Yelp
Barboursville gets five stars from me mostly for the great location: just perfect for a beautiful afternoon on a spring day in Virginia. Or any time of the year.
Their tasting is a bit over the top, there's over 20 wines to taste, (and it's not any more expensive than your typical Cville area tasting)! So if you want to leave the tasting tipsy, they've got you, but I felt like I had to take lecture-grade notes to even keep track of which ones I preferred and why (and it was one of the few tastings where I actually spit some of the wine into the provided jugs, so I wouldn't get too lit before lunch).
Most of the sweeter wines I didn't like, but that's because I'm not into sweet wine. When we got to the last group of reds, there were a couple wines I definitely enjoyed, and the Barbera stood out as my favorite of the whole lot.
Also, a slight sidenote: you can keep the tasting glass after the tasting, and the wee Barboursville glass is my favorite of all the winery glasses I have collected over the years. Small with a prismed stem, perfect for a nip of sherry or dessert wine after dinner. Unique and cute.
After the marathon tasting, my friends and I chose a couple bottles that we could all agree on, and brought them with our packed lunch out onto the beautiful, sunny grounds for a picnic. We picnicked on the lawn a short walk down the lane from the tasting room and it was picturesque, with trees flanking our views on each side, green grass, and even on a day where the tasting room was busy, we had the lawn all to ourselves.
The historic, and crumbling, mansion was fun to walk around and had great alcoves for taking some really nice photos of our group.
Would love to revisit on another sunny afternoon, bring another picnic, and stay again until the sun starts to set behind the old mansion.
