pastrami bun with cabbage slaw, and build-your-own noodle, rice, and salad bowls, with Chef Hugh Moran consulting on the menu. Bao Nine opens for takeout and outdoor seating (room for 30 outside) at 38 S. 19th Street on Thursday, June 25, with hours from noon to 9 p.m." - Rachel Vigoda

Google
Delicious baos with a distinct Philly twist. We tried the Clucky, Lil Bao Wow, the Bao Boa, and the limited edition Thanksgiving Gobbaoler. The proteins, sauces and condiments were nicely balanced in each one. The bao bun was also soft and spongy, able to hold the contents of the baos without falling apart. Great spot for a snack!

Google
Bao Nine Absolutely delicious selections of Bao! Try each one. They are as tasty as they beautifully appealing to the eye. A savory delight!

Google
Fun, funky fusion food. Great if your papalote is craving something a little different. Especially enjoyed the Thanksgiving special Char Siu Turkey

Google
Got the threesome with the mahi mahi, hot motha clucka, and the sticky chicky buns. All super flavorful and fresh. Recommend not getting the fish ones but the chicken buns are spicy/zesty/tangy. Very good lunch spot.

Google
I fid like the cauliflower Bao and the chicken skewers bowl. The drinks menu was limited the time I went in

Google
So good and a perfect meal when you’re feeling like something a little smaller. They have a great variety of options and we loved everything 👏

Google
The food here is absolutely amazing! Seriously, you guys are killing it with the flavors. The service was super friendly and quick too. Everyone working there was just the best, so helpful and attentive. Definitely coming back for more!

Google
Sweet little spot that is clean, neat, and easy to order. Bao’s were yummy and the rice bowl was excellent.

Yelp
Recommendation of the chicken in their bowls was so good. Fresh, juicy, very flavorful.. a must try.

Yelp
Always wanted to try some bao buns from here and finally made a stop. There is a large menu on the wall when you walk in and you order on a kiosk at the counter. Prices are listed on the kiosk. Tried the sticky chicky, crispy chick, and bao boa buns. All had some pretty good flavor, proteins were cooked nicely and the sauces complemented it well. Wasn't any staff really outside the kitchen so couldn't ask for anything if you needed. Overall, pretty tasty and a nice spot to hangout for a quick bite. Thanks

Yelp
The concept is kinda cool: bao with diverse filling options, from teriyaki chicken to pastrami beef and falafel. However, the execution is not there. It feels bland overall.

Yelp
The meat and ingredients were good quality. I enjoyed the items we got for takeout. I wish the food was a little more flavorful but I enjoyed the items. It's a cute shop and the employees were nice.

Yelp
Do not buy a gift card!!! I received a $50 gift card, purchased from their website, and received a link to create an account with $50 credit. With the $50 in my account, I tried to pay for my order in the store and they said they "do not have/do gift cards" even after showing the credit my account and their website where you can purchase gift cards. I was standing there for 20 minutes while they were trying to figure it out, which was completely disorganized and a huge waste of my time because I ended up paying for my meal out of pocket and now have a useless $50 credit. I'm very annoyed. Food tasted pretty good though.

Yelp
Every trip to Philly isn't complete without stopping here for baos. The perfect snack for mid-day hunger or a pre-game bite before a night out. This spot was a college favorite of mine, and it still brings back nostalgia with every visit. The Sticky Chick is hands down my top recommendation: flavorful, satisfying, and consistently delicious. Quick service and fresh baos make this a go-to every time I'm in the city.

Yelp
Bao Nine is a great, centrally-located lunch spot with a fun blue exterior and bright interior. Place your order at the kiosk up front and find a seat (it opens up more toward the back). Our table's food came out quickly and piping hot. We were impressed with the staffer who brought it out from the kitchen, who was both very nice and spot on when matching order-to-diner. I tried the chicken bao on special that day and the Crispy Chicken Bowl--choose your base (rice, noodles, or greens--I went with the latter, 'cause I knew I was having rice with dinner) and add a spicy sauce to go with the teriyaki sauce that comes with. Will definitely return to try more offerings!

Yelp
I was Visiting my sisters from California. They kept raving about a boa bun place they knew I would love. Turns out they were right! I live in the Bay Area so we have bao buns everywhere. I have to say These were some of the best bao buns I had! The bun was super soft and prepared well. If I could just order that I would. I ordered the sticky chicky and the bang bang bun. If I had to pick I would just get the chicken one and be fine with that as I feel there was more slaw than Shrimp. Nonetheless chicken was super good and packed with flavor! I can't wait to come back here on my next trip to Philly :)

Yelp
Love this spot near Rittenhouse Square! They have a wide array of different types of creative baos, and some bowls and side dishes. My favorite is the sticky chicky, which seriously brings the A game in terms of taste and texture. Shishito peppers were also bomb. Their drink selection is a little limited, with mostly canned options. You order at the counter and they bring it to your table - every time I've gone it hasn't been crowded so service was fast. In terms of price, 3 baos will run you $15, which seems reasonable, though I wish they were a little bigger.
google avatar

Yelp
Deck the halls with baos of holly! 'Tis the season for trying new foods. I was super excited to try bao buns for the first time. It was great that Bao Nine had a few vegan/vegetarian options to choose from and a nice selection of sides as well. I got The Garbaonzo - filled with falafel, tahini and some pickled veggies. Taste was there, though the falafel was a little hard? Not sure if it sat too long or if it was supposed to be that consistency. Additionally, I got the plant based bao and that was amazing. It tasted like a cheeseburger! The buns on both were soft and fluffy. I ordered the spicy crunchy cucumber salad on the side. It had a strong ginger taste but nonetheless was enjoyable. Not that spicy either. I'm curious about their bowls and dessert so I'll be sure to stop over again when I'm craving something new.
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
Fun combinations, but not always as delicious as you'd expect. We got a noodle bowl with the chicken and beef. The beef was overcooked but had potential, and the breaded chicken was pretty darn good. The noodles are the cold type, with pickled vegetables and quite solid. The bao buns were beautiful, the buns them self were perfect and the food combos were fairly inspired, just didn't taste amazing. I would normally not order the thanksgiving mash up, but my SO did and that was actually one of my favorites. The buffalo chicken one I would skip, but the shrimp was good. It was quiet when we arrived right at noon but several other small groups showed up by the time we left. Oh and the bathroom is serviceable if you don't look at it too closely
google avatar

Phylicia H.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious! My company ordered a variety of bao buns for lunch and they were a big hit with everyone! I tried the Garbaonzo and the Yenta. Both delicious, filling and flavorful. Some folks mentioned Prime Time was just okay. The side dishes are also something people should not skip out on. I loved the shishito peppers, spicy crunchy cucumbers and Brussels sprouts. All sides deserve a strong 10/10. I will definitely be back and highly recommend getting these catered!

Yelp
I walk past this place all the time and finally decided to pop in. A nice light lunch treat mid day. I opted for the Threesome which feels like a good deal considering the variety of bites. Got The Hot Motha Clucka, The Crispy Chick, and last but not least The Bang Bang. Each one was better than the last, but you really can't go wrong here. It's a dine in or to go spot. Service was great. The buns came out fast. Again great for lunch.
google avatar

Brad H.

Yelp
Was looking for some quick food when in Philly recently and stumbled across this place. One of the more unique foods I've had in awhile. Their bao buns are all made perfectly. Super soft and flavorful. I had the hot motha clucka, which was a buffalo chicken style one, and the prime time, which was a cheeseburger style. Both were incredible and loaded with flavor. They are slider style so not super filling, which is perfect because you will want to try more than one.
google avatar

Josh S.

Yelp
I'm not a big fan of the Wawa style ordering screen at a restaurant. It made for a weird vibe in my opinion - like "we just want to do online orders and not interact with customers." Anyway, the baos are small - you'll need three, so get the combo. They were fine compared to others I've had over the years. Not the best actual bao buns, but the fillings were decent and creative. I would highly recommend the mango black tea - that stuff was delicious.
google avatar

Bansri P.

Yelp
Was not impressed by the one vegetarian bao option on the menu. Shishito peppers were good but wish they had a greater variety of vegetarian options.
google avatar

Jesse K.

Yelp
"Bao nine" is a small bao bun joint. We had the cluck chicken one with teriyaki. Pretty good. So are the pickles. I liked the taste of the buffalo chicken one too. My wish would be that they were bigger. I can eat one in 2 bites. A grown man needs 6 buns a to be full. Service is generally fast. Restaurant only had 1-2 people inside both times I went.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Very delicious food! I got the Lil Bao Wow, The Bao Bao and The Sticky Icky and all were amazing. The Lil Bao Wow was a little sweeter than I was expecting and the pickles stole the show. The Bao Bao short rib was juicy and the truffle wasn't overpowering. The Sticky Icky was my favorite flavor profile. The chicken pieces were a little thick but I'd rather have that than not enough chicken. Highly recommend all three! Brussels were fantastic too. Nice and crispy and well seasoned. Big enough for two people to share. 5 stars for the food, 4 stars for the dining area/ambiance. It's bright, plenty of seating, they played good music but it didn't feel like the store was kept up with.
google avatar

Andrea S.

Yelp
We bought some to go and it was fast and easy. Straight forward menu, simple meals but hit the spot. Dining area is clean.
google avatar

Audrey W.

Yelp
This is a simple and brilliant idea: put all varieties of meat sandwiches into a bao bun. We ordered a bunch of different ones. My favorite was the Thanksgiving special -- which was, if I recall, turkey stuffing and cranberry sauce. The others I had were good -- the bao is really nice and fluffy -- but nothing was a standout. The burger one, the sticky chicken -- these were all good, don't get me wrong. I don't think you can order the wrong thing here. Especially if you get the dessert -- the fried bao with a sugar glaze dipping sauce. Got take out. Food came out fast.
google avatar

Steve H.

Yelp
This was my first ever bao experience, and I'll definitely do it again! If you're new to bao, maybe the best analogy is that this is the Korean version of a taco. But the serving piece is a really fluffy, rice bread, and the ingredients are fresher, not greasy, and more interesting. Bao Nine was really clean, friendly, and spacious. The menu boards were very easy to understand. The prices were very reasonable. The food was excellent.
google avatar

Madison P.

Yelp
Overall- fun menu with okay food at a decent price We ordered delivery. The baos all looked super fun on the menu, but the flavors were really sweet and more Americanized than I was expecting. The cucumber salad was only okay too. Everything was very sweet. It did travel well though.
google avatar

Autumn Sky B.

Yelp
A clean, non descript spot for quick service bao. I wanted to try a few so I ordered the threesome (which really is about the same price as ordering 3 separately anyways). All of them had plenty of filling - enough that after one bite each of the buns split dropping all the ingredients out. The sticky chicky was good flavor and two pieces of chicken - I would order again. The crispy chick was my favorite even though there was only one piece of chicken in it. I wouldn't order the bang bang again, the breading on the shrimp was kind of mushy and fell right off and didn't have any seasoning to it.
google avatar

Luke C.

Yelp
This is a bao+bowl restaurant. I went for dinner and it was quite quiet. I got the steak bowl. Toppings: Crispy fried shallots - very nice and flavorful with good crunch. Vegetables: Slices of carrots, cucumber, green onions, a radish of some sort or jicama, and lettuce Noodles - These were cold but pleasant. They were rice noodles. Two sauces: There was a fish sauce and a more soy type sauce. Both of these sauces were flavorful and worked well with the other ingredients. The one thing that was off was the steak. So the pieces came on skewers and they had a good flavor on the outside, but I think the cut of meat was weird. It tasted very "beefy" like stew meat. Usually for this, I would have thought it would be thinner cut or flank steak. I think the meat seemed to only be seasoned on the outside. Presentation was OK. They just gave a plastic tray, and I thought that was a little bit disappointing because I was dining in and I wish we had real cutlery. Overall it was decent with an OK price and portions. I think you should just not order the steak.
google avatar

El P.

Yelp
Summary: ordered a "threesome" of baos through uber eats. The baos were good - an Americanized fusion of different flavor profiles all tucked into a bao. Bao nine offers a pretty wide variety of different flavor combinations that are a mix of more "classic" flavors with newer Americanized fusion options in there too. The taste was okay/good. It kind of felt like the Bao-equivalent of a taco place that tries a bunch of flavor options, but it doesn't always quite hit its mark. The baos themselves weren't quite as fluffy/soft, but that might be attributed to the Uber Eats time to delivery. I can't speak on the service or the ambiance there, but I will say Uber Eats was pretty spot on with their estimated timing, so it seems like Bao Nine does a good job keeping up with orders in a timely manner.

Yelp
Incredible!!!!!!!! Soooooo amazing! The sticky chicky bao is the best!!!!!! I also really enjoyed the gringo! The spicy cucumbers are yummy and the fried bao with icing were good too! My fiance got the crispy chicky, the bao boa, and the garbaozo. He really liked the bao boa! We love that you can get three bao in a combo and we love all the clever names! We got delivery so I didn't get to see the ambiance or service (which I am sure was great). I forgot to take pics (I was very hungry lol). Highly recommend!!!!!
google avatar

Lauren I.

Yelp
Ordering here is such a trip experience. The baos have fun pun-names, but it makes you feel like you're barking. The ambiance is nice; order at the counter and take a seat, you'll get served and return your tray when done. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed by the baos themselves. Although the kitschy, "less traditional" options are fun, they didn't do it for me in terms of flavor.
google avatar

Elle F.

Yelp
Got takeout from here while I was in town. Super convenient to The Motto in Rittenhouse! The cucumbers were a bit of a surprising start here-- they had a great mix of flavors and textures going on. As for the bao, I was a big fan of the Sticky Chicky, thought the Bang Bang was pretty bland (didn't finish it) and thought the Crispy Chick was good. I'd order from here again, but wouldn't get the shrimp one.
google avatar

Alyson S.

Yelp
What a great concept and such delicious food! Stumbled upon this place as we were in the area looking for a snack. We had the sticky chicky, bao boa, and bang bang. The baos may be small but are packed with flavor. We were pleasantly surprised. The taro chips and Brussels sprouts were addictive too. I'd definitely return!
google avatar

Dinesh A.

Yelp
The gringo - was okay but forgetable bao The bang bang - more concerned with ingredients spilling out The garbaonzo - falafel was tasty Service was prompt and quick Mix of various asian cultures' art and decorations
google avatar

Linette S.

Yelp
We decided to try this place out because of the raving reviews and were actually underwhelmed. There was a strange smell when we stepped into the establishment (which should've been a red flag for us), but we still decided to stay and try out the buns. The combos prices don't make sense to me? If each bao bun is $4.95 ... how is getting 3 bao buns for $14.50 a combo meal? Food wise - I had the sticky chicky and wasn't wowed by it. I didn't hate it, but it's definitely not something I would get again. Truthfully, I don't think I'd come back here.
google avatar

Adam B.

Yelp
I've always walked by this spot and always wanted to try it. Today I decided to finally take the plunge because I love a good bao and wanted to try something new. It was a decision I did not regret. It's a chill place with really nice bao buns. Service was helpful in picking them as I've never been to a bao place before. I ordered the combo bun The threesome for my choice of 3 buns or sides. I went for Baos aw I really wanted Baos. Review of the Baos Buffalo Hot Motha Clucka: my favorite. I could eat like 10 of these. So good Chicken: classic fried chicken, very good with the coleslaw on top Primetime: good but somewhat disappointing. But I think that's on me for getting essentially a burger here. Burger itself wasn't great, but good. Toppings were solid. The Baos themselves, like the buns, those are heaven. Why aren't bao buns a bigger thing everywhere? They're spreading and I welcome it. Anyways, will be back to try more. The back bod in particular looks tempting. Do attend
google avatar

Rosa Z.

Yelp
My friend and I had lunch at Bao Nine. Personally, I ordered two baos (the bao boa and bang bang shrimp), taro chips, and dessert bao. We shared the taro chips as an appetizer. The chips came with two sauces, a cream based horseradish dipping sauce and a lighter sweet chili sauce. I thought that the chips tasted better without sauce but if I were to choose between the two sauces, I would recommend dipping the chips in the sweet chili sauce. The bang bang shrimp bao never disappoints (this is my 2nd time coming to bao nine and I ordered the bang bang shrimp bao my first visit as well) and the bao boa was decent since the meat was tender and the sauce was creamy. As a side note, in all honesty though, I did pick off the jalapeno from my bang bang shrimp since I so not tolerate spicy food or spicy garnishes that well due to my low spice tolerance. Lastly, for dessert, the dessert bao was basically cut-up pieces of bao, coated in cinnamon sugar and there was a condensed milk glaze to dip or drizzle over the bao. I choose to dip rather than drizzle the dessert bao. My friend was pretty full at this point, since he ate three baos, so I ate most of the dessert bao by myself. I think if you are interested in trying the baos only, I would recommend ordering 3x baos per person (if you are hungry) in order to feel full. Even though I only ordered two baos, I was satisfied due to the taro chips side and dessert bao.
google avatar

Chen Z.

Yelp
It's an interesting concept but not all the buns blended together. We tried 6 buns so the majority of the menu, and none of them really stood out. The noodle for the bowl was cold noodles that with pickled vegetables. Fried chicken was good.
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
To be honest this was the worst bao buns id ever eaten. I know they weren't traditional or authentic but I don't believe I've ever tasted a piece of food that tasted like it was one of those aesthetic meals. The best thing I had was the soda and it was a little flat. The flavors were not good in the lil bao wow or the bao boa, the bun was falling apart, it had a weird taste too, the short rib didn't have any flavor. It was a chaotic meal, I only took 2 bites of each and was done.
google avatar

Zack W.

Yelp
Aside from the convenient location, there were so many great aspects about my order, namely the taste, price, and speed. I ordered carry out, as did pretty much everyone else in the restaurant. Of the five people I saw, everyone ate out, even though the interior was clean and had plenty of table seating. What appeared to be a skeleton crew at the time still worked very fast, getting my large order together in 20 minutes and keeping me updated on my status through their website. The main reason why I gave this place a 5 is the value; if this is your first order, you get a free bao, making the pretty value-friendly $15 for 3 baos a much better deal. I opted for the "Hot Mother Clucker, Yenta (pastrami) and Bao Boa" with a side of Taro chips. It came in a wonderful nice packaging, and it was Good. I really enjoyed each and was surprised how filling it was. The Taro chips were delicious and a unique taste-- my only gripe was the Yenta was VERY strong tasting, with heaps of mustard that drowned out the rest. I highly recommend Bao Nine, especially if you're visiting into Philly. It's right across the Motto Hotel and others, and their welcome signup deal+online ordering makes it so cheap and convenient to get great fusion food.
google avatar

Yelp
Went here on a whim and very hungry after a long urban hike. If I had known that a bao was a fat roll. I would have kept moving. However, it was not bad. My spouse ordered a chicken, pork, and beef versions. I ordered the charred Brussels sprouts. They were a bit over seasoned, but good. I am giving the place a 5 because it was clean and in good repair. Clearly it is a newer facility. I hope they will keep it maintained. The background music was unobtrusive. Overall, good afternoon pre - diner light meal when shared
google avatar

Twinkle K.

Yelp
Great bao place. They only had two vegetarian flavors one is falafel and vegan. Vegan is not on their menu on the wall. The staff was great and place has ample seating.
google avatar

Amelia S.

Yelp
Fresh fast food. Location is clean. Service is lacking. We weren't approached right away and the cashier couldn't answer my question about the beverages. I can't have dairy and I was trying to figure out if they had alternate milks for their iced milk tea options. Had to repeat my order a few times. The drinks are quite expensive for $5 for a pineapple mango lemonade (that wasn't great).
google avatar

Alexandria R.

Yelp
I was staying nearby and was craving an evening snack. I love bao especially with Peking Duck so, I was excited to discover what other ways it can be used. Food: 5/5 I got the Boa Wow and my partner got the Brussel Sprouts. I would have paid double for these Sprouts because they are literally the best takeout Brussel Sprouts I have ever had! They are fried, tossed in a light sauce, dusted with curry powder, and sprinkled with rice puffs on top. DELICIOUS!!! On to the baos, my Bao Wow ($4.85) was so yummy! It was stuffed with pork and just the right amount of pickled veggies to add some nice acidity to the dish. Vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore this is a place to come back too. All in all, you know I am coming back! They have few seats in the back which makes it great for the quick lunch break or talking with a few friends.
google avatar

Keerthana R.

Yelp
Ordered delivery- the baos come in the cutest packaging that makes it super easy to eat! Favorite were the Crispy Chick and Teriyaki Chicken! The falafel bao was very dry since there wasn't much sauce. The short rib bowl wasn't that good either. The Brussels sprouts were AMAZING! Definitely should get this if you're ordering from here.
google avatar

Wen Na Z.

Yelp
Bao Nine serves a unique variety of fusion baos, so don't come with the expectation that you'll find authentic/traditional Peking duck baos here. Some of their flavor combos do seem a little questionable on a bao, like their thanksgiving inspired one with char siu turkey and cranberry sauce? Regardless, of the ones we tried, we found them to be saucy and flavorful.
google avatar

Vivian Q.

Yelp
Had high hopes for this place but was shocked at how incorrect my pickup order was - only 1 of the 3 buns I ordered was accurate! The actual buns taste fine but can't really justify the $5 each cost. Disappointed to say the least
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
Grubbin' bites and a really nice price. Distinctive flavors make this a great place for foodies on a budget!
google avatar

Logan W.

Yelp
Food was GREAT! Buns were cooked perfectly and every bite was delicious. My favorite was the short rib. So good! Service was quick and efficient. Overall, a great experience!
google avatar

Brad M.

Yelp
Small little cafe feel place with a few tables in the back to sit and eat. The menu has all the bao buns you'd like. The lady that helped us was very nice and patient. We decided with 2 threesome meals. Each one was light and fluffy with crispy meat and tasty sauces.
google avatar

Brian S.

Yelp
A small spot that does quick service bao buns. While you wait you can see the buns being formed and cut before they make it back to the kitchen to be steamed. The buns themselves are fluffy and they are well balanced ingredients. Tasty and quick.
google avatar

Jasmine L.

Yelp
After my disappointment with Baology, we headed over to Bao Nine to try their version on baos. Seems like it's quite a trend! Of course, these aren't traditional baos, they're more inspired, fusion baos! Make sure to download the app/make an account for a free bao on your first pickup/delivery order. The Bao Boa: braised short rib, house truffle wiz, cherry pepper relish -The house truffle sauce was super good, but the short rib was a tad dry (but more tender than the pork belly for sure) We got our order takeout so even cold, this was pretty good. I wish they add more truffle sauce though! Definitely try this if you like truffle sauce. Lil Bao Wow: roast pork belly, green chili sauce, radish, pickles: The green chili sauce was delicious, the radish/pickles adds a must-needed tart/acidic kick to it. The roast pork belly was just okay/dry here. $4.85 each I would definitely pick the Bao Boa over the Lil Bao Wow- quite yummy. It's very clean inside. You can order inside/order online. I don't think you can eat inside yet though, but they're okay with you waiting inside for pickup.

Yelp
Great fast buns. Buffalo and Bang Bang shrimp are good. Gringo chicken is a bit dry. Great lunch spot-- 3 buns for same price as a sweetgreen.
