Celebrate International Chardonnay Day at These San Diego Spots | Eater

"Family-friendly Bay Hill Tavern is a fun local favorite that does all your favorite comfort food like pizzas and burgers alongside tavern-style New American dishes. Salmon and chardonnay is a classic pairing, and Bay Hill has a trio of great choices — as an add-on to a salad, in a blackened salmon sandwich on a brioche bun, or citrus salmon with ancient grains, blood oranges, grilled fennel salad and tangerine butter sauce. Check out the big, open air back patio, where you can watch a game or the sunset over the ocean." - Mary Beth Abate

Everything was nice, service was great, the drinks and food were spot on great! You can actually talk to each other and the vibe was great for families and people with their dogs.

We came here with friends and their young kids after hearing about it for awhile. The food and drink selection is fantastic, especially the Short Rib Tacos and Chocolate Chip Cookie Skillet. The weather was great so we were able to sit outside and enjoy the view.

Came in for the first time excited to try a new spot. Instead of having the basics like silverware, napkins, we had to find some, when they came out with a drink spilled it , and then passed that spilled drink over with a very sticky glass stem and base… no napkins were offered. Later, Kayla was our waitress and seemed to forget she was waiting on our table. Multiple times we were left wondering when she might appear again. A simple Soda ordered before we placed our meal order, didn’t arrive until we were almost all done with the meal itself. She was reminded twice while taking other alcoholic drinks, which came out immediately. At the time of payment, she took our card, and then came back to the table to tell us whenever we were ready she could take payment at the table. We had to remind her she already had our card. Service was bad tonight, food was okay, and alcoholic drinks were alright. Food prices along with drinks didn’t seem overpriced, and most of the things we received did taste good.

Google
4 stars due to SMALL portion size for price paid. However - DELICIOUS calamari. So good. Is the best calamari I’ve had in San Diego. The ratio of meat to breading is awesome. Crunchy breading, succulent calamari. 10/10 on taste scale. On price per calamari scale? Not good. 12 pieces of calamari, two of which were mini calamari pieces for $16.50+tax+tip. Every calamari piece was more than $1. Oof. Really good though. But beware of portions here. Also - not a load of parking. There’s a huge amount of parking reserved for pickup and valet. Everyone else has to fight for the small lot out front, then has to brave across the street. Really nice inside! AC is on. Super clean.

This place is awesome. We had a group of about 30 people. They sat us outside and put us at 2 large picnic tables. We were there at sunset and you can see the ocean and sun setting from the patio. It’s dog friendly and there are lots of food options. The service was great! The only real challenge was that they won’t split the bill for such a large party. So we had to figure that out. I would definitely recommend this place for a large group or party. They were able to accommodate us with very short notice. They even show sports games out on the patio.

Google
Food is good, great beers, good amount of TVs some seating is in awkward places for a view but not too bad. Highly recommend the grilled chicken sandwich. Fries could use a bit more flavor.

Google
I attempted twice to go here before, but they closed earlier than their posted business hours. So I was finally able to make it in, and it was an utter disappointment. I asked for a strawberry mojito, and it had no mint in it, and I don't think they put liquor in it as it was easy to drink and mostly tasted the club soda. The banana peanut butter sandwich was overpriced and was extremely dry. It so dry we needed a glass of milk which they charge $3 for and was small. It took them a while to greet us and give us our food in drinks. It's easily 25 minutes for 3 items, and we're not busy or understaffed. As the staff took shots before getting our order. You can see in the second to the last picture. Take your business somewhere else. High Dive, Cordova, or Side Car. Check my reviews on them.

Google
What makes a place great? To me, it's a combination of food, service, and price. We love this place so much that we came here for lunch and went back for dinner in a day. We had steak melt and wings for lunch. At the same night, we ordered fried chicken sandwich, Ruben sandwich, burger patty with rice (for our 🐕), and beers. Food were flavorful, service was friendly, and price was fair. And their beer selections were top notch! They have both indoor and outdoor dining area, which is great for people with pets. I can't wait to go back to SD to visit it again!

Yelp
Nice variety Great service Loved the picnic tables out back with a view Friendly comfortable vibe!

Yelp
Great spot to watch a game or have a fun dinner with friends. Service was good and quick. We ordered a flatbread meat, lovers pizza and it was very tasty with a very thin crust. Their garlic truffle fries are also excellent. They also have an extensive bar and are known for their special cucumber Margarita. There's plenty of parking in the front and complementary valet parking on the busier days. They had the UFC fight on when I was there so for days that that is an option, many people count on this place to watch the fight. You can easily see the TVs from most tables.

Yelp
Local tavern with food that hasn't disappointed us yet and I'm pretty sure never will. We've (boyfriend, myself and his parents) been here three different times and all three times the food was delicious. The service was great, Jenna was super sweet and kind. Thus place is pretty laid back as a tavern should be in my opinion. We ordered the beets by bay salad, the fancy pants burger and their slow-braised short ribs and all I gotta say is we left happy & full. This place has been a go to place every time my boyfriend's parents are in town.

Yelp
Solid bar with good selection of beer and food options. Came here for trivia night and had so much fun! They have indoor and outdoor seating with heat lamps and TVs out on the patio as well. Lots of big picnic tables for big groups. Service was super friendly, and our server amazingly kept track of most of the patio! Prices were average for what things cost these days. Parking is limited, but you can park across the street at the larger Sprouts parking lot. They give away some pretty cool stuff for trivia, these little bonuses add to the fun!

Yelp
From valet, to check-in, sitting down, taking my order, checking up on me, and closing out my check, Bay Hill Tavern hit all its marks. I came here to watch some baseball, and even though it was busy, I was able to sit at the bar after a kind gentleman let me know he was leaving and offered his seat. All I had to do was nod and say what's up for one of the bartenders to acknowledge me, and we were set for the night. I got my iced tea, put in my order, enjoyed the game, and appreciated the food. I just moved to the area, so.I drove out a bit without using yelp and decided to just see what maps would give me. Every member of the staff was just awesome, and I'd say that Bay Hill Tavern exemplifies the warmth of the city that I read about after I moved here. This was probably one of the best experiences I've had since relocating. Thanks Bay Hill Tavern!

Yelp
I wish this spot was in my neighborhood. Amazing experience. Considered giving it a 4 (4.5 would be great) and info why at the end. Nusse was our server and she was spot on with water and drinks. The guy who sat us was quick to get the heaters going since we needed to be in the back porch for our dog (which is a great spot for kids too). Upscale-ish bar, with plenty of seating and tv's galore (outside too). The menu is affordably priced, especially for the quality. From the fish to the pizza with gluten-free crust to an amazing burger, we were stoked. Came out on time, with minor modifications incorporated. Nothing went wrong, but as others have noted, there's a valet now. While free, it's somewhat annoying if you're with kids or a doggo. You'd rather take your time unloading everyone rather than feel rushed, especially since the parking spots aren't very far from the entry. We will be back!

Yelp
I can't say enough good things about Bay Hill Tavern They're not just pet-friendly--they actually have a PET FOOD menu! How cute is that?! Their food is consistently excellent, and the beer selection is top-notch, with plenty of options to choose from. I've been here about three times, but this was the first time I brought my baby, and the experience was just too cute not to share. If you love great food and want to spoil your furry friend, Bay Hill Tavern is the place to be!

Yelp
Food is always great here! Got the dirty fries and blackened salmon burger. Get the burger medium rare and you will love! A fav local neighborhood spot

Yelp
Great little place! Bigger than it looks from the outside, with a large dog-friendly patio out back. Hubby had the BHT Philly cheesesteak and I had the truffle fried chicken sandwich. Both super tasty. The chicken was juicy, and the breading was light and crispy, not too heavy. The truffle fries were great. Having meal options for the dogs was definitely a nice touch! Fast, friendly service, kept the drinks coming! We were happy to see they had the UFC fights on too!

Yelp
The food here was incredible, especially the pizzas!! Our server Nusee M was so on top of everything. She was super efficient and was recommending great options. The service was 10/10 and I will definitely be back.

Yelp
Bay Hill Tavern is a great spot whether you're catching a game, playing trivia, or just grabbing lunch. My friend and I went there for a Padres game, and it was a blast! The food is solid, and the service is fast, so you won't miss a beat. Plus, they have plenty of drink options to keep you refreshed. It's got that typical sports bar feel with a nice touch of local San Diego vibes, making it a great hangout. The only knock was the calamari--it was a little thin on pieces for the price. Also, parking can be a bit difficult, so plan ahead. But overall, it's a nice staple in Bay Park, and I'll definitely be back for more fun times!

Yelp
I wish I liked this place better, because ambiance was great. Service was great. Drinks were great, as to be expected for a bar establishment. But their food was underwhelming... and the kicker, found a twist-tie in my food the next day. :/
google avatar

Savannah B.

Yelp
Cute neighborhood bar, a bit on the pricier for the quality of food. Drinks are great- I like the Bay Hill Pharma when I'm feeling I want a tropical vibe (it's like a pina colada but better) or "Working Class" (I'm a sucker for mezcal). We ordered wings: half lemon pepper and half whiskey bbq. The lemon pepper took the win as the bbq was a little too saucy for me. I also ordered the short rib tacos that were ehhh okay. Didn't bother taking a photo but the short rib was small in quantity and lacked flavor overall. Parking is extremely limited and even worse with all the construction going on in the neighborhood so plan to park across the street in the Sprouts parking lot. Wish this place had better prices for it being such an adorable neighborhood bar.

Yelp
Yep this place is that good. Prices are super good. Perfect drinks and tons of options. To top it off super good fancy cocktails and breakfast drinks $8-10 before 2 pm on Sat and Sun. We had the wings (some of the best I've ever had), salad and the Reuben with truffle fries. All super amazing and generous portions! We came in for brunch today and sat at the bar. I haven't had good service in a long time. Our bartender was super friendly and thought of everything. All the food was awesome and great drinks. Will definitely be back and highly recommend this spot. We found free parking without problem. Only recommendation I have is for the owner is the valet $6 option is a little odd. Now that I've been I would valet for $6 no problem knowing how good it is. But if I was a new customer it would be a deterrent. I would recommend making the valet free or don't have it.

Yelp
Bay Hill is our favorite local hang. The food is great and the staff is even better!!!!

Yelp
Love this place so much! Great food, nice selection of beer on tap, food comes out QUICK, and service is spot on. -- Can't believe I thought it was just a bar all these years as I glanced over turning left to go down Clairemont drive. I guess back in the day it was...I do recall the fancy new sign and remodel that happened and I guess it was changed up in 2019. A wonderful neighborhood bar & restaurant. The food is amazing! This is definitely a situation where advertising is worth it, as we found out they serve food from an ad they put in the Get1Free magazine thats direct-mailed. Cashed in for a free "big ol' pretzel" with that offer (free with purchase) and tried out their fried chicken sandwich. Both are delicious. Ive had a lot of lackluster pretzel apps and this one is a winner. The fried chicken sandwich (this is the traditional one Im speaking of, not the truffle honey), is soo soo good. We took our servers rec on adding pepper jack to it. We have been on a kick for these kinds of sandwiches they are just perfection with the dill pickles. We also got the mushroom and caramelized onion pizza because our eyes were much bigger than stomach and ended up taking the entire pizza to go. Fantastic as reheated pizza and definitely something I would like to order to-go in the future. Our server was probably one of the top servers I've had in my lifetime. I would assume she is on maternity leave now (our 1st visit was a few months ago and she looked ready to pop!). She had this gift of just "knowing" what her customers wanted as we never indicated but definitely planned to split the chicken sandwich and it came out - not only cut in half, but on separate plates with the fries split as well. We were like, "how did you know!?" and she just kinda shrugged. Wish I remembered her name but if management is reading this I'm sure you will know who she is :) We came back yesterday for a meet-up with some friends to take advantage of happy hour (runs to 6:15PM and rare that places even have HH anymore post-covid). All drinks $2 off, and I believe it was $3 off all apps. No restrictions at all! Sat in the back patio which is lovely and the best place to sit if you wanna have a convo (bit loud inside). We got the pretzel again, the braised short rib tacos, and the tecolote salad (love the local canyon naming!!). Everything was delicious and once again came out ridiculously fast for being busy happy hour time. Fr drinks, I had the Societe Coachman session IPA (very good, love this brewery) and the Mother Earth Cali Creamin on nitro (always great when places have that one on Nitro). This is just simply a solid place and my new-go suggestion for meet-ups. Definitely recommend you checking out!

Yelp
The food was amazing especially the chimichanga was the best thing I've ever had. The service was mid the watrice was hauk tuahing on my food.
google avatar

Tammy D.

Yelp
A quick bite before attending the Gulls game we ate outside which was nice. It was warm in the sun. It felt good. We each got something different: pastrami sandwich, chicken sandwich, salmon sandwich, and hummus plate. We enjoyed our food, service was great. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was due to the pricing to switch out the fries to a salad was three dollars more and to alter the fries it was $3+ Regular fries are shoestring and just ok.

Yelp
The employees are fantastic. Very personable and quite funny. My husband really enjoys the cute little blonde gals that flirt their way around the restaurant. I personally really like the laid back male who we seem to get every Tuesday during happy hour. I am Pescatarian so the menu is limited for me, but my personal favorite is the Potato Taco. Second, only to the Potato Taco at Pedro's Tacos in San Clemente. Sadly the chance of getting this tasty treat is close to none because they only offer it as rare special on Taco Tuesdays. I have been coming here for about a year now, and it has only made one appearance in that time. But I keep the faith... I call almost every Tuesday to ask if the star of the show will be present and I'm usually disappointed. So I typically end up with my second favorite Bayhill Tavern menu items which are Working Man's Cauliflower (a regular menu item) or the Fish Tacos which are only available on Tuesdays. They do offer a Mushroom Taco for those who don't eat meat, but it's a little too saucy for us. They offer a decent pour on alcoholic beverages and my husband says that the beer options are good. A fifth star could easily be bought from me with a potato taco!
google avatar

Scott N.

Yelp
Decent vibe but something's off...weird layout and the hostess stand doesn't make a good first contact. I had the Philly cheesesteak, it was pretty bad. Even though I took more than half of it home, I ended up throwing it away over eating it.
google avatar

Valerie M.

Yelp
Yummy drinks and super cool servers. Large back patio where you can hop onto a picnic table. The best largest pretzel comes with this insane dip. Cheese dip I think. Tasty wings with a few flavor choices. The burgers are fantastic too. My son's favorite is the pan cookie with ice cream. The short rib tacos are fabulous too. Oh and the cauliflower app is fantastic. A tad sweet and spicy. The sauce is awesome. Great little spot.

Yelp
My fiancé and I came here for brunch during Sunday football and had a great time. The host was super nice and welcoming, and same with our server! All of the TV's were playing football and it genuinely seemed like the everyone in the place was having a great time. To be totally honest, the first couple times we came here when they opened...we weren't huge fans. But like a fine wine, they've gotten better with age! The food and drinks are always good and I love the seasonal specials. Today I had the açaí bowl and it was SO good. The portion was good and the açaí wasn't too sweet. I opted to add a scoop peanut butter to add a little protein and it was definitely the move! My fiancé had the Reuben and finished it and finished my açaí bowl haha. We were both stoked. Parking can be a kind of a pain but there are usually spots down the hill or across the street toward the residential area. I definitely recommend coming here with a group or even just yourself and sit at the bar. Also love that they serve brunch on the weekends until 2pm! Which means the sleepy heads and those who had a long night can still make it!
google avatar

Nadia G.

Yelp
Nice restaurant. Waiter was excellent. Food was good. I found the Reuben to be a bit too mouth burning
google avatar

Melanie G.

Yelp
Roasted mushroom tacos were so good! Everyone loved their meals and there was a fun sports bar vibe. South Norte lager was yummy too.
google avatar

Taylor C.

Yelp
Bay hill Tavern is a great neighborhood staple. It is a great spot to meet up for a date or group of friends. The bar area has a bunch of TVs to watch sports games and they have a spacious back patio area to enjoy the outdoors during our warm months. They also have trivia on wednesdays that is very popular so arrive early! They have good food! The appetizers are great shareable items. I love the giant pretzel and cauliflower. The beet salad is probably my favorite thing on the menu. I wouldn't say I'm a huge beet lover but they do it right in this salad.
google avatar

Mike V.

Yelp
Friends and I were looking for a brunch place that wasn't packed to the brim on a Sunday. Service was great, food was great. I had the chilaquiles. Hard for me to find good chilaquiles but I loved the verde sauce they used. Short rib was a plus. Highly recommend.
google avatar

David M.

Yelp
Other than noise it was great. Food and service fine. Its a bar! (85 words is ridiculous, blah, blah, blah...).
google avatar

Samantha M.

Yelp
The food here is great!! The steak melt is DELICIOUS, and make sure to save room for the cookie skillet! They also have a variety of burgers and flatbreads to pick from. Trivia on Wednesday nights get packed here do make sure to grab a table ahead of time, they do not do reservations. Parking lot is super small, but plenty of parking across the street- just FYI. Servers are nice, prompt and welcoming. I've sat outside both times I checked this place out and enjoyed it, if it happened to be cold- they do have plenty of heaters as well that work great!
google avatar

Madeleine K.

Yelp
I wish they'd bring trivia back, but otherwise this place's post-covid glow-up has been a huge success. The menu now has excellent Mediterranean food (though I'd love a regular salad option) and the new wood paneled bar is beautiful. Come here if you're looking for a spot full of local regulars with allll of the sports games on. Service is very friendly.
google avatar

Kathy Q.

Yelp
Another great meal, and excellent service! They were very busy on Sunday at 1 pm. Parking was difficult. We need to stop by more often.
google avatar

Nadia R.

Yelp
This is our staple spot in clairemont. We will pop over here after church on Sundays, to meet up with friends who have kids to let the kids run around while we have drinks, or if we can't be bothered to make food and want a hearty salad to go. The outdoor space is perfect for kids. Big tables and you can definitely get together with a group of friends and let your kids run around. The games are always playing so perfect for my husband if he wants to watch a game. The service is always 10/10. The food is always 10/10. We love their burgers and their salads. The toddler loves the salmon and the chicken tenders. Their beers on tap are always delicious. Can't say enough good things about this place.
google avatar

Kandy F.

Yelp
A friend took us to Bay Hill Tavern for lunch. It's a nice place to hang out with family and friends. They even have spacious outdoor patio seating as well. This place doesn't have much for a parking lot. If you cannot find a spot, I suggest parking across the street. We were all curious on their fried cauliflower on their appetizer section. It's called, "Working Class Cauliflower". Fried cauliflower florets tossed in a sweet and spicy sauce with sesame seeds & green onions. It's served with white rice. It was DELICIOUS!!! I cannot wait to get this again and try their other menu items. Overall, great place to eat and hang out. If you're a sports fan, BONUS points. The people working were super nice and helpful. The place was clean. The very back of the building has a nice view. We were getting in our car when I say the water. It must be very beautiful when the sun is going down.

Amanda G.

Yelp
This place has great food and great service! So definitely recommend! However the parking sucks and the door guy is rude. Side Piece next door is awesome too! Dart board, pool tables, juke box, nice bartenders and $10 for a pretty decent beer and shot! Great neighborhood bar! Recommended!
google avatar

Jenn D.

Yelp
Great food! Super comfortable atmosphere! The bartender was so friendly and helpful. Nice assortment of beer on tap. We love to go here for food and a beer after playing a round of golf at Tecolote
google avatar

Yelp
The food was amazing. The service was amazing. The ambiance was okay.thair hamburger was amazing

Yelp
We love Bay hill tavern. Everything we ever order is delicious. The service is outstanding as well . I highly recommend their pretzel with cheese , their Brussel sprout dish, and there chicken bacon pizza . It's so delicious. We can't wait to go back. They are dog friendly so we might have to bring our dog Lily .
google avatar

Maria R.

Yelp
I wanna start with Jeff the owner and Jen the manager does a wonderful job at making sure the place not only has good food, but great customer service. I highly recommend the avocado toast!!! It is to die for and pair it with I woke up like this for a drink that will lift your spirits! Patio area is real nice and pet friendly. Bday cookie is a plus to anyone celebrating a bday with friends and family. It is very clean and convenient location.
google avatar

Brianne N.

Yelp
Pretty good vibes. A little on the pricey side. Nice selection of drinks. Excellent service. I came for happy hour. $3 off apps and $2 of drinks. Not bad. Would not recommend the Sriracha lemon pepper wings. The habanero was not too hot and was pretty good.
google avatar

Robb G.

Yelp
Our first stop off the plane and it did not disappoint. Came recommended by our Air BnB host. Great service and food. We will probably go back before our stay ends.
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
Food, service, and ambiance are all very nice. Very open and airy. You can eat on the patio or inside and still catch a nice breeze. Food was very good. Service was attentive, but not overbearing. Just right. Not much parking in front, but plenty in back.
google avatar

Catalina G.

Yelp
This restaurant is very nice. The food is great. I've had multiple dishes here and they're always delicious. The calamari is great, the nachos & the wings. The ambiance is nice and chill. There are lots of tvs to watch sports games. The server was amazing she came and checked on us multiple times and filled our waters. The food came out within a good time frame. There's parking out back which is great.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Love this spot for a good burger and fries! Food is always delicious with friendly service. They have good indoor and outdoor seating options. The outdoor picnic table style seating is especially great for summertime. Their parking lot is a bit small for busier nights though so parking can be tricky sometimes. It's a good spot to watch UFC fights and sports also, lots of TVS!
google avatar

Uncle M.

Yelp
The atmosphere was nice. The service was great. The food tasted great...at first. But after eating the fish n chips, I did not feel well. I think it was the Malt Vinegar. It might have been bad. Since then, I've sworn off Fish n Chips. So what I'm trying to say is SKIP THE FISH N CHIPS.
google avatar

Brad G.

Yelp
Great spot, bummed to see front end staff who cannot manage when it's busy. Came in...three of us... at 7:16 PM and yet the place isn't super busy but busy (if that makes sense..no line). Front staff was frustrated and showed it. However, the server was amazing! Food as always was incredible! We supported this place big time as did the community when they opened and during Covid but one cannot have a front staff that makes one feel like they should go somewhere else. I hope this fixes itself or I am concerned the negative perception will cause a short lifespan. Still going to be one of our spots but will stay to coming in during the day shift when they are not busy. For now it's average but is easy a five star during the day! Lots of parking Amazing food Huge inside and outside seating Lots for options to food And clean bathrooms
google avatar

Mel M.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot in Bay Ho with yummy drinks and bar food. Parking is a bit of a challenge but everything else is perfect. Their working class cauliflower is solid and their cocktails are reasonably priced. They have plenty of TVs at the bar and are kid friendly so definitely a good place to catch a football game!

Scott N.

Yelp
Always enjoyed this spot. We've been coming here ever since it opened. The food rarely blows your mind, but it is always solid. We enjoy bringing our dog and relaxing on the back patio with drinks and reliable food. One of the only places with a good Monte Cristo. Normally would rate at 4 stars, except for our latest experience. Parking here has always been a minor hassle, but nothing too crazy. Today we pulled up and all the normal self parking spots were blocked off for valet parking! Valet?!? WTF? Why am I paying you $6 to park my car where I normally park it. So lame. Hope this gets fixed soon.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch and left happy. A little expensive for common work lunch but the food was delicious. Good seating area and nice sized full bar. I ordered a burgener bbq burger cooked medium. It was definitely a tasty burger. I added the garlic fries to spice it up. They were good but non gagliones garlic fries. Burger comes with bacon and crispy onion strings which make it good. Parking is a little tight but you can always park in the center across the street if it's full. They also have like outdoor bar style seats which are cool. I'm always skeptical of a place that also does pizza but you never know it could be good.

Yelp
So I've been going now for a few years. I wanted to give a review after really witnessing the place. I love the fact that patio is dog friendly and they have big TVs outside to watch sports. Let's start with the food. I've always had good meals there. The nachos are some of the best in town not cheap bar quality but gourmet. Fish and chips and the Reuben sandwich are still my favorites as are the pizza and wings. The service is usually great. The staff seems really great at their job always smiling asking if they can bring a dog bowl of water for my girl. The ambience is great, very modern looking and great lighting. Today I went for Sunday brunch and ordered the Chilaquiles with chicken apples sausage. It was absolutely delicious. The tortilla chips were still crunchy and not soggy like you get it some places. Thanks Bayhill Tavern for all the great meals, you are gem in our town.
