"For the first time in 15 years, there is freshly-made hot food coming out of the Moonlight State Beach boardwalk concessions stand in Encinitas — now operated as Beach Wolf by chefs David Volk and Justin Lewis, the culinary team who helped launch Bull Taco at Cardiff’s San Elijo State Beach in 2008. The duo took over the stand during the pandemic and moved from cooking breakfast sandwiches to an expanded all-day breakfast menu that includes Belgian waffles, smoked salmon avocado toast, and breakfast tacos stuffed with 24-hour braised barbacoa. The lunch and sunset offerings cover salads, pulled pork sandwiches and TJ-style hot dogs, plus frequent specials such as poke, sashimi, oysters and a fish of the day. On Friday nights they serve tonkotsu ramen as well as dishes like steamed mussels and mushroom and black truffle dumplings from Rooster Ramen, a pop-up the chef ran and still intends to open as a full restaurant. Operating year-round except on rainy days, Beach Wolf will extend evening hours in summer and — in addition to renting surfboards, beach umbrellas and chairs and selling firewood for bonfire pits — offers custom grill packages that provide all the food and utensils for a beachside cookout." - Candice Woo
