Barbary Coast - Review - Mystic - Mystic - The Infatuation

"New England seafood restaurants are spread across this town like butter on a lobster roll. This Mediterranean spot is exactly how you should mix it up. Go for happy hour baby negronis, silken chicken liver pate, and kefta meatballs topped with a sunny egg, and stay for the grilled whole fish rich with aromatic chermoula or the seven-spice Lebanese half chicken. The wine list leans Spanish, and is filled with great choices—we once tried a pithy textural wine that connected the flavors on the menu like a ferry across the Strait of Gibraltar. photo credit: Lisa Nichols photo credit: Lisa Nichols photo credit: Lisa Nichols Pause Unmute RESERVE A TABLE" - Tanya Edwards

Google
Excellent food but I wish they would give their wine and beer game a little more love and attention. Would easily be 5 stars if they had some more exciting beverage choices.

One of the best restaurants in CT, maybe all of New England. Drinks are unreal. Lamb was perfectly cooked. Smoked beets, next level. Branzino - a ton of flavor. Last but not least, the Crème Brûlée was by far the best I’ve ever had. 10/10 service as well.

This place is exceptional. You simply cannot get more authentic flavors, incredible service, quality ingredients, beautiful presentation….. We live in Florida, and if we could pick this place up and bring it home with us, we would in a second. Perfection. Happy hour was awesome, and our server Taya was a gem. Don’t miss out on this place!!!

WOW! I am over the moon to find a new dining option in Mystic other than traditional fanfare—a breath of fresh air! I stumbled onto the location as I was parking in the commuter lot in Mystic. Very glad I did! They are right across the street from Sift and the parking lot. We had the wrinkled potatoes with a beautiful creamy dipping sauce, smoked carrots with yogurt herb spread, and pomegranate (this one is a creative play on flavor!). We tried the Grilled Spanish Octopus and the main course was the Half Chicken that was delicately crispy on the outside with a beautiful taste of cumin and other beautifully blended spices on the inside, so juicy too! I had to thank the chefs Tabby and Julian for the awesome meal! The LaBelle cocktail was refreshing! And the Lebanese Cake and the Yogurt sorbet, you cannot just get one dessert! We will be coming back soon!

We heard that a new Mediterranean place had opened up in Mystic, CT. Surely, we had to give it try. Boy, oh boy! What an amazing place. Too bad I didn't have any more room to eat another bite. All the appetizers we tried were delicious. The wine selection while (very) small was a perfect pairing with the food coming from the kitchen. The place is tiny (about 7 tables in the dining room, 5 bar seats, & 4 rail seats over looking the street. I'm glad we got to try this place while it had just opened up. I'm sure, as spring & summer come around, and once word gets out, this place will have a long wait or will be impossible to get into.

My friend from Mystic joined me for dinner after another local had recommended Barbary Coast to me. Amazing! Our server Tayla helped us through the menu and was friendly and attentive. We ordered the ceviche, grilled octopus and Saganaki. Soo good! I am looking forward to my next visit to Mystic and I will defiantly be back. Craig D.

Google
We had a truly fabulous meal at Barbary Coast recently! Lauren was taking care of us and was very kind and helpful with the menu. We had the spreads and bread, beets, salad, whole fish and steak. All were delicious, flavorful and fresh. The menu and wine list is a bit limited but it’s a small restaurant so it makes sense. They still had something for everyone. The bottle of wine we had was delicious as well. This is a great addition to the Mystic food scene which was lacking in great Mediterranean places.

Google
So happy we tried something new to us in Mystic! Arrived in time for Happy Hour and were glad to try their Baby Groni. Tayla was our server but she became a sweet friend in minutes with her pleasant guidance and knowledge of the menu. Thursday wine discount outstanding as well. Casual non rushed ambiance. Stellar olives, cerviche & oysters. But the whole deboned bronzino was no less impressive. Too full for dessert but there will be many return visits to sample those too. Did I already say Tayla is a gem herself?

Yelp
We had no reservations but really wanted to try it. They put us down on the waiting list. Then texted when table was ready at almost 9 pm. The staff was all very pleasant. The place is small but so beautiful. I love the decor and plenty of plants inside. We loved the food and will return with some friends to try more food. But loved everything we tried.

Yelp
A small cozy and delicious alternative to standard Mystic fare. We didn't know it existed until hunting for dinner reservations and came across the unique name. What a great find! The menu is simple, the food of Moroccan, or of the Barbary Coast origin, and flavorful and satisfying. The service was friendly and prompt. The owner is welcoming and discrete, and quietly proud of what he has accomplished, and rightly so. Our party feasted on smoked beets, a delicious and tender meatball, and pita breads with various spreads, before enjoying our mains of chicken, steak, and branzino. Each one was exquisitely seasoned, charred, and beautifully presented. The entire experience was transcendent, warm, and delightful- like dining at your friends house. I strongly recommend it, and will go back many times, assuming I can get reservations, as once the word is out-good luck!

Yelp
I really enjoyed the service and the ambience of this place. The waitress was super helpful and was very patient with me explaining the menu. I kind of just walked in on a whim, so I don't know if I was fully into the Mediterranean food style at the moment but something didn't knock it completely out of the park. However, the food was not bad and the happy hour specials are decently priced. I think the most interesting thing I liked was the WARM olives. I didn't know what I was expecting. I usually eat cold olives from the refrigerator. But they were quite delicious. I felt like the kafta meatballs and cheese dish was very salty ( remember I also had olives). The overall experience was that I kind of felt that everything was too salty but I honestly think this might've been a reflection of what I ordered and not the entire menu. I think I would probably go back for the happy hour and try some other stuff in the near future. The place is worth a visit for experience and price.

Yelp
This is a small, casual restaurant and bar serving North African influenced cuisine. We ordered oysters and four small plates ( they also have entrees). It's a limited menu, yet we had no problem finding a number of dishes we wanted to try. Oysters were tender and came with two unique sauces. Each small plate was delicious and well spiced. Portions were generous. Prices, in today's world, were reasonable. The vibe and service were excellent. My cocktail also was unique and yummy. They offer wines by the glass, beers and one cider, which was an excellent choice from France. It was such a pleasure to find this friendly, unassuming spot whose chef really knows what they're doing.

Yelp
Fantastic- but no serious- it was! Happy hour runs until 6 on a Friday night- so we started with cocktails and apps. Wrinkled potatoes- dusted with salt and a dipping sauce- savory and spicy- yes! Meatballs- great-Salad with super fresh greens and a smear of feta- for the win- but nothing compared to the roasted chicken- 5 spices of perfection. Roasted cauliflower could have used 10 more in minutes in over but still good (coated in honey?) THE BEST CHICKEN ever- our service was 5 star to set the stage. Prices are Mystic, yet comfortable. Music A+

Yelp
Great service. Fish was extremely overcooked or not fresh. Lamb chops excellent. Pistachio cheesecake had no taste and dry out texture. Extremely expensive, will not return

Yelp
We went to the Barbary Coast last night and what a delight!! A charming intimate place with a patio..a dining area and a cute bar. The chef is masterful in creating Mediterranean dishes that are creative and not mainstream otherwise delicious!! The service was incredible and friendly. The warm olives to start..yummy then octopus so tender..saganaki..creative and also delicious and grilled pita to scoop up the wonderful sauce with meatballs. A wonderful place and very nice wine pour too!

Yelp
I do not understand the hype. Why and how are people enjoying these dishes? The menu, ambiance, and overall restaurant concept is amazing, which is why I gave the two stars - but, this meal was disappointing at just about every point of the dining experience. I adore Mediterranean cuisine, and was incredibly excited for a fantastic meal - perhaps that's why I'm being so harsh in this review! Unfortunately, it was really bad. Poor quality fish. Inconsistent food quality in every dish. Even dessert was bad. Great menu design with appalling implementation. Our server was very polite and friendly, which I appreciated, but had that vibe of someone who was just burnt out. By the way, I know serving is a tough job, I realize that I don't know what's happening in the back of the house, and I sincerely appreciate the server's professionalism even while under strain. In summary, I paid a lot of cash for a terrible meal in a pretty setting and beautiful town. Never again.

Yelp
Great flavors and service. Chicken and moussaka were full of flavor. Everything was exceptional.

Yelp
This is such a great addition to Mystic! The food is fabulous, and the service is great. We came with another couple, and we all agreed the whole fish, half chicken, and steak with eggplant were top notch. The wine list is special and interesting, and we enjoyed all the wines we tried, as well as the sangria. If you used to frequent this place when it was a breakfast diner, you won't believe the transformation to the interior - it's beautiful, and you feel like you've stepped into another location miles away from the bustle of town.
