Beach Wolf Restaurant Opens at Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas | Eater San Diego

"For the first time in 15 years, there is freshly-made hot food coming out of the Moonlight State Beach boardwalk concessions stand in Encinitas — now operated as Beach Wolf by chefs David Volk and Justin Lewis, the culinary team who helped launch Bull Taco at Cardiff’s San Elijo State Beach in 2008. The duo took over the stand during the pandemic and moved from cooking breakfast sandwiches to an expanded all-day breakfast menu that includes Belgian waffles, smoked salmon avocado toast, and breakfast tacos stuffed with 24-hour braised barbacoa. The lunch and sunset offerings cover salads, pulled pork sandwiches and TJ-style hot dogs, plus frequent specials such as poke, sashimi, oysters and a fish of the day. On Friday nights they serve tonkotsu ramen as well as dishes like steamed mussels and mushroom and black truffle dumplings from Rooster Ramen, a pop-up the chef ran and still intends to open as a full restaurant. Operating year-round except on rainy days, Beach Wolf will extend evening hours in summer and — in addition to renting surfboards, beach umbrellas and chairs and selling firewood for bonfire pits — offers custom grill packages that provide all the food and utensils for a beachside cookout." - Candice Woo

Amazing beach dining outdoor views on the beach!! Free parking lot above it, with lots of street parking too. Loved their food menu. Order at the cashier, and eat on the beach. There's plenty of concrete picnic tables off the sand and on the sand. Overall, love that we can dine on the sand like that! Restrooms are also very clean. I'm definitely bookmarking this beach to visit again. I bet it's packed on the weekends and such. Pork plate! The pork was overly saucy but still a great deal, and not bad. Our friend liked his curry tacos too. We visited on a Wednesday 12pmish in mid Oct 65F weather, on the way toward East SD. It was empty, amazing scenery, lots of free parking and seating. Good amount of surfers in the water, and people setup on the sand.

The Potato Curry Tacos are delicious! I said to hold the queso blanco, and I was offered avocado instead to make the tacos vegan. I LOVE that I didn’t even have to ask. I will be back for these whenever I go to Moonlight Beach. For breakfast they also have an avocado toast that looks pretty special - but hold the feta if you want it animal-free.

Nice spot that offers delicious tacos next to the Pacific Ocean!! Loved the slow braised barbacoa tacos - lots of flavorful meat and a decent amount of fresh avocado. Yellow curry potato tacos were great too! The two tacos were a good and satisfying meal. I wish they would be a bit cheaper than $15-16 for a pair of tacos. But worth it for the quality and amazing location ❤️

We ordered 3 bowls (poke bowl, pulled pork, and braised beef barbacoa). All 3 were delicious. We can't wait to come back and try more. The line can get long, but it moves.

Carnitas tacos were perfectly created. They were flavorful and ingredients were combined well. The tortillas tasted home made. My husband loved his wolf dog. The service was excellent! The employee taking the order was very polite and on task. He took his job seriously. Very pleasant experience!

The operator of this restaurant is one of the coolest people. Always friendly and accommodating. And that’s not even mentioning the quality of the food which is AMAZING. The wolf dog is a truly elevated hot dog which makes this beach experience just that much better. Pulled pork, bacon and other toppings just hit the spot. Love this place. Try it out.

Amazing take out stand right on Moonlight beach! We had breakfast and had some delicious smoked salmon and garden avocado toasts, as well as a bacon egg and cheese. Not too long to wait and plenty of dog friendly seating on the beach. Absolutely beautiful views. Highly recommend a visit!

I ended up getting tacos here while at the beach. I have to admit my expectations weren't high but I was pleasantly surprised. I took that last bite and was sad that it was over. Worth checking out. If you are from out of town like I am and from a region with poor quality tacos you likely will be blown away. Locals might thinks it is just another good option.

I get tacos and an iced coffee for lunch any time I can from Beach Wolf. Their tacos are some of the best of the best!!! Truly flavorful and delicious. The curried potato taco is my favorite, but the shrimp tacos and breakfast tacos are also phenomenal. Don't miss this amazing beach shack, it's really excellent food and lovely service every time.

A great option for coffee or hot chocolate, even ice cream or shaved ice when at the beach. Prices are reasonable and service is fast. They offer tacos as well but I didn't give it a try this go around. Located next to the restrooms, it can't be missed.

This review is long overdue, I meant to write this a while ago. This was the first place in Encinitas. I went to go eat out by myself, and I must say I'm genuinely taken aback by the quality of the food here, I don't know her name we'll just call her "Rey" cause she told me that was her favorite Star Wars character she is often the person who helps me when I come here, she wasn't here today so I wanna give her a shout out. The guy who made my food today, His name is Tayden, keep up the quality man.

Do you want to sit on the beach and eat tacos? Of course ya do!! This slammin' joint right on moonlight beach will give you exactly what you want, the dankest, belly bumping, barbacoa tacos west of B street! Got mine with a hot cocoa and whipped cream for a perfect winter lunch on these frigid 60° SD days. Seriously a hole in the wall place that's wayyyyy too good not to spread the word around for. So you know taco stand, and city taco, and Roberto's and the rest... But none of them are Literally on the beach. They have an awesome menu for lots of things that aren't tacos too, like salads breakfast Sammy's and waffles! So talk yourself on a walk on down to Beach Wolf, and y'all be Howling to all yas friends to get on over there, too! This Food Guy gives it two big guac covered thumbs way up!!

I got the beach wolf dog and it was the best hot dog I have ever had. I came with a group. We all ordered different things and everyone loved what they got. No matter what you order here, you can't go wrong! The owner is very friendly and accommodating as well!

If I could leave more stars, I would. I hired Justin and his team for my husband's surprise birthday bonfire party. Justin worked within my budget, guided me in hosting an outdoor party, and made an incredible meal that everyone enjoyed. We were able to accomidate all dietary restrictions and the guests were super impressed with how great the food was. He even sent everyone home with to-go boxes. I would hire Beach Wolf for events moving forward. Incredible experience. Highly recommend his homemade macaroni salad... we are all still talking about it.

Outstanding food at an outstanding location! Beach Wolf sandwich for the win! Yes, it's Moonlight Beach concession stand but you will be amazed with the quality of the food! Not your ordinary beach concession! Flavors are unbelievable! And the coffee is top quality too (so says my husband who is a coffee connoisseur)! And with the ocean views to enjoy the amazing food, you must go and eat there!

This place is a hidden gem and the best concession stand I've come across. Their tacos are so tasty - high quality meats and ingredients. I go to Moonlight more often now for the food. Be sure to check out the shaved ice too. Prices are way reasonable and service consistently good!

I contacted Justin about rentals for a bridal luncheon I was hosting and he responded Immediately to my questions! He went above and beyond with my needs and was super friendly with an "aim to please" attitude. And the fresh brewed tea was the best! Highly recommend Beach Wolf for any food or rental needs at charming Moonlight Beach!
