Absolutely a must-try! Drove by this place one afternoon & saw that this had been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives so we knew we had to try it out. I’m so glad we stopped in! It did not disappoint. Got the classic fish & chips, fish tacos & the jumbo fried shrimp. The food came out piping hot & we dug right in. Every bite was delectable. The classic fish & chips was swai fish & it melted in your mouth. No one in our party has heard of this fish but certainly enjoyed it. The owner Jason is so kind & friendly, we enjoyed talking with him briefly. He congratulated us on our newborn baby boy who is currently in the NICU & was sweet enough to send him well wishes. We didn’t see anyone else working but he worked fast to get food in our bellies. We were impressed with his efficiency. Great location on Belmont Street! Located on a main busy street with tons of foot traffic. The vibe of this joint was very cool & classical, with no frills just damn good food. Indoor & outdoor seating options & you be glad you stopped by. Thanks for having us!

Google
The absolute BEST fish and chips experience ever! The batter was perfectly textured, the tartar sauce is so unique that lets the fish be the star of the meal but adding just enough of a note of flavor that you will fall in love with it! Hand cut chips that will make it the perfect match up. The owner is so personable and you can tell he has a passion for food. He comes from a lot of experience. Stop in today!

There are flavors that transport you through time and space and give your mind and taste buds the opportunity to reminisce about your past. This place does it for me. This brings me back to my childhood. Fish and chips by the sea. In a pub. After a night out with mates. Wash it all down with malt vinegar. This does it for me. The batter is batter - not breaded like most places in the US do it - & it falls off the fish too easily. Battered does it the proper way. The chips are thick cut. Soft on the inside. Bit of crisp on the outside. Dash of malt vinegar and I'm in heaven. It's rare to have two transcendent food experiences in one go but I have also lived in socal and miss proper fish tacos. This was also done right. You can't go wrong with these guys. Now, they just need the taps up and running and they will find it hard to get me to leave.

Google
We stopped out of curiosity for their Vegan Fish tacos, and it did not disappoint! They were hand battered, marinated, and super delicious. The owner even hand cuts it so the texture is more flaky. Super tasty, wouldn't have thought to check it out based in the name, but wow! Glad we did! New favorite vegan fish place in town!

Google
These are hands down the BEST fish and chips I’ve ever had.… in the world! I’ve had plenty of fish and chips over my life and nothing compares. The gluten free was also fantastic, I tasted no different between the gluten full and gluten free which is unheard of for GF folx. It’s so good I went back less than a week later and will be back in a few days to bring a few friends. I’ve thought about the fish and chips everyday since I first had them a week ago. The music is awesome and the owners vibes and service is immaculate. It’s a must try! (Vegan options also available, pictured is the gluten free version)

Google
Imo the best fish and chips in town! Other places you might get a good piece of fish, the chips are bland or the slaw too soggy but here everything was great! The fish is really good (we had the cod and tilapia), hand cut chips and the slaw was super tasty. On top of that, the owner is super friendly and humble. He suggested we try the catfish and yes we’ll be back!

Google
Amazing Curry Fish and Chips. I found the music to be a little too loud but otherwise the food was fantastic and didn’t know Guy Fierie was a fan. Amazing place in the Belmont area.

We had the garlic-ginger and the Asian chili fish and chips. They were both amazingly good. I enjoyed the garlic the most. Please support our local businesses!!

Yelp
This kind gent fried me up some of the tastiest fish and chips I have ever had. Flavour in every bite, there was. Traditional isn't the only choice, here. Curry, Ginger and even sriracha flavoured batters are available. And more than just English fare. Tacos, shrimp, and salmon to name just a few fried items. No beer or wine. Soda and waters, only. I have dreamed of a spot that serves only fish and chips. And here it is. But I feel that not too many people are aware of it's existence. Great potential for soccer groups and British bikers. The endorsement of Guy Fieri shows how well this food is loved. You have to try it to see the difference between the usual suspects and Batterfish.

Yelp
Well, I guess this will be a conflicted review.... So many 5 start reviews had me itching to get here! The vegan fish&chips and salmon fish and chips especially.... Our visit didn't go entirely as planned. The salmon was unavailable, and unfortunately they use sway for their fish and chips. So I couldn't even try those. We did however order the vegan fish and chips and shrimp. Both were good, as well as the chips. There wasn't any tartar sauce, or the white sauce we received did not resemble a traditional tartar(sort of like a ranch)? We attempted to order a beer but those were also unavailable. (Nothing on tap but supposedly coming soon. ) The gentleman working was quite kind and serviced us very well. I'd probably give 3.5 stars if I could but the other items really just took away from my ability to give it a higher rating. Try if you like!

Yelp
Everything fried is better, right? No not the stuff you fry stool needs to be good in the beginning. But no worries here at batterfish they know that good ingredients are the key to something even better. When it comes to fried fish or chicken the secret is not only in the pieces of fish or poultry, but it's in the batter. That's why Batterfish gives you choices: batter with Asian chili, curry, or garlic ginger to name just a few of the seven (!) he offers daily - all house-made with love As shy as I am I started with the traditional batter. The tartar sauce is house-made and the fish comes - also very British - with malt vinegar guess what house-made! Yummy The fries are crispy as they should be, not soggy or underdone. The fish itself is a big piece of flaky white fish perfectly fried with a delicious batter. I can wait to try the other flavors. Now I'll have to watch Guy Ferrari Tripple D's Season 27 Episode 3 and see if he agrees with me and thinks the same about Batterfish. A last alarming word - Here is a thing - please support local shops like this. Being on tv doesn't mean they getting rich. The owner Jason is a great guy but like almost anybody in the Portlands food scene, the business is struggling. Crazy high-ups in prices due to war and finding service crews is difficult after COVID. If you want to find perfect fish and other delicious items in the future it's important to walk by and get your food at small restaurants like Batterfish. As of today, he makes everything himself so be patient when you order since he is taking the time the food needs to be just perfect! And I ended myself with a not British inspired dish but a homage to Mexico and there frying perfection and ended with some churros. Great and crispy outside, soft inside and so good of a batter! And sorry that I'll do not made any pictures of the main meal - I will do it next time promised - but I totally had to bite into the fish and was having a nice talk with the owner so I forgot :)

Yelp
Who doesn't love a good ol' fish & chip shop!? I've been on the search for a solid place to get my usual fish & chip order and fried fish tacos and I'm so glad Batterfish opened up! Located on Belmont across from Hmart parking can be tough but the trip is worth it. The owner is the one taking the orders, prepping your food, and even delivering it to your table - killing it! Plenty of tables inside and if it's not raining even some outside to wait for your order. Be sure to check the board since the menu might change. This time around went to order the fish tacos and wow the fish was perfectly crispy and flaky. Good texture with the salsa & sauces and holds up well. Shared a taco with each person but you can easily devour it on your own. With the portion sizes and quality I think they have a fair price point. We didn't see drinks being served just yet but they do seem like they have the set up. Overall solid spot and be sure to come check them out! When we visited there was already a couple groups in front and a couple that came afterwards so the locals are enjoying it!

Yelp
Came here after reading an Eater article and looking for a good alternative to high-end seafood and also a good fish n chip. The restaurant in SE is in a rougher strip but the inside is very well furnished. Can definitely tell it is new. My wife and I were excited to see a burrito version of the traditional dish as we LOVE burritos. The fish was well prepared, had a good batter to it. The burrito had a good amount of fries inside and the house made tarter sauce didn't make it soggy. All wrapped tightly in a burrito and it was perfect. Great lunch!

Yelp
Fresh, fresh, and fresh! After I learned that they opened up a shop on Belmont, I really wanted to try it for myself. Came here on a Sunday afternoon and received a friendly welcome by Jay. He took the time to explain his menu and we were sold on the batter tacos $12.99. There are other things like catfish sandwiches, fish and chip burritos, and other fish options for fish & chips. All sounded so yummy, but we were really eyeing the tacos. After we ordered, we waited a bit for the food to come out. Two tacos served on a bed of fries. A couple of bites in, you can taste the crispiness of the batter and the juiciness of the fish. Although the fish was deep fried, it did not taste oily. Each bite of the taco contained fish; no batter fluff. I also really enjoyed the fries too as it was lightly salted, meaty and not greasy at all. Jay came to check in and explained that everything is made fresh in house. Fresh cut potatoes, never frozen and fresh cut cabbage slaw. The fish is battered and cooked when an order is put in, hence, a little bit of a wait, since it is freshly prepared. Inside or outside dining is available. Parking might be a bit difficult due to street parking only. Accepts cards or cash. Friendly service. I will be back to try the fish and chip burrito!! yum!

Nissa F.

Yelp
Amazing!!!! my husband and I just got fish and chip baskets. I got garlic ginger and he got the curry. It was served to us so incredibly fresh and hot. The portions are very healthy!! Love the vibe of the inside!! The food was served very fast! Excellent customer service!!! We will be back for sure!!

Roya B.

Yelp
Nice, casual place (order at the counter) with some picnic tables indoors. We ordered the catfish with salad and the mahi mahi tacos with fries. Good to know there are some non-fried items to balance out the fried fish. Everything was really tasty. Would return to try some other items.

Brandonopolis J.

Yelp
This is my favorite fish and chips. Crisppity crunchy exterior and milky creamy tender fish that is seasoned to perfection. They bring the flavor and just the right amount of seasoning. I cannot tell you how many times I've gone to other shops that have had the perfect crispy exterior only to be met with bland and overcooked fish inside. THIS IS IT! Also, the owner is adorable and a jovial delight.

Joel D.

Yelp
Both indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was friendly. They have several beer taps, but are not serving - possible don't have the license yet. I ordered the Wild Alaskan Cod Traditional Batter With Fries. The filet portion was a nice size, it was beautifully golden and the interior was flaky. The fries were average. Everything was under seasoned and left an oily aftertaste - the malt vinegar helped.

Kent H.

Yelp
Overall: Give it a try and the only thing you'll regret is not having discovered this earlier! Location: Right across the street from H-Mart on Belmont, surrounded by other restaurants but you'll definitely don't want to skip Batterfish! It's only street parking unless you shop at H-Mart. Food: There are plenty of different options but one thing that stands out is how fresh it is! The owner, Jay is extremely friendly and took the time to explain that his establishment does not have the fish that is full of batter but instead fish you can taste! On top of that, he actually takes pride in the ingredients by cutting things like cabbage and potatoes so he knows what he gets.

Jonathan S.

Yelp
Some of the absolute best fish n chips I've ever had. The owner was super hospitable and checked in to make sure I was enjoying everything. I'm definitely coming back!

Cameron E.

Yelp
The wife and I took a mini food vacation to Portland. We were looking for somewhere for lunch when this spot caught my eye on Google. I was instantly sold by looking at the menu. Went for lunch and my wife and I ordered their normal batter fish and chips. The batter was one of the lightest, yet crispy crunchy goodness radiated from the fresh moist fish. Instant love, my wife made it a priority to visit again on our way out the next day. To note about the ambiance of the place, very clean picnic-style benches with generous outside seating. Awesome music constantly playing by the owner of classic rock tunes. The Chef/Owner was busy at the time but still recognized us coming back. I made a special request for the shrimp to have Garlic and Ginger batter, it was busy and the Chef/Owner I believe made the batter on the spot special for the shrimp as it may be different. All I can say is you will taste the love in every bite you have. It's absolutely delicious and if you enjoy fish & chips, come here and you will not be disappointed!

Tony A.

Yelp
Surprisingly good fish and chips on SE Belmont. My partner and I went for the wild Alaskan cod with curry batter and the Asian spicy batter catfish, both which came with fries. Though the cod was quite good, the catfish stood out as the clear favorite. Perfectly prepared and really delicious. Impressively crispy batter on both orders of fish. The pieces of fish were generous, and the amount of fries that came with each order was just about right. We also had a side of very good cole slaw. The housemade tartar sauce was also really good. Ample seating, both inside and outside. Bus your own table. Maybe the best spot in NE Portland for fish and chips? Very good fish, great batter.

Jack G.

Yelp
Excellent fish & chips! The fish tacos are even more delicious. I highly recommend trying the various batter types. This is one of my favorite places for fried fish.

Daniel N.

Yelp
The fish was really tasty. My only recommendation is if the fish didn't separate from the batter to much.

Michael H.

Yelp
Wow and WOW! This guy, this place knows fish and knows frying! I've had some some good fish and chips but this really ups the game some. Dunno how he does it but is seems lighter than some fish and chips and the batters are seasoned, kinda subtle but they add a lot to fish. Not a heavy, thick layer of batter. Very obvious that the boss and the staff care about the food. If you get a chance, a chat with the owner is well worth your time...interesting guy that really cares about his food. (Great family too!) Parking in that area can be a bit of a hassle but it is worth the effort to stop by. I know I will be happy to stop in again...happy?, I am looking forward with some anticipation to stopping in again!

Pat C.

Yelp
Great chipper! I always appreciate good fish and chips and this spot didn't disappoint. This might be my favorite fish and chips in Portland now. It used to be The Frying Scotsman cart, but they moved out to Beaverton. First impression was it's a lot bigger inside than I anticipated. I thought it was just gonna be a take out window for some reason. Fish was flakey and fried pretty well. Good batter. The only thing I think they could've done better is made the fries crispier. Maybe if they have a double fried option for us that like our fries extra crispy. The only other thing is I was excited to see the curry fish. Was hoping it actually came with a side of curry for dipping, but I think it was just curry flavored batter (couldn't really taste the curry actually). Anyway, no points off for this...was really just my wishful thinking. Would definitely come again!

Hannah F.

Yelp
We all ordered different variations of the fish and chips and all were amazing! Super fresh and hot. Service was amazing and very quick. Highly recommend!

Dan R.

Yelp
Had the curry cod, good sized hunk of fish, silky batter, curry flavor noticeable but not strong, and the flavor lingers. Friendly fast service. The star lost is for the fries, a little soggy, several burnt end. Always appreciate having malt vinegar at the table. And their smooth tartar sauce is perfect

Tim T.

Yelp
So good. Got the jerk fried fish and it was excellent. Service was nice and friendly too. Will be back to try the fish tacos

Rebeca M.

Yelp
Delicious authentic fish and chips!! Nothing more you can ask for!! The fish is fresh and soo plump the fries are crispy on the outside yet soft on the inside. The tartar sauce had a great flavor and I'm very picky with sauces. The service is excellent will definitely be back whenever we are in the area again!

Ebenaceae B.

Yelp
Hand battered vegan fish tacos with vegan fish sauce for all those fried food lovers. The owner even marinates it in seaweed to give it that extra yummy flavor! Highly recommend if you're looking for something a little different in se.

Chezz C.

Yelp
Yup, it's everything you would want in a fish-and-chips place. Except draft beer, but the owner says that is coming. For now there a few bottles available. The fish and chips are delightful. And seem fairly priced. This stacks up with fish and chips I've had in London, Victoria, Seattle and certainly anywhere in Portland. It's a simple dish and Batterfish does it right. It's a casual place. Plenty of tables indoors and a few outdoors. Takeout is available but with fried food it's best to eat it ASAP. So unless you're taking it somewhere very close by, just sit down and eat it here. It's a bustling section of SE Belmont so you might have some interesting people-watching. If you want to try this place, unfortunately, you might have to get there soon. (And if you're looking for a restaurant job this would be a great time to go there too.) The owner says he has been having a difficult time finding staff, so is going it alone, and having a hard time staying open.

M B.

Yelp
This place has, by far, the best fish and chips in town. The batter is divine... so flavorful, crisp, not greasy. Just perfect. And there is the option of flavored batter. I love the Asian Spicy Chili. The Garlic Ginger is also great. The fries are also spot on. Canned/bottled beer.

Angie M.

Yelp
A new flaky white fish, it's was nice and mild. The batter was crisp and solid like I love. Tarter sauce on point. If you are like us, on the hunt for the perfect fish & chips, stop in. It's def worth a try.

Phil N.

Yelp
Fish and chips done right!! Yum. Everything on the menu is good but the Asian chili fish and chips is the bomb!!

G M.

Yelp
Really fantastic fish and chips, fish tacos and fish sandwiches. my go-to for all things fried fish in town. Give this place some love, you won't regret it. Before they are gone

Jon O.

Yelp
While this place doesn't dethrone HorseBrass just down the street for the best Fish and Chips in town, I thoroughly enjoyed what they're serving here and think it runs a close second. Mine came with a very generous filet of cod, in a nice batter that was plenty crispy without being soggy. Also felt light, and not too heavily breaded or battered. I can't wait to try the curry version and some of the other options. My wife had their gluten free batter which was equally exceptional. She loved it, and it's a real treat for her to be able to get quality fish and chips in town. The fries were solid. Nothing memorable, but plenty good enough. The slaw was a bit of a bland let down. I was pretty disappointed they're serving everything with single use plastic silverware. They already have to wash the serving trays, why not cut the waste and have some reusable silverware as well? Otherwise a great little addition to the neighborhood with really solid standards, and a few inventive menu offerings. Look forward to going back.

Linda B.

Yelp
The fish tacos were delicious. Nicely seasoned with yummy tartar sauce on the side. My partner had the fish and chips. Said the fish melted in your mouth, he really enjoyed it. The fries are just so-so.

Nina Z.

Yelp
Love this place! Food is great. Owner really cares about putting out quality food. I found myself and other customers humming along to the music multiple times. Great energy.

Chuck D.

Yelp
We followed Batterfish from the cart in Clackamas. The same great food they served there is in the new shop plus some great additions. The fish and chips burrito is excellent and the bacon battered burger is my meal on the next visit. For those of us still shy about eating inside the inside tables have plenty of space. The ceiling is very high and the ventilation is robust. There are outside tables as well. Strongly Recommend

cory h.

Yelp
Do you know those places where the wait staff are non-committal or even openly hostile, but you keep going back because the food is actually good? This is one of those places. If you're looking for a giant hunk of delicious fried fish, come here and they will feed you. There's also lots of cool little experiments that they try, with a lot of different flavor variations and some things that I have never seen before. That's what keeps me curious and wanting to come back. Just don't bother with trying to strike up a conversation

Chels B.

Yelp
The food was very fresh. We got the Wild Alaskan Cod in Curry batter, which was super flavorful! The portion sizes where also great too. Definitely going back soon!

H N.

Yelp
Friday = fish fry in my former part of the world, so landed here. The owner puts so much care into this shop and his food, it really shows in the result! Tried the homemade vegan fish/chips (tofu base, braised in seaweed) which were really nicely executed. Both the "fish" and chips were crisp, not oily. Added things like paired homemade vinegar sauces for each menu item were nice touches. Will be back to try the tacos, I can only assume they'll be meticulously done!

Linda W.

Yelp
Great food . I had the fish n chips .The owner can out to meet us . So explain to us about the tartare sauce, and why his is better. I don't like tartare sauce , but I love his . I will be coming back to try the salmon or shrimp, Very good food , good price . Looking forward to beer later .

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
Gluten-free deliciousness! It was a crispy and golden pile of yum! I really enjoyed the fish, shrimp, and fries.

Maureen O.

Yelp
This is some of the best seafood around, and it's gluten free, too, if you opt for it!! The fish and chips are so luxuriously moist and yet ultra-crispy that it's hard to believe. And the spicy slaw complements it wonderfully, without being too spicy. A delicious meal, and it's not too pricey, either!!

MyCrow R.

Yelp
Love this place! The owner is awesome. The real deal Irishman who knows how to do fish & chips right. And he has an auntie who is celiac - and so offers GF fish & chips, both cooked in a dedicated fryer. Which is to say, it's the one and only fish & chips that I've found so far that's 100% safe for me.

Kyle K.

Yelp
Hours on website and yelp showed as being open. Took Uber to eat lunch, arrived, and was closed. If this happens to you, just go to the taco shop two doors down. Fantastic street tacos!

RiceBowl H.

Yelp
4 of us tried the fried cod and curry cod, along with the loaded fries. The BEST fried fish we've had, hands down. Perfectly crisp breading, tender fish- the coleslaw and salad w sesame dressing were perfect companions. Great neighborhood for a leisurely stroll. Even with our fully happy tummies, a short drive to get to Salt n Straw for dessert made for a perfect evening.

Taylor D.

Yelp
Excellent fish inside the batter. Great selection of flavored/spiced batters. Nice chips. Very good tartar.

Erin M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious fish and chips! The portions of fish are extremely generous for the prices. We also tried the shrimp potstickers which were incredible. Everything that we ate was cooked to perfection. The owner is an amazing guy who has been holding down his business all by himself for the past few months due to staffing shortages. If you're in the area, Batterfish is a MUST!

Prince Yusopov E.

Yelp
These were authentic fish and chips that you would normally get in London. A little greasier and a heavier batter than US style, but still hot, crispy, and delicious. Can't wait until they serve beer on tap.

Jared W.

Yelp
Tacos had about a pinky worth of fish in them. The catfish my wife had was greasy. Not recommended

Megan A.

Yelp
Currently still waiting for my food to come to my table. All the customers who have ordered before me have received their food and I have now been waiting 30 minutes here with with no other orders in the kitchen. At this point the whole staff were chatting in the kitchen, not working on any food. I approached the person who had taken my order to inquire about the status of my fish and chips and they seemed very confused initially. They went to check and it turns out my order "was lost in the system." They then proceeded to "cook" my food. Fast forward 8 minutes later. Turns out they rushed my order and I have undercooked French fries and the flesh of the fried cod is not what I would called moist but more like oddly wet and with a slight off flavor. Overall everything was under seasoned. Also, the tarter sauce was unlike any tarter sauce I have had. Very watery in consistency with not relish but a slight bit of dill. Never had tarter sauce like that and it was just bareably edible but I was trying to give flavor to my fish and chips. Only thing really saving the meal is malt vinegar. The person on staff who I had been interacting with did offer a free fish taco that was what he told me a misorder. I declined as I am sure a left over fish taco that would be spending hours in my fridge as a I wait to digest the hot food I am dining in with would be disgusting. Soggy cold breaded fried fish soaking/marinating in salsa does not sound appetizing at all. Not sure what the hype is about. Would not recommend. Don't believe the hype. Can't believe I wasted $20+ here.

Ted O.

Yelp
Maybe out of business. Closed during posted lunch hours. Phone number not accepting calls. I watched half a dozen people walk up and try the locked doors.

James S.

Yelp
Some of the best fish and chips I've had! The owner is such a cool guy, he does everything himself due to understaffing but he doesn't sacrifice on taste, nor service! My party of 6 were all 100% blown away by how great everything! The owner is from Ireland and really knows his stuff! He's got 6 repeat customers with us for sure!
