Barbarea: Tallinn’s New Wave Bakery-Cum-Bistro

"Set in a former rubber factory on Kopli’s industrial peninsula, this evening incarnation reopens at 5pm after the daytime Karjase sai bakery winds down, offering both indoor seats and a wooden terrace overlooking a shady industrial courtyard. Since the summer of 2021, its unique day-to-night rhythm has impressed guests, with a family style of dining built around colorful sharing platters that lean on predominantly local ingredients from small-scale farms and a menu that rotates with the Estonian seasons—think crispy perch pike tacos or organic grass-fed entrecôte—while creativity is the real drive here. The kitchen carries through the venue’s daytime synergy by serving sourdough focaccia with optional olive oil and/or anchovies among the entree options, and drinks range from kombucha varieties and alcohol-free cider to niche choices like a Japanese rice lager. Nice place, good service. Food tasted great but I found it overpriced for the quantity, especially the portion of that grilled octopus with mashed. But overall great cozy atmosphere. Would def recommend this place as I’m pretty bored of ordinary menus u see everywhere (like duck breast or grilled fish)

Do yourself a favor and COME EAT HERE. best dinner ever, the entrees, the mains, the desserts. ALL TO DIE FOR. and pls get their hummus, absolutely unmissable. non negotiable. amazing service as well and i love that they are extremely sustainable. this place deserves all the hype!!!

One of the best restaurants I have visited lately. Only flaw we could find was slightly overcooked octopus that tasted still great. All the other stuff from the tasting menu was varied and the sharing worked nicely. Service was absolutely delightful and wines were paired nicely. One of us did not like dessert and got savoury portion instead, this was nice touch. Terrace was fantastic, the area has a great atmossphere, it was all shots firing and nothing was left in the barrel.

We visited this restaurant three times. Our first visit, last year, was wonderful. The portions were a normal size, the flavors were unique, and for me the tartare and the hummus were the highlights. When we returned in January this year, I noticed the portions had become smaller while the prices remained the same or possibly even increased. My friend ordered the tartare, which came in a very small portion and was quite average, nothing special. I had a delicious hummus with lamb that was so good it made me want to return just for that dish. Unfortunately, on our third visit, only 2–3 weeks later, we were told that the hummus with lamb was no longer available and that the menu had been redesigned. I understand that changing the menu may be part of the restaurant’s concept, but such a quick change is frustrating for customers who return because of a specific dish or memorable experience. We ordered other dishes instead, but this time the experience was disappointing. The portions were extremely small for the price, and the flavors were just average. We ordered a beef dish with sauce, and the meat was tough and chewy, almost like gum. It felt like low-quality supermarket meat, yet it cost 24 euros for just a few thin slices. You had to chew it repeatedly, and the flavor was below average. We also ordered the tartare again, and it was very ordinary about a 6/10. Although the staff were attentive, unlike our previous visits, there was no presentation or explanation of the dishes. Overall, this last experience completely changed my perception of the restaurant, and unfortunately, I really do not plan to return.

Starters and desserts were amazing! The honey cake is something we still dream about. Their house wine (skin contact) was the star of the show, so good! Unfortunately main courses let us down. Duck breast dish didn’t really work for us, the whole dish tasted very bitter and burnt-like due to the overwhelming amount of sumac. Couldn't really taste anything else in the dish. The meat itself was nicely cooked. Vegetarian main option (carrots) felt more like a side dish rather than a complete main dish. Despite the main dishes, the whole experience was very nice! We loved the atmosphere, service and other dishes. After our dinner we got some of the leftover sourdough focaccia with us to take home. That was such a nice gesture. We'll definitely be back to taste something different next time!

Firstly, I will say this was a good experience. The area is incredible and it enhances how you feel about the restaurant. Onto the not great parts - the food was GOOD! But, really nothing special for a Michelin Guide restaurant - the menu is unimaginative. Having said that, the price is decent and worth it. Where this place falls flat is service. I had to ask two separate servers (one twice) for cutlery which meant my food was cold by the time my fork and knife came. The servers seem to only care when you try get their attention vigorously or once your plate is empty. The potential of this restaurant is immense, but it's let down sorely for an unimaginative menu (which tastes pretty decent) and poor service.

I visited Barbarea during their French Week and tried the special tasting menu. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience—the atmosphere was nice, and the concept was well thought out. That said, there were a few minor issues. The tartar was great, but only one crackling per person to eat it with felt a bit limited. The deer fillet could have been more tender, and the sauce was a bit too salty for my taste
