The 33 Best Restaurants In Melbourne 2023

"If you find yourself wandering around the city late at night with a hankering for indulgent French food, get to Lonsdale Street and look for the door marked “MGX.” Beyond it, you’ll find a raucous, dimly-lit basement bar where you can easily lose the rest of your night. The same crew is behind dive bar Heartbreaker and speakeasy The Everleigh, and are known for their top-notch cocktails. Order the Manhattan and the cheeseburger with bordelaise and pomme frites, all served until 2:30am on Friday and Saturday nights." - ellen fraser

A very pleasant surprise in the heart of the CBD. The steak for two was amazing and cooked to perfection. It was melting as we were eating it. The only downside in terms of food was the creme brulee that was very cold near the bottom. The service was spot on! The atmosphere was very good, however the lighting could be a bit more bright as we were struggling to read the menu and others were using their phone's torch to order. Overall, we will be visiting again!

I had a really lovely dinner at Bar Margaux. I had the burgers, and it was well cooked and delicious. The chips were yum and had a great portion size. The staff were really friendly and attentive. It was a really warm night, and they kept refilling our water, which was great. It's very dimly lit and a nice atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend Bar Margaux for dinner, especially before a theatre show as it's close to Her Majesty's Theatre at about a 2 minutes walk.

Beautiful interior and vibes from this restaurant! Service was super friendly and went through the menu with us, giving us recommendations on food and drinks. Highly recommend the escargot! Was my first time trying snails and these were the highlight of my night! Soaked in that garlic butter paired with the sourdough - absolutely delicious! Meat was also cooked relatively well and accompanying sauces were flavourful.

High expectations were not met! My son and I have travelled the length and breadth of Melbourne over the last two years sampling over twenty of the city's best burger venues as recommended by the Broadsheet website. We came to Bar Margaux with high expectations, but unfortunately walked away without them being met. The staff were friendly and attentive, but the food did not hit the mark. We ordered two of the L'Américain (cheeseburger with fries) that comes with a choice of a lager or pale ale. Neither of us were drinking so we went with a couple of soft drinks instead. The fries were on par, but the beef pattie in the burger was NQR. The sting in the tail came with the bill. We hadn't had the beers that came as part of the "Golden Hour" offer, so I was surprised to discover we had been charged for the soft drinks we ordered. I questioned this as I was paying the bill, but was told quite emphatically that it didn't matter that we hadn't had the beers and that we had to pay for the soft drinks separately.

Bar Margaux is a vibe. What a lovely bistro hotel bar vibe. The floor is checkered black and white and warm lighting was warm and homely. Menu is a classic, staff were warm and fantastic to accommodate to our needs - especially since we rocked up at 10.30pm for a table for 5. Food felt quite authentic French style bistro. Sauces were made well and we were able to share plates after a theatre production and have a discussion with a near and dear bunch of friends. Although none of the dishes stood out specifically to me, more can be done to improve the duck burger. It felt one dimensional, and would be able to benefit from a strong slaw / sauce and alternate textures.

Bar Margaux in Melbourne is a fantastic place to dine. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate, and the service is impeccable. The menu is small but diverse and everything is delicious. The appetizers are particularly noteworthy and the selection of wine is impressive. I had the pleasure of trying the steak, which was cooked to perfection and the sauce that accompanied it was incredible. The desert was a perfect finish to the meal, the chocolate fondant was rich and decadent. Overall, the food and service were both outstanding, I would highly recommend Bar Margaux to anyone looking for a special dining experience in Melbourne.

After admiring Bar Margaux for a long time on the gram, we finally made our first visit for our wedding anniversary—and boy it did not disappoint! From the moment we stepped inside, the moody lighting and effortlessly cool atmosphere set the perfect tone for a romantic evening. The service was impeccable, with staff who went above and beyond to make us feel special without being the least bit intrusive. The cocktails were refined and sexy, each one crafted to perfection. As for the food, everything was phenomenal, but the standout dish was hands-down the steak tartare. We had a truly beautiful night and will absolutely be back.

What a great quaint find in Melbourne’s CBD! Look for a set of stairs heading down from Lonsdale Street and you’ll find it! The big doors open to beautiful lighting and welcoming staff! What a place! We ate snails and seafood for entree and shared salmon and steak for mains with a side of tasty beans! Delicious! Great beverage options available if you wish. The staff were attentive and lovely. The place was loud but not too loud (we had no issues asking the French waitress to repeat the special). I have to say the bathrooms are divine with warm hand towels instead of paper (it’s the small things). It had ambience and was a great French experience to dine if you haven’t yet!

Yelp
As we searched for late dinner spots upon returning from our Penguin Parade day-tour, Bar Margaux came up. It's situated in the basement level. Upon descending some stairs, we came to the host stand, and were seated shortly. It's rather dark inside the bar restaurant. I suppose it goes with the late night vibe. For me, however, it proved challenging to see the menu and the food. Some sort of perfume is used in the bar restaurant as well, which was apparent upon entering the bar restaurant. Being allergic to perfume, I was glad they found a spot for us where the smelll is not as strong. The hamburger was good and the cromesquis was decent. The escargot, however, was disappointing; the escargot themselves was so so, and the bread that came with us was burnt beyond edible in some spots.

Yelp
Stopped by for dinner with a couple of friends. We showed up early and didn't have reservations. The host let us know we'd be able to sit but have a 2 hr limit which was no problem at all! All the servers were super friendly and came by to check on us often. Drinks were tasty and the food was even better! For our first meal landing in Melbourne after a 19 hr travel day, I couldn't have been happier! The music they played wasn't too loud so we were all able to speak to each other without screaming. It was very dark in there so reading the menu was a little difficult. I was so hungry I only got one bad pic of our steak tartare that was absolutely delicious!!!!!!! Overall I'd definitely recommend this place!

Yelp
Down a flight of stairs hidden away is this French restaurant. The ambiance was perfect the food rocked and the drinks were, well we are in Australia and the liquor is usual light. As always the company and discussion made the evening.

Yelp
Recently opened Bar Margaux has already been the recipient of several industry awards. It definitely qualifies as a hidden bar, so while it's very French, it is also very Melbourne. The fit out is all tiles and dark wood, with moody lighting and the flicker of candlelight on the tables. I noticed several people using their phone's torch to read the menu - yes it's that dark! Definitely recommend for date night. The food is great. I tried the daily special when I visited - it changes depending on the day of the week. Lots of French classics. There is a decent wine list and interesting selection by the glass - ask the attentive staff for recommendations. There is happy hour each night with specials like oysters and champagne. Tres chic. My only gripe, and loss of star, is for the bar tending. The cocktails were not great, and one request was completely stuffed up. Stick to the wine and beer and all will be good.
