Best Pizza in Boston | Eater Boston

"Price: $ The South Shore’s famous bar pizza has taken South Boston by storm. Located inside the lively Castle Island Brewery, Bardo’s brings the crispy-edged deliciousness of bar pies to the neighborhood. Must-try dish: Nothing says New England quite like an IPA from a Boston brewery and a pickle-covered bar pizza. (While not the first thing that comes to mind for a pizza topping, pickles are the norm for bar pies and should be experienced at least once.)" - Erika Adams

The 15 Best Pizza Places In Boston

"Bardo’s is located in Southie’s Castle Island Brewery, and they specialize in New England South Shore-style bar pizza, which is the closest Boston can claim to its own style of pizza. Baked in a small pan, the cheese extends over the edge of the crust, giving each bite a satisfying crunch. It’s greasy in the best way, with a cracker-like crust, and you’ll find interesting and must-order toppings like Portuguese linguica and pickles. Ask for it extra crispy and pregame your pie with some excellent garlic and hot honey wings. " - tanya edwards

Boston Bar Pizza Champion Bardo’s Takes Its Show on the Road - Eater Boston

"One of the city’s finest South Shore-style bar pizza purveyors — Bardo’s, run by a deeply rooted Massachusetts food industry family, the Lombardo’s — is taking its show on the road. The owners have invested in a nearly 25-foot-long pizza trailer capable of producing the same buttery, crispy, thin-crust pizza that has landed Bardo’s plenty of local accolades from its South Boston outpost. Starting on May 1, the truck will be stationed at Castle Island’s brewery in Norwood." - Erika Adams

Where to Eat South Shore-Style Bar Pizza

"Norwood’s Castle Island Brewing expanded to South Boston in late 2021, and it has a South Shore-style bar pizzeria onsite called Bardo’s, from the family that until recently ran the decades-old Randolph event space Lombardo’s (you’ve seen the giant chandelier from the road.) Bardo’s features a few fancy pies alongside its standard topping options, like the “happy camper” — pesto, fresh mozzarella, kale, roasted red peppers, and parmesan. There’s also a gluten-free cauliflower crust available." - Terrence Doyle, Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Google
Good bar pizzas with so many options, you’ll can’t go wrong with what you get, especially with the dill ranch on the side! The sweet dreams and pickle pizza are my favorites. Usually pretty busy on the weekends since it’s inside a brewery.

Google
- excellent bar pizza. Lots of delicious specialty options; you can’t go wrong - very kind customer service - tons of space and variety of seating

Google
Solid pizza and food here. I recently came here after seeing twotastebuddiez’ post on IG. The languica pizza was decent, but the flavors were pretty one note. It was cooked nicely, with every bite having a slight crisp to it which I liked (south shore pizza in a nutshell). The sandwich was a bit more disappointing. It was pretty boring and I felt like I could have made it at home, so the price point too made it feel not worth it.

Google
My wife said this place was rated one of the best pizza places in US. I don’t know about that because I haven’t tried them all but we did eat the whole thing. The brewery attached has a wide variety as well. On my go back to list.

Google
Came with the Family. Liked that you can sit where you want, it is a nice open space. Order your beer and food at the bar, they give you a number to set on the table. Pizza was out shortly, and delicious. We ended up getting five, my oldest finished a bar pie himself, we couldn't get him to stop. He wanted to go for the second pie, but Mom was not having it 😁. I recommend stopping by with friends or family, three big screens on the wall, music, and excellent bar pizza.

Google
Got take out from here and was disappointed with the quality of the food for the price they charge. Paid $43 for this order. The 10 inch pizza which was undercooked, the onions were burnt to a crisp, and honestly just didn’t taste great. The pretzel bites look like mini potatoes. Would not recommend.

Google
Amazing bar pizza, nice staff, and a great patio. It’s a Boston must! The new buns on their secret menu on Wednesdays are delicious too.

Google
Pulled up to Bardo's while visiting the area recently n craving a bar pie because sometimes you want something familiar to hit just a lil different. Im happy to report that I was not disappointed....all ordering is done online which is a lil meh but lets get back to the main event here.... This Pizza!! Went w the "Social Climber" which has the famed lombardo's sausage, red onions, n mama lil's pickled spicy pepps... This pie looked almost better than it ate!! And boy did it eat....someone on here mentioned voodoo dust and I am inclined to concur theres some magical mind controlling nano particles spread all throughout this delectable round as one bite instantly transports you onto the back of that doge coin rocket orbiting near Uranus or something. The crust is light and crisp and pillowy w just a bit more thicc to her hips than most other chicks...this is one you take home to mama after treating her to a 3 course meal. Everything on this pie was on point and from the sausage to the peppers to the sauce n cheese. Def one of the better bar pies I've had n hit the spot!

Yelp
As a pizza lover I have no idea how this placed slipped past me as their bar style pizza is phenomenal! Do note that if you follow the directions to Bardo's Pizza it'll take you to Castle Island Brewing Co which confused me initially until I realized that Bardo's is inside! Items we ordered (to go) as of 1/2024: - M Street Beach - $12.50 -This Kale salad is absolutely fantastic. I loved the cured tomatoes and grilled focaccia that's in here. One of the best Kale salads I've had. - Cheese Pizza (half mushroom) - $12 for cheese only - Pretty solid cheese pizza though not the standout here. - Sweet Dreams - $17 - This was the best pizza we've had. The hot honey could be spicier but it perfectly complements the pepperoni and ricotta that's on the pizza. I would 100% recommend this! I definitely plan on coming back and eating in to ensure maximum freshness (and try their other offerings too!).

Yelp
More like a 3.5 but bumping it 4 since I had it to go which isn't going to be as fresh. I think I just prefer a more NY style slice. This was like a thin crust pan pizza but done well and very tasty. Got the social climber pizza which was great. I wish the sausage had been a bit more flavorful and pronounced but still a solid place for bar pizza.

Yelp
As a self proclaimed SSBP expert (I make my own too), I was urged by my SIL to try Bardo's. I gotta say, it's delicious and fresh and has knocked off Town Spa from my list of local favorites. The Castle Island brewery in Southie where Bardo's is housed has a great family-friendly vibe. Street parking may be a bit of a challenge, but we went mid week at noontime and found a spot nearby. The staff are super friendly and accommodating. You find a seat, set up a tab at the bar, and keep going up to order until you close the tab. Food is delivered to your table. There are big screen TVs sprinkled throughout. The Nitro Sweet Brown was a notable favorite, as was the cranberry sour. There's even red or white wine for the non-beer drinkers.

Yelp
Bardo's Pizza shares space with Castle Island Brewery. It's a great combo, considering you can never go wrong with pairing beer and pizza. I ordered the pepperoni pizza and it didn't take long to come out. It was thin and not too large. Definitely not my usual type of pizza, but it had a buttery crust that elevated it. It was a satiating meal. Price was reasonable too. Do be aware that pizza last call is much earlier than beer last call.

Yelp
The pie I got was great. Loved all the flavors together and I'd never seen it before when I was out. Servers and bartenders weren't super helpful when we asked for water glasses and actually gave us attitude for asking. Cool interior, great spot to watch a football game and someone was having a birthday party there which looked nice

Yelp
I love bardo's pizza. The crust is such a unique texture, almost like a thin pan pizza with chew. They do a new flavor every week or so and I love trying new ones at trivia night. The staff is great and it's always a good place for an after work drink and snack.

Yelp
If you're looking for bar pizza, wings, and good beer -- Bardo's is awesome. The Linguica and pickle pizzas are my personal favorites, and the wings are perfect. So many other spots in Southie (and the rest of Boston, for that matter) seem to think that breaded wingdings are a perfectly acceptable form of chicken wing. Thankfully, Bardo's has better taste than to think anyone would want to eat that, and makes real chicken wings with a plethora of sauce options to choose from. Don't even get me started on the sandwiches: the BON YAH! and Nana's Classic are DELICIOUS. period. There are just a few things I am not a huge fan of: 1. If you aren't going in for a whole meal and don't want to share a pizza, the options for appetizers are very limited if you don't want wings (they do have a lot of sauce options though!). 2 out of the 4 shareables are just potato chips topped with other stuff, which brings me to #2... 2. The potato chips. I have never once been excited to see potato chips on my plate at a restaurant or bar. I don't care how good your "house made" chips are. They are never as good as a french fry or literally any other side option (even a salad). The chips end up in the trash every time I get food here. If for some reason you love potato chips, just ignore this and try them yourself. 3. The ambience inside the brewery. It is LOUD most of the time. The way the interior is designed makes every noise so much worse. If you go when it is even moderately busy, expect to have to shout at whoever you're with to have any conversation. To reiterate, the food here is delicious. The beer is great. You should go here.

Yelp
This is the best pizza in Mass. The hours are limited and they don't deliver, but it is worth the trouble. Try it.

Yelp
Flavors - 4.5/5 Textures - 4/5 Presentation - 4/5 Value for Money - 3.5/5 Would return? Yes Must-try: Any pizza! I looooooved this pizza!!! The flavors were so good for any pizza that I tried - cheese, pickle, the social climb and the special of the day (ricotta, pepperoni and hot honey). Did you just read pickle? YES, and I also thought it would be disgusting but it just works. The toppings are generous and really well spread out, which makes every bite to taste amazing. They also must have a special cheese blend that makes even the cheese pizza to taste special. The bottom of the pizza could be crispier, but the top is so crispy that it makes up for it. Like every bar pizza, the crispy cheese edge just delivers! I found these addicting.

Yelp
I went to Bardo's Pizza located in Castle Island Brewery in Southie. This past weekend was their 1 year anniversary where they had special select menu items! They had the "Andiamo Special" which included a hot honey chicken sandiwch and a 16oz pint of their Andiamo Lager potato chip beer for only $23. They also had a Jetty Mimosa which was their champagne-esque kettle sour blended with OJ We tried the mimosas, salads, the hot honey chicken sandwich, the buffalo chicken bar pizza, the Apricot Mango Sour Sorbet pops and their churros! My personal favorites were the hot honey chicken sandwich, the buffalo chicken pizza and the mango sour sorbet pops. Everything was also very reasonabley priced. I recommend you grab a beer and pizza there after work or for the next Patriot's game on Sunday. Rating: Ambience: 7/10 Food: 7/10 Affordability: 9/10

Yelp
It was pretty good, south shore has the absolute best bar pizza by far. But it was good

Yelp
The pizza was good, we tried the pickle pizza for something different and it was yummy, but bar pizza just isn't my favorite type of pizza so I wasn't blown away and it could have been cooked longer in the oven. The place was really busy so I understand they had a lot going on, but by the time our pizza got to us it was already room temperature and only getting colder. We also tried the pretzel bites and those were very good, but somehow more expensive than the pizza? Overall, Bardo's was good - definitely will re-order from here next time we're at Castle Island...because you don't really have a choice ;)

Joe S.

Yelp
I got a cheese pizza and a mushroom pizza from the pizza trailer in Norwood, so it may be a little different in Boston. However, If you are expecting the pizza to taste like Town Spa, Lynwood, Bosss Bah Pizza, Poopsie's, or Hoey's; in my opinion, I think you will be a little disappointed. I did not think the pizza was bad, but it wasn't like the traditional bar pizza my wife and I was expecting and wanted.

K M.

Yelp
Had the roasted wings, cheese pizza and pepperoni pizza. Love love love! Everything was made to perfection. I can't wait to try everything on their menu. It's hard to find a good bar pizza in the area. As someone who grew up eating Town Spa pizza I had my doubts at first. I've had bar pizza around this way that I would nevaaa try again but they proved me wrong. 100% highly recommend. I haven't reviewed a restaurant in a while but I felt this was necessary to do so!

Joseph M.

Yelp
Ben wanting to try this spot for over a year, finally went in on this rainy Saturday afternoon also happened to be my bday; I ordered a larger and a pizza. My beer wasn't that cold , I waited over 40 minutes for my pizza, I asked the bartender to check on my pizza, he told me the kitchen is backed up but he'll check on it. I'm a service industry worker my self so I get but when the bartender brought me my pizza it was cold, so clearly it came out some time ago but the bartender didn't bother to check on it and the place was steady and not crazy busy. The staff just didn't seem too care

Joann F.

Yelp
It's always stupid good. The pickle pizza but really every pizza I've tried is beyond amazing.
google avatar

Karla M.

Yelp
By far one of the best pizzas I've EVER had. The edges had a nice char to them and the pizza top was golden and cooked to perfection. I'm not sure if the sausage is homemade but I thoroughly enjoyed the extra cumin is had. The pizza was a bit salty but since I'm a salt fanatic I was not one bit upset about it. I absolutely love sharp cheese and I could definitely taste a sharp cheese which I think helps to bring all the flavors together. Often times pizza will just have mozzarella which dilutes the flavors since mozzarella is a very subtle cheese. I am also not the biggest fan of pizza sauce and this pizza barely had any so I was very pleased in that department. I also liked that it was thin crust, so you didn't have to worry about the bread consuming all the flavor--instead I feeling like all the toppings were absorbed by the pizza dough which made it that much better. I did do take out so It's probably my fault but I did wish the pizza crust were a bit crunchier. So there can be a change in texture from bottom crust (crunchy) to top of pizza (soft). Overall I would highly recommend getting pizza from here. I think the size is okay for two people (who eat normal portions) and it's $15 which isn't too bad for the quality.

Yelp
Literally obsessed with Bardo's. I could literally go here once a week. They're located in a brewery (which is a huge plus for me), and they have such delicious bar pies. I love the pickle pizza, the wings, and their churro bites for dessert. What's not to love about this spot?! Check them out if you're ever in Southie!
google avatar

Wences G.

Yelp
Bardo's Pizza has a great atmosphere coupled with the brewery, Castle Island Brewery. Great ideas for abstract pizzas but the overall outcome could be described as bowling alley pizza. We ordered some pretzels for an appetizer that unfortunately came after our pizzas came to the table. Not sure if the pretzel machine was broken like a McDonald's ice cream machine or the order was forgotten. Either way, they were yummy in my tummy when they came out. They have some too tier ginger ale but don't order a Shirley Temple because Bardos can't make one. Overall, if you're looking for a nice bar to drink some craft beer, mediocre pizza with delayed appetizers, this is your spot. Also they play football on their multiple TV's.
google avatar

Thomas V.

Yelp
Amazing pizza and nice that it's co-located with Castle Island Brewery for great beers. We got multiple items and highly recommend the Social Climber pizza and Cutlet Out sandwich. The Social Climber was full of flavor and goes down well with the variety of beers. The Cutlet Out was a well-balanced chicken sandwich, not too greasy either which was a welcome change to most fried chicken sandwiches. Also got the Sweet Dreams and Happy Camper pizzas. The Happy Camper was a bit "too healthy" tasting with the kale but the Sweet Dreams was good. Great atmosphere inside and good for families/young kids given the open space.

Yelp
It was close so I decided to give it a try. So glad I did. Pizza heaven I will be returning.

Yelp
Pizza is heaven location is so common people are friendly service is fast and food are very fresh and delicious

Scar L.

Yelp
Pizza and food was good. But god, the woman working there called Meredith is rude and extremely sassy for no apparent reason. Asking us for our IDs even though we just wanted pizza, and telling the hostess THEY WILL NOT HAVE ANY ALCOHOL, like okay we get it ma'am, not like we wanted alcohol either. Its the constant repetition and talking down to us that annoyed us, like we are clearly in our mid 20s and said multiple times that we just wanted PIZZA! Like damn let us eat woman. Honestly don't have her greet customers if she really is so unskilled when it comes to basic human interactions. On the other hand, food was great and abbey is a WONDERFUL hostess.she is sweet and super helpful.
google avatar

Reb K.

Yelp
We loved it here! So many delicious pizzas, sandwiches, shareables and more! It's a comfortable vibe and the food just tastes so good. Will be back for sure!

Yelp
Good pizza if you're getting brews but not destination food. It is close to South Shore pizza but not crispy enough.
google avatar

Alyssa P.

Yelp
I LOVE Bardo's Pizza so much!! Not only is their staff and service great, but their pizza is incredible. They are apart of Castle Island Brewing so feel free to grab a nice beer while you eat some pizza. Their pickle pizza is one of my favorite pizzas ever. Also, they have rotating of the day so make sure to check one of those out! Highly recommend this spot, you will not regret it at all!
google avatar

Aubrey C.

Yelp
Very respectable south shore bar pizza that you don't need to travel to Randolph or beyond for. Extra points for being in a brewery (Castle Island) which is a big plus. The bartenders are super nice as well.

Brian B.

Yelp
Great pizza, fast service in a really pleasant place to be. All good & worth giving a try. We did, and now have a new go to place for pizza.

Zach H.

Yelp
Some of the best pizza I've ever had. If I lived in Boston I would eat this at least once a week.

Gregory G.

Yelp
By far the best south shore style bar pizza in Boston. It's the closest thing to Town Spa. Excellent service and kid friendly. Plus, the beer is great.

Ryan M.

Yelp
Bardo's is THE BEST! I've been several times and have always enjoyed their pizza & sandwiches but what separates them from other spots is the exceptional service! We held a company event there recently and everyone was impressed with the hospitality and food spread they had setup. Whether you are going with a friend, the entire family, or a work outing, Bardo's will make sure you have a great experience and leave full on delicious bar pies!

Ben J.

Yelp
The most amazing pizza I've had in years. Tried about 8 different pies. They were all great.

Yelp
If I could give this 10 stars I would! This is inside Castle Island Brewing and when I went had only been open for a few weeks. This place ran like it had been open for years. No kinks like a typical new place has. The service and staff were phenomenal and the food was even better. We did not have a reservation and found seating in the outside patio area pretty quickly. We sat at the Adirondack chairs and at first had minimal space to place the food. When Dave (owner) brought out our first pizza he noticed we would not have room for the rest of our food and went to get us another block to put our food on! He and the rest of the staff were beyond accommodating and always served with a smile! All of the pizzas were delicious! The pickle was by far one of the best bar pizzas I have had! Dave was amazing and we loved that he took the time to chat with us and ensure we enjoyed our food! He even went the extra mile and brought us over the Cutlet Out and Nana's Classic to try. I cannot say enough amazing things about both of these sandwiches. From the homemade roasted red pepper, to his grandmother's phenomenal chicken cutlet recipe these sandwiches were a home run! The cherry on top was the homemade potato chips that accompanied the sandwiches. The dill on them gave the chips just the flavor that was needed. We left with not a bad thing to say about this place. Great beer and amazing food what more could you ask for, and all right in my backyard. My friends and I will be back again very soon and may become permanent fixtures at this awesome brewery/bar/restaurant. Thank you Dave and Castle Island Brewing for putting roots in here Southie and giving us a great place to enjoy! Do not miss a chance to give this place a shot!
