The 15 Best Pizza Places In Austin

"Bat City Pies is home to our favorite Detroit-style pizza in Austin. The crust is light and airy, with a thick layer of cheese and enough tangy marinara to balance everything out. We like the KB Special that’s topped with pepperoni, pineapple, peppadews, and a drizzle of tangy balsamic. Just know that these pies are thick, made to order, and can take a while to come out. Order online in advance, or grab a beer from The Buzz Mill where it’s parked and get comfy. They’re worth the wait." - nicolai mccrary, raphael brion

Bat City Pies - Review - East Riverside - Austin - The Infatuation

"To this day, we’ve never met anyone who actually calls Austin “Bat City,” but there’s no denying that this town has a lot of bats—about 1.5 million, in fact. What Austin doesn’t have, however, is an abundance of great Detroit-style pizza. Outside of the national chain Jet’s and the local chain Via 313, options are limited. That’s where Bat City Pies comes in. Parked at The Buzz Mill on East Riverside, they’re slinging some of the best deep-dish pan pies in Austin—or, fine, Bat City. If you’ve been a Via 313 loyalist, it might be time to rethink your allegiances. Bat City’s crust is airier, its edges crispier, and its toppings more generous. Try the KB Special—essentially a Hawaiian leveled up with pepperoni, peppadews, and a drizzle of tangy balsamic—and embrace the truth: pineapple does belong on pizza when done right. Just know that these pies are thick, made to order, and can take a while to come out. Order online in advance, or grab a beer from the bar and settle in on the patio—there’s usually live music to keep you entertained while you wait. Food Rundown photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Meatballs These are well seasoned, and the marinara is nice and tangy, but the texture is a little too soft and bready. Skip them and get more pizza or a salad, unless you’re desperate for protein. photo credit: Nicolai McCrary Pizzas The pizzas are light and airy, with a thick layer of cheese and enough tangy marinara to balance everything out. We like the KB Special mentioned above, but the classic pepperoni also hits exactly how you want it to." - Nicolai McCrary

Best Late-Night Food in Austin Restaurants | Eater Austin

"The food truck slings Detroit-style pies, includin build your own and vegan options. Along with the pizza, there are other Italian bites like meatballs and its Bat Bites (peppadew peppers stuffed with gorgonzola that’s then wrapped in prosciutto and then topped with breadcrumbs and a balsamic drizzle). There are loads of picnic tables outside to meet some fellow Austinites, place a takeout order online or in person." - Nadia Chaudhury

Google
Fantastic local Detroit style pizza! Everything was served super hot and fresh. You can't skip the meatballs, they're killer. It's definitely one of the better pizzas you can get in town and I thought it was well worth the drive from RR.

Google
Really great Detroit style pizza. I look forward to returning. The sauce is the best part of the pizza - perfect amount of saltiness and a really unique flavor in the tomato I have been thinking about every day since my first visit. Cheese is also amazing. The dough had a little bit of chewiness to it but that's REALLY splitting hairs. I still can't recommend this pizza more. Great place to eat before a concert at Emos or Come and Take It Live. And goes perfectly with a Pecan Porter from The Buzz Mill!

Google
Hear me out. Bat City Pies makes Detroit pizza in Austin. Motown is the nickname for Detroit. They should be delivering pizza in the Batmobile. You’re welcome universe. Pizzas are great. Put BCP high up on your pizza list.

Google
Bat City Pies is hands down the best pizza in Austin! This is my favorite, the ‘Don’t Call Me Darlin’ white pie. Really pairs well with a shot of Jim Beam and a cold PBR tall boy.

Google
We thought this place was a unique find. This dog-friendly coffee shop, bar, and food truck were a perfect spot for everyone. We ordered pizza, and the service was exceptional; he explained he uses all fresh ingredients. We grabbed a drink and waited. We noticed a BBQ truck that smelled amazing, we plan on trying that soon. Our pizza arrived, and it was phenomenal!! It's worth paying for the Uber to get there. The KB special was terrific! I have a new desire for Detroit-style pizza. Its not all the same. We ordered pizza a block off 6th Street next to our condo and it was so disappointing. After Bat city pies it will be hard to compare.

Google
This has got to be the best Detroit style pizza in the state. The bread is fluffy. Sauce was sweet & full of flavor. The cheese was crisped perfectly on everything. I can't wait to come back for more!

Google
Wow, just WOW! I tried this place on a whim because of an article I read and I was not disappointed. I was actually blown away. I had the pepperoni and it absolutely nailed every aspect of Detroit style. The crust was pillowy and soft with a nice crisp on the bottom. The sauce was bright and perfectly sweet and tangy perfectly balancing the richness from the cheese and cupped pepperoni. The slightly golden parmesan on top delivered a punch of intense flavor. And the best part, my favorite part: the crispy cheese on the edges of the crust was perfectly crispy and golden brown. No “bald” spots either, every piece offered the perfect bite. The ratios were also perfect. I’ve found most Detroit pizza to be too bread heavy, but this one was perfectly balanced with crust, sauce and cheese. I’ve been to Via and Jets. Neither compelled me to come back in favor of a traditional NY style. I usually go to Home Slice for NY style or Conan’s for deep dish instead. The fact I would now prefer Bat City Pies over either of those with this style compelled me to write this. And a shorter drive from my place? Too good to be true! Thank you for the incredible pizza!

Yelp
This place is FANTASTIC. I personally think its the best Detroit style in Austin. I was obsessed and still am with Via, but this place edges it out for the best IMO. The crust is like caramelized and crunchy yet light too. It is a fantastic pie. Holds up really well in a delivery too.

Yelp
Super tasty Chicago style deep dish, but crunchy pizza we had ours topped with pepperoni and pineapple.

Yelp
Wanted pizza one of the nights during a recent visit and found this place after reading lots of reviews. In Austin, you will typically find some amazing food on a truck and this was no different. We parked in the lot of convenience store and the outside area of a bar. Admittedly, we were a little confused on where it was located but after cutting through the outdoor area of the bar, we found the truck in the rear. A very friendly guy took our orders, gave us an estimate and we were off to grab a drink at the bar. I ordered a pepperoni, bacon, mushroom and green pepper pie and my friend got the Lil Mama with chicken, pickles, Gorgonzola, red onion with a hot sauce and ranch drizzle. They were both ready before the time given and looked amazing. I'm a Chicagoan but love Detroit style pizza and this did not disappoint. We both thoroughly enjoyed our pies and they reheated well the next day. If you're in Austin and in search of a solid pizza, this place definitely has what you want.
google avatar

Karla D.

Yelp
I love their sauce so freaking much. It's so old-school, rustic Italian. Reminds me of my Nana's kitchen. We usually order pepperoni with extra cheese and red pepper. The crust is thick but light. The perfect ratio of toppings to dough each an every time.
google avatar

Lindsay C.

Yelp
Good sauce and ambiance, thick thick cheese layer and very minimal toppings for the 25 min wait (w no other customers). Cant seem to find good pizza in Austin. Might have too high of standards but don't know how hard it is to make a pie. Likely good for a Detroit pizza is that is synonymous with lasagna.
google avatar

Matthew P.

Yelp
Bat City Pies Bat city pies was phenomenal. I went on a Friday evening to get some pies to go. There wasn't a wait so the pizzas were out quickly. I ordered the KB Special & Don't Call Me Darlin'. These two were a perfect pairing as they were opposites of each other. The flavors were so bold on both. the KB special was perfectly balanced with toppings but the red sauce and pineapple were outstanding. Don't call me Darlin' was light and so comforting . The best part about these pizzas was the cheese crispy crust - it was the greatest thing ever. I loveeeee that we have an alternative to Via 313 now! Best Detroit pizza in Austin?? It definitely makes you raise the question!
google avatar

Blake A.

Yelp
Better than via 313 and that Detroit crust insures you have leftovers for tomorrow. Also the meatball sub is S-tier!
google avatar

Matthew V.

Yelp
If you've ever been a little lit up late night and tried to make a pizza, this was worse than what you created, but along those lines. That's the review. Stoner with a microwave pizza
google avatar

Emily W.

Yelp
Favorite place in Austin to go for pizza! An ideal deep dish pizza. Parking may be hard on the weekends, but worth the hassle.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
"Go Back To Cali" DOES feel like a personal attack, but in the case of Bat City Pies, I'll accept the gentle insult because it's a damned good slice. It stacks up vegan cheese, artichokes, raw and roasted peppers, red onion, and olives with a marinara base on fat Detroit-style pizza dough. These hefty rectangles are thick, satisfying to sink your teeth into, and definitely good food value for the cost. This would easily serve two, or keep nicely to make a second meal for one. If you wanted to extend the meal with some salad because #health, it could be dinner for a family of four. They are not shy with the toppings, making each slice totally loaded with goodies. Happy to have an excellent alternative to and upgrade over Via 313, conveniently stationed at Buzz Mill Riverside. Open late which is another rarity, midnight - 2am depending on the day.

Yelp
The pizza! Omg! I had the Sunkissed Sweetheart and I added chicken to it. Wow!! Thick crust but not at all dry! Yum yum. Definitely going back again. And I can't wait!

Yelp
The pizza was ok! If you're looking for a Sicilian pizza in Austin, I'd say this is the spot to try. I haven't heard of many other shops that serve this kind of pizza. However, if you're looking for New York/Detroit/Chicago quality Sicilian pizza, this is not it. Nevertheless, I think it's an okay nearby option. I did a make your own pizza with chicken, peppers, and pineapple. The red peppers were interesting and new, which I liked. The serving of sauce and cheese was generous. The edges of the crust were crispy. However, the bottom of the pizza was soft, and I wish it had also been crispy because that would have taken it over the top for me. The bottom of the pizza was too doughy and soft for my taste. The size of one pizza is huge! The pizza is 4 large squares, and if you're eating sides, one slice can be super filling. If not, two slices will definitely do the trick. Prices were really good for the amount of food you get. I believe the pizza I made on my own was about $16. No comments on service or ambiance, as I ordered to go. Overall, I think its a good spot to go if you're craving the Sicilian style pizza, but I probably wouldn't get it again. While I appreciated the large serving sizes and good prices, the pizza was just not flavorful or memorable enough for me to want more of. Overall, I'd give it a 6.5/10!

Yelp
This pizza is a must try! They are not stingy with the toppings and the owner takes pride in what he does and not just looking to make a dollar. My kind of peoples!!! Tips: The GPS take you to The Buzz Mill; park or walk around back. Bring at least 2X people, it's huge!!! You will need napkins... LOTS OF THEM It's cut into 4x squares but that's hard to tell from all of the toppings LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS OWNER - SUPPORT THEM; they keep the flavor local
google avatar

Rob P.

Yelp
I am a sucker for a square pie, and Bat City Pies does it right. Placed an order with an Uber credit I had and they got the pizza toppings slightly wrong, but still tasted great. Not a convenient location for me, thankfully, so I won't be getting fat on their pizza, but I will have to keep them in mind when I get the itch.

Meggie c.

Yelp
Our go-to pizza spot in Austin! Incredible every single time!!!!! Ain't a bad option on this menu! Great service and atmosphere
google avatar

Steven L.

Yelp
I hate to dampen the really high reviews but my experience with the pies got here was not 5-star worthy. I ordered two for delivery, no real issue with the delivery itself but the pies were a bit disappointing. I got a custom mushroom, olives, and red onions, and also tried one of their specialty pizzas, the Lil Mama. I thought the Lil Mama was pretty interesting, but both pizzas disappointed because the outer crust on them was burnt. You can sort of tell from the pictures, but this sort of left a slight bitter taste. And considering the Lil Mama was made with gorgonzola, that one tasted a little extra bitter. No problem with the inside bites, but that extra bitterness reduced my review to a 4-star review. Will have to try again and hope for a better day though.
google avatar

Tim J.

Yelp
This is some awesome thick crust, Detroit style pizza I think the crust is crispier and the sauce more flavorful than the other Austin establishment that has the Detroit area code in its name. I am so happy to know about this place. We had the delivery and were really pleased at how crispy the crust still was even after sitting in a box. Amazing taste , out performed expectations. Can't wait to try more things on the menu.

Lisa R.

Yelp
Tried it last night had the cheese and not too much of a fan. Crust was good, sauce was lacking and cheese was hard once it warmed up a bit. Stik trying to find a good Pizza in Austin!

Bryan B.

Yelp
Pizza was HEAVY! Felt like a bowling ball sitting in your gut all day. Trailer looked gnarly inside. Employees were in and out smoking, never saw any sanitary practices. Sauce and marinara tasted like canned. Cheese was good though.
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
Wow!! This is so freaking good! We had the Classic Pepperoni, KB Special and Barton Springs Supreme. All three were fantastic. Don't hesitate, just order from here. KB Special was our favorite but really this was a grand slam! Delicious!
google avatar

Bill B.

Yelp
Hands down, the best pizza in Austin. The service is awesome, the quality of the ingredients is top notch.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Delicious! 10/10 recommend. Way better than Via 313. Will be back!!! It's the right amount of crispy and soft.

Elisabeth B.

Yelp
Too much cheese for my liking. Otherwise, good crust and toppings. Also, they don't answer their phone.
google avatar

Krystle V.

Yelp
Really good food. The crust was cooked perfectly. The location is really nice and has a variety of activities. Good prices for the pizza too.

Greg G.

Yelp
I am visiting Austin for a business trip and found this gem through a Google search. I had a delivery service bring it to my hotel. What a pleasant surprise. I eat pizza several times a week. Bat City makes an excellent product with a nice combination of crust, sauce, cheese, and toppings. I love the burnt cheese edge which Detroit style is known for. They seem to have one size and I ate the whole thing. It was a bit too much for one serving but I couldn't help myself. If I lived in Austin I would be a regular. Give it a try!
google avatar

Cassie H.

Yelp
Food is absolutely delicious! Got the chef's special pie and the meatballs. All fresh, never frozen, and cooked to perfection. The chef is also very personable and offers great service. Overall a wonderful experience and ambiance!
google avatar

Mason W.

Yelp
Great pies, cool staff, and a big patio space to hang out. What's not to love?! Side note: try the Bat Bites!
google avatar

Nicole M.

Yelp
Honestly so good. Little bit of a wait but so worth it. The movie playing, the drinks next door... such an excellent spot. Highly recommend for people that love thicker pizza and are willing to step out of the pizza norms
google avatar

Lee P.

Yelp
The pizza was really good. Unfortunately I remembered halfway through that I was allergic to tomatoes
google avatar

Ken S.

Yelp
To long of wait to order and they were out of stock of some stuff including meatballs, ugh

David G.

Yelp
This place is amazing! The owner dope and super passionate about his work. The pizza is amazing but the meatball sub is the best I've ever had. His wings are the sleeper. His peanut sauce is epic. I always come to Austin for food and r&r and this food truck is a must try.
google avatar

Vincent H.

Yelp
Couldn't wait for the photo. The smell of the sauce from this build your own Pepperoni, sausage, and mushroom Detroit Style was amazing. And the taste was even better. This stationary food truck pizza spot is well worth the visit on any trip to Austin. The truck is part of a collective of mobile options that have chosen to surround an eclectic local bar. Order and your mouth will be thanking me for the explosion of flavor the next several weeks.

Nathan R.

Yelp
This isn't just the best deep dish in ATX. It's the best pizza. The sauce. The crust. It's perfect. There's a lot of strong contenders in ATX, but this is it.

Jake W.

Yelp
I thought this was better than what I've had at via 313, best detroit style in the city. I'll be saving some for breakfast!
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
This pop-up food truck proved to be a great choice for us. I had searched for supper while we were in the airport area in Austin and found Bat City pies had good reviews so we gave it a try. The ingredients were fresh, the service was good and the setting was great. Thank you for a terrific meal!
google avatar

Juliet J.

Yelp
I ordered the Sunkist pizza. It was delicious! Super fresh. Creative toppings. Everyone at my table couldn't stop saying how yummy it was.
google avatar

Caitlin T.

Yelp
Pizza truck inside The Buzz Mill; We ordered the Sunkissed Sweetheart & the KB Special; the sunkissed sweetheart had a perfectly sweet, crispy crust and the KB special was more of a classic pizza vibe with the balsamic glaze topping it off. Everything was so so good and fresh! The owner stopped to chat and he was so friendly and down to earth with a clear passion for pizza. We cant wait togo back for the meatball sandwich!
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
The order was ready a bit early (ordered around 9:30pm, picked up around 10:15pm). The garlic cheese bread was delicious. Would recommend. Did not like "The Little Mama" pizza. I think it was the "sweet & spicy pickles," no bueno. It tasted like something was off/expired on the pizza. Would definitely give a different pizza a try next time though. The crispy-cheesy edges and medium-firm and simultaneously soft center dough is worth giving another try. The Sopapilla sticks were not at all "sopapilla"-like. The were just cinnamon sticks. These were just dense pizza dough sticks. None of the fluffy/airy/deliciousness of a sopapilla. If they would have just labeled them "cinnamon sticks" it would have been less disappointing to taste them. Would not recommend if wanting imagining a sopapilla. Would not purchase again.

Jessica R.

Yelp
Everyone I know has had a bad experience with the guy who works here. Completely awful. After my last experience I won't go back- not worth it dealing with guys like that

Sean C.

Yelp
Cool dude, and his eggplant parm sandwich was great ! I liked that it's by the coffee shop so I could eat, study, and have a drink. The outdoor seating was worth it

Zack G.

Yelp
Pizza was awful took forever.. over an hour honestly this dude is a terrible business owner
google avatar

Bryce R.

Yelp
Absolute fire. Best pizza I've had in Austin hands down. Cried for 20 min after my first bite

Caleb Y.

Yelp
Excellent pizza is hard to find. Good pizza is a dime a dozen, great pizza a little more rare. But truly life changing, heart stopping, tears of happiness inducing pizza is something you come across only a couple of times in your life. So yeah. This is excellent pizza. I got the KB special which came with pineapples, peppadew, pepperoni and a balsamic drizzle. It sounds too sweet (pineapple pizza haters need to grow up though) but the way they balance the toppings together is very satisfying. Sweet, acidic with the pop of the salty pepperoni brings it all together. That's not the best part though. Truly, the crust o; this square, Detroit style piece of heaven absolutely steals the show. That's how you know pizza is good; when you realize that no matter the toppings, it would be demolished. Perfectly crispy edges, a chew that doesn't overstay its welcome yet still stands up to the heavy toppings. It's everything you need for a pizza like this and more. I'm simply happy I got too this place before it blew up. Just excellent. 5/5 Yums
google avatar

Celeste B.

Yelp
Returned customer sat through Guardians of Galaxy with no popcorn thinking about the best pizza headed directly over for The Best pizza we ever had it was a breezy late afternoon and they had some nice music playing Still The Best Pizza Ever!!!
google avatar

Christy R.

Yelp
Delicious pizza! High quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. Love the blend of classic and creative pie options

Earl R.

Yelp
If you love Detroit style pizza, this is the place for you! 11/10 recommend! Dudes were cool and helpful. Bar next door had great drinks! Can't wait to go back! I'd recommend this over Via 313 and I love Via 313! One of my new favorite pizza places in town!
google avatar

Doug L.

Yelp
I got the Classic Pepperoni and it was great. I highly recommend their pizza. The owner is very nice as well.

Adam P.

Yelp
Holy sh*t. Via 313 better watch its back, there's a new sheriff in town. This is the best Detroit style pizza in town.

Mat D.

Yelp
This was just great. The bat bites are indeed delicious. It's just one skewer so not too big - definitely add to your order. This is Detroit style so it's thick pizza but it's got a crispy edge where cheese meets pan and that's the good stuff. Awesome patio at Buzz Mill and big selection of beers. Plenty of big picnic tables to enjoy the food and atmosphere.
