"The original Barlata was still in its nascent stages when Olivella first visited Austin six years ago. Along with running B44, the upscale Spanish eatery he opened in San Francisco in 1999, and overseeing the new restaurant’s development, he was teaching Catalan cooking around the country. Central Market signed him on for a Texas tour that stopped in Austin. Two years later, he and Jerez moved to Austin from San Francisco with their two children, Lola, 8, and Talize, 13. (They now have a thirteen-month-old son, Gael). “The beautiful part of this project is that this is the first restaurant Vanessa and I have been able to create together. She was the main driving force behind this,” says Olivella, praising her business acumen and faith in the location on the ground floor of a sleek new South Austin condominium. The duo shares an endearing tendency to credit their spouse for the restaurant’s success. However, they are both there – Olivella in the kitchen, Jerez on the floor – six to seven nights a week. Barlata’s menu, which is similar to the restaurant’s Bay Area counterpart, offers more than 40 kinds of tapas. However, one thing you won’t find anywhere but here is the Roasted Angus Beef Brisket Canalones, Olivella and Jerez’ original tribute to Austin. ***All reservations larger than 10 must be made via phone."

Love this place! I go for the patatas bravas but always like trying new things. My faves from today were the croquetas and ceviche, droool. Oh and the Catalan toast dipped in the leftover sauce from the potatoes was so good, haha. Okay, one mooore, the costillas (sweet and sour pork ribs) were pretty bomb and I'm not even that big on meat. I'm doing sober August but can't wait to go back to try some of their new cocktails. Pear Mojito sounds amaze.

3.5 stars I came during happy hour so the prices were better, especially for me who was trying multiple dishes. The croquettes and the lamb empanadas were really tasty and flavorful as well as the steak. I really did not like the paella, it was definitely undercooked. Some of the grains of rice was rock hard and there was zero crust that you would expect from a paella. Also the sangria was too sweet and after I let the ice melt, it became too watery. The server did ask me if I wanted to exchange it for something else which was nice but by the time she noticed I hadn’t drank it, I was already getting up to leave.

My husband and I went for dinner and were looking forward to it as we have always wanted to try it out. We didn't have reservations so we had the option of sitting in the bar or waiting out 1 hour so we decided to sit at the bar which wasn't too bad. We ordered a couple of things between us: 1. Fried Calamari- this was good and you get the freshness of the seafood 2. Paella seafood- the taste was a little off and we were wondering if it's coming from the pan. I love paella especially what my husband makes so I think I am probably very picky when it comes to paella so this dish was definitely not my favorite. 3. Grilled Moroccan Lamb - this was truly amazing. This was the best for me. I'll go back just to eat this again. Service was pretty okay considering how busy they were. They were still attentive. The atmosphere itself was nice and while it was a little noisy, we were still able to have a conversation.

Can not give this mom and pop restaurant enough stars. Wheelchair accessible. Very clean. Friendly servers and the chef was amazing and came out for a photo. Included 15 pictures. The food is out of this world. Paella with jumbo shrimps is a must, meatballs were finger licking good but the best for this foodie was the blood sausages. It's a must. Thank you Barlata, you are amazingly brilliant. We thank you Chef Daniel.

Definitely a unique experience and worth a try. Went with friends to try it out. We had reservations as recommended and were seated upon arrival. Our server was awesome, she took the time to explain the entire process to us as this was our first time here. We ordered and the food started coming out very quickly. Food was well prepared and was mostly very tasty. the Wagyu meat balls were GREAT, our favorite. The worse were the mussels as many were crunchy with what I assume is sand? the other negative was it was quite dark in the restaurant, to the point I had to use the flashlight on my phone to see the menu. At first I thought my eyes were just bad then I looked around and saw several others doing the same thing. When we were finished, the lights were finally turned up! Even though it was on the expensive side, it was worth a visit to experience this style of dining.

We came here for Valentine’s Day and it was packed. We were seated at a small dark table outside on the patio and, given that it was chilly out, we requested to move to a table by a heater which they accommodated. We ordered drinks and then waited an hour before they were brought to the table. At this time we also ordered food. They had a set Valentines menu which included 4 dishes & 4 wine pairings for $75 which we thought was a great deal. My girlfriend decided to do that and because many of the items included dairy (which I can’t have) I decided to pick several tapas plates off the main menu. The Valentine’s Day menu included charcuterie, a seafood plate (scallops, prawns, clams), steak & shrimp and then dessert. I had the Shishito peppers, ahi tuna tartar, octopus, mussels, duck and paella Barceloneta. Unlike the drinks, the food came quickly and basically all at once. The food was excellent. I would highly recommend the Spanish octopus, the tuna tartar and the mussels. We had ordered quite a lot for two people and spent some time getting through each dish. I finished my cocktail and my girlfriend finished her two glasses of wine but the server was nowhere to be seen. Another 30 minutes passed before we were able to order more drinks. At this point we had finished all the food and the diligent bussers had removed all plates. As it got colder we sat outside on the patio waiting for drinks and dessert. We waited another 30 minutes before one glass of wine for me and four (?) glasses of wine arrived for my girlfriend. We finally decided to come inside to warm up. The dessert had still not arrived at this point and we had been at dinner for over two hours. Finally it came and we finished dessert before settling up the $200 bill and leaving as soon as possible. While the food was fantastic the service was exceptionally bad and therefore I would not recommend this restaurant. I understand that this was a very busy day but the service was so bad that we contemplated leaving mid-meal several times. The three stars are 100% for the food.

I can give it a 5 on the ambience and environment and service as well but the quality of the food needs a little more work. I would describe the food as average. This is definitely not a traditional Tapas place if you are expecting it to be. It is more of a hybrid or fusion tapas place with a Texas twist. The portion sizes are small obviously, so make sure to order multiple ones. The drinks are good as the service is really good. Weekdays aren't busy but for weekends I would suggest reserving in advance. I used OpenTable. The kobe was a little different than what I was expecting so I'm not sure how to describe it. The salmon was great though, it's a must try. Wine is half price on Tuesdays and parking is available on site. Parking is limited to 3 hrs though.
