Bay Area Roastery Establishes First San Diego Cafe | Eater San Diego

"Located just blocks from the beach inside Solana Beach’s Cedros Collective, I found a 1,300-square-foot cafe with a 520-square-foot dog-friendly patio and a 10-seat fire table. Founded in Santa Clara in 2003 and co-owned by Jon and Jillian Dolin (Jillian is a native San Diegan), the company moved from a wholesale focus—supplying big tech companies, restaurants, markets, and universities—to growing its retail footprint; another location is scheduled to open next year in Mountain View and they’re actively looking for an additional San Diego-area outpost. The menu features classic espresso drinks, Bonavita pour-overs, nitro cold brew, organic heirloom teas, and specialty creations such as the Voodoo (a coconut mocha made with organic milk) and the Espresso Sunrise (espresso with organic blood orange soda and lime juice). The Cedros Avenue cafe also offers a substantial food selection—various toasts, cheesy egg and spinach biscuits, salads and sandwiches, and pastries delivered daily—and plans to expand further once it secures a beer and wine license. They were offering cold brew samples and discounts on bags of retail coffee ahead of a September 28 grand opening." - Candice Woo

Bay Area Coffee Roaster Setting Up Shop in Solana Beach | Eater San Diego

"I'm excited that Silicon Valley standout Barefoot Coffee Roasters is coming to Solana Beach’s Cedros Design district as part of the newly-remodeled Cedros Collective mixed-use complex, due in early summer in a 1,300-square-foot cafe with a 540-square-foot patio. It's the company’s second cafe location and its first in Southern California; launched in 2003 as a roastery and cafe in Santa Clara, Barefoot was named a top boutique roaster by Food & Wine Magazine and is dedicated to direct-trade sourcing and roasting in small batches. In addition to specialty coffee and organic tea, the cafe will offer beer, wine, and a light food menu, feature its award-winning single-origin cold brew (also available in bottles), and serve specialty treats including the Mocha Borgia with orange and dark chocolate and the Bareffogato Sundae with espresso or cold brew, organic ice cream, chocolate, and granola. Co-owners Jon and Jillian Dolin cite the city’s appreciation for elevated coffee (comparable to its love of craft beer) as a reason for expansion, Jillian is a native San Diegan, they are actively searching for more San Diego locations, and the company also runs a cafe in Campbell and wholesales its coffee to large tech companies, restaurants, specialty markets, museums, and universities." - Candice Woo

Barefoot Coffee is a total gem right on Cedros - cool vibe, great people-watching, and even better drinks. The lavender latte and matcha were both on point and delicious. For breakfast, we had the avocado mash with egg and the breakfast tacos - both solid choices that hit the spot. Chill, tasty, and fun spot for a morning coffee and breakfast with family.

During a wet morning, we found ourselves enjoying a bold cup of coffee ☕ at Barefoot Coffee Roasters. The ambiance of Barefoot was rustic and warm, a delightful environment to enjoy conversations. In fact, many people were talking, while others worked on their laptops. Barefoot is dog friendly by offering outdoor seating. The arch crossing the road is a handy landmark to find the coffee shop. If you're in Solana Beach, then you may want to enjoy a moment at Barefoot Coffee Roasters. Personally, I look forward to my next cup of coffee at Barefoot.

Google
Good WiFi 👍🏼 Nice outdoor seating with shade, the espresso is average for the area. It’s basically the same thing as lofty or revolution roasters but $1 ice cream in summer is great for that afternoon computer work sprint.

Google
Stopped at this spot to grab some coffee and my biggest pet peeve happened at this cute coffee shop. I've been here before and had a better experience. Today the cashier was soooo busy chatting up the regulars BEHIND me that he couldn't be bothered with our order. Barista failed to give us the lemon poppy muffin to complete our order. Can't rate the food I didn't get. Common courtesy isn't so common anymore. ✌️

Google
Tired their cold brew first time and loved it. The atmosphere is rustic and cozy. They serve beer on tap, wine and kambucha. The ice cream looked appetizing. Will try next time. Thanks 🦶🦶☕️

Google
Barefoot coffee roasters has delicious drinks with very friendly service. A perfect stop after a long walk down the strip.

Google
Cant believe its my 1st time here and this is right down the street from Del Mar beaches and racetrack. My friend had a iced coffee called a Voodoo and he loved it. I had a Hot Cubano and it was amazing! Looks like you can get bagged roasted coffee and some really nice breakfast options. Lots of outdoor space as well. Ill be back!

Google
Atmosphere-2 stars- located in the design district of Solano Beach. Kinda dirty and needed some tidying up. Service- 2 stars- staff not so welcoming and seemed bored/unhappy. Food- got an Iced Caramel Latte. It was just ok- nothing to brag about. There are a lot of cafes/coffee shops in the area. You can find better.

Yelp
Awesome coffee shop in Solana Beach! We stopped in for some weekend coffee and breakfast and had a great experience. Both the iced vanilla latte and ice Cubano latte were delicious. We also had the tri tip scramble which was very very good. Lots of options in food for baked goods, breakfast, sandwiches and much more! The location is nice with plenty of seating both inside and outside. Would be a great place to study or work as well as just get coffee and relax. Staff were super friendly and the coffee came out really quick even though they were busy. Would absolutely recommend a visit!

Yelp
I'm testing a new theory...and it's that anyone who is willing to invest in a Slayer espresso machine, they care a lot about their beans. So stop three on my Slayer-theory tour is Barefoot Coffee roasters. And for the first time, my theory is turning out to be flawed. I also have a side-theory that says if I'm offered soda water with my espresso, it's also a sign of quality. Well, Barefoot has a Slayer AND offers soda water but the espresso...misses the mark. It had a nice fruitiness but was over-roasted, resulting in a bitter shot. My son got a Voodoo iced drink that is made with chocolate, espresso, and a coconut/sweet milk blend that was delicious. So my impression that I'm walking away is that it's a little hit-and-miss. I'd give the espresso a 3 but the Voodoo saved it. I might go back if I'm on Cedros for the shops or at the farmers market, but I'll pass on them if I'm only looking for a shot by itself.

Yelp
30 mins is too long of a wait for a breakfast item. Doesn't matter what it tastes like at this point. Coffee orders are a lot faster but food service I wanted to love it too cause they use a lot of organic produce butttttt sorry not trying to spend my whole day here
google avatar

Yelp
A first time group of job seekers met here and it was the perfect place (until the blazing sun shone!). Friendly staff. Has an inside but it also has a great patio area which we pretty much took over. While most had a coffee, I also had breakfast. A tasty egg scramble with avocado, cheese and more (see picture). It was very healthy in how it was made and the portion seemed small but was actually the perfect amount! My first time out to this area, recommend it!
google avatar

Deepti A.

Yelp
A cute little cafe with a gorgeous patio in Solana beach. The baristas were very friendly. I ordered the Cedros scramble and it tasted good. Reasonably priced.
google avatar

Yelp
We popped in here for lunch and a beer one day and loved it! I loved their chicken taco and goat cheese salad, and my husband said their tri-tip quesadilla was very tasty. They had lots of outdoor seating and a cute vibe inside too. Have heard their coffee is amazing as well!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
One of my new favorite spots in SB! The coffee is great. Good variety of drink and food options. Highly recommend the chicken sandwich with chips. Cashiers are friendly and usually not a long wait line. It doesn't get packed inside so a great place to study/work.
google avatar

Daphney S.

Yelp
I've enjoyed coming here as a Solana Beach local for some time now. Unfortunately over the last few months I've noticed the service has gotten worse, the staff not very pleasant, and the food mediocre, hair in the food and long wait times. When you sit outside flies are swarming all over the place, the trash is completely overflowing. When you say "for here" and they still bring you a wasteful paper or plastic cup.... This place has potential but misses the mark.
google avatar

Jeremy S.

Yelp
Awesome place. Great coffee, amazing staff and awesome grounds. This is one of my go to places for a quick bite and an awesome cup of Joe.
google avatar

Jessica D.

Yelp
Great coffee shop to visit to grab a bite or get some work done! They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. They have a nice, private bathroom around the corner that needs a code. I got the mint matcha latte and it wasn't for me but next time I will be trying their regular matcha latte!
google avatar

Teddy B.

Yelp
Coffee was just okay. Service was very slow! Wasn't much of a line... probably had 3 people in front of me. And waited over 30 mins for 2 coffees..
google avatar

Cy T.

Yelp
What is up with bringing in the chairs over an hour before closing?! And what is up with the snotty baristas Like, you're not even on the cool part of Cedros, get a grip. This girl was barely courteous to me & after I thanked her she didn't say thank you until she saw me put a tip in the cup Their coffee is good but not the best in town & I can sit in the shade on the east-facing side of a street at Vigilante too with better coffee & a way better vibe.
google avatar

Trevor T.

Yelp
The coffee is good, but the service is pretty lackluster. Ordered a tea and they forgot about it. Took 15 minutes and had to remind them. No apology or acknowledgement. Tea was practically cold. Most of the staff was just hanging out and not doing anything even though we were waiting by the counter staring and waiting.
google avatar

Bernadette D.

Yelp
Visited recently and found it to be decent overall. The ambiance was pleasant, and the staff was polite. The coffee was good but not outstanding, and the food selection was fairly limited. I tried the matcha latte - lightly sweetened- which came with zero sweetness, and lacked the robust flavor I was hoping for. It's a fine spot for a quick caffeine fix, but it didn't leave a lasting impression.

Yelp
A disclaimer on this review, I didn't have any coffee! Just a sandwich and a cookie. I love this place for a few reasons: - plenty of seating compared to many coffee shops - lots of food options in addition to coffee - air conditioning!!! - super friendly service I had such a lovely experience here grabbing lunch to go. I had my newborn with me and couldn't stay but was looking for something quick and easy to take with me. The seasonal pesto sandwich was 5/5 - I love pesto so this was an easy win for me! The pesto was creamy, baguette was perfectly crispy and it overall hit the spot. I ordered it with a side salad but they accidentally gave me chips, so they gave me both :) Glad I could try both options - was glad to get my greens in AND some chips! They also had a gigantic cookie in the window and I decided on a whim it would be a lovely treat. The cashier also agreed that it was AMAZING and she wasn't wrong - it was just as good as it looked! Next time I'll actually try the coffee but have had a lovely experience even without their main item!

Yelp
Cedros Avenue in Solana beach is full of coffee shops and more are being added. I've been visiting Barefoot Coffee Roasters for a couple years now and as previous reviewers pointed out, service is really hit or miss (not really deserving tips). I mainly come here for the food, they got great breakfast sandwiches and bagels. It gets VERY busy on the weekends and since many people occupy tables with their laptops, finding an open table can be challenging. On my last visit i ordered a quiche and it wasn't heated properly so ill stick to sandwiches.
google avatar

Danny R.

Yelp
Fun little spot to grab a coffee and walk to the dog beach. Fast service with nice outdoor seating
google avatar

Yelp
My kids made a stop and got food and drinks, they agreed that it was excellent. The Cardiff crack tacos and avocado toast with eggs are great.

Yelp
A Hidden Gem on Cedros - Barefoot Coffee Roasters is a Must-Visit! I stumbled upon Barefoot Coffee Roasters while exploring Cedros Avenue and I'm so glad I did. This place is a total vibe -- warm, inviting, and effortlessly cool. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and you can tell they're genuinely passionate about coffee. Casey made an incredible vanilla latte with their house made vanilla. We decided to order another because it was so good. The staff took the time to talk to us and even let us try their house made vanilla cream foam.

Yelp
Located on Cedros in Solana Beach. Ample seating outside and inside and has a great menu for food selections. Coffee is delicious and staff is welcoming!

Pillihp G.

Yelp
Mexican coffee tasted like low sugar chocolate milk. Food took forever. Never got our smoothie after 30min. Overpriced place with staff that just likes to chit chat
google avatar

Emily L.

Yelp
Solid spot with great all around options and ambiance. Everything from drinks to food was top notch. It was clean and there was great service.

Corley M.

Yelp
DELICIOUS coffee. Friendly baristas. Loved the ambiance. Went for the Cuban coffee and I WILL BE BACK

Yelp
I come in for my chai before work occasionally and it's my favorite spot. Kudos to Lynz for always being super sweet and making the visit worth while.
google avatar

Brandon N.

Yelp
Very busy little place but the coffee was great and baristas were very friendly. Even though they were very busy they moved quickly which was nice since we were in a hurry
google avatar

Alicia K.

Yelp
Service is terrible and their drinks are subpar to say the least. The short blonde guy that works there got his panties in a bunch because I asked him to add more sweetener to my latte. Umm excuse me I just paid $25 dollars for a watered down latte and a sandwich? Leave the attitude at home. Would never give my money to this business again!! This ain't Starbucks, the service NEEDS to be better.
google avatar

Joseph B.

Yelp
We had the Avocado Toast and almond croissant, not bad. Also, decent menu for a coffee shop, coffee was solid not as good as other local coffee shops. Good place to sit outside, the outdoor seating could be more organized.

Mark K.

Yelp
Lukewarm coffee served in a dented paper cup. Quality of coffee good but difficult to completely evaluate because of its temperature. Should've asked for a hot coffee, but I'm trying not to be "that guy." Very crowded with working folks sitting in front of computer screens.
google avatar

Bea P.

Yelp
This place is a cute coffee shop with indoor and out seating. The offer cafe food and coffee as well as other beverages. I got the voodoo espresso and it tasted good. I also got a sandwich but didn't remember to snap a pic. The ambiance is nice and it gets quite busy and packed. It's a good coffee shop to visit if you're in the area.
google avatar

Kriya S.

Yelp
decided to go here in order to get some work done, and it was a really good spot! plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, so we were easily able to find a seat. also have outlets and wifi which is a huge plus! i got an iced chai, and my friend got an iced caramel latte. iced chai - 5/5 tasted exactly how it should, a solid chai! i'd definitely get again. caramel latte - 3/5 it was ok! needed more caramel but if ur not into sweet drinks, you might like it! overall, i really liked the vibe of this cafe and would definitely recommend if you want a good spot to get some work done! -1 star solely because I found the chairs a little uncomfortable for my back. would definitely come here again, and would want to try some of the food since they have a lot of options!
google avatar

Avery B.

Yelp
This place was decent. The ambiance was very pleasant, giving good vibes from their wooden board menus and unique flavor combos. The servers were polite and sweet, but the food was just okay. I ordered a bagel with cream cheese which was $5 (???) and it took a while to come out. coffee here is good, my friends enjoyed their coffee and the aesthetic is really nice but not sure id place this high up on my list.
google avatar

Mick G.

Yelp
This place is great. I host a group run that drops in here once in a while and they have a tremendous ability to work with us! The coffee is delicious, as are the menu items! Bonus: beer on tap? Yay! Classic euro style cafe! Great place for some mid-week remote work too
google avatar

Su L.

Yelp
I came here for coffee this morning after finishing a workout class nearby. My husband and I were on a work trip and he had previously been to Barefoot and liked the coffee so I thought I'd give it a try. I ordered a flat white with almond milk and the coffee was unbelievably bad. It tasted as if they had dumped milk in a cup of drip coffee. The coffee was also full of bubbles. I had to throw out the coffee after taking one sip. Will not be back and will not recommend.

Seth B.

Yelp
The coffee quality is just not great. Matcha has barely any matcha (mostly iced milk). I feel like the draw here is confusing. Either people are coming for the hype or just out of convenience and where it's located on the street.
google avatar

Bob D.

Yelp
What a cool little find! Quaint little coffee shop with warm vibes! Plenty of seating both indoors and out. Friendly accommodating staff. Good food and good coffee!!
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
I come here all the time and get work done. Great coffee shop. Plenty of seating. Strong espresso. 3 hour parking on the street. Solid spot. Worth hitting to get work done or have a coffee with a friend.
google avatar

Sara S.

Yelp
Good coffee Good location Limited seating because its always busy I dont think the staff is particular great in any way but the drinks are good. I tried a few of their special drinks but i prefer the good old late!

Gabrielle C.

Yelp
My coworkers and I went on our lunch break and the staff was super nice! Marty did a great job at answering all our questions about the menu/ food :)
google avatar

Ronalyn R.

Yelp
Favorite coffee spot in San Diego! Coffee & price point is perfect. Lots of seating areas. Never tried their food but it looks good. Service is good overall. Good WiFi and overall great customer base. I love coming here to get work done.
google avatar

Smitha A.

Yelp
I'll start with the bad. So super $$$$$! I got a Vanillatte and a gluten free avocado toast with Turkey bacon. I spent $21 including tax and tip. Holy bonkers that pricey and the only reason this place didn't get a 5 star review. The latte was delicious and the oat milk was the perfect creamy touch. The avocado toast was also perfect with good quality gf bread (a little soggy in the middle) with cherry tomatoes, sprouts and pumpkin seeds. The Turkey bacon was the perfect topper. But it's a perfect place for an occasional treat. Not a daily indulgence. They have a ton of gf options which I live. Next time I go back, I'm getting an $18 beanie. It's super cute!

James B.

Yelp
Kinda crazy and never experienced such lackluster service. The person making my coffee stopped halfway through and left it sitting out then left outside to do something then came back playing on his phone and then finally finished off the drink. Coffee shop is nice but man I've never seen anything like this
google avatar

Ashley D.

Yelp
Great study spot tucked away into Solana Beach's famous street, Cedros. This place is relatively crowded on weekends but a good spot to get work done on weekdays. They have an interesting menu with specialty drinks and various food options. I've never tried the food but have tried their Cortado and Lattes. Both are good. I would avoid the matcha since it tasted watery and not well mixed when I had it.
google avatar

Anne F.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite coffee shops to visit on days when the remote office in my home just isn't cutting it. The coffee is great, and there is enough seating where I don't feel rushed (on a weekday). I usually get one of their flavored lattes. They have all been delicious and I look forward to working my way through the menu. It's an enter and order at the counter situation. They have menus on the wall when you enter which I love so I don't have to squint and try to read the menu behind the counter. Most of the seating is for 2 or 4 people. I think all the 2 person tables is why it's easier to get a seat here. The Wifi has been great. Weekday mornings it's peaceful with most people working solo. If you're planning on working remember coffee shop etiquette and be mindful if it looks like the shop is starting to get busier. It's in a great location- as many people should be able to visit and support this great local business as possible!
google avatar

Deanne L.

Yelp
Great place to grab a coffee and/or light bite, if you can find a table, that is! Popular spot in the Cedros District with plenty of outdoor seating and a few indoor. We were lucky enough to grab a table after ordering. I'm not a coffee drinker honestly, but happy I found something I really enjoyed. Lavender Matcha Latte was perfect. The lavender and matcha worked very well together and the lavender flavor wasn't overly strong or "perfume"-y as I call it. Over $6.50 for mine and $3 for my friend's Americano. I want to come back to try some food, like their toasts Like I mentioned, it's a quite popular spot around 10am on a Saturday. We waited in line for about 10 min but thankful we got a spot right away. The space is nice and open and perfect to catch up with a friend
google avatar

Clara W.

Yelp
I've been coming here regularly for the last 2 years. It used to be my favorite coffee shop because of the delicious coffee /specialty drinks, service, and mouth-wateringly good pastries. They're also dog-friendly and sometime have treats on hand. The last few times I've been, however, i like the service from the newer baristas haven't been great. They got my food order wrong and instead of apologizing, was defensive. Another recent time i ordered a gingerbread latte and it lasted like just syrup and lukewarm milk. Still one of my fav places for just basic coffee and beans, for enjoying a drink with friends, and ordering a pastry.
google avatar

Justin D.

Yelp
This place has such a cool vibe and taste! My cousins and girlfriend all tried different things and enjoyed them. I love the unique flavors and the atmosphere of this place. The service was friendly and offered to remake any of the drinks if we didn't like them. I definitely appreciated the kind service and the coffee was made with some finesse and definitely pushed some boundaries. Hope to come back soon!

Addison C.

Yelp
inefficient gooners. definitely orders of benson boones crumbl cookie. like the kinda people to put it in resin on their shelves. interesting.

Yelp
The absolute BEST lavender latte, hot or cold! A must try, you will keep going g back.

Mackenzie W.

Yelp
Cute little spot with a friendly staff and decently priced. I had a cappuccino that was good and would definitely stop in again for a coffee.
