Basblue is a women and non-binary centric workspace and cafe in Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Housed in a historic Victorian mansion in Detroit’s Cultural Center Historic District, BasBlue is a women-and-nonbinary-centered nonprofit launched in 2021 by Nancy Tellem that intentionally dispels the old, exclusionary image of social clubs. Plush upholstered seating, soothing blue, yellow, and green tones, and ample natural light soften the space’s imposing exposed red brick and dark wood detailing, creating a welcoming place to work, network, and learn. Members can attend educational seminars and networking events or hunker down with a laptop and enjoy the cozy cafe, which serves sandwiches and soups made using meats and broth from Marrow’s butcher shop, plus grab-and-go items and baked goods from local bakeries. The space runs programming such as a Trailblazer-in-Residence that awards 100 need-based annual memberships, and a monthly Pop-Up for a Purpose dining series that showcases local female chefs and donates part of proceeds to a charity of the chef’s choice; recent pop-ups included chef Ederique Goudia. BasBlue’s food and beverage program is run in collaboration with Ping Ho and Backbone Hospitality, with Sarah Welch and kitchen manager Kenna Dollette emphasizing women-led food businesses, local producers, and seasonality (with winter sourcing through Cherry Capital Foods and a more vegetable-forward summer menu). Menu highlights include a broccoli-chop vegetarian dish with red quinoa and a small breakfast selection such as an egg sandwich with hot honey and a daily quiche; the cafe is intended to feel like a home with excellent Wi‑Fi and good music. Beverage programming, overseen by sommelier Liz Martinez, includes member happy hours and twice-monthly free wine tastings, with an opening list focused on female winemakers. Memberships run $600 yearly for women 35 and younger and $1,200 for women 36 and older, and the nonprofit also offers grants and scholarships; BasBlue is open Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–8 p.m., located at 110 E. Ferry St in Detroit, and the cafe is open to the public with proof of vaccination required for entry." - Eater

Great place to hang out and have coffee. Beautiful building

Google
A beautiful place with ample space so that people aren’t on top of each other. I had the brown sugar shaken espresso martini as I sat at one of the many seated areas with windows and completed my work for the day. And then I learned that this is a woman owned establishment! I can’t wait to explore some of the classes they offer here as well. I love their mission statement: to be a dedicated safe place for women and non binary people in Detroit. I’ll certainly be back.

Wow, that is where I'll start. BasBlue is certainly one of the most beautiful and well-appointed coffee shops... anywhere! If you're looking to hold a quiet and important meeting at a coffee shop in Detroit, consider BasBlue. It's only real downside would be its hours. I'd love to have this open much earlier. This hidden gem starts being beautiful at the curb of this beautiful neighborhood on Ferry Street. The old home has been renovated in the most beautiful and tasteful way I've seen done in Detroit. The first-floor coffee shop is open to the public, and seating areas are set up in several rooms that can be comfortably used with your laptop for work or a quiet meeting in front of the fireplace with a colleague. The second floor is a private womans work-space space that is membership only. I was fortunate to get a tour, and if you're looking for a coworking space in Detroit, this really needs to be on your list to check out

Stopped by for lunch and some co-working. Beautiful space. Cool vibe especially of you like neo-soul and lattes while working. Bring headphones if you need A quiet atmosphere to focus. First floor and cafe is open to a to the public.

Basblue is a wonderful place to visit for meetings or coffee and an even better organization to join for membership! I joined before it opened based on a Detroit News article. I loved the concept of a professional women’s venue/club In Detroit and the price point was very low (and even tiered for earlier professionals), so I joined with the hopes that it would be executed as beautifully as the article described. I am pleasantly impressed with all of it: the graceful decor, customer service, the cafe, amenities, etc. The owner is also walking around greeting everyone! Such a warm energy and bright environment for working, meeting, or socializing. I highly recommend for professional women in Detroit.

I love coming here to study and meet people. I have never seen such a beautiful space before this. Every room has its own unique design and character.

Google
i’ve come here to study a few times and every time it’s always amazing. The staff is so kind and hospitable- The food and coffee is always great. I think they actually have a rotating menu throughout the year and they have different businesses in Detroit make the food there! The space itself is so comfortable and cute-even the music they play is good! Every time I come there is always women in business around having meetings or just chatting- which always helps me be more productive. I definitely recommend coming here!

Google
Our team had a fabulous experience hosting a wellness themed team off-site. The lower level yoga and wellness space was perfect for our needs, and we got to enjoy delicious coffee and drinks afterwards in the cafe. Thank you so much for hosting our team at BasBlue!

Yelp
This is a beautiful space in a women's club in midtown Detroit. It's located in a restored 1800s mansion. I love that beautiful homes in Detroit are being given new life and that all of us can enjoy them. I had lunch with a friend here, and we enjoyed our meals. Simple but well-made grilled cheese sandwich and chicken caser wrap. We decided that this was a place we'd return to for a quiet lunch in a comfortable setting. One policy I'm unsure I'm on board with is the laptop ban between 11:30 am and 2:00 pm. A worker was asking people to close their iPads and laptops, which was overkill if you ask me. Everyone was being quiet and respectful. I can see how this will dissuade people from coming here at lunchtime if they can't do work on their laptops while enjoying their lunch.

Yelp
I love this cafe! Busier and louder around lunch rush, but still has loud music playing even after crowd has dissipated. Despite being busy, the service was still quick and friendly from both the servers and the baristas! Very friendly staff willing to answer questions! I had the chai latte, and, this is why I am knocking down a star. I'd recommend getting something else- not my favorite. However, the curried coconut squash soup is incredible!! Tempted to give 5 stars just because of how delicious this is!! Overall I recommend this cafe if you have a bit more money to spend on food and drink, and prefer a friendly, social environment rather than a quiet space Note: this is a woman's club and upstairs is for members only, but you will have enough space downstairs with tables and couches available

Yelp
What an adorable hidden gem! We were riding scooters around and on the search for a great coffee. Yelp pointed us in the right direction! The lattes were on point and the berry danish was warm and delicious. Wish we had a little spot like this closer to home!

Yelp
Every event in this Yelp series is better than the next, actually they're all super awesome! I appreciate the work Nina and her team from The Love Experience add to each Monday night! The company is also great! I've made a few friends attending these events! I appreciate the hard work you put into making this happen!

Yelp
I'm obsessed with this café. Very rarely do I find a café that ticks all of the boxes for me. There is an equal amount of sitting space for those who want to read and relax and for those who want to have a conversation with friends. My iced autumn spice latte was exceptional. Give the size of my drink, I also think this was a fair price (I spent $21 for the sandwich and latte, plus a tip). The baristas were also incredibly kind and helpful and super conversational which made me feel comfortable coming to a place I had never been to before. Speaking of which, I didn't know what the BasBlue foundation was before I came, and after reading about it, I definitely believe I will be coming back again to support an establishment with a great food and coffee and an even better mission.

Yelp
I was very impressed for the minute that we walked in through the well-preserved door. We were greeted at the base of the grand staircase by young lady that directs you to the cafe. This building is a women's Club and the upper floors are for Members only or members and their guests. The cafe is quiet comfortable and definitely a beautiful space. I had the turkey melt and quite honestly I expected a small portioned sandwich with a large price. I was pleasantly surprised by a monstrous, tasty, reasonably priced meal. I know things are a little bit more expensive than they used to be pre-covid, so I won't say that this place is inexpensive however you do get bang for your buck. The staff was pleasant and very informative on the menu choices, there was no rush and it was a very nice experience.

Yelp
I always love coworking at Basblu. They always give dope vegan options and the menu is ever changing which keeps me guessing what great food I'm going to grab during lunch after busy meetings. It's a great place to grab a bite and take care of business. Best of both worlds for the business babes

Yelp
This is probably the best hidden gem in Detroit. Inside of a house in a neighborhood, the whole space has been converted into a cafe and co-working/office space. The cafe has amazing drink and food selections that are as tasty as they are visually aesthetic. I would recommend the french toast and the basblue latte. I am always in awe that the space actually exists and isn't talked about more, but every time I post, I always get friends replying and asking where I am. I would highly recommend coming here for brunch and working out of the cafe. It's a cool place to check out and definitely a unique and historic Detroit spot.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL space in the neighborhood. Each room has a different vibe. I love that it feels like I don't have to rush out of there, like a coffee house in the 90s. I love that this is a woman's consortium.

Yelp
Will definitely be back if I have the chance. Came for breakfast with the family, and at first worried there wasn't much more than coffee and pastries. The menu is small, but it is divine. My daughter ordered the smoked salmon platter, which was beyond amazing. And the decor is gorgeous, classy, comfortable, but not stuffy. Staff was wonderful--friendly and gracious. Hope to repeat the experience soon.
