The Best Italian Restaurants in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"Chef Fabrizio Caprioli serves up the flavours of northern Italy, with dishes like eggplant pizza and a seafood tagliatelle that tastes like a trip to the Adriatic. It’s a charming, modern Mile End spot, with specials changing throughout the week, dishes that feel positively luxurious for a (mostly) under $20 price tag, and an extensive vinyl collection." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

I brought my sister here for her birthday and we were both very happy with the experience. All of the courses were delicious. The portions seem small at first but we were both full by the end of the night. I especially loved the panna cotta which I had never tried before. The atmosphere was my favourite part; it is a very intimate setting with beautiful music and ambience. If I could afford it, I would eat here every week. I will certainly be back. Thank you, Barcola, for a great night!

This restaurant is a beautiful spot in Montreal, loved the decoration, and the owner and his wife are very friendly and nice. We went there in month of August and they had different menu compared to the rest of the year. I really liked tbe smoked salmon on grilles bokchoy. Panne cotta was too soft but the taste was nice and brownie was very nice. You need to book your table in advance.

Hands down one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in all aspects and one that I will never forget! It felt more like visiting the home of a friend, I felt that comfortable. And the food was incredible. It felt like a lot of love was put into each course

The food was delicious and the service was great. Fresh and high quality ingredients - the three courses were perfection. We will Definitely be back! My only regret is not taking any photos. To include in my review. Very cool atmosphere and we loved all the music that was playing as well.

We were so excited to try this place and for that reason we went but our experience was not the best. The concept seems pretty interesting: a weekly tasting menu. The place is small, charming and cosy. The service definitely can improve, it seems that the owner is the waitress, she was nice, described to us the menu and the concept, but nothing special or impressive, we never had water refill or a coffee suggestion. We took two cocktails, good portion of alcohol and I can say, it was the best of our experience. Our menu was : Green salad with duck breast and red fruits, it was tasty and fruity, an interesting combination, I will never chose that plate but it was good. The second plate was rigatoni with three tomatoes sauce, for my taste the portion was pretty small, the sauce and the pasta were nothing surprising, it seems more average and bland. The third dish was pork chop with butter and rosemary, potatoes and mustard sauce, and it was zero impressive, the sauce was salty and liquid with a conventional piece of pork, however the potatoes were amazing, tasty and delicious. At the end we were still hungry and because of the small portions we order two desserts, to our surprise the portions were bigger that all the other dishes, the chocolate cake was good, to sweet for our taste, after four bites you don't want to eat more, and the worst was the panna cotta, I literally felt I was eating a jar of jam, sickeningly sweet!!! I had a horrible headache after eating all that sugar. We felt that the ingredients were not so fresh or high quality, it can be maybe for the price, but I have been in similar tasting menu (same price) and better quality. Not the best experience for a place with 4.6 rating, feeling disappointed by the whole experience and the worst thing is that we paid $210 for a meal and we went to bed hungry and with headache.

Went there in august, on a Wednesday for the apperitivo tasting menu, specified it on the booking but when I got there the lady told us that it's not available. Instead proposed us overpriced tomatoes with salt and olive oil (yes almost 30$ for uncooked tomates) and a spaetzle dish that's not even Italian in my repertoire. Music was too loud, i couldn't even hear the server talking and her recommendations. It was so deceiving I went to go get bagels afterwards to finish my meal. I had high hopes, but unfortunetly won't be back

First time to this lovely bistro. The first impression when I walked in the place was wow. It's so beautifully decorated and all the vinyl was impressive (they sell them too). We sat on the terrace. Their menu, a 3 course meal, is pretty limited with only a choice of beef or salmon. However, they change the menu weekly! The first course was Prosciutto with cheese mousse and spinach. The second course was linguine and cherry tomatoes. The last course was either the steak or the salmon. The dessert is not included in the 3 course meal but I had the panna cotta. One word for our meal : excellent! Everything was so flavorful, almost like a punch, and well balanced. My favourite was the prosciutto dish. It was original and so well thought. It's a small and cozy restaurant with warm staff. You'll not be disappointed.

What a great experience! It took me a while to write a review but I had too and these owners deserve it. They are lovely. The Ella Fitzgerald atmosphere is great. I love the simple menu and the fact they can nicely adjust in case of food restrictions. I love the fact you can buy venial records. The place is warm intimate. The chef is talented and craft his great meals alone in the kitchen. HE has time to serve them to you. Thank you. We will come back.

Yelp
I've been to brunch at Barcola Bistro for two weekends in a row and had a wonderfully consistent experience at this brand-new bistro in the Mile End. The first brunch plate I ordered was a croissant halved and filled with whipped ricotta ($8), custard and fresh raspberries, served with a dollop of nutella and pears -- it was sinfully delicious and tasted as good as it looked. The following weekend, I ordered the house-smoked salmon benedict ($14), which was also fantastic. Served with poached eggs, potatoes and a better-than-hollandaise sauce (maybe a new take on bechamel?), it was flavourful and rich without being too filling. If brunch isn't your thing, you can always stop in and try their Italian hot chocolate -- marocchino -- and browse the vintage LPs for sale in the back of the dining room. In a city loaded with brunch options, Barcola Bistro serves up a unique brunch menu in an eclectic, northern Italian setting. This is the place for you if you crave artfully crafted cuisine in an intimate yet casual atmosphere. The waitstaff are very friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable about the menu.

Yelp
We had such a wonderful evening at Barcola tonight! The food was amazing, with an emphasis on local ingredients and quality. The owner served us and she was incredibly helpful and warm. The gnocchi was so tender and the sauce fresh and perfectly seasoned. The ravioli was inspired and delicious. A perfect meal! Thank you!

Yelp
We had a very lovely Italian brunch here, and the service was really pleasant and nice as well. We shared two plates, one that came with some grilled bread and spreads which included a tasty burrata cheese with honey and nuts. The other was a salmon dish with a pretty ordinary arugula salad but the salmon was perfect. The space is somewhat small but very nice and quaint, perfect for a party of 2 (and some people came to brunch on their own).

Yelp
Eat your dinner first before coming here . That's how tiny the portions are . Food is tasty though ( the two bites that you get ) The service is fine and the restaurant looks nice . But if you are even slightly hungry , avoid this place

Yelp
After eating poutine two days in a row I was after something a bit more substantial and Barcola ticked that box perfectly. A new menu offered each day with fresh produce. The staff were extremely nice. Order the steak and Spritz Aperol.

Yelp
Friendly service, however bland & overpriced food. We skipped wine & dessert as both seemed absurdly expensive.

Yelp
After hearing rave reviews about this restaurant, my wife and I decided to try it. The service staff was so rude that we left within 5 minutes. The waiter spoke unintelligable French and did not offer any menus at all.

Rebecca B.

Yelp
We had the *most* magical meal at Barcola. Delightful food, impeccable and warm service, delicious wine, the tastiest of pastas and desert, an unhurried and completely perfect evening.

Yelp
Truly authentic on all levels. It's a place I keep on going back to for different occasions. Great food (fresh and simple), pleasant service, cozy atmosphere, what more can you ask for?

Yelp
Stopped in for an Americano on a cold autumn day. The ambiance (decor, music) was very pleasant, the barista very kind, and the coffee absolutely delicious.

Yelp
Awesome Italian food. Classic and great price. Prossecco night on Thursday.

Yelp
I've had the pleasure of brunching at Barcola on two occasions. Both times were very satisfying experiences. If you're looking for tasty dishes, fast and friendly service + reasonable prices, this is it. Also, two thumbs up for the jazzy, laid-back decor. Barcola's the kind of place where I can easily see myself becoming a regular.

Yelp
Very tasty, portions very small and the menus is equally small. Cannoli with pistachios were great, but again limited options.

John L.

Yelp
Simply great. Food is constantly delicious and service is outstanding. We have been eating there recurrently for the past three years and thursday evenings' menus are our favourite.

Yelp
Gave 1 star because the staff was nice...I had the degustation menu wich was, for all services, bland. The portions were so small i hate my main course in 5 minutes...I would never recommend this place to anyone...it sucks.

Stacey D.

Yelp
Barcola is a great place to get tasty food in a casual setting. Dishes are really homemade and thoughtfully prepared. They also have sandwiches for those in a hurry. If you are a Nespresso fan, you will love the coffee, they have the biggest Nespresso machine that I have ever seen. And chocolate lovers will freak out over the hot chocolate! This is not your regular hot chocolate! Imagine the very best milk chocolate in a liquid form and served warm in a cup. Absolutely wonderful!! And if you are a vintage record fan, they display and play vintage records.

Yelp
I have to say I only tried it recently for dinner and I was a bit disappointed, very pretentious place, starting with the fact that the menu consisted only on vegetarian & fish-based dishes, I love fish but my husband couldn't find anything of his liking, all the dishes had cream sauces, which for a lactose intolerant like me, wasn't very forgiving... I still went ahead and order the scallops for entrée and salmon pasta for main, scallops were really good I give them that, the salmon not so much, it was basically tasteless and as I say bathing in cream sauce.. Secondly, my husband's Tuna on eggplants was raw in the middle, call me unsophisticated but I don't think that's very appealing, maybe for a Tataki but for self-called "Traditional Italian cuisine" I don't think so. Also, it took ages to get our drinks and they ran out of wine and still gave me a half glass of wine, I would have rather have something else but anyways, they were very proactive in charging me for a 3/4 glass when I only got half of it. All that topped with a expensive bill to which they didn't even say Thank-you, when we paid... We go to a lot of restaurants and travel a lot, and honestly I think people get easily fooled here in Montreal with all these pretentious, so-called authentic restaurant, that could easily be any average bistrot in Europe.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, good service, delicious coffee. The breakfast itself was definitely lack-lustre though. The baguette served with breakfast seemed suspiciously not same-day fresh, my Italian sausage plate was artfully garnished with green grapes. Pretty to look at, but they weren't the best quality and some more fresh fruit on the plate would have been a nice thought. The Italian sausage was nice and comforting but it was topped with a dollop of mayonnaise. Clearly of the homemade variety but really unnecessary on a nice greasy sausage. My egg Benedict was perfectly cooked, warm, with a nice creamy glob of slightly under seasoned hollandaise. Oh and the potatoes we're perplexing in their simplicity. Also I'm always weary when there's no salt and pepper on the table. From personal experience in one of many restaurants, it's the sign of a chef with a little too much pride. Fact of living in multicultural MTL, we don't all have the same palate. One nice touch these guys deserve kudos for was the mini glasses of Nutella, and jams brought to the table. So here's my official review. Give these guys a month or two. Let them work out the kinks, and then when spring hits pop by and see what's on offer. They've a ways to go if they want to become a Mile End staple but somehow I'm hopeful Barcola will step up it's game.
