The Best Butcher Shops in San Francisco | Eater SF

"Barons took over from Drewes Brothers, so fortunately, Church Street still has an old-fashioned butcher shop with a full case. The big prime rib roasts chilling in the back are a sight to behold, and made our holiday gift guide, and everyday shoppers also appreciate the chicken, salmon, steaks, and chops. The shop’s original location is also still open in Alameda." - Becky Duffett

The 2019 Eater SF Holiday Gift Guide - Eater SF

"What carnivore in your life wouldn’t appreciate receiving a 30- to 35-pound beef rib as a gift? But the signature holiday offering at Barons Meats, which has a location in Alameda and another in Noe Valley, isn’t just a big hunk of meat; it’s also a service and a storage space rental: Call to reserve the cut known as the “107 Rib” and the butcher shop will dry age the meat over a period of several weeks and store it for your lucky gift recipient until they’re ready to come pick it up — either one funky, gloriously beefy, custom-cut dry-aged rib eye steak at a time, or as a whole prime rib roast. At $14.99 a pound, you’ll wind up paying around $500 for one of these monsters, but it’s a statement gift. And that statement is: “Please invite me over for Christmas Eve dinner.”" - Becky Duffett

Google
Love this place. The meat and seafood is high quality, and they stock excellent beer, wine and liquor. Staff is friendly and very knowledgeable

Jennifer Granito

Google
Knowledgeable staff and great house marinades for pork, beef, and chicken. Mostly local sourced and all sustainable. They stock some nice stuff from Olympia provisions. They also carry a pretty decent selection of wine and whisky.

Google
They have done a 180 from months ago with customer service! They have a whole new team with a wealth of experience and all about helping! They helped me put together a perfect arrangement of items for a surf and turf dinner including wine pairings. Thank you guys and keep up the good work! Looking forward to next time!))

Google
Great meat but the guys here are thoroughly unpleasant every time you call or interact with them in the store. I haven't had a single ungrumpy experience in the five times I've visited. This is especially a problem because every other butcher in the city is typically ultra friendly.

Carlos Fuentes

Google
Nice guy that works here helped me jump start my motorcycle. Didn’t hesitate to help someone out. Thanks again boss!

Google
As a native New Yorker, I have quite high standards for delis and butcher shops. Even so, Barons had me impressed. It has such a warm and inviting atmosphere full of appealing aromas. The shelves are stocked with local products for meat lovers and vegans alike (I fall into the later category). Prices are somewhat high, but that is to be expected for a local business in the heart of San Francisco. Be aware however that they do not accept manufacturer coupons.

Google
This is our neighborhood butcher. That alone is very valuable. But they really earn their 5 stars every time. Barons took over from Drewes and saved this neighborhood institution. They invested a significant amount in upgrades and it shows. They are fastidious. Amazing selection of meats. They will also order things for you if they don’t carry it, do custom cuts. They make their own sausages, which are TASTY. Meats are locally sourced and sustainably raised/farmed. Yes, more expensive than Whole Foods but the quality, service, selection, and overall experience is worth it. Plus the fact that you are supporting small, local business by shopping here. I am surprised by some of the negative service reviews. I’ve been going here pretty much every week since they took over the space. Some of the butchers have been working there since they opened. Always pleasant , informed, efficient. Keep in mind they’re butchers! It’s not an effing upscale clothing boutique. Nobody is going to fawn all over you with fake smiles and inquiries about your day to assuage your fragile ego. But these butchers are the best. They also have a good selection of other essentials: milk, eggs, cheese, pasta, etc. Dope selection of wine, beer, and spirits.

Google
excellent meat, very helpful service and nice selection of cheeses, chips, etc. butchers are incredibly nice too, one of them even jumped my car 🙏🏽

Yelp
My friend got cuts of buvette steak here and threw them on a grill -- and they were unforgettable. The quality of the meat was A+ and as a guest, I felt like it was such a treat. One of those meals you have to ask the host for all their secrets. Sounds like sourcing quality meats from Barons is the key! Excited to check this out myself one day.

Yelp
Friendly staff, great ambiance, love the selection of beverages available as well. It's a bit expensive but high quality, so to be expected!

Yelp
Eh, my experience was sub-optimal. Showed up one morning for my first visit, didn't realize they open at noon. No prob! Went to run some other errands and come back. Arrived about ten before opening, still locked up of course. Other customers started collecting in front ahead of opening. Almost ten minutes past noon we could see the butchers inside doing their thing. Someone pulled on the door and they had unlocked it without a word or glance of acknowledgment to the six of us waiting. We all laughed and went in (except for the three customers who left in exasperation). The two butchers immediately pounced together to help the same attractive woman and disregard the rest of the customers despite her purchase being one small thing. She got the attentive service the rest of us were anticipating. The pot roast I'd come to shop for was not the best. There was just one and it was not at all fresh - in fact, it was pretty gray. We went to Whole Foods and got a really beautiful one for $3/pound less and saved over ten bucks! Between the quality and the staff, I won't bother them again.

Yelp
Barons really delivers quality It was my first time at this place and I'm so impressed! Their varieties and selections are awesome. They have many unique brands and they all seem quality! I wanted to check out each and every item because they are like a mini farmers market. They are so friendly too, definitely a gem in the neighborhood! Their prosciutto was on Point! The balance on fat and it doesn't have the frozen/porky taste that I often find at grocery store brands. I'll need to try more items from them!
google avatar

Chris T.

Yelp
These guys are A+. Seriously one of the best butcher shops in SF and the nicest guys around

Yelp
I love this shop. It is very high quality and I've always gotten excellent service. I recommend this shop!

Yelp
I used to love this place - high quality meat, clean, great service. It's in my neighborhood so it used to be my go to whenever I needed a steak. Went there yesterday and had such a horrible customer experience that I'm never going back. A thin guy with long gel'ed up hair and a goatee was there when I walked in. The doors were open but the lights were off. I asked if they were open, he said simply no, with a frown, without telling me when they would be open. I asked when they opened, he said 11. It was 10:50 so I was a bit early. No big deal, I came back 10 minutes later. I return at 11 and wait in line, someone else is already there. Someone else enters and enters the line behind me. The thin goateed guy then comes up and asks this new person what they want, ignoring me. The other person kindly tells him I was here and the thin goateed guy reluctantly, with a frown, turns to me. I tell him what I want and he sort of slaps the meat onto the paper, then wraps it very carelessly, not really folding the paper well just sort of crumpling it around the meat, and slaps labels on the paper. The label on one of the packets doesn't stick and the paper opens. He does nothing, he just moves it to the cashier counter. Meanwhile my daughter is complaining about the smell and has to go outside. The floor looks unclean as well. I notice that the store is a lot less clean than it used to be. As this thin goateed guy rings me up he tells the other employee to do some tasks. Is this guy the manager? I can't believe it. Some of the worst customer service I have ever experienced. He seems hung over or something, just tired and in a bad mood. If he is in fact the manager, no wonder the place smells and is dirty now. He clearly does not want to be there. Well, that makes two of us. I'll give my business to Golden Gate Meat Company in the Ferry Building or Guerra's in Sunset instead, they both have much better service, they don't smell, and the prices are the same. Whoever the owner of this store is, you probably should have a talk with this guy. He was there at 11am Saturday morning Feb 27.

Yelp
HOLY S%#+ The Black Dragon seasoning on the tri tip in their cooler is phenomenal. High quality seasoning too, you can tell because usually stuff from Trader Joe's or Cosco makes your stomach hurt but this was so delicious the neighbor asked what I was grilling through the fence! Seared both sides for 3 minutes then turned down the heat to 400 for 15 to cook. I will be back for some more! Also everything in this store is high quality at a decent (market) price. Even with inflation and what not. Thanks ya'll. You've got a new customer!

Yelp
Amazing quality meats! Never have been let down in terms of their selection and their vast amount of options but, when it comes to customer service, in my opinion, need to be a little bit more personable. I was a seafood monger in Menlo Park for an amazing family owned business called Cooks Seafood. If you want amazing customer service for a butchery, that should be what all butcheries aim for when it comes to being personable and quite Frank, learning to be a people person. Barons butchers are highly qualified on the meat side but lack the people skills department. Nonetheless, amazing meat. I guess now a days, no one believes in talking to people. The covid era of customer service is becoming an epidemic

Yelp
I had never gone to a butcher regularly until Barons opened up near me, and woah was I missing out. First, their selection and quality of meats are top notch. Anything I'm looking for, they have it and it cooks deliciously (they'll even give me tips on best way to do it). Similarly, their drink offerings are not only high quality, but extremely unique. You'll find brands of sake, whiskey, gin, etc. that you can't expect to find anywhere else. Beyond that, they're incredibly friendly and helpful. Each one of them is willing to take the time to help me find what I'm looking for, and will double check in the back if it's not on display. Additionally, as I mentioned above, they're always more than willing to answer any questions I may have about their offerings, whether it's meat or beverage. I know I'm in for a good experience each time I come in!

Yelp
I am waiting in line to get in. I appreciate they have senior hours from 11am- noon. I definitely appreciate it. But couple of things. I just saw someone 1/2 my age walk out. When i tried to walk in maybe i wasn't good looking enough to break the rules. I tried to walk in after she left and they all basically scolded me for trying to come in lol I definitely won't be coming back here. First and last time. Treat everyone the same. Perhaps the meat is good. I'm going to try it because i drove all the way from the peninsula but your employees need to treat everyone the same. Just because you're cute and young and female doesn't mean you should be able to shop here during hours specific for the seniors SENIOR HOURS ARE SENIOR HOURS sign didn't say "at risk hours". Nice way to try and make a come back. OH ALSO YOU ARE WELCOME. I just spent over $100 at your establishment and you come off without even a THANK YOU for trying my spot. We're sorry you felt this way. Yah. You definitely won't get any more of my coins.

Yelp
A welcome addition to the neighborhood after many years of having a butcher there, the cleanliness and attention to COVID protocols has made me a loyal customer. Being able to interact with the people who do the work is so much better than the grocery store experience.
google avatar

Paul F.

Yelp
I rarely post on Yelp but I was disturbed by some of the recent posts. I have had nothing but positive experiences at Baron's since when they first opened until now. They know their meats and have been uniformly excellent at helping me choose. And I've had some special orders that they've done perfectly. I just can't say enough about how great their meat is and how helpful the staff has been.

Yelp
My neighbourhood butcher! I love this shop. It has great selection of meat, wine/beer, pasta, and various other consumables. They are super in tune with the neighbourhood - even started carrying produce after Church Produce closed! They give the best advice, are super patient with my questions, super patient with my preschooler's questions (although he was super sad that they took down the drawing paper), and just seem like all around nice, competent folks who are really into what they do for a living. Drewe's (previous incarnation) was a much loved neighbourhood icon, but in my opinion Barons is superior in quality and selection. Tip: If your timing is really good, you can snag top quality salmon belly for $5/lb!
google avatar

June K.

Yelp
I wish I could give 5 star review.... I have been there a few times and they have quality meat. But last time i was there to order Korean style beef ribs, the butcher did a really bad job slicing the meat. They were all uneven and some of them were shredded badly. Too bad I only realized it until I got home.

Yelp
Stopped by on walk home from park w kiddos. Meat and seafood selection looked great! Got a cowboy steak and steelhead trout fillets. Both were fantastic grilled! Steak was very tender and flavorful. Steelhead trout fillets big hit w the kids!

Marianne C.

Yelp
Good meat selection and a couple great gluten free beers in stock. Perfect place to get ingredients for a special night at home. Happy they are still limiting the number of customers indoors, unlike other curmudgeons on Yelp.
google avatar

Jackie N.

Yelp
Baron's is amazing. Have to be honest here. Never knew this existed until I won a steak dinner. The ribeye's were by far the tenderest , juiciest steak I've ever had. Blows any other market away. If you want fresh, excellent quality meat skip the grocery stores (Whole Foods or the like) and come to Baron's. Promise you won't be disappointed.

SB S.

Yelp
This has nothing to do with covid... I live up the street and have been a regular customer since they took over from Drewes Meats. I have been regular because I like their quality of meat and seafood. But they have attitude. As in, they always act (regardless of covid) as though they are doing YOU the favor. I will stick my neck out to say that though we are encouraged to give concessions about service, etc because of covid, we are ALL going through it, we are all stressed, and we all need manners and thoughtfulness. And yes, they are serving us, but we are also their devoted customers who stand in line fir 15+ minutes to get into their shop. So please, could we all give each other a break and not act as though because we are answering your question, you are wasting your time?

Yelp
This place is awesome! I've been to every butcher in San Francisco and they all have their good and bad points everyplace does BUT finding this newly opened gem was a blessing. First off the way I found them was through Google. You know butchers near me... I knew what everyone had to offer already but Barons was new so I called. Matt answers the phone and assured me they had what I was looking for so I got footed it over. Bonus points for reminding me of my Grandfathers Grocery store butcher shop. Super old school looking complete with vintage display cases AND a meat railing system. I learned to cut meat down on one of those! The meat looked exquisite. I know everyone has good meat but the marbling on the Porterhouse, New York strip and Filet Mignon was absolutely amazing. The aged dry beef looked great too. Here's the problem. I don't know what to get the next time I drop by. I do know it will be super soon! PS best prices for marrow bones in SF shhhhhhh....,
google avatar

Zane W.

Yelp
The best people work here. Always happy to help and serve the best meat, fish, cheese, beer and wine in neighborhood. They just added new cooler cases that look amazing. 5 stars no doubt about it. Oh! And they have a reward points system too!

Chris S.

Yelp
The guys that work there are consistently rude and don't care at all about helping you. I've heard them talk trash on more than one occasion openly about customers in the store. It's unpleasant to be in there. They should do something that doesn't involve talking to or helping people.
google avatar

Moses L.

Yelp
The quality of the meat and selection is great. Of course it's more expensive than your Supermarket butcher section, but the quality you get is definitely worth it. The drawback is some of the butchers here are not really helpful. This is a shop you go to if you know exactly what you want. If you ask for some recommendations or help, the butchers aren't really engaging.
google avatar

Jeremy B.

Yelp
Sausages are best in the city. All of the beef is top notch. Smoked salmon and all of the fish filets are great.

Joel R.

Yelp
I have read the reviews for this place. The praise it recieves is well deserved. Anyone that recieves"poor service" should take a deep look at THEMSELVES. Ever hear the saying "You get what you give"? I've been in this store plenty of times and witnessed the staff being spoken to by customers like they were shit on their shoe. Cutting meat can't be a well paying job. These folks are there because they give a damn about what they do. If you can't be polite to people who are trying to help you, stay home. Or go to whole foods and see how the service is there. Matt and his team have always been great to my wife and I. We appreciate their knowledge and help and will always give our business to Baron's. We are truly grateful to have a business like this on our neighborhood, while so many like are forced to close during covid-19. Grow the F up.

Debbie F.

Yelp
Incredibly knowledgeable staff who are really friendly and helpful selecting cuts of meat. And the highest quality meat anywhere! I love this place!

Meg D.

Yelp
fabulous costumer service! Made our dinner party a hit with the wine amazing selections they carry! We will be back for sure!
google avatar

Thomas W.

Yelp
Great butcher shop. Fantastic selection and high quality meats. His in-house made sausages are out of this world. Try the Nuremberger and his Bratwurst. We also bought fish a couple of times, which was also excellent. And have I mentioned the great aged steaks!
google avatar

Sumbal A.

Yelp
I just moved to the neighborhood and found this butcher shop amazing. The quality of their steaks is phenomenal. I recently found out that they do dry age for you as well. So you just buy a big piece of meat (mine was $500) and they put it into the locker with your name on it to dry age it. You just have to call 1 hour earlier and they will cut the steak for you according to your desire. I love the quality and funky taste of dry aged steaks. Butchers are very knowledgeable and guide you very well. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Lily T.

Yelp
Super high quality meats, fish, and other deli / grocery products. So convenient and very friendly customer service
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Oh man. I've lived in the neighborhood for about 2.5 years -- and I was thrilled to see a neighborhood butcher (Drewe's) in this space when I moved in. I was sorely disappointed after trying them out. Low quality meat, poorly cut (thickness varying by 1/4" or more -- making it a bitch to do 4-6 steaks at a time for a small group), and overall a pretty poor selection. Stopped by Barons today to check out the new owners and their offerings. Took home a nice looking, well-marbled ribeye (not dry aged, just a nice, normal cut -- and the other ribeyes in the case were all cut to the same thickness). Just finished it. Burp. Excellent piece of meat. Folks behind the counter were congenial. Space is much improved. MUCH better selection of meats. Welcome to the neighborhood!
google avatar

Zk K.

Yelp
Better selection, cheaper prices, and higher quality than its predecessor. Still working out the kinks as it just opened but so far great replacement for Drewes...
google avatar

Julia M.

Yelp
The hubby and I stopped by Barons on our Sunday walk and left with a couple lamb sausage and chicken apply sausage links, among some specialty condiments and treats. The meat was EXCELLENT! Fresh taste, excellent quality and very flavorful. We will definitely be returning to try some more of Barons' amazing selection of items.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Yes. All Yes. says it right there in the name, "Quality." This spot knows how to treat guests as well as they treat the provisions. 10/10 would buy everything.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Thanks again guys; great meal with the Cowboy Ribeye. Always good selection and service. Several cuts are hard to get or find anywhere else but I have a few go to picks there (won't mention the lesser known cuts that are excellent)
google avatar

Sebastian R.

Yelp
Excellent quality meats and good selections. Very helpful and knowledgeable butchers. Generally expect to pay more than the grocery store of course, but you're paying for quality not inflated margins.
google avatar

B G.

Yelp
Came in for some bones for my Bull Dog Lunchbox. They cut them em up to a perfect size. I then picked out some fresh Garlic Sausage and to round out the visit a few Ribeye Steaks. I am pleased to have found this old school Butcher shop. I will be back for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
I was very excited to find a butcher close to home. I bought some beef bones, roast, and pork feet. The day I wanted to cook, it was to my horror to find the pork feet full of dirt and hair!!! I called them and their excuse is that they break down the pig there hence the dirt, as if the pig is so fresh that the dirt is still there as a souvenir. It was appalling to see such poor quality meats and service. I felt like the butchers only catered to their white customers and made me feel out of place. Will never return again!!!
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
We have tried the marinated pork loin, a few sausages, and leg of lamb. The marinated pork loin was fantastic! We BBQ'd the meat and had an amazing dinner and then delicious sandwiches through the week. The sausages are freshly made and delicious. Leg of lamb was similarly tasty. We have found the butchers (particularly Dave, the owner) to be both friendly and knowledgeable. Importantly, they have made a serious effort to clean the space, which shows. It's now to the cleanliness standard that a butcher's shop should be - Drewe's was, unfortunately, definitely not, particularly at the end of their tenure. While the cases need to be swapped out for new ones, in the meantime, they are functional and clean! Visit the store and see for yourself. This is night and day from what it used to be and is so much better. Definitely a welcome addition to the neighborhood.
google avatar

Jessica B.

Yelp
Our neighborhood favorite butcher. In the beginning the prices were very cheap, but they have gone up some. Still better than Whole Foods and a much neater selection. We like a lot of their marinated meats like the tri tip. They people there are very knowledgable too. Great vibe!!
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
My secret weapon for great dinner parties. I can rely on Baron's for the last minute meal for two or a feast for a group. Plus, the new display cases make it a great experience. Keep them busy this holiday season!

Jeff L.

Yelp
How does one get good service here? Like so many others, every time I have gone here, I have been treated with complete disdain. Even when I cheerily say "thank you, have a nice day!!" It's met with crickets and sour faces. I only go there as a last desperate resort, but after today, I won't go again. I'm amazed that others claim to have had great service, because I have never experienced anything more than hostility from the staff.

P L.

Yelp
A great little butcher shop with a varied and fantastic selection of meats and other essentials (cheese, pastas, vegetables, wine, etc). The staff is always extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable with any questions I may have for them (Matt always seems to be the one who helps me the most). I appreciate the measures, efforts and service the ownership and staff has put forth during the Covid-19 era. If you're looking for a great butcher shop and you live in Noe Valley or within a reasonable distance, give them a visit.
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
Outstanding butcher shop for the following reasons: 1 - high quality products at a reasonable price 2 - nice people 3 - great premarinated meat selection 4- decent seafood choices 5 - excellent condiments to complement the meats

Karen P.

Yelp
High quality products never got good service here. I always feel like they are doing us a favor and that they don't need my business... so they will not get it again.

Eric S.

Yelp
Barons continues to be the best butcher in SF. We've been going to them for years, and remain blown away by how they've handled business during the pandemic. The food is incredible (including the new offerings in the refrigerated section), their beer selection is outstanding (and always supports local breweries with a rotating inventory), and the service is fantastic (I always appreciate their recommendations on what cuts to buy and how to cook them). Not just a neighborhood gem -- a jewel of San Francisco. Thanks for everything, Barons!

Amy V.

Yelp
A nicer shop than their predecessor but service could improve. I went and bought some meat and chicken bones on Tuesday. On Thursday, the chicken bones stank when I removed it from the fridge to make soup. It had gone bad! I went back to the shop and bought more chicken bones. I told the employee what happened. He didn't even acknowledge it. He brought the packet of bones to the till and left as another customer was paying. It was my turn and I waited for a staff to ring my one purchase up. An employee showed up and served the customer who came after me (he was serving her earlier). The first employee told him that I had been waiting to pay. He then apologized but went ahead and served the other customer (who purchased a few items) while I waited to pay for ONE item. I was disappointed in their customer service and don't think I'll be back anytime soon

D C.

Yelp
Please post it prominently near the hours (or at all) on your website if you are going to be closed on a day like Easter. I went to your website to check the hours before planning my trip and was given no heads up. Just said that you would be open Sundays 12 - 6.

Yelp
When it was Drewes Meats, I worked for Josh and Isaac. The quality of meats that Drewes Bros. used to have ended with Josh's untimely death in 2014. The decline began soon after his death and deteriorated until it closed in the summer of 2016. I finally had to quit because I refused to sell the crappy meats that the "new" owner obtained. I worked hard to keep things clean, but it is hard for one person to try to do it all. I ended up having a falling out with the owner and she made my final days miserable. Now that Barons has moved in, I am happy to go back and shop for the quality meats they carry. Their staff is great including Matt and Matt and Christian and the owner Dave. I want to wish them well and know the neighborhood appreciates them being there. I recently got a marinated Tri-Tip that was delicious. Welcome to Noe Valley, Barons and I hope you will be there a long time.
