The 5 Elements of a Flawless Highball | Bon Appétit

"This Tokyo bar is known for an ice-less version of the Japanese highball that emphasizes chilled whisky and minimal presentation; by serving the drink without ice it showcases subtle whisky flavors and a precise balance of carbonation and temperature. Its spare, disciplined approach to the highball has served as a model for bartenders studying Japan's highball traditions." - ByElyse Inamine

Obviously, there are very mixed reviews on this bar, and I guess it comes down to personal preference. For me this was one of my Favorite experiences in Tokyo. There is a strict policy of no loud conversation, but if you want that don't go to a listening bar. I found the staff to be very friendly, especially when they know you are into the music. There is a great selection of Japanese and Scottish Whiskey, and also a very decent Guiness on tap. The Music on the two nights I was there was a mix of Jazz, Soul and classic Rock (Bowie, Stones, Kinks, Lou Reed). I politely asked the DJ for some Led Zep and he seemed happy to do so. The Sound system is perfect, and it has a projector for the occasional Live Performance. Like many bars there is a cover charge, but bar snacks are free. Only negative for me was the cigarette smoke, but that is Tokyo for you.

Maybe my best bar experience ever - great drinks, atmosphere and music selection. Regarding the noise policy - what other reviews may see as a downside, really added to the experience. Both staff and guests really felt present. Like entering a different time and place. Great prices as well !

Absolutely the worst bar experience I’ve ever had. We came as a group of 5, ready to enjoy the night, and were shockingly chased out by the staff without reason. The rudeness and arrogance were unbelievable. Instead of hospitality, we got humiliation. Drinks? Overpriced and not worth it. Atmosphere? Toxic. This place clearly doesn’t respect paying customers. Save your money and your dignity — stay far away from this bar.”

The most unique listening bar I’ve ever been to. The sound system is extraordinary - truly world-class. Unlike typical Japanese service, the staff here are distant and do the bare minimum. It’s clear they don’t want tourists, and honestly, I hope it stays that way. It adds to the authenticity and charm. Drinks are basic. No crazy cocktails, and that’s exactly right for this place. Smoking is allowed inside - again, it fits. In terms of music, it's just the best songs ever made. Radiohead, Bowie, Queen, Sting (nothing trendy, just timeless).

It’s true - guests are not permitted to talk above a whisper (which is rather strange considering the lighting is unpleasantly bright, like a school gymnasium). FYI, foreigners are sometimes asked to leave for talking. Middle-aged, male staff only. Generally, sulky and impolite. Most of the time they stand around shaving ice trying to be cool. Regulars equally unfriendly. Sound system works fine, but staff only play typically eclectic and/or unsuitable music whilst flatly refusing all suggestions and requests. Can’t say this adds anything to the ambience described above. Drinks are average, but overly-priced compared to similar establishments in the area. There is no food other than some stale nuts and banana chips in large communal jars. Lots of cigarette smoke and dirty ashtrays. In summary, if you like drinking overpriced alcohol in a bright room amid a thick cloud of smoke, rudely poured by miserable men, whilst listening to crap music and not talking to anyone, then I would highly recommend this place to you.

If you’re coming with more than 4 people, don’t bother – this bar strictly doesn’t allow groups larger than 4. We came with a few friends, and instead of any flexibility or polite explanation, the staff was rude and literally chased us out. The experience was disappointing and unwelcoming. Definitely not a place for friendly gatherings or good vibes.

Great bar! Especially if you love good music brought to you by a serious dj who knows his vinyls. None of their cocktails are on the menu, let them tell you what’s good. Not cheap and smoking is allowed inside — something to keep in mind. But totally worth the experience! We stayed until they closed up, would recommend this to anyone who wants an unexpected night out in Tokyo
