Chicago’s best savory pie restaurants | Eater Chicago

"Instead of hamburgers, Australians eat their meat, vegetable, and bread together in pie form. But they eat them the same way, with their hands and smeared with ketchup. Barangaroos serves the classic mince — beef and sauteed onion — but there’s a long list of other flavors, including chicken tikka masala, Buffalo chicken mac and cheese, and a vegan shepherd’s pie. The West Loop location inside Chicago’s French Market carries a more limited selection." - Naomi Waxman

I ordered original and steak and cheese. Taste was not fantastic but was decent. Adding hot sauce is a must. If you plan to eat inside, be aware that there is no large space to sit.

You NEED to get a sausage roll, they're so good and so filling for only $5. I could eat 2 for lunch and be full until 7.

Cute little shop that you order outside from. Had a great conversation about photography when I ordered. I did order the Tikka Masala as I was VERY curious to try my favorite Indian dish (cliche I know) merged with a pot-pie experience. We were both distracted so I did somehow end up with Steak and Cheese when I went later to try it. So, that is the ONLY reason for the 4 Star - ultimately giving me not what I ordered. But - What I did get was STILL very deliciously. The outside is super flaky and buttery. The inside super saucy, meaty, and cheesy. Just fantastic! I wish I had time to go back and try that Tikka Masala version.

Having had Barangaroos before and enjoying the similar flavors to that of pies in South Africa, I convinced a few coworkers to try it as well. I ended up placing an order on their website for delivery to my office downtown. I got the notification that the food had been delivered and immediately went downstairs to the front desk to pick it up, except there was no food, leaving me and my disappointed coworkers without lunch. I asked at the front desk if there were any food drop-offs that had just happened, but there were none. I then tried calling the number on the order summary that specifically says to use if there were issues with delivery, but there was no answer. I probably tried calling 20 times and not once was it answered. I then emailed Barangaroos on their email address listed as well as messaged them on Facebook but heard nothing back that day. Two days later, I finally received some communication from them, but all that Mike (the person that signed the email) could say was that it appears that my order was delivered and there was nothing he could do. I had emailed back asking for the proof of delivery that their own delivery notification claimed existed, but I have yet to receive a response or any such proof. Barangaroos has gone from a spot I would advocate for, to a place I will advise against. Their customer service is terrible, and I would recommend against using their website for deliveries

I needed a quick lunch after checking into my hotel and walked by Barangaroos on my way to a cafe. I picked up the beef, onion, and cheese pie, which was a hefty boy. It was very savory, very filling, and really kept me going for the rest of the day. If you’re in the area, whether for work or for pleasure, check them out!

In my favorite city in the U.S. for meetings and I stumbled upon Barangoos when it was closed and I knew I had to try it before I left. I add it there before I left and Barangaroos does not disappoint. It’s no non-sense, carry out only from a window. I knew I wanted a traditional mince and I wanted to try the chicken tikka. The tikka was sold out (to be fair, they offered to make me one but 35 minutes in the Chicago rain wasn’t going to work), so it was two minces. Delicious. Warm and subtly spiced, with a flaky crust all around, these are very good hand pies. Definitely a place you want to stop at when in Chicago.

I ordered 3 traditional Australian meat pies. The filling tasted nothing like the traditional meat pies I have eaten in Australia. The pastry was on point.

I finally tried this spot after passing by several times and being curious about it, and was happy I did. The pies (I tried the lamb curry pie) are substantial with a nice crispy, flaky crust, and great filling-to-pastry ratio. The filling was meaty, well spiced, and also contained a good balance of veggies. Fruit smoothies are also offered. I tried their Yellow Smoothie with pineapple and mango which was made to order with frozen fruit and didn't seem to be loaded up with any added sweetener. It tasted fresh like a smoothie I might make at home. Meat pies are heavier fare, and with the generous filling, I was well-sated for the entire afternoon by my one pie along with a fruit smoothy. Overall, a excellent pick-up spot for lunch, or one can grab frozen pies to take and bake later. Great value is offered here in a location where it is becoming more difficult by the day to keep lunch under $20. A lunch deal is available which I believe was $11 for a pie with a canned drink and bag of chips. Dine-in space is very limited, so plan on taking your meal to a nearby park, plaza, or back to the office. Because the pies are self-contained, the ecologically-minded will also appreciate the minimal waste, which amounts to a small paper bag.

Yelp
I visited Australia a couple years ago and I love a savory meat pie. I was wary but interested to see an Aussie pie place in The Loop. They had a lunch combo, so I added mac and cheese and a drink to my pie. With tax and tip, it was a little over $15 which was a little steep. The mac and cheese was a good portion, in a container almost as big as the pie. However, it tasted like there was too much hatch chile in there or something. Not sure if it was actually hatch chile, but it was similar to spicier green peppers and I don't love the flavor. Mac and cheese really isn't an Australian thing, though, so I was intrigued that it was an option in the first place. I didn't try the default Aussie pie option which is a classic mince. They all sounded so delicious that it was hard to choose what would fulfill my craving, but I went with the chicken tikka masala. It was great. It tasted like chicken tikka masala, was well-heated throughout yet still in a flaky, not-soggy crust. The chicken was moist and soft and the creamy tomato sauce really hit the spot. I don't think one pie would be enough for a meal, but the pie and mac and cheese were enough. Personally, next time I'd rather just get two pies.

Yelp
The pies are pretty good. We got the beef stew, chicken and mushroom, and unreal shepherds pie. All of the pies were solid on flavor, as well as texture - though they could have been warmer. The Mac and cheese is really good. There's a little spice to it, but it's good. The mashed potatoes are a bit of a disappointment. They taste and have the texture of a box mix potato. Worth a stop if you're in the area, but I won't make the trip here out of the blue.

Yelp
I've always wanted to try Australian pies since I saw them being made on a show, so I was eager to try this place when I saw it. The store is pretty small, with only two bar stool seats inside and an option to order from the outside window. Being able to order from the outside makes this a great option for a grab and go meal. What I ordered was the beef stew and Tikka masala. Unfortunately, what I got was the beef mince pie instead of the beef stew. This was not a total loss for me since I quite enjoyed the chicken tikka flavor, with the exception of it being light with the flavor. The mince I did not enjoy, though, and I could not get behind meat mince. I know I would have preferred the beef stew since I would have liked the chunks of beef with potato. I will give plenty of credit to the flake pie crust surrounding the pie, however. That made the pies more enjoyable to try. I would have given an extra star if I had gotten the correct pie, most likely, but regardless, I will probably return if I am in the area to try the other flavors. I recommend giving this place a try, but ensure you get the correct pie to avoid being a bit disappointed.

Yelp
Customer service was very friendly . They were out fo the sausage roll and the chicken mushroom pie. Ended up getting what I thought was a healthier option. The steak and mushroom pie but it was a tad too salty

Yelp
We stopped in to grab a quick dinner here before a show at the Vic Theater across the street. There are a few tables and chairs to sit down and eat. We got the sausage roll, chicken tikki masala pie, shepherds pie, and the steak and cheese pie. We were fairly hungry so we each got two but I think getting one pie each and splitting a third would've been great! It is a no frills place with quick service. It also would be really portable on the go since the seams of the pie were solidly pressed together. Definitely put ketchup on your pies!

Yelp
So glad this was near our hotel! Delicious personal pies served by a friendly staff, patient with our first timer questions. Try the lunch deal, soda and chips for $5 extra. Ordered the Tandoori Chicken, the Steak & Potato and Chicken & Mushrooms. All were heart comfort food. The Chicken & Mushroom was good but under seasoned. But the light, flaky pastry is perfection between your hands. We also found one pie each enough for a lunch. I also had the tomato basil soup, also great. They have other sides like Mac n Cheese and Mashed Potatoes. For the carb conscious lol sausage rolls are an option. There are a few seats inside and two tables outside on a quiet street. Keep in mind they are closed on Saturday and Sunday. Would definitely come again! Try an Aussie pie, for an amazing treat you didn't know you're missing in Chicago!

Yelp
Very tasty pies! $9+ per little pie is a bit steep. Perhaps buy 2 get $3 off? The lady at the store is always so personable.

Yelp
I've never had Aussie pies and had to stop by! Barangaroos is a small restaurant that has the option to purchase their pies both indoor and outdoor. It's a simple place with a simple menu. They do have a few different options for the pies: classic mince, beef stew, steak&mushroom, tikka masala, steak&cheese, and mango bbq pork. I ordered the beef stew and tikka masala. I was quite disappointed when I realized she gave me the wrong order- I was given the classic mince instead of the beef stew. The minced beef was salty, runny, and was not pleasant. However, the tikka masala was much better in comparison. There were whole pieces of chicken and the tikka was flavorful in comparison to the minced beef one. Overall, I did not enjoy Barangaroo's Aussie pies, but glad I tried!

Yelp
I have always wanted to try these pies for years now but alas, I'm vegetarian... Well, wasn't I suprised when I visited their website and found that they offer a "Unreal Shepards Pie" which is a vegetarian pie made with plant-based meat alternative. I would suggest they add this vegetarian option to their in-store & sidewalk menu/signage, as there is no other way to know about this offering unless you visit their website. At any rate I ordered it and it had to be made to order (which makes sense because I'm sure they are not sold too often), this took only about 15 minutes. My pie was pretty good! If you want something a bit different or just have a craving for a warm meat pie on a cold day I would highly recommend! I look forward to bringing some of my friends by here in the future for a unique lunch option.

Yelp
surprising to have a chicken tikka masala meatpie with sweeter tasting contents and crust. warm and flaky ready to go takeaway window, convenient

Yelp
I've walked by the Barangaroos store front for months and finally decided to try one. I let the young lady know it was my first time and she was really helpful. I chose the peppered steak and mushrooms. Even though it was a little too "peppery" for me it was still very delicious. It reminds me of a potpie but more upscale. The size of the pie is the perfect portion. The dough is delicious. I could eat that on its own. I do recommend. Tasty food with pleasant and helpful staff.

Yelp
Sausage Roll, Steak & Guinness, Shepherd's Pie made up the order. Thoughts: It was decent, right... like I think I'd recommend stopping by earlier in the day. I went at 6:00, so the freshest meat pies had been incubating all day. Would be a good meal to eat before going out. Light enough with the portion yet still hearty and filling.

Yelp
This review is for frozen pies to go. I ordered 5 different pies and baked one last night. Instructions are super easy and in 40 minutes I had a perfectly baked pie. Perfect for dinner.

Yelp
Loved the Aussie pie. Came here to take me back to my New Zealand. It's a very casual place, perfect for a quick takeout lunch. Very nice people. Definitely try the Steak & Guinness pie.

Yelp
I forget how I stumbled upon this place, but I'm so glad I did. If you want savory pies on the go with well-seasoned stuffing and flaky, buttery dough, this is the spot for you. I couldn't really gauge the size of the pies and thought they would be about the size of regular empnadas for whatever reason. Boy, was I wrong. 1 pie is definitely enough for 1 person. 2 if you're really hungry. My phatazz not knowing the sizing and wanted some of everything? I got 3 and a sausage roll, bruh. Regrets, haha. But think of it as being the size of a medium/large adult hand. Now onto eating the pies. Omg. It's 40ish degrees, and I had to trek to and from my office. When I got to my office, the pies were still perfectly warm. Hot enough to eat without wondering whether I was going to get molten lava lol. They're perfectly golden brown, with a flaky buttery crust with each bite. The stuffings were well-seasoned and had a nice texture to it without being overly runny. You can definitely enjoy these by hand, but just make sure you have some napkins nearby bc they don't skimp on the stuffing. Because I ordered these online, I didn't get a chance to explore how to "properly" eat these with ketchup (is Australian ketchup different?). And lastly, the sausage roll. It was nice but probably my least favorite, just bc of how heavy it is feeling wise (it was a deep-fried pastry dough wrapped sausage). Would I eat it again? Maybe but my doc would hate me if I kept getting it lol. Overall, I definitely recommend checking it out if you want a quick bite to eat without having to wait too long for your food. Crossing off eating Australian pies from my bucket list, but I'll definitely be back to try the other flavors and menu items.

Yelp
Stopped by on a Friday for work lunch. My co-workers recommended this place and I smelled the curry lamb, and definitely got me interested. The operation is very streamlined and minimalist, it looks like they freshly bake the pies and when they sell out, that's it. You walk up to a window and they quickly bag your order, and you are ready to bite into an Aussie Pie! I ordered a curried lamb and a steak & Guinness and my total was about $20. I also wanted to try a sausage roll but it looks like they sell out in the morning, and apparently cost about $6. Value is a strong suit for their menu because these pies are filling. They give me pastie vibes, but are shaped in actual pie format. Similar to English royal pies but less pretentious and larger. Most people will be full after eating one, I'm good with 1.5. They also have a combo deal, $5 adds a hearty side and a drink. Both pies were flavorful, hot, and had great texture. Flaky outer crust, substantial enough to hold the girth of ingredients, but not overwhelming you with dough. Each pie had a distinctive flavor, and could stand on their own. I'm definitely coming back to this place, its in my work lunch rotation now. Hopefully they do well downtown.

Yelp
Ahh! This used to be Bleu Nails and Spa and it was next to Hannah's Bretzel, remember that? This is the third location here and it's smaller than the original one which is in Lakeview. Had the mashed potatoes. The items are affordable. staff and service is great.

Yelp
Big fan of this place. Bumped into it when I walked by so to speak. Made a mental note, so we went back on our last day before going to the airport. GF and I shared the minced and I think the other was the steak and Guinness...both were excellent. Not cheap at about $9 each, but a nice change from the usual fare. The restaurant has no tables but we did eat in the tiny space. Oh and the people here were very friendly. Highly recommend checking them out. They make fresh savory pies all day and they serve them up lightning quick! I guess there are two other locations but I can only speak to the one that on Washington very close to Wells (Northeastern corner). Basically if you have had a Cornish Pasty, this is very much like that...or a bit like a bigger empanada but in pie form.

Yelp
The pies were fantastic. They're fresh and piping hot. Legitimate Aussie pies and a good variety of options. Not a lot of seating inside, but the pies are handheld and are supposed to be eaten that way (just like the Aussies). I would highly recommend them. 5 stars. Impeccable service too.

Yelp
I am shook. This place really surprised me. Those cheddar chicken rolls - Amazing! If I ever go get lunch again I would need two of them to be enough for a meal. The Chicken Tikka Masala pie taste just as described. If you haven't had regular curry before make sure you know do so you know what you're getting into. Then their chocolate fold pie is delicious. As a chocolate lover, I would have liked just a bit more chocolate to work with the crust. Don't get me wrong the flaky crust is amazing but that chocolate you add really make it delicious and adding just a little more would really make them more mouthwatering. You guys keep it up, I'll come by for lunch quite often

Elizabeth G.

Yelp
Only taking one star away because they're not serving them with an Aussie option with mashed potatoes, mushy peas, and gravy on top!

Yelp
Amazing food. The minced pie was so good. MIL loved her pepper steak/mushroom. The mac and cheese comes with a nice skim of melted cheese on top and is nicely spicy (white pepper?). Had the blood orange Aussie soda. Love a glass bottled drink! Dropped a star for service. Three people in a tiny space and it truly seemed like it was everyone's first day. Each asked the others "Did you put forks in the bag?" Two different people added napkins. One person labeled two of our pie bags. Another labeled the third bag. Filling the order was low-key chaotic. Luckily there was no line. They need assigned roles and a process. Tip: walk two blocks east to eat outdoors at a table in Daley Plaza.

Yelp
Pretty solid overall. Got the sausage roll and peppered steak pie. Great flavor on both. Sausage roll just wasn't that warm. Super close to my work so would come back again.

Yelp
Short trip to the Windy City and just walking around we stumbled by this little place. Had two pies, braised beef and chicken masala, they're just like down under. Fantastic!!!
