14 Best New Bars to Try in San Francisco Right Now

"The building at 2295 Market Street has been reincarnated many times over the years, but this time around it’s backed by local bar pro Colm O’Brien, previously of Hi Tops, who opened Bar49 in June 2024. The “49” is a nod to the city’s 49 square miles, and the bar’s lengthy lineup of 49 beer and wine options, per the website. There are bites and larger plates to keep barflies happy, such as flatbreads, sliders, loaded fries, shepherd’s pie, plus bangers and mash." - Dianne de Guzman, Eater Staff

San Francisco’s New Restaurant Openings

"Bar 49, founded by a former Hi Tops manager, is a Castro restaurant and bar with a bit of an English twist. Besides the typical bar food of burgers and fries, they’re also offering fish and chips, shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, and corned beef and cabbage. To wash that all down, they have a long menu of 49 beers and wines. " - ricky rodriguez

This San Francisco Hi Tops Bar Pro Is Taking Over the Former Bagdad Cafe Space - Eater SF

"The former Bagdad Cafe location will see new life again: Hoodline reports that Hi Tops co-manager Colm O’Brien will take over the distinctive 2295 Market Street space and reopen it as Bar 49 this year, possibly as soon as May. The name is a nod to the city’s 49 square miles, and already O’Brien promises a hefty drink lineup with over 49 beer and wine options, and 12 beers on draft. He shared with Hoodline that the bar will also feature a food menu comprised of appetizers, shared options, and “a short easy dinner menu of bar food.” Bar 49 is an exciting prospect for the neighborhood, especially since the space saw plenty of turnover in the last decade or so. Curse or not, the fact is that since Bagdad Cafe left, a number of restaurants have flitted in and out: Criolla Kitchen, Sliderbar, Ovok, Castro Republic, and (most recently) Los Amigos Diner, which lasted only six months." - Dianne de Guzman

Bar 49 is a great spot for drinks in the heart of Castro. Lots of natural light and great for a sunny day. They have some good food options too. We ordered a grilled fish sandwich and chicken tenders, which were both great. For drinks, we ordered a margarita slushie and the 7x7 which was a mezcal cocktail with raspberry, both were delicious.

We stopped in for drinks and ended up staying for dinner! The fish and chips were sooo good, crispy yet still tender. We munched on charcuterie and hung out, great addition to the neighborhood.

Thank the cosmos that this prime location finally has a tenant worthy of it. For a long time, this beautiful corner has been the resting place of terrible brunch place after terrible brunch place - but with Bar49 the Castro gets a nice wine / beer bar with very decent food. It's moody and chill, a great place to go when you're not necessarily looking for hustle and bustle, but rather want a nice night out. Service and staff are awesome. My only complaints? More plants would really warm up the space (look at those windows! come on!) and it would be nice if the bar was a bit moodier after dark vs playing pop music videos at all times.

Google
love this place! stellar service, amazing people watching, and irish breakfast keep me coming back. great value and they have excellent hazy IPA and margaritas. dinner is also delicious (especially the bangers and mash).

Amazing place to go for a night out with friends! Drinks & food are amazing; highly recommend the chicken tenders, onion rings, fries, mozzarella sticks and pizzas. Make sure you try their cosmo and Moscow mule! Very friendly staff as well!

Google
It's an odd shaped space. Many businesses have tried to make a go of it there without much success. It should just go back to what it had been for years, the Baghdad Cafe. Some of the food items are tasty and others are too trendy and trying to hard. Portions are a good size. The beverage menu is almost all beer but the food offered does not really pair up well with beer. There are a very few other beverage choices if you are not a beer drinker. The unique paint color that has been chosen as their decor color does not lend itself to a comfortable atmosphere.

Love this place! Amazing food, drinks, and service. Especially the chicken tenders and mozzarella sticks, and we loved the cocktails, too (try The Empress for sure)

Really enjoyed our time at Bar 49 during our recent trip to San Francisco! Nice drink options, the food was delicious (we had brunch and dinner there two different days!) and the service was excellent. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Great selection of beers and good food. What's not to like! Stopped in after a show near by and was pleasantly impressed. Very nice staff, and a chill atmosphere. We'll be back, had the burger and will have the shepherds pie next time, it looked delicious!.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Great service, attentive staff, good drinks, good atmosphere. Finally something in this space, which has been doomed before with bad restaurants, might stick around!

Yelp
This triangular piece of prime commercial real estate has seen a worrying rotation of eateries try and fail to make a go of it since the dependably greasy 24/7 Bagdad Cafe shuddered its doors in 2011 (review: https://yelp.to/14V00U670z). Some like Criolla Kitchen and Castro Republic were valiant efforts that couldn't maintain a foothold on this corner. Others cafes and taquerias I can't even remember. I have more optimism this time because owner Colm O'Brien has been a co-manager at Hi-Tops (review: https://yelp.to/v1ShlJpRKl) and appears to get what the neighborhood wants versus what someone else thinks what the Castro needs. It's in soft opening now, and I stepped in based on a recommendation I received from Eric at Lookout across the street (review: https://yelp.to/eRRyXSJ6yk). I sat at the bar and was immediately greeted by both the server and the manager. The libations are primarily beer and wine, though I decided to order the $13 Frozen Margarita from the This & That menu. I was informed they used agave rather than tequila, which was fine by me since I just had a slushie at Lookout. It was quite refreshing with a soothing kick (photo: https://yelp.to/O3ot5EhuB3). I also wanted to try something off their food menu, so I ordered the $13 Bar49 Salad, a fresh mix of butter lettuce, tomato, cucumber, chickpeas, olive, bits of cheddar, and egg. It was a bit drenched with their creamy house vinaigrette, but I still liked it (photo: https://yelp.to/DO9DCbUfK9). They have fish & chips and corned beef & cabbage among other pub fare, so I'll need to come back for that. FOOD / DRINK - 4 stars...good start on the menu, the margarita worked fine with the agave AMBIANCE - 4 stars...nice, chill vibe SERVICE - 4.5 stars...super attentive TOTAL - 4 stars...hoping this one survives and thrives RELATED - Exploring the Castro? Yelp
Basically I'm rating the food at this point because I'm not really a drinker per se other than the Arnold Palmer I had which was excellent . The tea and the lemonade in Arnold Palmer, where it struck a nice balance they did not seem overly processed and the tea had a fresh flavor to it, which is always nice. I ordered the chicken fingers and they were so perfectly deep-fried, it was a treat to eat something. We also got the brussels sprout salad which was a crowd pleaser, and then the shepherds pie, and the sliders. We gobbled up everything and we enjoyed it absolutely Under good company and a nice relaxed atmosphere. At this place you order upfront everything is casual and friendly. They do have a large choice of beers my friends that accompanied me had the frose and frozen margarita. This bar it has great windows where you can watch people go by. It's very central located in the Castro on Market St, this is starting to get a following so a place to keep an eye on for sure.

Yelp
Had a lot of hope for this space! The remodel looked good from the outside and was pretty crowded when it first opened. We decided to give it a try on a quieter night. First off, the interior is nice but there's a lack of seating. Only a few tables and a few seats at the bar. The people who work here are awesome and friendly. Very attentive and prompt. However, the wine list is pretty weak. Not sure who they consulted when creating their selections but they picked cheap wine and are selling it at a premium. And it's not even good cheap wine. Wine list by the bottle was ok but overall they have alot to learn from some of the wine bars in the area. Besides the wine we both ordered the burger. The burger tasted like it was from Costco and was in the freezer before they threw it on the grill. It also seemed like it was one of those pre seasoned frozen burgers. Just not great flavors and consistency. The fries were ok. Unfortunately, we will not be returning. The people are nice but the wine list leaves a lot to be desired and the food turned us off. It's too bad as we were really hoping for a winner for this space.

Yelp
Had a fantastic time at this very welcomed new eatery in the Castro. Thinking of a place to eat at in the Castro has always been alittle tricky but this may very well be a new "go to" place for me. Our attentive server had positive energy and the space was full of sunlight with floor to ceiling windows. There was a variety of seating from low tables to high tops to the bar and bar seating along the windows filled with patrons which made the place feel vibrant and alive. The food was great and menu well curated. Had corned beef sliders with steak fries. Each fry had great crispy texture and was well seasoned, no mushy bland stray fries here. The sliders were a perfect size when wanting something snacky/not too filling and especially if pairing it with carby beer. The corned beef was sliced thick and was juicy. There are big plates available as well, will have to try them next time.

Yelp
Many things to love about Bar49, great new addition to the neighborhood with fun vibes and solid food! - Welcoming, friendly and efficient staff made me feel taken care of. - Athletic Brewing on draft, plus many other NA options! As a former drinker, having an NA beer on draft makes a big difference to feeling comfortable in a bar. (Beer and wine only for now but I overheard the bartender say there's spirits coming.) - Loved the fish and chips, the peas and coleslaw were also pretty good (and I'm from London!).

Yelp
Not very good customer service- I came in late last year and was barely acknowledged - however the owners/bar tenders see very attentive of the young women next to me. Poor customer service and mediocre food. I did not feel welcome there, I would not go back. The wine was terrible as well.

Elaine O.

Yelp
Hands down the best drinks in town. If you drink is Old Fashioned, this is the place to get it. Other drinks were also delicious. Haven't tried the food yet, but love the vibe of the place.

Yelp
This bight and shiny new spot in the Castro has great food and delicious drinks on tap. Colm, who runs the place, is a breath of fresh air. The food is very tasty and fresh. The vibe is like a grown up mini Gastropub. I find myself going every week.

Yelp
Loving this new neighbourhood bar. Good selection of beers and wines. Haven't tried the food yet but the sliders on someone's plate looked delicious! Great place to catch up with some friends or for a casual weeknight hangout.
google avatar

Yelp
Space was nice, staff was friendly but maybe under trained. Guinnesses came out in under 2 minutes which normally Take 5 to 6. The brown bread was not brown bread, but was a yeasted wheat bread . The shepherd's pie (AKA cottage pie) was tasty. A few things that they could fix I will try them again if they get this under control.

Yelp
Can't be more thrilled to see this space occupied, and by a business that has diversified itself in the mark. Such a great transformation of the space! Food has everything to satisfy You pallet. Great bar/pub "go to's" such as salads, burgers and flatbreads. Most notable are the references to the owners home...fish&chips, Shepard pie, Banger & Mash! The owner has done a wonderful job by bringing newness to the Castro!

Yelp
I get REALLY upset when businesses don't update their hours. It's the most basic requirement for running a business. A group of friends and I walked quite a bit to get to Bar49 from another bar because we had heard good things and that it's still relatively new. We got there on Friday close to midnight and they were closed or closing (seats up and someone was sweeping) but on here it says it closes at 2AM.

Naseem N.

Yelp
I had an awesome experience at Bar49 on a Friday night! Easily the best bar food I've had in SF. The chicken tenders, mozzarella sticks, and onion rings are an absolute must-try!

LJ L.

Yelp
The food is dismal. Beyond dismal. Like it was fried elsewhere and microwaved on site. Came here so hungry that McDonalds would have tasted like a Michelin Star-level meal, and my husband and I couldn't finish either of our "meals." Offensive in every sense of the word. $22 fish and chips that taste like SOUR seafood and funnel cake dough, and $22 "Shepards pie" that tasted worse than an expired hungry man meal. Truly abysmal. Just wretched.

Peter M.

Yelp
Great castro bar with cool layout. Very good food and alcohol options (Veuve Cliquot for only $80)! Service is always excellent. Highly recommend the sliders, tenders & weekend brunch flatbread (but there's plenty more to choose from).

Christopher V.

Yelp
What a relief! Finally, a worthy and unique restaurant to take over this seemingly cursed corner in the Castro! Not only does Bar49 bring a new type of food choice to a neighborhood that is lousy with taquerias, coffee shops, and mediocre restaurants, but it also does it with style and class that is both sophisticated and much-needed for the area. The ambiance in the space with its upgrades to the design, especially the new wood low-top large communal table and the high-top seating against the window makes the space look soooo much bigger and and open and inviting. The three times I have been in, the staff have all been absolutely wonderful, attentive, knowledgable, friendly, and talkative. They were able to explain any questions I had about the EXTENSIVE beer and wine list (my favorite was the Bar49-exclusive Sauv Blanc) and never came off as too stressed to take the time to share their expertise. And the food! Again, when I say the Castro is sorely lacking in food choices, it's true. Seeing a restaurant open with a concept that offers choices you can't get elsewhere is a relief. The times I have been, I've had the fries with curry sauce, the Brussels sprouts salad, and the fish & chips, and all three have been outstanding. Shout out ESPECIALLY to the fish & chips. Definitely one of the best fish & chips meals I've had, including the time I've spent in England and Scotland. The pieces of fish were sizable (you get three pieces) and the breading was outstanding. It came out super crunchy and flavorful. The peas were sweat and a great compliment to the fish. And their chips (fries) are HUGE. Seriously these are the biggest fries I've ever seen. When you pair them with their amazing Irish curry sauce, they are almost a meal on their own. I went with a friend who is from London and said the Bangers & Mash was some of the best UK food he's had in the U.S. (can't attest to that as I'm pescatarian, but high-praise nonetheless). I can't say enough about this place. I am SO happy that we finally have a restaurant in that venerable space to fill in the gap of losing Bagdad Cafe so many years ago that has never truly found the right footing with so many previous attempts at the space. 10/10 will definitely be going for dinner more often.

Yelp
Nice place, fun crowd. Service was excellent. I think they finally gotten this space figured out and their interior design is lovely. Yay!!
google avatar

Alexander L.

Yelp
The remodel on this place is absolutely gorgeous. Such a stark contrast to the last place to inhabit this space. There is a vast selection of beers, wines, and slushies. I had the corned beef hash and it was delicious, packed with corned beef and flavor, would highly recommend for brunch. The staff was friendly and prompt. Highly recommend.

Yelp
We checked out Bar49 this past weekend and were very happy with our experience. We all loved the food, the friendly and attentive staff, and the fun ambience. We'll definitely be back!

William M.

Yelp
It's a nice casual place, had the burger and side salad. Burger was perfectly cooked, I liked the seasoning, fresh veggies , nice bun great pickle. My co dinner had the fish and chips and enjoyed both. Wine section is weak but I am sure it will improve, but nice sections of beer. Service was very attentive
google avatar

Norman M.

Yelp
Great food. Great service. Chill and casual atmosphere. I'm sober but my dining companion was a normie and she said the beer was great. Grateful to have this new neighborhood gem right around the corner.

Dolores M.

Yelp
Setting is great. Service friendly and prompt. Great house wine and delicious burgers and fries.

Yelp
Corned beef hash made with what seemed pressed deli meat? Very unsatisfying and greasy. Worst Bloody Mary I've ever had, I had to send it back, but got to keep the sour taste in my mouth. The server might have mentioned that there wasn't a full liquor license at the beginning of service. I could've avoid the Bloody Mary with the vodka substitution. The place was empty that should've been my clue. Very nice bathroom tho.

Yelp
The best new bar to come into the Castro in years. The staff is amazing and the food and drinks are even better!! So happy to have a successful business in this space!!!

Jason S.

Yelp
The beers were fine. However the food was absolutely disgusting. I can't even begin to describe how nasty the "fish and chips" are. It was three very small, mealy, very thin, dark pieces of fish. The batter was soggy and the fish very oily. After one bite I was so grossed out we just decided to finish our drinks and go. You would think someone would have noticed the food untouched given the place was half empty during pride. Yet nobody even came to even ask how everything was or check on us at all. Ugh . I so wanted this place to succeed given the turnover at this location. I give it three months tops before closing. You can always tell when a place just isn't going to make it. Definitely will never be going back but I wish it well nonetheless. Hopefully they can turn it around before all the negative reviews start rolling in.

Ara K.

Yelp
I came here with some friends from HiTops on a Thursday. It was fairly quiet inside, with a few customers and one server (it filled up later). I got a glass of their premium Malbec and a flatbread. My friend got an Impossible burger slider. The wine was sour and undrinkable. The flatbread dough tasted like saltines and must have been microwaved. My friend's slider was good, though he mentioned that "the bread was not stale this time". Service was prompt. Overall, pretty mid.

Lilia R.

Yelp
Comfy place to meet for a drink but the food needs help. The flatbread tastes like a frozen meal. The fish slider needs more seasoning, the Cesar salad was decent but less dressing would have been better. The French fries were good. Luckily food can always be improved. I'll certainly go back for a drink but I may skip on the food to give them time get better.

Josette T.

Yelp
Nice new spot taking up a long vacant prime location on market. Loved the bangers and mash, and the cozy interior. Had a great experience with friendly female bartender with curly hair. Will be back, loved the service!

Stacey P.

Yelp
We happen to stop by for brunch and let me tell you this is now one of our favorite places to come in the Castro. Excellent food, great service, and awesome space. Highly recommend

Michael B.

Yelp
It looks like the crabby Yelpers are ready to pile on after just a few weeks of being open. Don't listen to them. Any new restaurant/bar will have kinks to work out the first months, but it's a lovely space with good food and great service. I recommend the shepherd's pie. Yum!!

Kevin W.

Yelp
Sorry to say, but this is another uninspired Castro restaurant. The flatbread was limp, the croutons in the Caesar tasted like they come from a grocery bag. The decor is bland. Service was pleasant.

Hamid R.

Yelp
Service was great. Atmosphere was fine. Satff were nice. Generally I had a pleasant experience here.

Doug W.

Yelp
was hoping this would be a better experience. I ordered a drink and an entree and was told immediately "do I want to close out?". horrible customer service and not even a chance for a tip even if I liked the meal, which was mediocre at best. bartender/server clueless and it took 25 minutes to recieve on of five entrees on the menu. I won't be back.
