Battersby Will Close This December After 7 Years in Cobble Hill - Eater NY

"New American tasting menu restaurant Battersby will close on December 31 after close to seven years in Cobble Hill. Chef-owners Walker Stern and Joe Ogrodnek point to an expiring lease and slowing business as the catalysts for the decision — which has made the once-white-hot restaurant “just not viable anymore,” an employee said in an email. A final service on New Year’s Eve will usher the restaurant out in a celebratory way. Stern has no plans right now, while Ogrodnek earlier this year announced plans to lead the ground-floor restaurant at upcoming Lower East Side hotel Sister City. Battersby opened in Cobble Hill in 2011, landing on Bon Appetit’s 10 best new restaurants in America list within its first year. That success propelled the restaurant into a hot destination, spurring an expansion and cookbook — and a second, but now-closed restaurant, Dover, from the team. The food at Battersby ranged from dishes such as whole wheat strozzapretti with squash, brussels sprouts, and brown butter to bomba rice with duck confit, octopus, chorizo, and piquillos, changing frequently on the five-course, now-$75 tasting menu." - Stefanie Tuder

Small restaurant, but it was pretty empty on a weekday night so no issues getting a table. The food and service I found to be top notch. All our dishes were creative, with a nice balance of different flavors and textures. Everything very well cooked. The fried bread that they gave out was unique and I loved it. It is a small menu, however, so do be prepared for that.

Did the tasting menu here. Started out strong with some delicious amuse buse and appetizers. Excellent preparation of seasonal vegetables. But a couple of courses, including the main meat, just weren't that good. Dessert was delicious again. We enjoyed our cocktails. Sitting outside in the garden was a nice setting, but the tables were too close together and we felt like we were sort of awkwardly not talking to the couples on our left and right. Our main server spoke in incredibly low tones and it was sometimes difficult to hear his description of a dish. The overall pacing of the meal didn't feel right (and we heard a neighbouring couple discuss the same concern). Given the price point, I was surprised by my disappointment.

Had the tasting menu in the pleasant back garden. Service was slightly snooty but very efficient and capable. I loved several of the items we were brought. Wild striped bass was excellent and the lamb was as well. Others didn't work quite so well. Dessert was fabulous, involving a variety of flavors with melon, cucumber and a drizzle of a spicy yogurt dressing. Overall I recommend and would return.

Great concept, you can order a la carte or get a set menu following the chef's whims. They tease you could get something off menu. The food is generally good, but I don't always enjoy everything equally. I love to sit on the bar and see the cooks work. I've had dinner here alone a couple times and felt that the service is aloof; I don't normally mind it, but for some reason here it stands out to me.

Came here for a celebratory dinner and enjoyed the dinner. We went a la carte and ordered the crispy kale salad, the mushroom truffle special, the fettuccine with crab and the golden rice with rabbit. Everything was great except for the entree of golden rice and rabbit sausage. It was almost inedible, randomly sweet and not worth the $28 dollar price tag.

Great cocktails, food very good but tasting + wine tasting overpriced

Had the tasting menu and loved everything! It was one of the best restaurant experiences I've had in Brooklyn. My only negative was that even though we made a reservation, we were seated right in front of the door on a cold night. Definitely ask for a table away from the door of its winter.

Absolutely fantastic eating experience. Everything was great. Every course was a surprise. Served with a wink and flavors that excited the palate in unique ways. Seemingly simple ingredients are blended by Battersby to transform simple to complex. Well done. I will be back for my next special occasion.
