Charleston’s Top Restaurant Standbys of 2019: Daps, Lewis Barbecue, and More - Eater Carolinas

"Erin Perkins, editor Eater Charleston: I’m always trying the new places, so it’s rare to be a “regular” anywhere, but I’d say I’ve visited Basil, Moe’s Crosstown, and Oak Steakhouse (go on Sundays, for half-price wine) several times this year." - Erin Perkins

I moved away from San Angelo 2 months ago and not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought about the Pad Thai at Basil in San Angelo!! HIGHLY recommend! By far the best Pad Thai I have ever had! Became my weekly out-to-eat place! The staff are always so kind and welcoming! I have tried many of their other dishes and have never been disappointed! 10/10 recommend if you’re looking for good food and good portions!

Google
We are always good to our servers and they just gave that same vibe back =) Amazing! Really good Thai food! We love the Massaman curry and Pad Thai.

Google
I ate at the restaurant this time and had some octopus along with the soft shell crab. The octopus was sweet and the soft shell crab so good. Way to go, I found my new sushi spot! I got my food delivered, and it was delicious. I got the soft shell crab roll and even though I got it delivered in a white plastic box, it was still amazing. Great job at taking away the craving!

Upon pulling up to the restaurant, we were greeted with a strong smell of cigarette smoke. Stepping inside the restaurant, we were greeted with an unpleasant smell as if the restrooms were right by the front door. It was already late or we wouldn't have continued this new restaurant exploration. Besides, sometimes these things happen and the food can still be good (as per the reviews of many patrons). The restaurant itself seemed clean. Sometimes you run into a sticky table/chair situation but that wasn't the case here. So we decide to still give it a try. The food was quick (there was no one else in the establishment). BUT this is where it fell apart. Once we got home, we realized that one of the sauces had leaked out into the bag and had covered everything in sticky brown teriyaki sauce. THANKFULLY, none of the bags had holes or that would have been an unpleasant and messy situation. For both meals, very little meat was included. You would have thought we ordered vegetarian. The taste for one of the meals was good but ended up giving me a headache that lasted until I fell asleep. And the other meal did not live up to expectations. Overall, we wouldn't try this restaurant again because it's not worth the price, the smell, or the possible sauce leak.

Google
I have eaten in many Asian cuisines and Basil has by far been the best I have ever tired. The shrimp pho, and combination fried rice was delightful. This is a must try if in San Angelo.

Google
We had no idea that San Angelo offered pho anywhere, and we were delighted to find Basil. The beef pho was amazing. We knocked off a star only because the ambience was a little off, but the food and service were legit. Disfruta/Enjoy! 💯 🔥

Google
The food was great, I ordered the Pho soup large size and holy-moly !! it was a huge bowl of soup, it was delicious, and added some of the hot oil sauce they served with it and it was super spicy which I love. I think its Vietnamese type food, first time iv'e been here. See pictures, I would definitely eat there again.

Google
Attended for supper with my partner for our first time. She had the yellow curry with steamed rice which she loved and tasted divine. She mentioned the potatoes could have more seasoning. I had the beef brisket pho with all the toppings. No cilantro as it was not offered and there was no sriracha either. As a pho connoisseur, the broth was not up to par and lacking the flavor. I did not appreciate the flavor at all and could not finish the pho. The service was wonderful and the pricing is very reasonable. Also- they do have filtered water.

Yelp
Delicious and good priced papaya salad but the chicken satay is the worst I've had. It was so cold and so tough that it wasn't even edible...

Yelp
Solid food, a great selection of Thai, Curries, some Japanese and even Sushi. I'm looking forward to trying more dishes!!

Yelp
We're on a road trip for the GF's birthday. We spend the first couple of days in Marfa, Texas and then decided we needed some valley time. Came back out of the high desert, went east on 10, and headed north to San Angelo. Been wanting to head over that way for awhile; she's checking out food options about 20 miles out and came up with Basil as our lunch destination. Thai food in San Angelo? What could possibly go wrong! Sarcasm aside our choices were really tasty! Steamed dumplings were nice; cream cheese wontons with provided dipping sauce also made good marks. Pad Thai (my dish) ordered 4 spicy provided a nice level of heat. GF's combination lo mein noodles met with her approval too. Couple of issues led you a star knocked off. First, if I'm ordering a high level of spice you'd think the server would be checking on drink levels. Another employee noticed my empty glass more than our actual server. Only other issue was our appetizers basically came out with the entrees. Other than that Basil was a stellar find!

Yelp
Very clean restaurant and very good food. I was pleasantly surprised. I just placed my fourth order in as many weeks. My Colorado girlfriend says the Pho is better than anything she's had in the Denver area. She knows her upscale food, so quite a compliment, coming from her.

Yelp
The food was and is fantastic from this establishment. My one complaint is the person responsible for assuring the delivery person gets the correct order failed this time. I am not complaining to much as we all make our mistakes. I will say I gave it 3 stars, not anything to do with the food as it was superb. And ad I stated the person taking the order was extreme apologetic... I will definitely order from this establishment again. I hope Basil, forgives me for this. I stated my honest opinion and honestly, the way they treated me was very honorable she offered. I didn't want to have anyone else come out to deliver a minor mistake. Mistakes happen. I was very happy with the food. It was just an unfortunate happening. They were so pleasant so I have no complaints. I probably should've get them for stars honestly. That's all I have to say thank you have a good day.

Yelp
Overall I'm impressed with my experience dining here at lunchtime today. The service was prompt and friendly. The appetizer portion size was larger than expected and both appetizers arrived screaming hot! The entrees were both delicious. The curry is the best I've had in San Angelo. It was a little too spicy but I must have gotten accustomed to it because I almost finished it. The reasons I didn't give it five stars, areas in the dining need visible repair such as the ceiling tiles over the sushi bar. There was also a strong cleaning product smell during most of our visit.

Yelp
4.0 Stars (To-Go Order Review) Location Overview: You can find this restaurant in the large shopping plaza on Knickerbocker and Sunset across the street from the hospital. It is located in one of the smaller shopping plaza's near The UPS Store and Lotus Cafe. Customer Service: This was a to-go order, all items that were ordered through a third party were delivered without any issues. No items missing. Quality/Quantity: The quality of the Beef Pho and spring rolls from Basil were outstanding, had tons of flavor and spiciness, it was just as fresh as if I was at the restaurant. The quantity of items from their menu is extensive and has much to offer and will give you plenty to be full on. Side Notes: Weather you eat here or to-go, this is one of the better Asian options in San Angelo.

Yelp
I had the Tom Yum soup, it was a very flavorful soup. I enjoyed it I'm looking forward to coming back and trying some other entrees.

Yelp
The food here is wonderful and we had the best service! We had the egg rolls, yellow curry and pad Thai and it was all really good. Been in San Angelo for a year and we just now discovered this place, we will be back!

Aaron L.

Yelp
This was our first time in, hopefully we just caught them on a bad day. First of all it was very dirty. The floors and the bathroom. There was no toilet paper in the women's restroom, I told our waitress. When I went back in with my kids later in our visit it still had not been filled. We tried curry soup, a coconut soup, the kids split fried rice and pho, a tofu appetizer and spring roll appetizer. The soups were ok, lots of stems of the vegetables I had to spit out. My daughter loved the spring rolls, but it's not served with the traditional peanut sauce. The milk tea with boba was not mixed well, very textured if that makes sense.

Karen S.

Yelp
No service because they are not even open. This place was highly recommended to me. Just like Texas, when a business owner wants to take leave, they shut the whole thing down. They don't trust nobody to keep the place going!!!
google avatar

Kalyn S.

Yelp
Tom Ka with chicken smelled overly fishy and the chicken seemed undercooked, didn't enjoy due to texture and the lemongrass had some untrimmed pieces I had to discard. Husband enjoyed the wings and basil fried rice. I also ordered the Texas roll but could not eat as it was floating in all the sauces they added, my mistake for not requesting no sauce or sauce on the side.

Stephanie S.

Yelp
FOOT IS DELICIOUS. Doesn't matter what you Order it's All So Good. You will Not Be Disappointed.

Yelp
Wry very good! Service was a bit slow but it was fine, had the drunkin noodles with shrimp, yellow curry rice and dumplings. Best Thai food within a 5 hour radius. Authentic, great service, great food!!

Joann B.

Yelp
We ordered our food to go because we were traveling through San Angelo. The inside of the restaurant looked clean and like a place I would enjoy indoor dining. Our food was all very flavorful and decent size portions.

Chelsea M.

Yelp
There were gnats in our drinks, and probably the food too. We couldnt eat the food due to fear of finding bugs in there too. We only at a couple of bites and they charged us $42 for two people who didn't eat any of their food. When we told the waitress, she didn't act sit prided or apologetic and just told us that we can pay up front. She took $5 off but that was all. Do not recommend this unsanitary establishment at all.

Yelp
New to the area and I love Thai food. I was craving curry and got super lucky when I found Basil. I chose the yellow curry and it was sooooo good. My server was Zephen and he was great. I will be a regular. Oh, the Thai tea is great. Me personally had to get some extra water to delete it down some. But that's just my preference.

Jason B.

Yelp
Food was great, best smoke salmon Maki I've ever had.. pad kra pao was good as well although I added shrimp for $3 and only got one shrimp. Crab rangoons were great. Don't order egg rolls if you don't like spring roll wraps. Sauces were good. I'll eat here again, just won't do add on's or egg rolls.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is delicious! Heard about this place through word of mouth and was a little bit hidden due to being in a complex where the different shops and restaurants have huge signs. But so glad we found it. I got the spring rolls and Tom Ka with chicken. I loved the spring rolls!!! I love that they have cilantro instead of the Thai basil (mint). I hate Thai basil and would always pick it out of my spring rolls at restaurants back home. So glad that I got to enjoy it as is. The Tom Ka was a little bit more watery than I'm used to but it was soooo good! I really enjoyed the flavor and the level of spicy was perfect. My friends enjoyed their meals but there was a piece of hair wrapped into one of their sushi rolls. The server was Alfredo and he was amazing! Very pleasant from the moment we walked in until the moment we left. He even put on some theatrics while serving us our dishes. His energy lit up the room. Will definitely be back to try something new.

Chuck C.

Yelp
Consistently good food and friendly service. From sushi to Pho to any other dish on the menu it's just Good.

Yelp
Basil is easily one of my favorite restaurants EVER!! The staff is friendly, accommodating, and welcoming. The food is always incredible, fresh, and full of flavor. I love their Sushi, Pho, and Drunken Noodles! So glad to have this amazing restaurant down the street from my apartment.

Teresa B.

Yelp
The service was wonderful. Loved the food and nice, clean and mellow atmosphere. My husband ordered the Chicken Drunken Noodles and I had the Chicken Pad Thai and we shared a Smokey Salmon Roll. They we're all delicious. They have gained a big fan from both of us. We will definitely be back when out this direction.
google avatar

Richard H.

Yelp
I had mostly hors d'oeuvres and they were all very pleasant. There was a milky tea which had a very unusual spice set.
google avatar

Braxton G.

Yelp
Ive gotten green curry twice and have enjoyed it both times. My wife has gotten sweet and sour chicken and enjoyed it. The fried rice is different and not what you'd expect but it wasn't bad. Another friend of ours tried the pho and said theirs tasted good. Probably one of the better Asian places in San Angelo.
google avatar

Lorenzo L.

Yelp
Not sure who to blame here, but we placed an order for a group of friends through Favor. We received a confirmation email, then nothing. An hour later I called Basil and they suggested I call the Favor 800 number. Obviously, that is not a good option for a restaurant 2 miles from my house. Anyway, we made sandwiches and moved on. But I would be cautious with both Favor and Basil if receiving your order is important.
google avatar

Mezly L.

Yelp
This place has never disappointed me. Very fresh and delicious food! Tofu age is a must every time. Cannot go wrong with any of the menu items! Staff is always friendly and attentive!!
google avatar

Naomi S.

Yelp
The food was decently portioned. However I was not satisfied with the vegetable lo mein. The dish was saltier than usual and the noodles were cooked to long. They were puffy and extremely soft. I don't think I'll be ordering this from here again. Maybe I'll give it a try with a different dish next time.

Lori L.

Yelp
Love it here and eat here often... About once every 2 weeks. Try the Pad See Ew. A family favorite!

Lowmaja2007 L.

Yelp
My wife and I try to eat here on a weekly basis, it is a little hidden gem in our town. We order the Pork Pad Mei with egg rolls every visit and it never disappoints. They spice it up for us and the spice levels are perfect. Friendly staff and very attentive to their customers.
google avatar

Abby N.

Yelp
My go to place! I live in Basil! Tom Ka with chicken is the bomb! Stuff is very friendly. Family own the best Asian food in town in my opinion. I'm well traveled and know a good Asian food:)

Vania P.

Yelp
This review is based on just yellow curry, drunken noodles and thai tea. Chicken Yellow Curry 0 spice level was bland and dint have much flavor. This is the reason im giving it a 3 star. Beef Drunken Noodles 3 spice level was really tasty and the level spiciness was more of a 5/5. But overall really good. Thai tea was good as well. Customer Service was good. Ladies working there were very sweet.

Yelp
This is the Best Asian Restaurant here in San Angelo, this place deserves to be recognized! I am a full blooded Asian and I know what Asian Authentic food taste like coming from someone who has been all over Asia, this is so far very close to being Authentic! Food was very good and the Prices are very reasonable as well, The restaurant is super clean and service was quick! I have ordered pork egg rolls and combination Pho it was so Delicious! I am definitely coming back for more!
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Please San Angelo! Show this place some love so it doesn't disappear! This is seriously some of the best Thai/Japanese food I've ever had. The staff is so friendly and the food is always fresh and comes out quick! I've sat down in the restaurant and ordered carry-out and both times were so amazing. I recommend the curry rice! and the crab rangoon, really everything I've tried there is amazing!

BugEye B.

Yelp
I'm Thai and trying to find an authentic Thai restaurant. The search continues. The food is good but not authentic to me. Even the cha yen (Thai tea) was not quite right.....good but not right. I like the restaurant and I'd still come back.
google avatar

Rachael S.

Yelp
The straight up best Asian food I had while in San Angelo. Better than any other places I tried trying to make up for the amazing restaurants I had in California. Wish I had realized it was this good earlier

Ezekiel A.

Yelp
Definitely order for pickup because they are extremely short staffed and the waitress we arrived to had ABSOLUTELY NO HUSTLE. A couple that arrived before us walked out after maybe 20 mins after we all waited. They had not received their drinks either. AC wasn't working so that was not pleasant. So, food is fantastic but order for pickup. TRUST ME. LoL

Cameron S.

Yelp
I've eaten here multiple times and I'm so excited to have a place like this in San Angelo. The owners are the nicest folks and have great recommendations. The restaurant is clean and the service was very friendly. It's very affordable and my experience is that their portions are generous. Personally, I ate the yellow curry with chicken. It was some of the best I've ever had outside of Thailand. You can taste hints of the coconut milk, but it mixes perfectly. There was a generous helping of chicken in the curry. Others in my party got Pad Thai and a couple types of fried rice. I got to taste them all and they were very good. The Pad Thai was sweeter than it is in Thailand, but it was still good. Y'all support this place, we need them to stick around!

joanna D.

Yelp
I had the teriyaki chicken, it was a little sweeter then I've ever had before but honestly it was amazing

Rebecca Y.

Yelp
I tried the red curry and it was delicious. I will definitely be back to try more items on the menu.
google avatar

Tara B.

Yelp
Basil is an absolute delight! Each dish we have ordered has been delicious! Whether dining in or carry out the quality and quantity are incredible.
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
Yum yum! I got the chicken pad thai, a side salad with the ginger dressing, and the spicy shrimp appetizer. Everything was delicious! Not too heavy, not over seasoned, and definitely fresh. The ginger dressing was refreshing and bright! The shrimp were cooking perfectly and the sauce on top was BOMB! The pad thai was great. Not too saucy and the noodles weren't mushy. All in all, two thumbs up! I highly recommend stopping by for some good eats!
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Basil is amazing, from their egg rolls to their deep fried sushi. I keep on going back and I'm never disappointed.
google avatar

Martha T.

Yelp
I had the spicy chicken plate at Basil and I was impressed by the portion size and taste! The owner is incredibly friendly and sweet. I can't wait to try more of the menu!
google avatar

Angelita N.

Yelp
Love there combination fried rice. I also order a strawberry smoothie with boba! It's a bit pricey but the food is worth it.
google avatar

Barbara R.

Yelp
Whenever I come here I always get the meatball pho. I didn't take a picture of it bc I always just dig right in. It's so good. They always give a generous amount of noodles and good amount of sides to put into the soup. The chili oil there is so spicy and so good, I put it in my pho every time. The small pho is reasonably priced at right under 7 dollars. The small pho is all you need. I think the bowl was pretty big for a small. We got a couple rolls of sushi, the sushi chef in my opinion is one of the best in San Angelo. The rice is not too dry or too sticky. The ingredients always taste fresh and the presentation is always so lovely. The phad Thai is also so good. I think the portions are generous as well. And a dish I would recommend is the Hawaiian fried rice. The fried rice there in general is so delicious. So much flavor is put into it. We ordered the small pho, 2 Thai teas, 2 sushi rolls, and the phad thai for about 34 dollars. Not bad. The atmosphere is really pleasant. There's always music playing in that background. They accommodate large parties, and it also looks like they are working on a sushi bar.

Yelp
Ordered to go and the food was excellent. Beef & shrimp Pad See Eew and yellow curry. Both were requested spicy at levels 3 and 5 for the curry. The Pad see eew was definitely warm and enjoyable for me. My husband who loves things extremely hot said it had a nice build but was definitely not a 5. The flavors were perfect and the only thing my husband would have preferred is for the curry to be a tad thicker. It was slightly runny. Restaurant was clean and quiet for a Tuesday eve. Would have given 5 stars but our to go order took nearly 45 mins. The hostess did apologize for the wait and we appreciate this. We would visit them again but maybe call ahead. We def recommend.

Christopher C.

Yelp
I was SURPRISED to say the least when I entered. I have never been there before. Pleasant environment and the Service was First Class. Polite, perfect execution, quick responses to requests, accurate listening skills and pleasant to say the Least. :) . The Food was not only beautiful, bountiful and delivered quickly but absolutely delicious. I had the combo Pho & rainbow roll & shared egg rolls and my wife had Salmon Nigiri & a California Roll. Nice to see another Great Restaurant in San Angelo!
google avatar

Devin C.

Yelp
Well.. I am very disappointed in this restaurant. A newly opened place and I go by during regular business hours and they are close. No sign posted, no notice...just closed. Not sure how you can do business if you arent open when you say you are. Came all the way from out of town...will not ever be trying this place after all. Dont waste the gas to go eat here, they obviously wont be open.

Yelp
Growing up in a family of gourmet Chefs, being a restaurant manager as well, there is nothing in this world that I appreciate more than amazing food. If there is one thing my family is passionate about is authentic, fresh, high quality food. Anyone in this world can cook, we all can whip up meals together, and food is what brings families comfort its a way of sharing love, feeding people is the greatest form of love that you can show someone. There is a difference between cooking to express love, and cooking in a way that can really transit someone to experience your story you are trying to share through your food, that takes you on a adventure is a rare gift. This family owned and ran restaurant does just that. When you eat here you go to another level, its not just feeding yourself amazing meals that feed your soul. You get to experience a whole pallet of fresh high quality foods that seriously refuel you during the day, or relax you after a long tiring work day, its healing. The owner was our server, we were expressing the gratefulness we have for their quality of flavor and freshness, explaining how we feel it makes them standout amongst other places we have been to (mind you we have traveled across the country broadening our food pallets and having an array of chefs in the family we take food seriously), we asked what do they do that makes them standout so well? They drive every week themselves to get products from the DFW area - due to the fact they cannot get those quality ingredients around San Angelo. YES ! This is hard work. Dedication. And taking pride to go above and beyond what others wont do. Service was fast and attentive. We felt apart of the family. I am so thankful to get this quality of food and knowing now I dont need to drive 5 hours to get the quality I expect. We live rural and commuting an hour is well worth trip. We took several extra full course orders to go so we can continue to eat it during the weekend. I am looking forward to revisiting is an understatement. You guys deserve so much more recognition and respect. Its rare to be able to give people an experience through your food, and yall have mastered the skill. The art. And the work ethic that goes behind what it takes to gift that experience from your food. Truly a special place hidden and tucked into San Angelo.

Gabriella E.

Yelp
This isn't a reflection of the server we had today, since it was his first day and he was trying his best during a lunch rush. However, the fact that we had to seat ourselves (without being told it was seat yourself), having to wait 45 minutes without waters or any sort indication that we'd be able to get our orders in, this place was lackluster and disappointing and the food was not worth the 45 minute wait. The ambiance at the time is lacking, as it's clearly still being renovated, with wooden boards in both the dining area and in the bar area. At this current time, we've been here for an hour, placed our boba drinks in about 30 minutes ago, and still haven't received them. Poor service only due to poor staffing. Quality of service was good when we received it, albeit seldom. Food was okay, but not worth the wait. Wouldn't recommend coming here until they've settled in, made additions to the staff, and maybe finished the renovations.
