29 Croissants to Try Around NYC

"If you like your croissant soft, almost squishy, this one is for you. The inside of Barachou’s croissant is dense and rich, and provides tensile strength with no crunch or crackle. This West Village bakery specializes in tiny cream puffs in a myriad of flavors, and their French flan and cinnamon buns are justly celebrated. $4.50." - Robert Sietsema, Eater Staff

"A small pink French bakery specializing in tiny cream puffs with various fillings and toppings. The bakery offers a flan pâtissier ($7), a wedge of super-dense custard pie covered with gelatin instead of syrup. The crust and slight sweetness make it rich enough to be a meal." - Robert Sietsema

Google
I have been trying to find the best cinnamon buns. I seen this place that they had very good cinnamon buns. Their cinnamon buns are not the best. They are OK. If they had more glaze on it, it would be better and if they were warmed up. It was OK, I liked their flourless chocolate cake. It was good. If you go and get a cinnamon bun from here, make sure that they heat it up because it is definitely much better heat it up and see if you can get extra glaze.

Love the flans, rasperry almond tartelettes and the delicious cream puffs. Service is always so friendly

Google
Wow! The chocolate-covered cinnamon bun topped with nuts was divine. Happened to pass by this pastry shop, and the display looked inviting. Was hankering for some chocolatey concoction, and this caught my eye. Wasn’t disappointed at all. It wasnt cloyingly sweet. Just good enough. Yum!!! This is a pastry shop in the West Village that specializes in “French cream puffs and other French and American inspired sweet delicacies.” Well, after having this cinnamon bun, I am so going back for their specialty. The store is a small cute but bright space, but they do have indoor seating. There are 2 tables outside if you fancy outdoor seating while enjoying your selection. Glad i stopped by here. I highly recommend!

This is a cafe on the Christopher street, which is 2 blocks from the red line MTA Christopher street station or the Path station. This is a nice neighborhood. The staff is nice and the dessert is delicious. I like the puff. The cafe is comfortable and there is sufficient space. I have ordered 2 Paris Brest (which is a puff with hazelnut mousse) and a flourless chocolate cake.

Oh my goodness gracious! Magical is what y’all are. The many many delicious and unique offerings makes the decision hard and now I’m already planning my next visit. Struck with a sense of awe, you guys are one of the many many places that makes New York the most delicious city on earth ❤️ The super friendly counter person adds to this delightful experience! So many choices = so many more future visits! Yum is how you make me feel 🙏🏽

Google
I like the fruit tartelettes, and in particular the raspberry, pear, and pumpkin. I have also tried the marble cake, almond croissant, cinnamon bun, cheese puffs (pictured below), chocolate and chocolate flourless cakes, and all are always very fresh, and of great quality. The cream puffs are of course good and what barachou is known for -> in particular I like the chocolate, pistachio, hazelnut, and raspberry.

Google
So far my favorite flavor of mini puffs is honey! For some reason, the one I got was super crunchy outside, creamy and soft inside with filling. The hazelnut one was good too, but the puff was not that crunchy that day. I also tried their opera cake and flan. They are not bad choices!

Google
Rebecca at Barachou ran a delightful creampuff decorating class for our daughter's birthday party. The girls had a great time making whipped cream and filling and decorating their creampuffs. Rebecca was able to deftly manage the kitchen, explaining everything and helping the girls along the way. Thank you!

Yelp
A cute little shop with cute little cream puffs! Theirs are a perfectly sized treat that makes a great gift/event dessert (think: preschooler birthdays, teacher appreciation gifts). Each flavor is so pretty to look at and divine to taste. I particularly love the Raspberry with the fresh fruit on top as well as the gold-dusted Dulce de Leche. The counter staff is always nice too. It's a place where I stop in when I need a quick pick-me-up when I'm in the neighborhood.

Yelp
This is a super cute coffee shop that has a cozy feeling to it. When you walk in the aroma of freshly baked pastries fill the air. I unfortunately did not try any if the delicious looking pastries as I only got a cappuccino. Which was ok nothing special. They have a few tables inside to sit and enjoy your coffee/ pastries at but its a bit tight fitting as I said this is a pretty small coffee shop. The lady was nice who was taking my order but it is only her working so it takes a little time to get your order but she was nice. If I am in the area again I would come back and try out an iced drink of theirs. If you find yourself in this area I would stop by.

Yelp
I've always enjoyed the Barachou in Upper West Side, but so happy to see that this West Village location actually has seating. Also, shout out to the reviewer that recommended the Tirami'chou because A) how perfectly named and fun to say is that! and B) it was one of the best desserts I've had recently. We got the hazelnut one (other options were chocolate and vanilla) and it was the perfect equation of tiramisu - lady fingers + choux pastry + nutella. There are so many fun flavors of cream puffs (though it felt like less than the UWS location) and the mini size makes it perfect to try multiple flavors + have a better ratio of choux pastry to cream.

Yelp
I was on IG and saw their page, everything looked delicious so I wanted to stop by. It was a hot day but the woman helping me said they should be ok to take home. The store is cute inside, easy to find on 8th ave. I decided to get a box of 6 to try different flavors. I picked the strawberry which was the flavor of the month, lemon meringue, a classic, a chocolate, and two dulce de leche. When I got on the train, I tried the strawberry which was AMAZING. It was topped with a mound of whipped cream and garnished with a strawberry slice. It was filled with more cream and strawberry puree. Really delicious. They were the perfect size, just enough for a little treat. I definitely want to go back to try other things, they also have cinnamon rolls once a week. Highly recommend stopping by.

Yelp
I've had cream puffs from various Asian bakeries like Alimama and French ones like Petit Chou so I was expecting a certain size for the cream puffs. Hence, I was surprised to see how tiny they were! They were super mini cream puffs and are sold by a single for 3.30, and then boxes in increments of 3. The box of six was 18. The main pro of getting the mini ones is being able to sample 3 different flavors for the size of one cream puff at the other spots, but the con is paying more for the 3 mini ones than one large one at the other places. Overall, I'm glad I tried this place and if I have a craving for mini cream puffs, I'll venture out here but I'm used to and prefer the regular sized ones for now.

Yelp
We took a cream puff decorating class here and the experience was really fun! You get to decorate 15 cream puffs (per person) with fresh made meringue and whipped cream and various toppings! They were absolutely delicious, delightful to make and such a treat to take home. We love this little cafe for their cream puffs and the class, taught by the owner Rebecca, didn't disappoint either! Highly recommend as a date activity or solo if you're just ready to gorge on some cream puffs! Totally worth the time and money!

Yelp
Really cute shop but I've had better cream puffs elsewhere! I tried a handful of the flavors including classic, raspberry, mango, hazelnut, and chocolate. The mango was the star of the bunch. We didn't love the hazelnut as much as we were expecting to. The cream on the outside of the classic was nice and airy but inside felt dry.
google avatar

Yelp
4/5 but only because the original "flavor" isn't the best. It's light, but too light that it's become bland. Especially after you've tasted ones like mango and passionfruit, especially since they're a bit tart. I haven't tried that many fillings yet but am already in love with the mango one. Surprisingly the passion fruit one isn't filled with passion fruit but something else, but still amazing! Very sweet staff here too
google avatar

Donna Z.

Yelp
I'm not usually a big dessert person but wow these cream puffs are delicious! I got Tiramisu, Passion Fruit, Pistachio, Honey (Special), Mango, Lemon Meringue Cream Puffs and out of these 6, my top 3 were: 1. Lemon Meringue 2. Tiramisu 3. Mango I'm love that these aren't too sweet. I would totally get these again! The only thing I didn't like was the passion fruit wasn't filled with a passion fruit filling.

Yelp
Love the wide arrange of choux pastries to choose from. There were plenty of fruit flavors and then more decadent choices. The tiramichou was such a brilliant concept but unfortunately the execution kind of fell short solely because there was BARELY any choux in the cup. It doesn't quite make sense to call it tiramiCHOU if there's literally no choux inside? If there was a lot more choux layered throughout it would've been perfect because it was PACKED with hazelnut chocolate spread to the point it was DRIPPING from my spoon. It was 6 bucks and there was a vanilla or hazelnut available. I would love to see more flavors of this item. It sort of reminded me of the Nutella magnolia pudding minus the bananas and with a touch of coffee. Staff was very helpful and very welcoming. For that alone I'd come back.

Yelp
Delicious cream puffs! I love cream puffs, and this place did not disappoint at all for my first visit here. The staff were very friendly and provided prompt service. The cream puffs are smaller than others I've seen, but I thought the size made portioning perfect for small bites as a snack or as a post-meal dessert. They have a variety of flavors, and I loved them all. Tiramisu was a unique flavor I hadn't tried in cream puff form before, and that was great! They also have other pastries in store that I'll be sure to try next time. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Tried the chocolate chip cookie croissant today and immediately came to write a review in hopes that they'll never take it off the menu. Forever changed.

Yelp
Was looking for a good galette des rois after trying a few pastry shops in NYC and finally gave that one a shot. The galette was soggy. The dough (pate feuilletée) had no flakiness, no crunch. The frangipane was average. Even a store bought galette in France would be better. Not worth the price.

Yelp
Visited Barachou specifically for its cream puffs, which did not disappoint. The puffs were small, which can be judged negatively, but the size made them easy to finish and packed flavors. The puffs were also very elegant and served as the highlight of the shop's pastry counter. I didn't have the opportunity to indulge in every flavor, however, I went with mango, pomegranate, and dulce de lèche. They were all delicious, but I think the pomegranate is worth it as a monthly/seasonal flavor. Price-wise, the options include: 1 puff for $3.25, 3 puffs for $9, 6 puffs for $17, or 12 puffs for $33. Go try for yourself! Additional information: the shop features a variety of French pastries (not only cream puffs), coffee, and complimentary water and Wi-Fi.

Yelp
This is the perfect place to enjoy free wifi and have an afternoon tea. Iced Tea/Coffee with a cream puff is $5, and with a pastry is $8. Everything we had was excellent, and the customer service was top notch. I must come back and try everything else! You can snag yesterdays pastries for $3 too.

Yelp
Cute shop on 8th Ave in West Village with 2-3 tables for dining in. They sell a variety of pastries, cakes, and tarts, but the stars of the show are the amazing cream puffs! The cream puffs are stuffed generously with cream and aren't too sweet. My faves are the Dulce de Leche and Passion Fruit, but you really can't go wrong with any flavor.

Yelp
Absolutely loved everything I tried here!! I got the Paris-Brest, strawberry tart, and pear almond tart. All of them were so yummy, but the Paris-Brest was definitely my favorite. The hazelnut praline filling was sooo good, there was a ton of filling and it was fluffy and light and not too sweet. The pastry part was similar to a croissant. The strawberry tart had a really yummy crust and had vanilla cream and was my friends favorite of the three. The pear almond tart had such a unique flavor since I don't usually get pear tarts but this one was also delicious. It came with a big pear slice on top with an almond cream. I definitely recommend trying the pear almond tart if you want to try a new tart flavor! The shop itself was really cute with cream puffs, macarons, and other pastries and also has seating inside. Will be coming back again!

Yelp
Excellent pastries, reasonable prices and very friendly staff. Small shop w/a few tables inside and 2 outside. Everything I've tried here has been excellent.

Yelp
Really delicious pastries. I'm not really a sweets person. But this was hands down the best without it being too sweet.

Yelp
Cute cafe where serves lovely and tasty French puff. We ordered two cups of lattes and one pistachio puff. It's exquisite and fresh. I love that it's isn't too sweet. So creamy! Highly recommend i

Yelp
Visited this place knowing nothing about it beforehand. I just had a sweet tooth craving and happened to be in the area - this place did not disappoint! I walked in and didn't really know what to get so I just listened to my stomach and it said to get some cream puffs and a tirami-chou (there are 3 flavors: choc, vanilla, and hazelnut) of which I got the hazelnut flavor. The cream puffs didn't look that big but they were certainly packed with flavor! We got a tiramisu, hazelnut, and mango flavor and all three were very distinct and light. The sweetness wasn't overwhelming but enough to satisfy the craving. I think the word that comes to mind for the flavors, mouth feel, and experience is "decadent." Also the mango cream puff toed the line between cream and custard on the inside which honestly, I'm a fan of! When I came in, I just expected another average French bakery experience but am so glad it went beyond my expectations. If I'm in the area again, I will definitely make it a point to stop by and try more cream puffs!
google avatar

Kenneth T.

Yelp
I pass by this bakery all the time whenever I'm visiting my friend. I decided to go in for a latte but saw the cream puffs and had to give them a try. The latte was very good and the cream puffs were also good. The cream puffs are unique and delicate but I do wish they were a little bit bigger and the refrigerator was a little higher in temperature as the cream was a bit dense
google avatar

Kisha F.

Yelp
Been to this place a few times now, had the pleasure of meeting the owner and she was very friendly! Cream puffs are great, and most importantly they are FRESH!! Love this little place.
google avatar

Norman H.

Yelp
I feel so lucky to have Barachou within walking distance. Croissants are as good as my partner and I had them in France, and the cinnamon buns are something else. Off the chart. We could each eat 2 without remorse, but they're so rich and so filling, we usually just split one. Everyone on staff is a gem. They get to know their "regulars," and ask "same as last time?" or "Don't tell me, let me guess" with a smile. They do this with a customer base that can be "picky" and "finicky" to put it mildly. I love this place.

Farzeen S.

Yelp
These are absolutely gorgeous, but I wish the taste lived up to my expectations! For such a hefty price tag, these were a tad too dry! While the size and filling was great, you can easily find better spots in the city!
google avatar

Polly A.

Yelp
Omg, just the perfect bite heaven . Any flavor is good. So happy that this sweet place is in my neighborhood.

Kenza E.

Yelp
I went to barachou! I loved the West Village store, I tried the cream puffs, it was absolutely delicious!!!!! I recommend to go to Barachou !!!
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
The cream puffs are really good. I got 6 - 2 vanilla, 2 original and 2 pomegranate(?). The lady working/owner was also super friendly and nice. Definitely will be back
google avatar

Hazel S.

Yelp
So delicious!!! I love creamy dessert and this place absolutely satisfied my sweet tooth! I recommend you definitely getting these choux. The cream in each choux is so airy, light, and scrumptious. If you are a dessert person, you need to try!
google avatar

Frank G.

Yelp
We took home 3 pastries, the French Brest, tiramisu and one of their flavored cream puffs. All delicious and there are other things we want to try.
google avatar

Lucia G.

Yelp
I always stop by to try a different creme puff flavor. They are all so good! The west village location is much bigger than the one on the UWS, and it has cute window seating. The hot chocolate wasn't too sweet, either.
google avatar

Yukari L.

Yelp
Amazing cream puffs! Looks like an offshoot of an UWS store. They have lots of different flavors and a few other treats like croissants and fruit tarts. The choux was perfectly airy with light cream filling. Different from the Japanese cream puffs, there's a layer of a sweet biscuit like a pate sucre on top of the choux. Perfect for gifts and just treating yourself! There are a couple small tables inside and on the sidewalk.
google avatar

Michele B.

Yelp
Delicious pastries and cappuccino near Whitney Museum. Friendly service and they fo not rush you.
google avatar

Gaby S.

Yelp
The people working here are so nice! The flourless chocolate cake is to die for-- definitely a great addition to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Jordan P.

Yelp
What an incredible surprise. I want to knock them for only have 4 star coffee but if you take a moment and try the croissant, the tiramisu concept, the extensive array of baked delectably refined pastries, you will struggle to not give them 5 stars to. Wow. Thank you for what I called breakfast.
google avatar

Jessica T.

Yelp
Not bad! We brought a box of 6 to a small dinner - flavors are fun and they are aesthetically very cute. If I were to be honest though, I've had better cream puffs elsewhere. We actually ended up loving the cinnamon roll more (throw it in the microwave for a little bit).
google avatar

Louiza P.

Yelp
I was looking forward to being a regular customer here, but bad service and being ripped off stopped that. I asked the "manager," i.e. only person working outside the kitchen what the pear tart had in it, and she said pear cream with almond cream in it. To my dismay, I found it was not creamy at all. As the photograph shows, it was composed of a piece of pear, not much almond cream, and the butter casing. It was old. They were making fresh cookies and more, but I noticed what they had on display was probably left over from last week. I paid the price of a cooked chicken and rice in many markets for a piece of pear, dried-out almond cream and butter with flour. Most products from this bakery are creamy. This one was not, and it's not a croissant! The "manager" refused to give me a cookie, like for $2.50, for my waste of money. This is not good customer relations. Is it a Generation Z thing DId you take math? Do you want to save $2.50 to lose more when you do not see a customer again? Bad move
google avatar

Eric F.

Yelp
This bakery is located around the corner from my mother, and became my hang out when I was recently in town taking care of mom post-surgery. In a neighborhood that has become both affluent and expensive, I was particularly impressed by the reasonable prices for the desserts and coffee, both of which were excellent. Surprisingly, there were always tables available, both indoors and outdoors.
google avatar

Allen T.

Yelp
I came here and got a box of 6 cream puffs. The puffs are all very cute (a little on the smaller side), but very delicious!

Meghan P.

Yelp
These were beyond amazing!! I got 6 of their cream puffs and couldn't resist scarfing 3 down in one go! I was a little hungry, but they really were that good. Very airy pastries with a light, fluffy cream. Mango was my favorite (tasted a bit like mango lassi), but all of the flavors I tried (mango, cherry, raspberry, vanilla) were incredible - definitely worth trying! These tasted best fresh, the day I got them. Still good the day after, just a bit soft/soggy (as expected)
google avatar

Peter D.

Yelp
Sitting here with a laptop for numerous hours - the entire time most of the tables were empty. The owner just walked up to me and kicked me out for staying here "too long" and not buying enough. And talking on the phone "too loud" (I was talking at conversation tone, just like the pair sitting next to me). While he told me this he said he was "doing me a favor" and it's just "knowing how to be in the world". Nice, pal. Some advice for a cream puff store owner that knows everything about being in the world. 1. If you are bothered by the volume of a conversation in your store, maybe treat your customers with respect and ask them to lower their voice vs. kick them out. 2. If you are watching the clock and counting how many cream puffs people are buying and somehow it works out in your brain that you need to kick them out while the store is almost 100% empty, maybe the problem isn't the customer. Given then your breath smelled like alcohol, I am going to pass this up to altered judgement. Otherwise, please consider my advice - provided for free to somebody that has something to learn about being in the world.

Emily E.

Yelp
Barachou is such a wonderful addition to West Village! A sunny and cheerful shop included delicious treats and coffee. I highly recommend their croissants and chocolate chip cookies!

David L.

Yelp
Cream puffs are delicious. The person getting the cream puffs and ringing up the order was super nice. Would visit again

Gian D.

Yelp
I actually like everything* here (except the cookie, nauseatingly sweet). The cream puffs are awesome though. But the new employee at the front was so "mean girls" nasty about closing the door today (48 degrees, raining and cold) that it made me want to leave this review. Like I understand it's a bakery and maybe you need to keep the kitchen conditions a certain way, but maybe get better vents or something or windows in the back so your repeat customers can sit for an hour on a laptop to send some emails and not be shivering. Might as well just take away wi-fi. The sole woman inside was sipping coffee in her down puffer jacket, she hadn't even taken it off. I of course was looked at like I had two heads.
