The First Timer’s Guide To Drinking In LA

"Contrary to what your parents remember from their visit in 1995, Downtown LA is very much a thing now. While you can find any type of bar you want Downtown these days, your first move should be Nomad. Located in the DTLA hotel of the same name, you take an elevator all the way to the roof, and step out onto an open-air patio with some of the best views of Downtown, plus a pool, tremendous cocktails, and a cool, low-key crowd that’s always ready to mingle." - brant cox

19 Best Places to Drink Cocktails Outside in Los Angeles Right Now | Eater LA

"With a classy small, marble-topped indoor bar and plenty of space outside near the new Hotel Per La’s rooftop pool, Bar Clara offers stunning views of Downtown LA along with drinks from Coleen Morton. Her list is especially friendly for daytime imbibing, with options ranging from light to boozy spritzes and the like." - Eater Staff

Bar Clara Review - Downtown LA - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Bar Clara sits above Hotel Per La in DTLA serving good cocktails and a solid menu of Mediterranean-ish dishes. This sprawling space has everything you want in a rooftop: good views, a large pool you’ll dip your toe into at some point, and a laidback crowd that’s not afraid to throw back some cocktails on a Saturday afternoon. The biggest difference between this downtown rooftop bar and others is that you won’t have to wait in a long line or pretend you know the DJ to get in here. This is more of an easy-going, post-work spot than a well-known party place, so you can usually walk right in and get a table without much fuss. Their citrus scallops and harissa prawns pair perfectly with a spritz by the pool, plus they’ve got some tender steak and stuffed snapper on the menu if you’re ready for a whole meal. Thank you Victor at Bar Clara for the superb level of hospitality! He made a wonderful last word and espresso martini with a hint of cinnamon. I also had a guest who doesn’t consume alcohol so he made a wonderful mocktail for them. The pool is ACCESSIBLE and heated! The outdoor area is really nice and clean. Would love to come back, even if I’m not staying at the hotel.

Google
Really pretty place but definitely needs more employees. Got told to sit down by the bartender as he was too busy to take our order. He mentioned that a server will come to us. We sat down, waited and waited and people started coming up to the bartender ordering from the bartender and it became a s*** show. Never got a drink. Never saw the server. Ended up just leaving. Mind you that was on a Sunday midday by a pool on a hot day. One bartender, one server. Almost a full pool.

Google
Very cute rooftop bar. It's actually rather quiet and tame up here on weekends. They have a restaurant in the first floor with live jazz that tends to have more people. My only qualm with this place was the drink prices and quality. We paid about $20 per cocktail and the margaritas just looked kind of skimpy. I added a photo so you can see the glass was half full when served. My martini was decent, however.

Google
Nice rooftop for drinks and snacks/meals. Service was good however the table I had was dirty and there was a hair in my order of fries. Both were not the fault of the server and was remedied by management (comped the fries). They did offer to take the entire dish of the bill but I had the steak which was good and I don't think it's right to get they entire dish comped when it was only the fries. Used the comped fry money to give to the server.

Google
Nice roof top bar with a good selection of drinks and food and friendly staff. We called in on our last day in LA for a drink and to relax in the sun for a bit, it was really nice and would recommend

Update Review 2: So I ended up coming back with my parents and wow have thing changed…. The waiter was missing 3/4 of the time to the point we had to get up to get our own water, our meals were brought to us 10-30minutes apart and the melon salad thing for $20+ is a rip off. The sizes of thing got way smaller and I now wish we just went to the taco truck on the corner and didn’t spend $200 on a meal. Food: 8/10 Value: 3/10 Service: 2/10 Review 1: I love it here! Bar Clara is such a great chill vibe. Great drinks, great food, Aaron the waiter 10/10 great, and apparently they have a dj from 6:30 - close on Thursday's and Fridays. Overall it’s great here! Definitely coming back!

Google
A beautiful rooftop terrace and bar offering an interesting drinks list, but the service we received from the barman was pitiful, and the few food items we ordered from the menu were merely okay. Given that we were seated in the gated part of the terrace, not near the pool, drinks should have been served in glassware, not plastic.

Google
Although the food is nice, I would have liked to see small pool side items available along with the rest of the impressive menu. The menu feels more like a restaurant style rather than a rooftop pool bar and it's hard to catch the vibe. I loved the salad ! It's so flavorful! The octopus is PERFECTLY cooked, as well as the steak. No complaints on the food quality and taste but It would be nice to have smaller handheld items to snack on while mingling by the pool.

Yelp
Food: food was made quick, fresh and with quality ingredients Service: Attentive. Ambiance: beautiful decor, beautiful view, upscale vibe but Victor makes you feel like family We plan to recommend to everyone. It's nice to find a place in the middle of the city with a chill vibe.

Yelp
You would think that a rooftop bar located in the area this place is in would have REAL professional bartenders. It does NOT. When you have to tell the bartenders what ingredients to use and what glassware is proper - you know you are in the company of the D list. Such as this graying hair geezer in photo working on Memorial Day weekend. What a loser. I ask for the RIGHT cocktail and he gives me attitude as if I'm exposing his shortcut goldbricking arse to MAKE the cocktail right. You see: this geezer and the other slopes here have been sloppily hacking their way to a paycheck for so long, they have forgotten what a real bespoke cocktail tastes like. Yes, you fool, absinthe is used to prepare a Sazerac. You don't even know how to make a Jack Rose. Fool. You should be a garbage man instead of a bartender. Greying old middle aged fool. It's sad.

Yelp
Came up from SD with a girlfriend while our kids went to Universal Studios. We decided to find a pool. This spot was awesome!!!! Michael V was soooo fun and took great care of us all day. My friend and I are also in hospitality and Michael crushed. Attentive to everyone. And shout out to Natalie who took over when his shift was done. Highly recommend this pool and also found out it's Bonvoy Marriott!!!! Kale salad add chicken poolside was great.

Yelp
Good vibes with DJ I.AM.JAM, he does such a great job setting the perfect mood for a sunny SoCal day. At the beginning it was empty but then it filled up rather quickly. The bartenders are so welcoming and MIKE was super friendly. He knew how to keep the drinks flowing and also recommended food options. I had multiple 400 Conejos or Mezcal Margaritas which were a fabulous recommendation from MIKE. For food, I had the Tempura Fries and the Wings which were delicious and cooked to perfection. I also loved eating them poolside. I will definitely return for another Sunday Funday! It is such a good time. A must see when visiting Downtown LA.

Yelp
Bar Clara is the rooftop/poolside restaurant atop the Hotel Per La, which is where I was staying and had a dining credit. Clara thankfully is not one of those noisy late-night revelry places that adorn many a rooftop hotel, even in DTLA. Clara closes at 10 pm. The setting is beautiful with a few indoor high tops by the bar and plentiful outdoor seating arrangements both outside the bar and around the entire pool. Views are decent, but there are better around. At 8 pm on a weeknight the place was fairly busy, but some folks were just enjoying the pool. I had a compressed watermelon salad with chili-marinated cucumbers, feta cheese and candied pepitas with added grilled shrimp, plus furikake-dusted tempura fries with Sriracha aioli. The salad and shrimp were tasty, but the fries were on the limp side. I don't know what makes them tempura-ish. I also got a mocktail that was the bartender's choice--good but too much muddled mint for my taste. The prices were on the high side for what you get. Kudos to Michael, the only server on duty who was literally running laps around the pool and patio area. A nice place for a relatively quiet poolside meal and/or drink.

Yelp
10/10 experience service was amazing shoutout victor for the best drinks the ambiance is top tier

Yelp
4.3 stars. Had a delicious sangria (Sangria Sally). I think all the drinks are named after bar owner. The bar had an artistic vibe, and even though it wasn't the tallest rooftop bar I've been to, it was quiet enough on Mother's Day afternoon to have a conversation, relax and enjoy the sun.

Yelp
okay stumbled upon this cute freaking place on my walk back home! Since it was 80 degrees I decided on just coming to check it out. GORGEOUS colorful and inviting. The place wasn't packed considering it was only 1PM but I'm pretty sure around 5 when the sun isn't blazing hot it can get busy. I decided on getting one cocktail and it was The Sun! Pretty strong in my opinion so def slip slow. Bright, and citrus forward is how I would describe it! Can't wait to tell my friends about this cutie little spot.

Yelp
We went this weekend for a company party and everything was outstanding. The service was excellent and the rooftop pool was truly charming - a little oasis in the middle of downtown. Victor's Spicy Blood Orange Margarita is not to be missed (!!!) and we learned his secret to this amazing cocktail - but we are sworn to secrecy! We'll be back for sure!

Yelp
The atmosphere up here is that of a beach getaway! I love the beach vibes and the breeze was amazing! Great views and drinks. The staff is super friendly and there to help! Definitely recommend (bring your swimsuit!)

Yelp
Excellent drinks, excellent view, and all around excellent service! Had a really great experience at this rooftop bar after a not so great day at work. Victor, the bartender was very attentive and even made us some specialty mezcal cocktails. Weather wasn't cooperating but the ambiance, and the old school hip hop playing in the background made up for the lousy weather. Oh and the pool is heated btw. Definitely going back again.

Yelp
We stayed at Hotel Per La and one of our first visits was to the rooftop bar. Getting out of the elevator the entrance is colorful and full of plants. The bar it self was clean and had 1 to 2 bar tenders. We had two drinks that came out delicious but our favorite part was the food. The steak and the chicken wings had so much flavor probably the most we've had for it being considered a bar. The bartender put their time into making our drinks and making sure the presentation of it was nice. The views of this rooftop are amazing we wish we had checked out at night as well.

Yelp
Food is below average but even worse is that when a cockroach interrupts your meal, the restaurant staff will brush it off as an every day occurrence. When my friend and I ran into the indoor bar area (we had been sitting outside by the pool) and alerted our server that a cockroach was hanging out by our table, she shrugged and said "oh yeah, it's Los Angeles. Cockroaches come out at night." While that may be true, this is still a hotel and we're at a restaurant on the ROOF. There's no reason why I should be perfectly happy sharing my meal with a cockroach. Also, I've lived in LA since 2014. Not once has this happened before. Our server did nothing to help and seemed barely willing to move our food indoors.

Yelp
Highly recommend checking out this new rooftop, it's the perfect summer rooftop spot and very spritz friendly! The service is fantastic, we felt taken care of the whole time. I would come back during the day for drinks and small plates, but not for dinner. The food is good overall, although it wasn't the main attraction for us. We enjoyed the sardines but the grilled halloumi and steak had some very off-putting flavor we suspect came from the oil that left a very poor aftertaste. With that said, I recommend feta spread and truffle fries because those were lovely!
google avatar

Mansta A.

Yelp
Cool rooftop bar. The food and drinks are good. The servers are just a bit rude and short with you. There is a parking lot right next to the building for $10 all day- avoid parking at the hotels valet its $55!!! Insanity.
google avatar

Yelp
Great rooftop bar for drinks and a dip in the pool in the sunshine . The rooftop is spacious, and they have great service.

Yelp
Food is delicious, wish I took a pic of my tuna sandwich but it was really good. Fries are bomb. Ryan our bartender took care of us and was so nice. We had great conversations. Didn't eat downstairs but took a look and it's gorgeous. Will eat there next time, but the rooftop was popping.
google avatar

Sara A.

Yelp
Average at best. Very expensive and very different layout compared to when it was the Nomad rooftop. View is pretty but not spectacular.

Yelp
Victor was great, made us his Tropical Mimosa in the photo, and told us about the others he wants us to try. We'll definitely be back. Great rooftop bar and staff!

Yelp
Great rooftop hotel on top of the PERLA. The pool is great and the service provided was exceptional. Michael was our server and the bartender Efrian made great drinks. he made us E-side Rickies and daquiris. The chicken panini was also really good with the focaccia bread. definitely recommend this hotel also for a short trip in downtown LA
google avatar

Shelley K.

Yelp
The food was okay, but I was ill prepared to pay almost $30 for a tiny slice of cake and a teaspoon of ice cream. Added to that was a 4% service charge on top of tax and tip. I'm not going back. I don't care how boutique you are.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Flew in for a work trip and Bar Clara was the PERFECT rooftop patio for a fantastic cocktail, great snacks, and amazing views. Victor was very attentive, friendly, and made the experience five stars. Highly recommend!

Yelp
The best part about this place is the view And the staff. They were out of everything we wanted. The shrimps were good. Everything else was not that good to me. We sent back the steak because it was almost completely raw in the middle but it came back still raw in the middle

Yelp
I'm not one for writing negative reviews, I normally find something good about every establishment, and I was SO excited to visit and review this new rooftop in the heart of LA but to say I was let down is an understatement. Don't get me wrong, the space is so well decorated, pretty for a sunset view, and has the cutest furniture, but because of the staff? I don't think i can come back. I came with my friend on a Tuesday evening and we were very excited to try the rainbow spritzes that the bar advertised for themself and met our reservation time at 6:30pm. We were taken to our table quite quickly but were immediately asked to move from the 4-person couch into a table for 2 in a secluded corner by a gate because of "other reservations." Other than us, there was one other 4 people party on the other side of the rooftop and a couple of people sitting in the bar inside - makes sense, as it was a Tuesday, but it felt a little rude for the to seat and move us to another table while the entire area was so empty :( We waited over 15 minutes after being seated to get our waters, then had to flag down various servers to be waited on. It took us roughly 30 minutes before they took our drink orders, then another 15 minutes to place our food orders. Although the food came out relatively quickly within the next 20 minutes, we had to wait before the staff brought us utensils, straws, napkins, etc. There were roughly 6-8 people working and for our party to go unnoticed felt icky to me. for the food: - truffle fries: delectable, perfectly crisp, pairs well with the chimichurri sauce. amazing & a must order - deviled eggs: it's average! wouldn't necessarily recommend but not the worst item - saganaki: fried halloumi, too sweet, more of a showpiece - pink spritz: spirit forward - purple spritz: 10/10 tasted delicious, would order again

Yelp
I loved the Nomad, and am still sad to see it gone, but we were in dtla last week and decided to visit and try out the new ownership here. We were blown away by the staff upon arriving, everyone was so friendly. We asked about the rooftop bar and one of the staff members walked us to the elevator and pressed the button for us and gave directions for what to do when we arrived. I know things like this don't sound like much but especially post Covid how many times have you walked in somewhere and they seemed super put out? It was really nice to feel welcomed and have people excited to see you. We sat at the bar, it looks very similar to before with the bar area connecting the main walk up and the pool area. It was this past Sunday and there were people but it wasn't too crowded and had good music and a nice laid back vibe. The bartender was great, highlighted her favorites, talked about the cocktails for a bit. One part of the bar menu are drinks done by color, I ordered the orange. We also got a few other drinks all were good and came out quickly. We just had some light snacks. You should try the deviled eggs which were great. I liked the halloumi but thought the sauce they put on top was a little different. It comes to the table on for which is nice, but the food runner didn't tell us how to eat it so we blew it out after a little bit and that was a mistake because it definitely needed to cook more. Overall we had a great time.

Abraham A.

Yelp
This place is good for drinks and music every Sunday music from Dj bossa nova , ambiance of the whole rooftop is relaxing.

Marq M.

Yelp
This past weekend my friends and I had an extremely uncomfortable, rude, and unwanted interaction with a manager named Stephanie. Her services weren't warranted or requested, yet she inserted herself into a situation, making us all uncomfortable. So uncomfortable that we had one drink and collectively decided to remove ourselves from the bar. Stephanie is unprofessional, rude, and probably shouldn't work downtown.

Yelp
We stopped by Bar Clara on a Wednesday around 5:00pm for a drink ( without a reservation) and had a great time! I've been to the rooftop when it was the Nomad hotel and I love the new decor of the rooftop; it's colorful and vibrant. We didn't get food so I can't comment on the food, but my margarit drink was really good. The service was great and the views were beautiful. Definitely a great place to stop by for a drink!

Yelp
Amazing food and great atmosphere! This is one of my new favorite rooftop bars. The food looks and tastes absolutely delicious. We ordered the deviled eggs, sardines, hangar steak, pulpo, sliders, and scallops. Everything was amazing!

Stephanie C.

Yelp
I used to come to the Nomad Hotel rooftop and thought, on a sunny LA day, that I could enjoy a similar vibe. Holy hell was I wrong. I should have known it was a bust when I entered the building and the valet workers gawked at me and then really gotten the hint when the bar service staff didn't make eye contact when I/we walked in. Anyway, found our seats and eventually ordered what were the most offensive cocktails and oysters I've had-- ever. The spritz tasted like an orange Hi-C with bubble water, and whatever my bf ordered tasted like it was entirely syrup concentrate. I foolishly gave this place the benefit of the doubt and ate a damn oyster. Omg YUCK. If you'd told me they found those oysters in a swamp, I'd believed you. They were warm and tasted soo dirty. Not even ocean dirty, but like, I don't even know, man-- just gross. AND had so many pieces of shell, I had to actually stop chewing out of fear of long term damage to my teeth and esophagus. I was so upset, I left two full drinks and 10 uneaten oysters behind. I paid my overpriced bill and left without noticing that homegirl didn't give me my card. So now I have to go back and relive this awful, very much not the Nomad, experience. Avoid this place at all cost. Blegh.

Yelp
Bar Clara is my new favorite rooftop bar! The bartenders really know what they're doing, the spirit selection is so inspired and my god, that sunset is just stunning. I'll have to come back for the food! Don't sleep on this spot, I bet there's gonna be a line out the door come summer.

Yelp
This place is absolutely amazing. The food is great and the customer service is outstanding. We will definitely attend this establishment again and again,

Yelp
I was so excited to try out Bar Clara after seeing it on TikTok. However, my experience was so disappointing. I've never experienced such poor customer service as I did here. Went to catch up with a friend over drinks + take pictures on the beautiful rooftop. We were promptly seated at our reservation time, but after that the staff literally forgot about us. And the worst part was that there were only 2 other parties seated near us. It took us over 20 minutes for someone to grab our drink orders - I think it ended up being one of the managers who took our orders. He checked on us twice saying that he was going to get someone before he took the order himself. Then it took us another 20 minutes for someone to grab our food orders. And we had to flag down waiters for napkins/straws because none of them would look our way. Which was so disheartening as they came and checked on the tables next to us and giving them excellent service. After we ate, we had to go to the bar area and ask for our bill since our waiter did not come to check on us after our food was served and none of them even looked our way when we tried to flag them down. I felt invisible and it felt a little racially motivated. Our food came quickly and was decent and the rooftop views were incredible. Truly one of the most beautiful sunset views in DTLA. But honestly, that is all negated by the quality of customer service I received. I would rate this place 0 stars if I could. I hope management adequately trains their staff and that no one else has the same experience as me.

Laura C.

Yelp
I have been here before when it first opened (food was not so good before) and I have to say the food is fantastic now, and more menu items. We had a female waitress who was great but the male who was helping out needs to go. He messed up the order, brought out the wrong food and then said the computer system went down, which was refuted by the waitress. Anyways the burger and chicken panini was awesome and the best fries ever! The drinks were great as well. The chef, who was very nice came out to check on us as well. We will definitely be back.

Yelp
My office hosted a group event at Bar Clara of approximately 30 people. The bar was understaffed and unable to timely take and deliver drink orders. Attendees didn't receive drinks for over 45 minutes. Managment was apologetic and explained that another large party was underway as well. The bar was unprepared and our office will never host another event there.

Azra V.

Yelp
I came here with two girlfriends yesterday and the staff was out of this world incredible. Eddy (I believe that was his name) at the front door took my friend and I upstairs while giving us a tour of the entire first floor. He was so incredibly kind and welcoming - I don't usually have that experience in most places in LA. So give that guy a raise - because I'll most likely recommend Bar Clara because of him!!!! Our waitress Ruth was exceptional - so funny, super chill, really great at her job, and secured us a couple of seats in the shade. My drink was pretty warm - not sure why but it tasted good regardless! I'd recommend this spot for a chill afternoon with friends!

Yelp
Gotta love those Downtown views from up here! such a beautiful oasis, it has a real Mediterranean feel to it. Drinks are spot on, my favorite is the Bella and yellow spritz. LOVE the octopus, prawn and scallop dishes - so good! Food is much better than what it was under the NoMad rooftop, it also has more of a vibe to it - the new mural gives the space a nice pop.

Yelp
Came here with a group of girlfriends for a Bachelorette shindig. We got to the hotel and must have looked super lost, so the gentlemen in the front at the door escorted us in and then explained where we had to go. One of the guys, I wish I would have gotten his name, was literally the best. There is a small mirrored hallway and he told us we had to go down it and he played photographer for us. I'm sure you're questioning then why the 3 stars, well it's more for the bar. It's rooftop and it has your city views, there are a couple firepits and its really quiet. It's super chill. We went to the bar, and yes, we did have those sashes on so I'm sure that most don't want to have to deal with groups like that, but it seemed like no one wanted to help us. Please keep in mind, we weren't drunk or being obnoxious, the bride to be had requested a rooftop bar crawl. Once we finally got the attention of the bartender he seemed annoyed to have to help us. I am also understanding to the fact that it was about 10pm so I am sure he was probably almost off, but still. I requested 2 different drinks and he said they didn't have the ingredients for them, fine, no problem, I finally got the purple drink and it was good. 7/10 for drinks, 10/10 for ambiance and location, 5/10 for service. It could have been just an off night, but still.

Yelp
New Hip Place in the heart of DTLA.... Rooftop bar that is so Fun to hang out after a days work.

Kyle F.

Yelp
This is now the second time I've been here. Went here for dinner 15 minutes prior to our reservation time. Place was completely empty besides one table at the pool area and one table two away from us. Getting sat and drink orders taken were quick by one server. Water was dropped off by another person like 5-10 minutes later and our drinks were dropped off by the same person, not our actual server. We ordered the hummus and veggies as well that showed up reasonably quick. We ordered this the first time we came here and the hummus was plentiful for the veggies provided as well as a separate side of the tzatziki; the second time however... wow.... Veggies still looked like an edible arrangement however the hummus you were given was like 20% what we originally got and it was sharing the same bowl as the tzatziki. It really makes you feel ripped off when you swear there was so much more when you last went here to now... maybe they ran out of hummus so they threw it together? It would've been more respectful to say they ran out as it was towards the end of the night but 20% of the size, really? Two dishes out of four came out shortly after. The steak was like 1/2 size it was before but was still good. The cauliflower dish was good in quality however the flavors felt like they weren't matched right. We had two more dishes for the other people in our party. One tuna dish showed up 30 minutes after the last two dishes. The melon salad didn't show up until we asked for it... I guess they forgot?! I had to get up from my table and ask for the salad and for the pitcher of water...yes, I got up to ask for the pitcher to fill my tables glasses because not one person came over and asked how we were doing... The salad ended coming out 20 minutes later for an EXTREMELY SMALL dish for $22. Our server came over for the second time this evening and we notated the wait, he said that management was here tonight so people were a little stressed, okay I get that. Except the whole evening we watched as people hung out by the bar and completely ignored us. We literally don't need any special attention besides seeing if we wanted water. All in all, our first experience with Aaron and his manager made the experience. Getting forgotten about for a dinner you made a reservation for with the excuse ownership is there is sad and disappointing. Would be nice for someone to actually care to run a luxury restaurant with quality food and service worth the price they're asking. I guess this isn't it...

Yelp
My friends and I really enjoyed dinner here. The food was great, especially the fattoush, and the environment was perfect for a relaxing evening out. I would highly recommend this spot for a low key evening out or starting out for small bites and a drink.
