My wife and I decided to celebrate our ten-year anniversary at Eleven Madison Park. It was also our first three-Michelin-star restaurant, so to say we were excited is an understatement. If you want the TLDR: it was good, but we left a little disappointed.
When we first walked in, we were greeted right away by a warm/friendly staff that made us feel like we were in for a really special night. We arrived a little early, had a drink at the bar, and even there, the service was warm and very welcoming. When we were finally seated, the dining room was exactly what we'd imagined: elegant, calm, quiet. You get the sense that everything in that space has been considered, down to the tiniest detail. At one point, my wife and I noticed a single silver balloon floating in the corner of the room and we joked that some kid must've left it behind...when we asked the waiter he said it was actually an art installation! That pretty much summed up the place. Again, nothing was accidental, everything deliberate.
I'll be honest--for the first part of the meal, our minds were blown. The leeks, the broth, the bread--just incredible. Every dish felt balanced and deliberate. But as the night went on, something changed. The flavors got heavier and the spices got louder. What started off as refined and thoughtful began to feel a little overdone. It wasn't that the food was bad. Far from it. But it just lost that quiet elegance that made the first courses so special.
The service also changed pace. Still friendly, still professional, but just...slower. The timing between courses got longer, and instead of feeling that the experience was in sync with us, we were going at the pace of the restaurant. By the time we reached the fifth or sixth course, my wife and I were both thinking we had enough and were starting to become almost eager to leave--which isn't the feeling you want to have at what is supposed to be one of the best restaurants in the world.
Again, there wasn't a single moment that was unpleasant per se (sorry, just thinking of our next meal). The food was good, the people were great, and the space was beautiful. But for all the precision and polish, it just didn't leave that lasting impression we were hoping for. Maybe our expectations were too high from having watched too many episodes of the Bear, maybe it just wasn't their best night. Either way, for a restaurant with this much hype, I expected to walk out amazed. Instead, I walked out thinking, " It was fine.", and fine is just not why anyone goes to dine at Eleven Madison Park.
