Tasty meals, especially the pasta, and a friendly staff. Unfortunately our waiter was not careful, and despite us informing him of our good allergies, the food came covered with seeds.

I had the pleasure of photographing Tara and Mark’s beautiful summer wedding at this fantastic venue, and I highly recommend it! The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was absolutely incredible. They had their ceremony in the charming upstairs space and hosted an intimate reception in a private dining room within the restaurant. The shop was quite elegant and cute. We ordered two pasta. The pesto pasta was terrible, way too much garlic and not enough pesto flavor, they sent it back to the kitchen and added lot more pesto but still wasn’t good enough, probably won’t go back again for the food. 31$ pesto spaghetti, with tax and service fee it’s 40 per pasta. I personally don’t like pasta al pomodoro so I cannot judge it. The staff was extremely kind and generous.

We had a lovely dinner. We were lucky that Eduardo took care of our table. He was charming and attentive which added so much to our experience. The food was outstanding. Even the vegetarians had good choices. The female pianist was quite good. Even though the room was a bit noisy, our party of four had no trouble hearing one another.

Wonderful old world Italian spot in brownstone on restaurant row. We really enjoyed our meals. Food was delicious. Service was attentive. Unfortunately, all of our orders came to the the table warm, not hot.

Very lovely place with the elegant and theatre alike atmosphere of old restaurant. My rabbit was great, but a bit too salty for my liking. The chocolate mousse was absolutely delightful and just perfect! Cappuccino had the airy and cloudy texture, that was amazing. Service was excellent. We’ve been granted a complimentary dessert wine which was such a great pairing for my chocolate mousse. Good selection of wines overall as well. I would definitely recommend this place for the special occasions.

This place serves truly amazing pastas! It was one of the two recommendations we received from our Italian friend. Initially, we were hesitant due to the negative reviews on yelp, but we were glad we decided to check it out. We ordered two prefixes with roasted peppers, ragu penne, roasted rabbit, and braised beef. While the beef was just ok, everything else was delicious. The true highlight of our meal was the gnocchi in cream sauce, which was super light and fluffy. Absolutely delightful. I could never understand why people claimed the food is bad here, but I can empathize with the confusion surrounding their prix fixe and à la carte menu. Particularly during weekend dinners, it's not possible to order from the à la carte menu until 8:30 p.m., and guests are limited to choosing from the three-course prix fixe options.

Any restaurant in NYC that's been around since 1906 must be tried. So here I am for restaurant week, trying the next restaurant on the Row of Restaurants at 46th street between 8th and 9th. To begin, this is an absolutely beautiful restaurant, both outside and in the patio dining area, complete with a fountain. You can't beat restaurant week deals, so 3 courses for $45 is a steal. Now for the experience. Yall know I'm a #sobersista do a menu without mocktails...well, it has to be noted. Plenty of wine for the winos tho. Now for the food. Bread should always be served with warm, SPREADABLE, butter, especially when the bread is delicious and warm. My first course is linguine with pesto. Chef's kiss on flavor (though I did add more salt.). One of my two knives was dirty, so there's that. Second course was a tender beef with red wine reduction/sauce with green mashed potatoes. DE-LI-CIOUS!!! Tender tender tender beef, and the potatoes were smooth and creamy. Dessert was an orange chocolate mousse, and I devoured it! The meal was very satisfying. The service was top notch. Not a moment passed that my water glass was not filled and I was checked on consistently throughout my meal. Definitely a fine dining experience!

I had dinner in there last week and was very disappointed. It's expensive and I expected more for the money I spent. The waiter never told us that salad came with the entree. I ordered soup and couldn't eat the salad. The beef was fatty. The pianist, who was quite good. couldn't be heard over the loud chatter. As to the young woman whom I'm assuming was the hostess, she appeared to be of Chinese extraction with a poker face . Strange choice for an Italian eatery. Dressed in a miniskirt. Not the appropriate choice. Unfortunately for my table, she passed several times with a expression that read "What am I doing here." Needless to say, I won't return. My money is too hard earned to waste on food that, for the reputation this restaurant claims to have, is not top notch. As to customer service, I tried to relay this information over the phone but to my chagrin, the woman who answered had such a thick accent, I couldn't understand her. I work from home and was taking a brief break. I'm not about to wait until later tonight to reply when I have to speak to a client early in the morning. All in all, not the way to run a restaurant.

The coffee, cocktail, and dessert were great. Mains and service were deplorable. We were not seated in the main room (which was disappointing), but rather in a quaint upstairs area with about 10-12 tables, so that may have affected service. The cocktail I ordered didn't come until after my disgusting appetizer of floppy peppers (rather than before the meal), then they forgot about my coffee and had to be reminded twice. I didn't get to enjoy the surprisingly delicious coffee with my dessert. The filet mignon was 1) undercooked from the requested medium and 2) pre cut? What in the world? On top of all of this, I have felt sick to my stomach since the meal (and yes, through the show we saw after), I think it was the peppers on the pre fix menu.

I have been to The Play That's Gone Wrong" and unfortunately now I have been to the "Dinner That's Gone Wrong, sadly it wasn't anything near as entertaining as the play, which was also OFF Broadway. The most unfortunate part of this defective dinner was the beautiful patio, reminiscent of quiet an Italian Piazza, but also the attention to detail on behalf of the wait staff. Its quite obvious why everyone was seating outdoors, walking into the restaurant felt a bit like walking through a dated funeral parlor. Do yourself a favor and dine outside, no need to sit with the ghosts of Christmas past. They do serve a very good SAN DANIELE PROSCIUTTO IMPORTED AND MELON. Unfortunately nothing after the First Course is consistent here, not even the drinks, cranberry juice is NOT an ingredient in an Old Fashioned. The LINGUINE AL PESTO, being WAY to heavy on the pesto, was a dinner stopper. Not even the thick spaghetti noodles could balance out the overabundance of that terribly dense pesto sauce. Inconsistent to the end!! Even the bill was WAY off, in the wrong direction, and this happens in a restaurant that posts its prices on the menu. There will be no encore. Cheers!

This place is so beautiful, I had a family dinner here and the patio is very sweet. Food excellent and service on key

Big fan of Barbetta! Very old school Italian servers in a beautiful, classic white table cloth restaurant. They make a mean cocktail here, come around with unlimited bread, the food is very good, and they are accommodating of your time based on when you need to leave if you're seeing a show. What's not to love? I believe your only option is a prefix before 8pm but it's a really good deal. Appetizer, dinner salad, entree, dessert. We all really enjoyed our meals and our time here! Would recommend dining here if you are seeing a show nearby.

Old school, classic vibes, unfortunately the restaurant is on a lower level of a historic building and the dining area feels quite dated, the flooring and walls smell a bit musty. Food was ok ordered the gnocchi which had a way overpowering sauce and the hazelnut cake tasted like a banana nut bread.

I was really excited to dine out in this restaurant's back garden but couldn't because clearly they didn't get the memo that is 2023 and ADA access is required by law. I wouldn't even be as mad about it if I hadn't specifically asked the lady who answers the phone if the garden was wheelchair accessible. I was assured that it was when I made my reservation, but when I arrived for dinner, I was met with three steps before even getting to the front door. When I called to see about getting a ramp to go in, as many restaurants on this street offer, I got a very rude response from the same lady who claimed no one told me her restaurant was wheelchair friendly, despite herself and Google maps both claiming that it offers wheelchair accessible seating. She never came out or offered any other assistance, and was not at all apologetic. So yeah I believe the comments here about bad service, they clearly don't care to do something as basic as follow the anti discrimination laws that have been around for 33 years.

Had dinner here after our matinee. The ambiance is great. Old school fine dining. Sat outdoors since it was 4:30pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Lovely outdoor space. Service was attentive. They only had the Theatre Price Fixx menu in effect. Choice of an appetizer, a main and a dessert, coffee and salad included, for $63 per person. I started with the buffalo mozzarella, had the charcoal grilled swordfish as my main, and had the orange chocolate mousse as my dessert (with a decafe cappuccino). All were fresh and delicious. (My only quibble is that I thought both the appetizer and the main could have been larger). The bill, with drinks (I had three Peroni's) tax and a generous tip came to $125 per person. Will definitely return after our next matinee.

Located in the Theatre District, Barbetta is a timeless, classy, & historic establishment serving top - notch dining. Food - 9/10, the unlimited warm rolls were to die for, the food is delectable. However, we were unaware that the dinner menu is prix-fixed & many items we wanted to try were not on that menu. Drinks - 10/10...the wine variety is extensive Service - 10/10 - white gloved with attention to detail, definition of "fine dining" Atmosphere - classy, yet a homely warm feeling, as if you're having Sunday dinner at a wealthy relative's home Parking - located next to numerous trains and buses - would not recommend trying to find parking here Vegan friendly - Yes They also play happy birthday on the piano which is such a nice touch.

Came here during restaurant week for a decent 3-course $45 meal deal I'd come back for. 3 courses, wine not included but offered at reasonable price. Each course was subpar (even without normalizing for price) but the experience was wonderful. The decadent outdoor space let me imagine myself as a New York elite dining in this city oasis, located in the yard space of a theatre district brownstone. Staff were highly attentive with great service. Our order. 1.1) linguine -- distastefully firm, though sauce was reasonable. Sizeable portion for a first course. 1.2) red sauce pasta -- underwhelming; sauce was pleasantly sweet but nothing special. Small portion. 2.) Salmon was decent. Humble presentation with subtly seasoned broiled salmon, though the herb sauce helped. 3.) we got both the pears and strawberries. Perhaps attributable to my non-Piemontese palate, the red wine sauce the pears were soaked in tasted too artificial for me to not be repulsed. Strawberries themselves were not noteworthy and the zabaglione (imo indiscernible from mildly flavored whipped cream) didn't add much.

Food was fine. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing blew my mind. Went for restaurant week, so I suppose it was a decent deal. I got the salmon, which was cooked nicely and served with crisp seasoned picked cucumbers and sauce. The pesto linguini was a little dry and too Al dente for my taste. Resulting in a heavy, dry feeling after I ate it. I was full for hours afterward from the whole meal. Pear dessert cooked in a red wine sauce was a pleasant little something different than the usual, but I wished it was a little warm, as I imagined a poached fruit type dessert cooked in a nice sauce, so I thought it would be warm. Overall, a good meal. Ambiance was old and dated, with an older dining crowd as well.

I was enchanted by Barbetta. From dining in their picturesque courtyard to meeting one of their most tenured and charming waiters, my mother and I enjoyed a phenomenal dinner pre-theater. The Burrata is a must try and didn't make it long enough to snap a photo! A must visit in New York. Old Italian and dependably delicious.

Reading the reviews I was nervous on coming here before our Broadway show but we had a great experience! We arrived at 5 PM and did the pre-fix menu before our 7 PM show - the staff was very attentive and made sure that we made our show just in time (not too early and not too late) and paced everything perfectly which was appreciated! We sat outside in their little garden which was super cute - the only thing that led me to not give 4 stars was some of the bugs that were in the garden while we were out there eating. All of the food was fresh, full of flavor, and tasted great! We had MORE than enough food for the 2 of us - the handmade pasta was really tasty and the caprese salad extremely fresh as appetizers. For our mains we had the chicken and beef which were both large portions and very tasty. We ended with the baked apple and cake dessert, and in addition got a surprise pistachio cake to celebrate one of our birthday's - the staff even did some singing which was great! The decor inside may not be the trendiest/most modern in NYC and may deter some folks, but it is classic Italian and brings back great memories if this is something that you grew up with! Overall had a great meal with great service and perfect timing that set us up perfectly before our show! I would recommend this place on Restaurant Row before a show if you are looking for somewhere to eat!

My boyfriend has been wanting to come here ever since he saw it featured in the Julian Schanbel film about Basquiat. My mother had been here almost 50 years ago and I was just along for the dining experience with my teenage daughter. This place is historic and yes it shows it's age but that's kind of charming in an old school way that so many restaurants lack nowadays. The service was incredible. Ramon, Mario and Angel were so attentive throughout and even posed for a photograph with us afterwards. My mother and I had glasses of the Gavi - a white wine from Piedmont I had never had before and we really enjoyed. Now we didn't do the Prix fixe menu so the atmosphere allowed us to enjoy the antipastini and the onion with cheese in it. I went bold and had the rabbit which is not something I would normally eat but it was rich and tasty and the portion was generous. My mother had the salmon which she enjoyed and my partner had the filet. The hazelnut cake was very rich , thats not a bad thing but I wish I would have opted for the creme brule which my boyfriend and daughter devoured. Overall a decadent meal with impeccable service.

Beautiful interior and clearly a restaurant with lots of history. Service was good as well. However 3 stars since the food was okay and did not justify the price tag. I got the gnocchi which I felt was a bit stickier than I would have liked. Overall, felt that the food was overpriced for what it was.

I went to this old school Italian spot a couple weeks ago. We went here when their pre-theatre menu was being offered and they offered said menu without giving a main one. The food here is Piemontese. The menu which is pretty pricey consists of an appetizer, a main dish, a throwaway salad, and any of their desserts. I would say that the prix fix menu has much better looking appetizers than mains with one of the people in our group getting one of their pastas from the appetizer section as a main which turned out to be a very good idea compared to most of the main dishes. Also a lot of the main dishes (most fish and some other things) have a surcharge. The service started out a little rough but as people were leaving and as we ordered, he got friendlier. I ordered a white wine which I never had before which was tasty. We got some fresh bread at the beginning which was good. For my first course, I ordered the Crespelle alla Savoiarda, a Piemontese dish consisting of an Italian crepe topped with a béchamel with tomato sauce. This was tiny but the flavors were good. The tomato sauce had a good freshness and there was some light richness from the béchamel. Another person ordered a soup of the day which they enjoyed (I believe it was some type of root vegetable; perhaps turnips) and another person got a salad with cherry tomatoes and Mozzarella di Bufala which they liked. My main dish was the charcoal-grilled wild Pacific swordfish over a ragu of lentils with a warm balsamic vinaigrette which was an extra $7 and it was definitely worth it for the surcharge. The piece of fish was cooked nicely and the lentils below were delicious. Not much balsamic but I really didn't mind as I think it would have been too salty if there was a lot of it. Other people (unfortunately) ordered the Stracotto alla Florentina or braised beef with red wine with chive mashed potatoes. While an interesting mix of colors from the bright green potatoes to the red braised beef, this was a rather bad main dish. For a braised piece of beef, it was incredibly chewy and just not appetizing. The mashed potatoes were also bit lumpy and I would definitely not recommend it. The last person got one of those pastas (a general one with tomato sauce/don't remember the pasta type which was also tasty. For my dessert, I went with the torta di nocciole or a hazelnut cake. This is one of my favorite Italian desserts and their version did not disappoint. This is usually not a super sweet dessert and their version had a nice texture. Even though mine was delicious, another person's pistachio-lemon tart was even better. I believe another person had a chocolate based dessert and I don't remember what the other person had. The food here is alright. It's a bit pricey for the quality (especially for the choice of main dishes we're one of the few ones without a surcharge was well terrible) but I liked my main dish and especially the dessert. It was fun to go and see this old spot. Side note goes to probably the single most awkward coat check I've ever done. I gave the person who got my backpack a couple dollars and I believe it was perhaps one of the owners or something else but I was in a bit of a catch-22 where I'm supposed to give a tip but it was not the person who put it away. Anyway, alright spot. Low 3.

Being the oldest Italian restaurant (I hope I didn't make that up) in the city comes with some nice perks and responsibilities as I see it... I'm not sure I've fully thought about what those are but what a wonderful night partaking on restaurant row. This is probably the most magical of the places although there are a handful of them in this area. Barbets leads you through an old ballroom style dining room with the classi cvs bar that maybe isn't used as such and between a couple of indoor trees opening up to an elegant and fun courtyard with great lighting, trees, brick, and sky encircling a lovely fountain to set the way for great ambiance during a great meal. The lamb chops were a tough choice to narrow down to with venison chops and rabbit on the menu but the preparation was the deciding factor. I made a great choice but still want to come back for the delicate sounding rabbit!

Beautiful ambiance - you are taken back in time. We also did not have issues with the service. The staff was overall friendly. The whole thing did feel a bit rushed, but we were there for Restaurant Week without knowing. When we asked if there were other menu items, they said we had to order from the fixed menu. There were also only 2 wines pointed out to us. The food was disgusting... I would not feed it to our dog. This is, by far, the worst Italian food we've had in NYC. We are local New Yorkers. We know good Italian food. There is a place across the street that is great, but we decided to try Barbetta due to the glowing review from NY Times. Later, we realized they barely mentioned the food, and for good reason. The pasta was not fresh. It was boxed pasta and stale. The sauces were also questionable. However, this was the best part of the meal. It got exponentially worse. The main course was just terrible. We received the thinnest piece of dry chicken with no flavor. The tenderloin tasted like a kid's cafeteria food item. Finally, the desert looked like a turd and while it tasted okay, it was hard to get over the presentation. Even for $45/person, it was not worth it and we didn't even bother packaging the leftovers, which is the 1st time that I have ever left food behind. It was that bad.

Barbetta is located in the heart of the theatre district with a staff who respects your need to be at the theatre on time. Great food. I love the menu detail which shows when that item was added to the menu. Yes, the minestrone soup has been on the menu for decades... and with good reason!

Barbetta' s Restaurant is a fabulous restaurant filled with old world charm. It is the oldest, (1906) orignal family owned restaurant in NY, so they must be doing something right. We usually order from the pre fix menu, but the regular menu is wonderful as well. The salmon in a cucumber sauce is always an excellent choice, as is the pot roast. The pasta bolognese is also delcious. The wait staff is skilled and most attentive. We try to dine at Barbetta's every time we go to NYC.

The food was terrible. Polenta was like eating a rubber dog toy. The staff was in a rush to feed you and get you out the door. For the price you pay, you'd hope they treat you better. Instead, it felt like McDonald's. I can't tell you how bad the good was. I've had better Italian food at the olive garden.. the atmosphere was nice the piano player made it good. The faux window drapes need to be cleaned. I would not come back here again nor would I recommend this to anyone. Unless I didn't like them.

I was initially encouraged by the ambiance of the terrace in the back. A charming sanctuary in the middle of mid-town. However, the charm soon wore-off due to the surly, waxwork waiters who are way past their sell-by-date. So complacent, no smiles, just formulaic dated service. Food was OK. Had the salmon which was over-cooked and dry. Salad was ok. Two cocktails later, plus tip and bill was over $100. Not worth it. Give it a miss. Its too tired. You can do better.

An oasis in the middle of Manhattan. We enjoyed a lovely meal with friends in the garden. Friendly staff and delicious specials. Good wines.

Wonderful dining experience. It's a beautiful restaurant. The food was delicious, the service was well paced. The staff was attentive, but did not hover. We were able to enjoy our dining at our own pace. They did check at the beginning of the service to see if we had a show to attend. Highly recommend.

My best meal of the year! I tried the three-course meal from restaurant week at this place and it was just perfect, well almost. The food was great and I was so glad that I chose the beef steak - it was actually so different from a regular steak as it was cooked so tenderly with plenty of sauce. The back yard garden is also very pretty to relax in a summer evening in the city. The only regret was, it's bit crowded in the garden. Well, I can't complain about it as almost every table ordered from the restaurant week menu. Yeah, it's the summer special offered by our city!

Love Barbetta!! We always make a point to do a pre show dinner here on our trips to New York. The food is great and the building is gorgeous. Ramon took great care of us on our last trip, in fact, all the staff is fun and very courteous. Take your time at Barbetta and enjoy everything they have to offer. It will be an amazing experience.

Super sweet and friendly staff. Food was really good and we loved the outdoor seating in their garden. Beautiful decor and amazing ambiance.

I treated my friend for her birthday during restaurant week and we both ordered from the restaurant week menu. This was $45.00 each for an appetizer, entree and dessert. We both had two glasses of wine which jacked up the total price. With that said, the impeccable service, ambiance and quality do the food is apparent from this over 100 year culinary institution. You really like you are in an old school Italian villa. They have a beautiful backyard to dine in or a fancy dining room. I highly recommend Barbettas. And I forgot how much I missed the Hells Kitchen area.

One word: EDUARDO. This waiter is phenomenal, and his stories had our entire tableOther than Eduardo, time coming to Barbetta and second time sitting in the beautiful courtyard, that feels like you are sitting on the middle of a Roman palazzo. You would never know this was by busy Time Square!

We came here after seeing a show since it was close by and I was deceived by the website. There was only a Prix fixe menu and we were told the ala cart menu isn't available until after 8pm. We decided to stay and try the menu. The food was just acceptable. Nothing great. Mozzarella and tomato is plain. Not even a balsamic drizzle. I had the roasted vegetable soup (the best part of the meal). My companion had the salmon which was good mostly because of the cucumber herb purée under it. I had chicken and fennel. The chicken was thin and dry with no real seasoning. The fennel wasn't worth eating as it had no flavor. The salad was just base greens with vinaigrette. Not even a tomato in sight. Dessert was the best part. I wouldn't bother coming here again. The staff was very attentive and friendly so they earned this place another star or I would have done 2 stars.

Doesn't get much better than this. Top notch and great value. Came for lunch the Saturday of July 4th weekend. Really enjoyed my 3 course pre five lunch. Really great value at $39. Includes appetizer, main course, dessert and coffee. Fabulous tranquil garden to dine in to escape the madness of New York City. Also got a complimentary glass of moscato. Highly recommend. Will come again.

Let's start with some positive. The restaurant is beautiful and the presentation of the food is lovely. The staff however is snotty. Coat check tries to shame you for not checking and then asks you not to hang over the back of your chair (every other table had coats on the back of chairs). The waiter seems miffed when we only wanted water. The gentleman who brought us bread (20 min later) was actually WONDERFUL the only bright point of our service experience. Dinner took a while and was presented beautifully. I ordered the chicken (house specialty) and it was dry and burned. No one asked how the food was so I did not get a chance to provide feedback. My desert was yummy but did not make up for all the negatives. It's their loss as I was researching places to host an event. Major let down

This is a great option if you're looking for something fancy and decadent. They offer a pre theater price fixed menu with 4 courses as well as a la carte, but the 4 course dinner had a great selection and perfect portion sizes. Food was fresh and simple and servers were attentive and friendly, not to mention the space was beautiful and elegant- great for a fancy pre theater dinner or an upscale occasion!

The food is delicious. It is like being in Italy. Very authentic Italian cuisine. The service is amazing too as you will get attention from the staff who are very knowledgeable and have great taste in food. The ambiance is amazing too so you can enjoy your meal with your family and friends for your special occasions. We went for two separate trips with our family.

My first experience there was horrible. And it was my birthday! Where to start...well, when we were seated, we notice an ant crawling n our utensils. The busboy changed them for us and apologized. The waiter that came to take our order was sneezing and coughing over my husband. The just found it strange that as soon as he came by us, that happened. Before he came and after he left us and all the rest of the night, he did not sneeze. Then after we got our appetizer, he kept coming over hovering over my husband and his food asking how is the food, etc. Hubby was so turned off. Afraid some of his spit flew in his soup. Then when it was time to order our main course, the menu was so confusing and wounded up getting something completely different than what we thought we ordered. So instead of calling over the waiter for fear of him talking to us so close, we just decided to eat it. We did not like it. So between him and the busboy, we could not eat in peace. He was worrying about why I am not eating something and the busboy constantly asking if we were finished with this or with that. What I will say was nice was the fact our waiter brought over some Crème Brulée with a candle and sung happy birthday to me. But after that, we saw another ant crawling on our table. Needless to say, we took one bite of the desserts, which was not good by the way, and left.

We walked in, we were greeted by the lovely Suzanna as she checked in our coats. Then the very nice maître de Shahin sat us down in a wonderful intimate table against the wall. I ordered the gnocchetti and my husband had penne. We then ordered the filet mignon with roasted potatoes, followed by an amazing crème brûlée and fresh strawberries. A perfect date night! We will be coming back!

What an amazing place! Never been before but saw a TikTok of oldest Italian restaurants in NYC , this one caught my eye because my dad grew up on 48 street Well we booked a table to celebrate my daughters graduation from culinary school ICE and you did not disappoint! The food was fabulous, the place just gorgeous and the staff surprised Emma with a congratulations dessert We will be back !

Ambiance and Service is fabulous. Eduardo was a treat to meet and added personality and character to the evening. The food was great and reasonably priced. Highly recommend

WOW, WOW, WOW! I had such a terrific time coming here for a date with my boyfriend. We were beyond charmed by our server, Eduardo. The combination of atmosphere, and hospitality are what makes this a very special place. It felt like going on vacation. So fun to people watch, and be in an atmosphere that makes you feel like you took a time machine back 100 years. I LOVE Barbetta.

I don't typically disparage restaurants, I GREATLY appreciate the craft of cooking and serving food.. but yikes. This is the most fantastically mediocre and overpriced-for-no-reason restaurant I've been to in NYC. And I eat out often. I feel especially bad because everyone from the maitre-d to the servers was super nice. Very hospitable! And the ambience of the rear garden area was beautiful. But the bread was stale, they also served the bread with no butter, the portions were skimp, and I'm not even Italian but I regularly make a 10x better ragu at home while half paying attention. The crab pasta dish was very dry and minimal on the crab... if we weren't rushing to catch a show I would have had to fight that bill. Food just straight up wasn't good. I've had 10x more enjoyable eating experiences ordering pasta take out! For $200 spent dollars between 2 people, I expect better. 2 out of 5, do not recommend!

I have not been to Barbetta in a few years now, but my family and I had a great time here so I'd like to share what I remember about eating here. The food was only ok (considering the prices), but I would still go back because of the unique experience and ambiance. It's one of those places that has not changed much in the several decades it's been open. The calm, refined interior of this place is only heightened by the intense commerciality and grit of walking through Times Square to get there. A pianist plays soft classical music on a baby grand piano in the corner among large, round, wooden, white-linen covered dining tables that are arranged spaciously throughout the dining room. Chandeliers and ornate sconces adorn the ceilings and walls. Servers in black tie attire dutifully attend the tables. Our server was an older man who had worked at Barbetta for a long time. He hung around our table to share stories about the original owners of the restaurant and how it's changed over the years, even going so far as to bring us framed pieces of news clippings with articles about the restaurant. We were very interested in what he was saying so we didn't mind that he stayed at our table for so long, but he still politely gave us our space when the first course arrived. We each got the prixe fixe, which is not a bad deal for 3 courses. The food was good, but bland and nothing unique or memorable in itself. Once I added a little extra salt to each course, everything was good. I still did not feel like the quality of the food was quite in line with the prices, but, like I mentioned, part of what you're paying for is the experience. For example, I learned that there was a historical reason the food was relatively bland. Our server told us that one of the founding principles of the restaurant was to prepare food with minimal salt so as to accommodate the health-conscious patrons and backers. This principle apparently originated from the fact that the restaurants primary owners/backers were physicians, some of whom were cardiologists. I don't recall all the details, but the idea was that these doctors wanted a place to eat out where they could have food with minimal salt that was therefore more heart-healthy. I don't remember much else except that all the desserts were cold (think chilled) which we did not expect and the service was superb.

Unfortunately, I am 90% sure I got food poisoning here. About 5 hours after eating dinner at Barbetta, I developed a strong headache (I virtually never get headaches, much less strong ones). I went to sleep and hoped it would go away, but woke up after only 2 hours with an even worse headache, and vomited out everything I ate. Within 20 minutes post-vomit all those symptoms were gone, so I'm fairly sure this was a Barbetta issue. Otherwise, this was a 3 star review. The food was enjoyable and well made, but not extraordinary. The service was good. It's also just a bit pricey for what it is, in my opinion.

Food was mediocre but overpriced. Service was spotty. Sadly the location is what was the best. They should up their game, charge less or make their customers feel appreciated. Pesto was delicious but other meals were nothing special.

BEST Northern Italian restaurant in New York. Rabbit is cooked authentically and is delicious. Ambiance is spectacular. Service is superb. Smoked salmon appetizer highly recommended. Gnocchi with light cream sauce are as airy as pillows. Great place to impress or to celebrate or just have an exquisite meal. Highly recommend.

A very enjoyable fine dinning experience with top shelf service. Excellent choice for a private group.
