"Skip the long wait for pre-cooked cheeseburgers at the overhyped place down the road and maximize your beach time with a box of broasted chicken from the area’s best grocery store. Barney’s has been supplying both locals and visitors with everything they need for their cook outs but they also make some addictive broasted chicken found in the deli section. It’s the perfect snack to bring to the beach and it’s popularity means there’s always some being fried up. Don’t miss the sensational ‘Pure Michigan’ craft beer selection from here if that’s your thing." - Naomi Waxman, Titus Ruscitti

This place has so much! Liquor section is huge and just has their spinach pasta salad which was really good. Took a premade sandwich to go. They even offered to heat it up, which was really nice!

Google
Very nice grocery store, I’m not familiar with the area was only passing through but have to say it’s one of the nicest general/grocery stores I’ve ever seen. They also gave a huge selection of alcohol, honestly more variety then most liquor stores; also have a section of Michigan wine. If your in the area I highly recommend stopping by for any necessities you may need. Hope this helps

Google
The store has a wide variety and good selection of fresh produce as well as shelf items. I loved that the end caps of a couple of lanes had items that were local and Michigan made. They also had a great selection of premade foods. If you’re in need of something while in town, I highly recommend stopping here to get it.

Google
Barney's is my favorite Grocery store. Everyone there is friendly and goes out of their way to make your shopping experience easy. They hire the handicapped which is really a way to help them become part of our society. Thank You Barney's for always having affordable prices and friendly employees.

Google
Pooped in for a late lunch while out of town. So glad we did! The service is perfect!! The food was a treat!!

Danny Blast

Google
Good for food. But there was no man sized purple dinosaur forcibly hugging everyone in sight. For this, I am deducting 1 star.

Google
First off I'm so glad they have local groceries stores still around in smaller towns providing customer's with everything they need along with exceptional service. There was a Manager named Isaac then went out of his way to help us find what we need and you could see that he cared about every detail in the store amd was very friendly. Got some hot fresh tasty fried chicken at a fair price and they carried speciality items that you normally wouldn't see in large chain stores. The liquor dept attached carried a wide variety for everyone. Wish they had more stores and people like this around everywhere!

Google
I love this store. Very nice staff, fresh food, deli, fresh produce and meats. I’m rving, at a campground so right now it’s convenient. Love, love, love! And they have an old phone booth in front. Now that’s awesome!

Yelp
Much better than any small town grocery needs to be with prices that are reasonable for a tourist town. Great selection of wine and deli goods. Human cashiers who are pleasant without scripted idiotic statements. The tiny parking lot is not a place to trust that an antique Audi I just had repainted won't get a door ding. All the other customers were my age.

Jill l.

Yelp
The owner of this place is a crook and takes advantage of being the only grocery store in town. The items are 3-4x the cost they are at any other grocery store. We make a purposeful effort to avoid giving them our money. It is incredibly dishonest and just slimy. Get your food before you come into town. I am waiting for the day that someone opens another grocery store in town and puts this thief out of business.

Gary H.

Yelp
Good selection for most tastes; great pleasant staff, too. Parking is a bit of a mess, and vacationing visitors are sometimes unpleasant. This institution serves hordes of people throughout the summer. It's best to come early in the day.

Jim B.

Yelp
I ordered a dash and dine turkey sub sandwich for $9.99 thinking for that price I was getting a good sub. I would like to say it was not worth making. save your money and go to subway terrible

John H.

Yelp
The presence of a prime grocery is dependent upon enough traffic to make it financially feasible. Barney's lies near such a nexus, a short car ride from the first I-94 exit in southwestern lower Michigan, close to a bustling pleasure boat harbor, and along the Red Arrow Highway, artery to resorts and vacation properties galore. The north entry to Barney's is where you'll find most of the parking. It looks like a typical old grocery store, but inside you'll find many varieties of deliciousness. For Therese H., there's a pretty good gluten-free selection. And for most vacationers, you'll enjoy the fact that the south portion of the store is where you'll find the alcohol, with a fine selection of beer, wine, and liquor. You also can enter this part by the south entry off the sidewalk. By early July, Covid-19 didn't seem to be slowing down operations too much during our visit. Staff wore masks. Thanks, Barney's, during a couple different summer stays, we have enjoyed shopping here.

Yelp
Great meat department Good produce Expensive, pay for "resort" area convenience Good attached liquor store with local offerings and more Go elsewhere for Staples but a great asset for this area

Bill B.

Yelp
Small town market. You will not be disappointed Smaller than the jewel size markets. This means that there will be a slightly smaller selection than you might be used to. This for us was not a problem. Nice deli selection Great fresh meats selection. Great alcohol selection. This was a surprise coming from Pennsylvania as we have very limited availability in grocery stores and definitely zero hard alcohol. I wish the produce selection was a little better but overall a great market

Yelp
When we are travelling, we love to check out local grocery stores to see what beers they have and other fun grocery items that may be different than our usual circuit. Well, this place for sure has the beer and wine! I loved that it's a two part store- a beer/wine section with a ramp into the regular grocery area. It allowed for a big inventory of grocery and booze. Win-win! They sell a lot of individual bottoms to do a make-your-own 6 pack, which we ended up doing. The only downers to this is there's no discount for buying 6, AND there's that Michigan 10 cent bottle deposit. The bottles are all individually priced so this does not sell at a set rate. I was impressed with the grocery side, complete with a butcher area, frozen section, craft soda, etc. etc. I perused here quickly but everything looked great. It's nice too that you can shop in the grocery side but check out on the beer side (not sure if that rule is reversible). This place is definitely worth a stop in, especially for wine and beer!

Yelp
Incredible selection of quality, well, everything! For those staying in the New Buffalo southern west side of Michigan, this store does not disappoint. A bit pricey, and, I can't compare prices in this area (because I'm new and just got here). I figured it was a Fresh Market upscale and in a tourist area kinda thing. Ya get what you pay for. Will definitely shop here anytime I return.

Joe G.

Yelp
I've been coming here on and off for 17 years--and really like this place. It's not perfect, but on the whole the staff are pretty good, and considering they have to deal with some of Chicago's superior attitudes, quite restrained. I also like how they hire people with developmental disabilities--something you don't see often enough. The steaks are great--also the Amish chicken--. And the prices are not so bad as many say--considering the quality of what you are getting. I'll take Barneys over Whole Foods any day.

Rachel C.

Yelp
Barneys has a great selection for such a quaint store. There produce, meat and deli sections are great. Funny even though it seems like a smaller store I can always find my favorite tea here even when it's hot or miss at home (so I stock up here). The cashiers are super quick and very courteous.

Robert W.

Yelp
i went there yesterday to return cans and bottles. The person taking them acted like i was trying to rob the place. She examined about 20 of 30, seeming eager to find one that wasn't redeemable. She didn't. Then she told me that next time i had to rinse them. Then handed me the box i brought them in like it was a dead rat. i have shopped there for years and always treat the staff with kindness and respect. She knew me. Three bucks means nothing to me. i just don't like throwing money away. i understand they have people who gather cans and deposits to eat, but i don't act or look like one of them. A little basic respect is in order.

Yelp
Love this place!! Wish we could bring it home with us! So much variety in every department! The condiment isle was the bomb! Make sure you visit the bakery and their amazing butcher counter! The brats and bacon we bought made up some of our favorite meals. In fact, my family said next time we visit New Buffalo they'd rather we buy from the butcher counter and just cook at home because it was so good. Don't miss out on their huge liquor department. So much to look from beer to whiskey, to Michigan wines. The lines move slow here so you must be patient but we didn't mind because their products were top notch. Come build a store in our neighborhood, please!

Leah R.

Yelp
For the only grocery in the downtown area, Barneys is great. Does it have all your favorites... probably not, but it comes close with great alternatives. Is it the cheapest, nope. There are cheaper alternatives closer to the highway. But in a pinch Barneys is great. I'm super picky about veggies / fruit and Barneys always has a decent selection. Is it grade A, probably not. But I only need the veggies & fruit to stay for at least 4 days. So far so good. They also have a good gluten free selection for my honey.

Pam M.

Yelp
There was 2 people shopping at Barney's not wearing a mask although it says wear a mask on the door but its not enforced. if you cant enforce a mandate I cant shop there.

Daina B.

Yelp
Barneys is a great grocery store for the vacation towns around it. Conveniently located right off Red Arrowhead Highway with plenty of parking. The store is a little crammed, but it has pretty much anything you would need for a getaway to Berrien County, including bundles of firewood. We stocked up with groceries and lots of beer here the first day we arrived. Their beer section is pretty large and you can buy individual bottles if you like rather than a whole sixer. The meat counter sucked us in and we impulsed bought three delicious kebobs which we grilled later that evening. As mentioned before, it can get a bit crowded in here so come early or come prepared to throw some 'bows. just kidding, just come mentally prepared to deal with crowds in tight spaces.

Yelp
Great beer selection, friendly staff... have driven to there from chicago to stock up on hard to find Michigan brews

J P P.

Yelp
An excellent market in a tourist town. I have a penchant for independent small town grocery markets....family owned and service orientated. A local grocery market can tell a tale of a neighborhood like no other. Not too many places you can order "Kick Ass" compression fried chicken served in sealed foiled bags... moist, tender and seasoned to perfection. Then, taste test while you shop the beer and wine cooler! "Miss Manners" would not approve the etiquette! Extra napkins please. The butcher counter offers pre cooked 12-16 oz. portions of medium rare perfectly seasoned slices of Prime Rib. For those of us who opt for a single slice "for you and me", and prefer not to buy a 5-6 pound roast and drive our cholesterol levels to extinction, this is a superior option! We were impressed with the options here. Too bad it's 100 miles from my front door. 5 stars for the Market 4 stars overall for the cattle prod checkout process. Some patrons view this as "Stand my Ground" while the checkout process exceeds your actual shopping time. I like this place but timing is everything. Tell me something new!

Yelp
Two years later, they are still catering to that Chicago yuppie, although they should really have some knowledgeable staffers on the floor instead of the pre-renovation oldies but goodies. We love loyal employees, however let's try to be helpful. When I asked someone who was unloading wine onto the racks, "can I ask you a question about the wines", he abruptly said "I don't know anything about them." Without an offer to find someone, I bravely selected my own and made a mental note to bring my cheat sheet next time. They have expanded their parking lot to accommodate all the traffic, but it remains a snarl on Saturdays about 3pm. Shop early!

Barry O.

Yelp
The service staff here just bum rushed my 3 yr old daughter and I out the door and refused to sell me a half gallon of lactose milk that I need to put her to sleep claiming they close at 8. It's a Monday and there were still people checking out so I said cmon I only need milk. Their security screamed "sir we are closed" and I looked at my phone and then held it up for him to see the time read 7:54. Again he screamed we're closed and approached me aggressively. I'm sure he was threatened by my 3year old daughter. Most of my stay in New Buffalo has been great but this was unprofessional and ridiculous. I understand this is a tourist town but that business hasn't started back up yet so you would think they would accommodate I'm shaking still that this poor excuse for a man would come at my child and I in such a manor. Despicable Barney's, despicable!!!!!!!!

Jessica B.

Yelp
Great place! A NICE amount of vegetarian and vegan products is a HUGE PLUS in my book!! Super clean, the cashiers are constantly wiping down the conveyor belts at the registers and everything is nicely organized. The layout is a bit awkward and it can become congested during the busy seasons but other than that I was extremely happy with the craft beer and food selections.

Rose T.

Yelp
Really good market with nice produce and good meat selection when stocked. Pretty good alcohol selection and nice other specialty items like cheeses, dips, and snacks. Not sure if there is another store like it in the area. Reasonable prices

Lefai K.

Yelp
This place kind of reminds me of Mariano's -- maybe it was the white shirt blue tie/pants theme or the friendly service, or maybe I just missed being away from Illinois for a few days In either case, place saved us driving 20-minutes to the closest Walmart.

Joy E.

Yelp
Perfect little vacation town store! All the essentials, plus fancy pieces for special occasions.

Benny V.

Yelp
Helpful staff, everything you need, slightly pricy (likely related to the locale and the clientele, and the lack-of-chain-ness) but very high quality products. The fresh veggies were superb.

B W.

Yelp
My son claims this is the best grocery store in the world. That probably had something to do with us going there while on vacation and therefor being more willing to say yes to treats. But regardless, this is a great market. Good deli and produce, good wine and beer, reasonable prices, and the people who work there are top notch. I particularly like the women at the registers. So friendly.

Carolyn E.

Yelp
I know I'm a tourist in a tourist town but holy goodness were some of the prices steep. (and this is coming from the lady who lives in Chicago and is used to Whole Foods prices) The market itself had everything we needed for our weekend and it is clean and cute!

Ben H.

Yelp
Best grocery store in the area. They carry a lot of craft beers. Good wine and great thick cut steaks. Lots of cheeses. Sometimes they are out of brie but I still love this place. No need to pack food from Chicago on the way up. They have everything you would need. Good people too. Easy parking.

Kat H.

Yelp
I love the healthy products. They have an excellent selection of good healthy organic products including gluten free. In fact they have a better selection than Nature's Cupboard (health food store in Michigan City).

ALFREDO M.

Yelp
I can't believe we were caught off guard, but while we were visiting my cousin in LaPorte we realized we only had like 12 beers for a house full of people on a Sunday afternoon and there are seemingly no liquor stores open on Sundays in Indiana for some reason. Our only option was to drive 30 minutes to New Buffalo if we wanted to get our drink on - and we certainly did want to do that. I don't know who Barney is (or was) but I imagine he was a guy who liked very cold beer because Barney's Market gets that beer as close to absolute zero as humanly possible - it is almost impossibly cold; magnificently frigid. Two twelvers of Coronas set us back like $35 but it's almost like they were doing us a favor by being open on a Sunday afternoon.

Dax R.

Yelp
This is our go to market in Union Pier, MI. They have a good beer selection and decent wine selection.

Rachel S.

Yelp
Surprisingly good grocery store for such a small town. They have a lot of gourmet items and also gluten-free items. Some very unusual foods, too. The place was crawling with yuppies. It was a bit crowded, but a great find.

Val W.

Yelp
Great little gourmet style market, all your essentials, nice range of beer choices and specialty items!

Mike W.

Yelp
Eh, if you're from Chicago or Chicago suburbs, odds are you're used to competition when it comes to grocery shopping. Marianos, whole foods, trader joes, and jewel. Well, as a territory of going somewhere that is a tourist trap, you should expect this place to be your only source of grocery shopping. And because of this, there's no real incentive for that one grocer to give you the best of the best service/products.... Anyways, this place is small, sort of old. Service was quick but average in terms of 'quality'. The workers (the few i saw) seemed like they hated their jobs and didn't want to be there. Maybe it was the day I was there, but it looked like there was hardly any food on many shelves. The produce and deli looked fresh, and their fruits tasted fresh as well. Prices are VERY high. I'm talking whole foods high. Again, you're at a tourist trap of a grocery store, this is your only option nearby. Expect it. I wouldn't pay for these prices year round. So, ultimately this place is an average, if not below average grocery store. There really isn't reason for them to lower prices, make service better, or make theme selves better because they are the only mAjor grocer around. So if you don't mind paying for some food at a pretty high price just a few times a year, this place is ok.

Nomad M.

Yelp
They raise their prices on the weekends when visitors come into town, the employees really do not want to be there and ask you to step out of the way when they are stocking items, and they ship all of the food that is going out of date from their sister grocery stores in Michigan city to this store to get rid of it to people that have no other choice but to shop here on the weekends. Multiple complaints filed on their survey that comes on the grocery receipt and nothing is done. They do not care and it shows in the poor employees attitudes which is passed down from management. Stock up before you get to town or stop in st joe or Michigan city before you get to town and save yourself a lot of trouble and aggravation.

Mary Ann C.

Yelp
This is a great market in downtown New Buffalo with lots of great options for fresh meats, produce, and lots of beer. You can really find anything you need or want on our vacation here.

A D.

Yelp
Great selection of everything! Tops are the beer selection and the dang fried chicken! I don't know what they put in that batter but that's the best chicken me or my kids ever had! It's always the first to go at a BBQ picnic too so pick some up and you'll be the most popular person at the party! Nice cheese selections and wines. The meat is fresh & tender. Get some steaks for a special occasion - they're a bit pricey but worth it in taste!

Michael M.

Yelp
Barney's had a nicer selection of foods and other merchandise than can be found in most "vacation" towns. Prices were a bit high on some items, but everything was top quality. I would shop there again. The fried chicken was wonderful!

Tyler M.

Yelp
A little pricey, but not many choices nearby. For the size of the store, there is a quite a bit of selection, which was nice.

Mary B.

Yelp
Was surprise to arrive this season and find an expanded store. As some other reviews note, it can be on the pricey side. If you want to make the trek there is big box grocery shopping outside the area. I usually bring a lot with me from home but enjoy Barneys as my go to when in town. I don't go there for the local produce, particularly fruits as there are much better alternatives...less pricey, but locally, salad greens and herbs are more plentiful here than local alternatives. EG I like kale and larger variety of greens. It's certainly expanded over the years. I found the staff welcoming, friendly and helpful although I did overhear a staff member briefly complaining to a co-worker about inventory location issues. There may not have been many of us in the store but didn't need to hear it. Another time a staff member made me feel foolish for looking for fresh shrimp but ended up being fairly helpful. Meats have been good. The new section for wine, beer...much expanded. Seems to have a nice variety.

Manon O.

Yelp
Wide variety of food including organics

Nhi C.

Yelp
Good selection. Need to train the staff to be more welcoming to customers (all ethnic race) The basics "hi" and "thank you" should be mandatory!!!

Filomena A.

Yelp
I loved this store. Everyone is so helpful and pleasant. I don't know where to begin!n -Meats, produce, deli ,grocery everyone is always willng to go the extra mile to help me find something. I do most of my shopping at Barney's and a local produce market in my neighborhood in Chicago. Do not like Jewel, dominicks, Walmart etc. Diane, compliment you and your staff for the wonderful service
