Ended up here through a series of mishaps. Had a reservation at a beautiful restaurant for our anniversary (couple, 3 adult children). Though I'd checked the online menu it turned out there was nothing other than apps we could eat there (lacking pescatarian/vegetarian options). We can't eat shellfish which there was plenty of.
Thinking on my feet where we could eat in Evanston, I came up with Bat 17 as I knew that all 5 of us could find something that we liked there, also it was in walking distance- would not require us to pile back into the car. It was quite a departure from our original nice restaurant, Bat 17 is a sports bar.. full stop.
When we got there, it was empty. Not a good sign on a Sunday night with loads of sports on tv. (Remember, it's a sports bar). As it had been so many years since I'd been there I had forgotten just how divey it is. I was gobsmacked but we tried to carry on.
My husband, maybe the pickiest eater of the bunch, finally settled on a tuna burger (I think) which he ate (I think sans a side), 1 kid who likes Caesar salad ordered that which is typical of him. Though each ate them I suspect they were just ok, edible. Another kid ordered an asparagus salad which she could barely eat; I didn't ask her what was not good about it.
Here follows why the one star: my son and I (the biggest and least picky eaters) ordered one of their specialty burgers, I requested mine with a veggie patty. They were out of the kind of bun specific to this particular burger so my son had to change his order, NBD. When my burger came, for some reason I felt compelled to ask the server (I've never felt the need to confirm this elsewhere) if she was 100% certain it was a veggie patty, though she assured me it was, it was 100% NOT!
The Tator tots were of the frozen kind you buy at the grocery and heat in your oven, the fries weren't particularly delicious either, nor was the liquidy horse radish sauce that came with my burger. Also the waitress was, aside from the veggie patty fiasco, a little goofy.
