LA Craft Beer Star Beachwood Brewing Forges a Bold New Path - Eater LA

"Southern California craft beer staple Beachwood Brewing is adding to its fleet of spaces, opening the new Beachwood Brewing & Distilling on Saturday, August 20. The new 24-tap tasting room and spirits distillery sits in the Bixby Knolls area of Long Beach at 3630 Atlantic Avenue, housed inside the former location of the now-shuttered Liberation Brewing. Really though, this new distillery space is just one part of a big new plan to expand beyond beer for Beachwood. The group’s new tasting room will offer small-batch limited craft beers brewed on site, as well as Lambic-style brews from the Beachwood Blendery, and west coast IPA favorites from the company’s existing brewing facility in Huntington Beach. That’s a lot of craft beer for the brew-craving Long Beach area, but it’s the distillery operation that is really raising eyebrows. Once fully operational, it will make Beachwood not only one of just a few distillers in Long Beach, but it also places the operation into an even more elite club of brewers going down the path of craft cocktails." - Matt Miller

Great time. Pin ball machines in the back with parking. Great food and drinks. Must say how much I enjoy the merch. They sell the best glassware. Must come back and buy more merch. Staff is superb.

The winterwood wonderland was awesome! Jacob is fantastic. The drinks are strong and well worth the money…plus many come in a festive cup. The beer, food and games are great all year ‘round but highly recommend coming during the holiday season!

My friend and I wanted to go here for the first time to watch the survivor night showing. We were looking forward to this event until we walked in to the extremely pungent smell of feces. It literally smelled like a dog pound. We immediately walked out as it seemed to be in the whole establishment. No way would we be able to eat or drink in there.

Google
Delicious beer, I got there rice lager in a six pack. Wide variety of beers and cool place to hang out!

Pinball! I go there for pinball, including friendly tournaments every other Thursday. Plenty big enough selection of beer. Beer is everywhere but pinball isn't. (Though check out I Need a Miracle Tickets for hourly/subscription on 20+ pinball machines if you don't already know). Food service is new and a nice addition. Longer hours and willingness to at least serve til closing time is a must. End of night can feel unfriendly in that respect. Patricia's next door has good cheap mexican food and I think Beachwood lets you bring it in, or at least they used to.

Stirred, not shaken. For I am not a sissy boy, like James Bond. Beachwood brews over 25 of their own beers, along with distilling their own rum, gin & vodka. Unfortunately, whiskey is not included. Once I arrived, I was dead set on an Elder Vesper. Created by Ian Fleming as the favorite cocktail for his titular character, James Bond. A boozy beverage, Bond took his "shaken, not stirred". Not me! Stirred, not shaken. Shaking dilutes the cocktail moreso than stirring. Give it to me stiff! Elder Vesper- Beachwood Vodka, Beachwood Citrus Gin, Lillet Blanc, St. Germain Elderflower, Beachwood Orange Bitters. Dry, strong & lovely, this was my first taste of a martini, and I highly enjoyed the bright & crisp cocktail. Chi Chi- Beachwood Vodka, Trader Vic's Macadamia Nut Liqueur, Pineapple Juice, Cream of Coconut, Lime Juice. Yikes! Too sweet! Akin to an ICEE/slushie, I was given half a Tiki mug of this blood sugar spiking concoction, and I'm thankful I only had that much to drink. Beer Sample Flight- I asked if could sample a beer or two, and was graciously provided a flight of four of their popular beers on tap. My favorite being the Gator. Beachwood Wood-Fired House Bread w/ Whipped Ricotta- 48 hour fermented sourdough bread, baked to order and served with whipped ricotta, roasted garlic & soft herbs. Very good! The bread had a substantial pull to it. The whipped ricotta was heavenly, dolloped upon each tear of bread. Quite filling! Gratitude the staff at Beachwood Brewing & Distilling. The hospitable service, expertly crafted cocktails & tantalizing eats afforded a fine evening experiencing a previously unventured culinary destination.

Would give less if I voyld terrible work schedule I do t come late I come at 4 and every day at 430 the entire parking lot is full of busses every Wednesday Thursday and Friday there's no space for parking customers park illegally and block the busses and vans that come to pick up disable people from daycare those people are not the problem but if you seen this every week 3 days of your 5 day schedule you'd think to maybe open the brewery a little later maybe keep it open a little longer but no instead the brewery takes more parking spaces by putting an immobile food trailer back there and wasting half the lot that is theirs and making more parking troubles for customers of both establishments. I've been here for a beer as well it wasn't special at all nothing new just inconvenient as hell and the bartender is too damn cool for anyone that isn't 50+ and dressed like they have money to burn. Terrible space that ruined some of the community I'd rather drink at patricas next door these owners are whack and I have seen them yell at staff publicly. Fix your work schedule no one NEEDS to be drunk before 430 Wed Thurs Friday not worth the hassle costs too much no service to speak of could have served myself in a nicer manner with all the sarcasm I'd give myself it'd still be nicer.

Our favorite brewery moved into our neighborhood 😃 With 24 taps, you are bound to find a few beers or ten you want to try so we are thankful we can walk here. There is also a parking lot in the back if you need to drive over. My husband and I went opening day with our neighbors. The place was packed when we got there, but luckily we were able to get a table. There is plenty of seating at the bar and in the whole brewery. They did a great job with the space and added pinball machines, skeeball, and a shuffleboard in the back. It’s fun for kids and adults. You can also get cans to go and merchandise. Check out their IG for events and music too. The distillery is in the works but there is plenty of great beers to have in the meantime. If you get hungry there are plenty of local restaurants to get food from. Our friend picked up Thunderbolt Pizza while we were there. It hit the spot. Can’t wait for our next visit 🍻

Yelp
I went here for Valentine's Day, we came around 6:30 and we got lucky that there was one space open for us. Hubby and I both got the burgers that were delish and very filling. We did a share a basket of fries. We ate the chips it came with the the burger and it was alright. Brewery also supported a lot of local vendors as well which is a plus, Very cute place for a date night!

Yelp
Learn the difference between differentiation. Sat at two stools from the main bar because the other stools are too uncomfortable due to a back injury. Beertender wanted us to move them because they differentiate the bar from the other tables. Learn customer service and how to accommodate and differentiate. To differentiate is to provide an accommodation. Please note: the 2 stools I took to sit down were extras, if I had to put them back they did not fit at the bar. There was plenty of seating and it was not busy. Beyond disappointed never been treated like this before. For reference other breweries ok with "differentiation".

Yelp
I really miss the originally brewery & bbq location. It was a must stop location for me whenever I was in Long Beach. With that said, this new location is really nice. It's much smaller, but has a more neighborhood pub kinda feel vs the restaurant that just happens to also sell beer vibe of the bbq joint. The employees here are very nice and helpful. I will say I've only ever been on random weekday afternoons when the place wasn't very busy so my customer service was exceptional. I could imagine, however, if this place is busy with one of their events, your experience might differ, though I would imagine the staff should be as friendly & helpful, just maybe drawn more thin than I have experience. I do wish they offered more pre canned beers for sale. As I live about an hour north, I like to stock up whenever I swing by but I also want some variety on my stock. There have been times when they've only had 2 or so varieties in cans. They have more bottle options, but as I often can't drink one of those on my own, I favor the cans. Beachwood is a great brewery and I am always glad to see their successes. This new location is a bit off the beaten track for me, but that's still not enough to make sure I swing by any chance I can.

Yelp
Third time here. Brought sister-in-law this time. Again sat at the bar. I ordered the Love cup. Rum and rum. It was good. Had the bread & fries, that was awesome. Fresh & hot. Sister-in-law had mushroom burger & she said it tested great. I did sliders. One original & the other two were the golden west. All three were great. The service was good again, with friendly bartenders. They played great music that was not overly loud so you could talk to each other.

Yelp
Overall great vibes. The food is classic American style food burgers and fries. The drinks were fine, the only thing is we got the mai tai and it was very ginger forward. There are board games and pinball machines in the back. The parking was street or there are a few spots behind the building.

Yelp
Last time I was at this location (4 years ago), it was Liberation Brewery. Sad to hear that they are no longer in business, but Beachwood Brewing is a nice consolation. I had their mule and it was tasty and gave a good buzz. They have a small lot in the back with a food truck to offer some nibbles during your visit. The gentleman behind the bar was very friendly and informative. The seating is a little awkward as most of the space is taken up by their giant distilling/brewing tanks (I don't know what to call them). They have pinball machines in the back, seating area in the front. Our kids LOVED the game board options that they offered. Although the seating didn't feel as cozy as other breweries my husband and I visited, we had a great time and enjoyed their delicious fries (as did the kids) while we drank.

Yelp
I'm reviewing just the food for this one and I hate to say this, but it kind of sucks. I'm a huge burger girl and rarely find any burger that I can't stand, but the ones here are not it. At all. I got the mushroom burger and it was so insanely greasy, some of the bacon slightly undercooked, and I honestly started to feel a little sick right after. Mushrooms themselves were good, but that was it. My boyfriend got the classic and didn't even eat half before tossing it, just as bad. Also crazy expensive ($16 for a burger without fries) considering it's made in a food truck outside. Doesn't seem that clean. I walked past a worker carrying an open tub of lettuce from the front, through the whole place, to the back. Will not return, would not recommend the food at all. Good pinball machines though!

Yelp
This is a great small brewery. There's beer, food, and mixed drinks. Decor is like any other . Basic but cool! Bartender Enrique was nice. I wasn't able to try out the food but beef and drinks are tasty. Stop by and check it out.

Yelp
Great service, great food... Amazing Beer!!! Plenty of parking both in the back of the brewery + on the street. I ordered the Golden West burger and it was so favorful! The sauce and the jalapeños complimented each other well. My only nitpick would be for the bacon to be crispier! But the service was speedy, so that was a trade off I'd guess I had 3 diff brews: Hef Leppard, Permachill, and the Blonde. The Her was my fave, malty and just a hint of sweet. The Blonde is easy drinking for sure. Permachill was a bit odd tasting for me, and I usually like IPAs, this one had flavor I didn't care for too much The staff is great, helpful and attentive. We wanted to switch one of the games to see Dodgers, super helpful with that. The vibes inside the brewery is super chill, everyone having a great time. I want to get back to try some their rum and gin cocktails too

Yelp
Super excited they opened their "kitchen" and the distillery. Cocktails are perfect for this location. I've always thought their beer was just ok but since they've opened their distillery, it's been nice to have that in the mix. Absolutely love how they rearranged their furniture as well. Much more functional. Bathrooms are always clean and j appreciate the large size of it. Makes it easy with kids.

Yelp
We went to Beachwood to try new menu. Food is delicious albeit messy. I finished my chicken sandwich with a knife & fork as it fell apart in my hands The jalapeño slaw was fresh and so good. My husband enjoyed the Golden West burger. He said it was great. I ordered the Daquiri! Old school and a favorite of mine. It was definitely drinkable, but there was something off with the aroma to me. Love the new layout, tables are nice and their varied artists on walls are always fun to check out. There is usually a sports game in as well.

Yelp
Seen this place many times but never stopped because the boyfriend and I are not really beer drinkers. Kept seeing their new cocktails advertised so we decided to stop by and try them out. They have a nice variety of rum drinks and the option to get them in these really cool coach souvenir cups. We also had an order of their wings which were amazing so big and meaty love them will definitely come back for more appetizers because we did see some other things that we wanted to try. You walk in and the space is very open with lots of places to hang out. They also have arcade games in the back if you wanna, have a little fun. Will be back to lounge and relax with the beer.

Yelp
We went to celebrate my son's birthday on Sunday, Feb. 23. Although the food was very good, the service was pretty bad. You have to go to the counter to place all orders, and the staff there seemed completely clueless, as well as unfriendly. I asked for salt and pepper and they told me they didn't have any at the counter and that it would have to come from the food truck (in the alley behind the restaurant). I just stared at the two people to whom I made the request and they finally said they would get it for me. The cocktail that I had was tasty but filled with so much finely chopped ice that there was hardly anything left to drink. Overall, the negative of bad service outweighed the positives. We would not go back.
google avatar

Mel G.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday night and it was very busy. I guess they have live music at 7 PM on Fridays. Line was out the door because the counter is right when you walk in. Honestly such an odd set up to me. So order a few beers for yourself and find a table asap otherwise you will find yourself waiting in the back of the long line to get another drink. Beers were really good and shots were eh but I also ordered the chai-quitita (?) and it was basically all ice! For $16, it was definitely a rip off. Customer service is great though and a bunch of pinball machines in the back for $1 a game.

Yelp
Great food. The Beachwood wood-fired house bread is a must buy menu item served with whipped ricotta, and a good dish for sharing too. Great drinks. I'm a sucker for stouts which they have. Their cocktail drinks are served nicely strong with liquor; I would recommend Tradewinds. Arcade games like pin-ball machines are available. The great thing about this place is it's indoor dog-friendly. Live music Fridays at 7PM is the best time to go if you want some free entertainment. For service, you just order your food and drinks at the cash register, then they'll give you a number and they'll bring the food and drinks to you! Love this place.

Yelp
Yummy drink. Good smells great. Had the strawberry buffalo wings. Also the wedge salad. Brought to your table after ordering at the bar.

Yelp
Food is good and the pinball is very fun! Bartenders are quick to help you and their sour beers are fantastic!!
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
Long Beach has a new distillery in Bixby Knolls called & you need to check it out if you're dating someone who loves tiki cocktails! They have fun tropical drinks, food, pinball machines and a HUGE lounging area the ambience is vibes, beachy and the service is good. I'd go back!
google avatar

Sav Q.

Yelp
Came to Beachwood with my sister for their holiday drinks and they were all so amazing! Jacob, the bartender, was very helpful and explained the cocktails to us so we knew exactly what we would like! We also ordered food and shared the wings and Parmesan fries, so delicious!! This spot is super chill + they have a mini arcade in the back! Definitely recommend!

J. F.

Yelp
Excellent, attentive service provided by hard-working employees! They helped me find a beer on tap that tasted good. Positive environment! I will return!

L K.

Yelp
Good lord. The wings were tender and not dry at all. They are smoked so if you like fried wings this is not the ring for you. The skin isn't crispy but has a notice smoky taste to it I also ordered the fried cod sandwich. Jesus it was the best fish sandwich I've had. The cod was so flaky and melted on my tounge. The the batter wasn't overpowering at all. I also ordered the salt and pepper fries however they were a bit too salty. The garlic fries had a better balanced. The beers are decently priced and they have a good selection. Ill be back

Yelp
My wife and I went there for a Bixby Knolls Business Association event, a Billy Joel listening party. They've been holding these once a month in 2024. The restaurant has craft beers they brew locally and also innovative craft cocktails. Prices are par for the area , about average . Aside from the event itself which was great,, we experienced their new menu. The food was fantastic and had great portions. I had a classic double burger with everything on it which was one of the best burgers I've had. Their craft beers are very tasty . The best thing was the service . The bartenders were very attentive and animated our needs and were good suggesting entrees. We'll be back often in the future! Ambiance in the restaurant is nice as well . Clean lines and beautiful bar and tables for patrons.

Yelp
We had been here before when it was Liberation Brewing and the vibe is the same, which is good. They have a small shuffleboard and pinball machines in the back. They have the same beers as the the original Beachwood BBQ, which are great.
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
Service was good, surprisingly the cocktails and the food were also good. Nice place to meet with friends of just go out and grab a drink and some food

Alfredo L.

Yelp
Overcrowded, no where to roam freely without having to squeeze through people. Ambiance is ok
google avatar

Kasey D.

Yelp
Beachwood officially took over the old Liberation Brewing location in Bixby. While it tugs on my heart strings to see one brewery close, it makes it happy that a local favorite stepped up to take over. The changes they made to the physical space make it feel lighter, more spacious, and welcoming. I'm a bid sad that the Dave Van Patten mural was painted over. However, I have heard that they are working with him to make a new mural for the space - so not all is lost with the local artist. Beachwood is an icon not only in the LBC, but also Seal Beach (original location which sadly closed), HB (brewery & soon to have a pizza joint), Garden Grove (SteelCraft), Blendery (sour program in DTLB), and also soon at 2nd/PCH. They're known for their award winning beer and friendly brewpubs. Everything they do is fantastic - IPAs, pales, sours (Blendery), to darker ales. Everything. This new spot will become a new passion project not just for the amazing craft beer we know and love from Beachwood. This will now be their chance to dive into the world of Distilling (clear spirits at first) as well as tonics and bitters. If they do to distilling what they've done for brewing, we are in for quite the treat! Give this family some love on the grand opening, 8/20/22, and well into the future! Cheers!

Jakey G.

Yelp
We love coming here for the live music on Friday nights. Dog friendly which is great, but it can be very loud inside. We are not the biggest fan of their beers, but the Japanese lager was decent.
google avatar

Geronimo T.

Yelp
Good place to chill. This brewery has a family atmosphere. Kids are welcomed with a few games. Old school pinball and games. I recommend this place because it is clean. Seating maybe limited, they could add a few more seats to accommodate. Good drinks and prices are fair.

Yelp
So this is a pretty short and easy review right now: Beachwood's been around for a while, their beer is great, and at least for right now, they're just taking some of that same beer they already made, and selling it in Bixby Knolls as well. It sounds like they're likely at least a few months away from being able to brew beer or distill anything in place here, but I do love that we're going to get another craft distillery, especially one that clearly already knows so much about brewing! Totally looking forward to seeing their take on spirits (once all the city licensing and bureaucracy is dealt with). So anyway, for right now, this is just Beachwood's beer you already presumably know and like, now also available at a second location. Same great super-sour sours if you like that sort of thing (a subset of the complete Blendery list of the day, much like the main Beachwood restaurant in DTLB), same great IPAs (though I prefer Trademark's IPAs personally, but if you live in Long Beach and like IPAs, you probably already have a side on that one, haha), same great pastry/sweet/imperial stouts, etc, but in a more laid-back tasting room instead of also being a restaurant with waitstaff (and not being almost *all* sours, like their equally laid-back Blendery tasting room.) Though this space is also a little bigger than Blendery's, with a free shuffleboard table, and a bunch of pinball machines. Sadly the pinball machines are *not* free, but they are still priced the same as when the machines were made, which thanks to a couple different rounds of inflation since then, is starting to feel fairly reasonable! I hear they're going to start running a pizza menu relatively soon, too! Looking forward to seeing how that works out! Love that Long Beach is slowly turning into a real craft beer city! (And even more slowly, a city with multiple craft distilleries!) p.s. They also have AC, I feel like that's useful information at the moment.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night with a group of friends! There was plenty of seating to fit my group of 10. The vibe here was great as it was filled with people but not too loud where I can't hear the people I am talking to. There was a wide variety of beers you can choose from. I tried a sour beer that I cannot remember the name of but it was red and I enjoyed it. The staff was very friendly and always came around to take our empty glasses. In addition, I loved how they had games like uno, bananagrams, and cards! I would come here again!

Denise M.

Yelp
So disappointed to see a place we saw evolve in HB back in 2013. We moved to Long Beach and we decided to see the Bixby Knolls location today. However we got there at 6:37pm and the none customer service guy with glasses informed us that they "close up and stop serving BEERS, 30 minutes before they close". No sense of trying to serve a customer and make it right (hence this bad review) Please change your hours to 6:30pm for people that travel to see this location and to avoid this disruption. You just lost two loyal day 1 customers and the friends and family we have near you guys.
google avatar

Megan K.

Yelp
Wish it had food options. At least there are restaurants nearby. Kid friendly, clean and a handful of games for the little and big kids.
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
Beachwood in Bixby is big & brewutiful. Lots of room for groups, the beer is obviously fantastic and although they do not serve food- there are rotating pop ups that feature a variety of eats. Definitely stop by for a beer, play a few games or just relax. Do recommend.
google avatar

Joshua F.

Yelp
I'd give a 2.5 stars if I could. First off, the good. The beer is great, although I wish they had more lagers and pilsners - a bit too IPA heavy for my liking (and do people really still drink hazies? what is wrong with you?). That said, everything Beachwood brews is on point, even if their styles aren't always my favorite. The service at the Bixby location is also very friendly. Kudos there. Now the not-so-good. Simply put, why is this place so BRIGHT?!?!? When you are enjoying a beer at 8 PM (ie WHEN IT IS DARK OUTSIDE), you don't want to feel like you are sitting inside the bedding section at Target with horribly brilliant lights shining down. It's a vibe killer. Nobody wants to play pinball inside a tanning bed, either (see every single good arcade ever). There is a reason bars turn on their lights when it's time to LEAVE. If the owners are curious about what a good nighttime beer-drinking esthetic is in the LBC zone, head over to Brouwerij West, Trademark, or Vine. What you have going on here just ain't it. And while I'm at it, why the hell did you destroy the rad murals that were on the walls?
google avatar

Toni S.

Yelp
Finally made our way over, short walk in the neighborhood. Beer is great, plenty of options and loved the smash burger pop up, delicious happy to see their is live music so hanging around to hear J and L Duo.

Justin S.

Yelp
Great beer and food. Very nice staff, huge selection of beer. Always good service. Good locations.
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
Went here for the grand opening on 8/20. Even though it was pretty busy, they had plenty of seating to offer since they took out the hot chicken spot that Liberation had in-house. They also redid the back and now offer pinball, skeeball as well as giant connect 4. Overall, a good time. Can't wait for the distilling to get up and running. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
New favorite brewery in the area. Excited to see what else they add. Beers are on point and I love what they did with the space. Added plus: they play Dodger games!

LL Z.

Yelp
Attended Plants and Pints tonight. What a super fun event. So many choices of beer. The hazy IPA was the bomb!! Highly recommend the place! And Plants and Pints!
